With built-in Wi-Fi, there are lots of possibilities for enjoying movies, TV shows, online videos, music, and photos in the setting that most brings them to life. In addition, this player offers Dropbox™ compatibility, so you can access your videos, music, and photos from the popular cloud-based storage system.

Wireless screen mirroring and network streaming

The cloud is not the only source of entertainment options with the 'S677. Miracast lets you send videos, music, and photos to the player from your compatible Android™ smartphone. Miracast makes it easy to show a photo or home movie on your HDTV instead of having people crowd around your smartphone. If you have a networked PC or NAS storage drive, you can wirelessly stream your digital movie and music collections over your network, making discs almost obsolete — but not quite. You'll never get better picture quality than you will with Blu-ray discs spinning in this player's optical drive.

High-res music from discs and downloads

Music lovers know Yamaha has always focused on creating products that sound great. The BD-S677 follows in this tradition, offering playback of high-resolution music with SACDs and downloadable FLAC and Apple Lossless files. What's the easiest way to enjoy your favorite high-res downloads? Load 'em up on a thumb drive, pop it in one of this player's two USB ports, and play 'em loud to enjoy their unrivaled depth and detail.

Easy control with the free Yamaha app

This player offers a couple of features that make it especially easy to use. There's a setup wizard to help you get up and running quickly — something we aren't accustomed to seeing in Blu-ray players. Yamaha also offers a free controller app for Apple® and Android™ tablets and smartphones. It's an easy way to operate the player over your wireless home network with a slick touchscreen interface. Pair this player with a network-connected Yamaha home theater receiver, and you'll enjoy even more control features with the app...not to mention thrilling surround sound.

  • 7.1ch Audio: Blu-ray disc provides as many as 7.1 channels of native, uncompressed surround sound for crystal-clear audio entertainment.
  • Enhanced Interactivity: Enjoy such capabilities as seamless menu navigation, bonus features, and network/internet connectivity.
  • DVD Compatible: Blu-ray disc players enable you to continue to view and enjoy your existing DVD library.

Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Blu-ray 3D: Blu-ray 3D is the Blu-ray disc video format for 3-dimensional (3D) video playback developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). Supporting Full HD (1080p), so you can enjoy high quality 3D video. TV and Blu-ray titles are also required to be 3D compatible to enjoy the 3D experience. Adding a 3D capable A/V Receiver will provide a more engaging audio and video consumer experience.

AVCHD: AVCHD (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) is a high definition digital video camera format used to record in high definition or standard definition on DVD, using an efficient data compression coding technology. The format is designed to compress video and audio (Dolby Digital or Linear PCM) data, enabling a high definition video signal shot on a digital video camera recorder to be recorded on DVD discs, in the same way as it would be for a standard definition signal.

SACD: Super Audio CD use a technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD) to convert music into a digital signal that can be stored on a disc. Compared to the traditional PCM method (the technology used for CD), DSD offers a much higher resolution by following more closely the original waveform of music. With a frequency response of over 100kHz and a dynamic range over 120dB across the audible frequency range - some 64 times higher resolution then CD - Super Audio CD offers music reproduction that reveals details you just cannot hear on a normal CD.

Firmware Updates: As Blu-ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet via the rear panel Ethernet terminal. Occasionally, Yamaha may release firmware for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website via the player's network connection. The tested Yamaha BD-S677 contained Firmware Version 1.117M0100 (as of 4/1/2014). Visit the BD-S677's Yamaha Support Page for the latest Firmware update information.

Dual USB Ports: The BD-S677 has front & rear-panel USB (type-A) ports. The rear port is used for the temporary storage needed for BD-Live features, and either can be used to play a variety of audio, video, or still image files saved on a USB msc (mass storage class) device. The USB memory device must be formatted with FAT 16/32. USB devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the Blu-ray player's USB port (5V/0.5A).

File Compatibility: The Yamaha BD-S677 Blu-ray disc player supports the following audio, video, and photo files recorded onto BD-R/RE, BD-R, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW discs; as well a USB mass storage class devices.

Audio MP3 (8-320kbps; 32-48kHz), WMA (32-192kbps; 32-48kHz), AAC, WAV (24-bit/192kHz), FLAC (24-bit/192kHz), ALAC (24-bit/192kHz)
Video AVCHD (DVD+R/RW only), DivX, MKV, MPEG, MPEG-4, H.264, AVI, ASF, WMV (1920 x 1080)
Photo JPEG, GIF, and PNG

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer (Kid Safe, G, PG, PG-13, PGR, R, NC-17, Adult, and Off), preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, and it will require your to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Sorry Michael, I have not tried that. If I recall, Netflix is not available on this machine. good luck.

In order to get Netflix working - I wound up returning Yamaha BD-S677 and purchasing a Yamaha BDA1020 which has the dedicated Netflix button. The 1020 had its own issues connecting with Netflix, that were resolved with a software fix - either from Yamaha or Netflix. Never figured out who came up with the solution. Just started working after several conversations with both vendors. It was an effort, but I am glad to have Netflix in the end.

Here are some options that I've tried: - Second blu-ray player - Kids' Wii - Connected laptop to receiver with an HDMI cable - Amazon Fire TV A working blu-ray player is the best option but not for $700+. The second best option was Amazon Fire TV but it doesn't support my Mac. I'm hoping the upcoming Apple TV will be the best answer. Through the Wii, the video quality is sub-VHS quality. You will need Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, or some other streaming device for Netflix - just be certain it supports hi-def and has all of the streaming options you want (WatchESPN is a must!). The lack of streaming is a serious shortcoming for this, the Denon and some of the other players in this range. I am currently using the kids' Wii for Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. On this player, Vudu is okay if you want to pay for everything. It does, however, maintain a stable feed. Youtube is pointless. Honestly, this player isn't all that impressive. The player has had some problems with a couple of my blu-rays that were fine on a Sony refurb player and I've read that others have had difficulties with this model supporting blu-rays. If it can't play blu-rays - what's the point? I'm waiting for the new Apple TV to come out to decide if that is better than the Amazon Fire TV because I really don't want another game system for the kids to want to buy games for.
