Our take on the Yamaha CD-S700

by Loren Barstow
Yamaha

Yamaha designed and built the CD-S700 CD player for exceptional music performance. And with more than a century's worth of experience making musical instruments, Yamaha knows high-quality sound.

Precision engineering for crystal-clear sound
The first thing you'll notice when you put a CD in the CD-S700 is the incredibly smooth and quiet disc tray. It features Yamaha's advanced Silent Loader mechanism for movement that's completely noise and rattle free. This player's beefy power supply has separate circuits for the analog, digital, and transport sections, each with a discrete ground. This arrangement minimizes crosstalk for incredibly accurate music reproduction. And separate digital-to-analog converters for both the left and right channels ensure superior stereo separation.

Pop an audio CD into the CD-S700 to enjoy densely layered sound with broad staging and pin-point imaging. Midrange and highs sound full and clean, coupled with excellent, well-defined bass. And with a push of a button on the remote or front panel, you can engage Pure Direct mode, which turns off the display and digital outputs. This eliminates two sources of potential noise for a new level of sonic purity.

A variety of playback options
The CD-S700 also plays your home-burned discs, plus those filled with MP3 and WMA files. And a front-panel USB input lets you listen to music stored on a thumb drive or external hard drive.

  • plays CDs, CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 & WMA CDs

excellent machine--but----

Written By Paul M, N. Chelmsford MA on Friday, April 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hate to undermine the previous reviewers, but I can't say I'm as impressed as they are. It works fine, but it is not three times better than $300 Marantz I was using, nor the Sony ES machine this replaces. The Sony had an "index" feature that I miss. I didn't have many discs that employed that device, but it was very helpful on theme & variation discs. It may not be an option anymore. I don't regret the purchase, but Im not convinced that it is significantly better than a $400 machine.
Pros:
Very quiet and uncluttered.
Cons:
Probably more expensivethan should be.

Yamaha CD-S700

Written By Gary D., Chillicothe, OH on Thursday, October 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha CD-700 has outstanding sound. The disk tray is quiet, no noise what so ever. The PURE DIRECT mode eliminates any internal interference and is a nice feature. I also like the USB port for connecting a memory stick to play my mp3 music. I purchased the CD-S700 to go with my Yamaha sound receiver RS-700. Outstanding system that I would recommend to anyone.
Pros:
Excellent sound and features. Quality constuction
Cons:
Expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Wow, What a Player!

Written By GlenT, Virginia on Thursday, March 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The title above says it all. I have been an audiophile for over 20 years, and this is the best player I have owned--and I have had many. The build quality is superb: a very quiet transport, no goofy "bells and whistles" (except for the USB connection I will never use), solid, well-spaced output connectors, good weight and feel, sturdy feet, and a nice textured finish. In terms of sonics, the CD-S700 delivers lucid, smooth, dynamic sound. I prefer this player to the similarly priced Onkyo C-7070, and to the more expensive Yamaha CD-S1000. I have had two CD-S1000s. The first I thought nice, but somewhat bland, and not an improvement over the CD-S700. I bought another CD-S1000 recently, and the transport made odd noises. I returned it, and went back to the 700--and I am glad I did. May the CD player live forever, and may Yamaha continue to make quality, no-frills two-channel audio equipment. I also note that I have the Yamaha A-S700 integrated amp, and it is superb, too. Do not waste your time with the competitors, as I have probably tried all of them. A CD-S700 and an A-S700 are all you need. Actually, good cables will help, too. I use Kimber Silver Streak and 8TC.
Pros:
reasonable price very solid build excellent sound quality detachable power cable display dimmer pure direct mode no headphone amp that I will never use not made in China
Cons:
none

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

Written By Prime_o_life, Lafayette, CA on Friday, March 09, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am stunned by the quality of the sound this unit produces when playing regular cds. I run this through an Anthem 225 amp attached to 2 MartinLogan Motion 12 speakers. This is my first high end cd player, and it's been a real eye-opening experience (maybe it's not even considered a high end player, but for me, it was a real step up).
Pros:
The separation of instruments and imaging is outstanding. It rivals the performance of my pro-ject turntable, and that's saying something.
Cons:
none whatsoever
