Listen to hours of uninterrupted tunes with the CDC-697 from Yamaha. Its multi-disc carousel design lets you load up five of your favorite CDs, including home-burned CD-R and CD-RW discs. This advanced player isolates the spinning disc from the tray and drawer, letting you change the other four discs without stopping your music. Other conveniences include random and repeat modes, intro scan, as well as a remote with volume control. And if you have CDs encoded with "CD Text" title and track information, this player can show this info right on its front-panel display.

The intelligent CDC-697 uses a microcomputer to monitor everything from the laser's tracking and focus to the disc motor speed, ensuring accurate and error-free playback. The laser is isolated on a floating mechanism, so its delicate operation is not affected by vibration. High-quality components are used throughout the player to maintain signal purity, allowing all of your CDs to sound their best. Ports for third party controllers and IR repeater systems make the '697 an especially great choice for anyone with a multi-room music system.

This is my second Yamaha 5 disc CD changer. No complaints so far. I've had it about 5 months. Its very user friendly. Love the features--play xchange, repeat track or repeat entire CD, random play.

Love it!

It arrived well packed and ready to put into action. It does all that I expceted and more. Replacing an old Pioneer CD player that worked very well for 16 years it has a lot to live up to. The best news is I was immediatley impressed by the improved sound quality it provided!

Pros: Easy to use, sounds great...hoep it last as long as my Pioneer!

Cons: None so far

Very happy so far

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great value. I still like to buy CD's and random play. I'm in the left out crowd of MP3's and IPods. I know that the future is in one song one price but I like to hear the selection of music in groupings with a finish time. We party a lot and when the music stops it gives me a sign to move people out and this cd player does just that. Five CD's the parties over. See YA

Pros: Great price and Good value

Cons: Takes a little to long to select next play with random play

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the Yamaha CDC-697 for a couple weeks and it works as advertised. It plays 5 CDs in a row. My biggest complaint about the unit would be the legibility of the display and button markings. This middle-aged rocker's eyes struggle a wee bit. Not a real big deal for me since I don't really need a whole lot of interaction with my CD changer. My modus operandi consists of loading discs and hitting the "play" button.

And speaking of loading, I'd read another reviewer carping about inserting discs into the back two trays. The typical person will do just fine with this task. Sure, in an ideal world the platter would rotate at your command and the remote would not be necessary for functions relegated there because of cost-saving measures from button- cutting bean counters. Perhaps the kindly folk at Yamaha will take note and improve on the next model. But, for now, I think the player will do its job for you.

great player, but poor, hard to read display

one major flaw

Written By stanm, Baton Rouge, La on Thursday, May 12, 2011

This player has many positives: quick disc change, tray shows all discs when open, digital volume control, quiet mechanism, versatile display, and great sound. Remote could be laid out a little better, but my main complaint is when spending this much I expect to be able to read the display without squinting. The music calendar is incredibly tiny and the entire amber colored display is on the dim side and difficult to see.For me this ruins what is nearly a perfect changer. I ended going with a Sony. Not as quick and a bit fewer features, but is half the price, also has great sound and has a display that is easily read.

Upgrade from a single disc player

Written By SteveK, Central, SC on Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been sold on Yamaha for at least 25 years. This is my 3rd Yamaha CD
player. I bought it simply because I grew tired of changing discs in my single
disc player, a 20-year-old Yamaha CDX-710U (it still works fine).

The sound quality is great... I expect nothing less from a Yamaha. It works well
so far (only a couple weeks since hooking everything up). If I remember
correctly, I paid $20 more for the single disc player 20 years ago, so you can't
beat the price.

I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I can tolerate mere excellence. Crutchfield's
way of doing business is as close to perfect as any company I have ever dealt
with, hands downs.

Yamaha CDC-697 5-CD Changer

Written By Marvelous, Lompoc, CA on Monday, March 14, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my fourth changer brand and third from Crutchfield. I would give it 5
stars at this point because of consistant smooth performance. My previous unit
was the Sony CDP-CE375 (still curent model) that was crude and noisy and
totally stopped reading discs after one year. When the laser fails, it's a $65
repair. The Yamaha CDC-697 costs twice the Sony price but performs many
times better, and I don't lie.

I find this CD Player much easier to use than my old Sony. You can view and reach all five

away with how quickly it shipped and arrived as well!

A good unit.

Written By Paul, Woodstock, VA on Wednesday, February 16, 2011

A good unit and plays well. I do not like the orange display lights, all my other 7 components are bright white and easy to read. Also its difficult to exchange discs in the back. The turn table does not advance so you can get the discs out. The good thing, Its quite fast when on random play, and solid when playing. I mean I have a lot of power and a big sub woofer. On my old player it would vibrate the lazer if I pushed it. This one has no skipping at all. I like it, and it sounds great. I would give it a 4.5

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a nice CD changer, the 'Random' function works well to shuffle between
discs and it works pretty fast. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is
because the platter is huge and it has cheap runners, and from the start it
wouldn't always close when you hit the button and I would have to give it a
little push. I put a teeny bit of light grease on the runners and they seems to
close all right now. Heavier sliders or rollers would be a good idea.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Being without music is a terrible thing for our household. When our Yamaha and Sony CD players both went out at the same time we were just sickened by the fact we had no music. My partner said lets run over to the local big box store. I politely refused saying I wanted to purchase from Crutchfield. He had never heard of Crutchfield before so I got online and showed him all the different CD players offered and what great prices they offered and he was all for ordering. It was just a couple of days we were without music as we finally received our new CD player a Higher End Yamaha and does it sound terrific. The quality is second to none. We love our new CD player and are always commenting that the sound is so much better than our previous Yamaha. In addition to getting the player I got a wonderful deal on the extended warranty, and free shipping. WE both are sold on crutchfield and cannot wait to order more. Possibly speakers will be next as thats what he has been talking about since we got our catalog.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a 10-15 year old Yamaha (still running but no remote control shutoff). Tried using Blu-Ray player for CDs with subpar results. Sound quality on other than Blu-ray/DVD is poor. The 697 has remote shutoff(standby) but no earphone jack. Sound is superb. Tried a number of higher-end players with my system. No better sound than with the 697.

As for loading access to the 4th and 5th positions:

1. Load discs 1,2 and 3.
2. Close the drawer and start playing disc 1.
3. Hit play xchange. Drawer will open to allow loading the 2 remaining positions. DO NOT LOAD IN #1 which is now playing.
4. Hit play Xchange button to close the drawer and go about your listening business for five discs!!

Hope this helps.

Bought as replacement for my Yamaha CDC-635 which was 18 years (yes, 18!) old.

Good sound, good value, just not quite as flexible as the old unit for which, apparently, Yamaha no longer has an equivalent.

But Yamaha, when are you going to "lose" those yellow displays? Most of the world (including much of your own equipment) has already gone to white. Hard to read from across the room, compared to white.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the Yamaha CDC-697 to replace an old Sony 5 disc player that quit working after about 10 years. This unit sounds good, but is harder to operatel, most everything has to be done through the remote, my greataest beef is getting the carousel to move forward in order to load the 5th CD it's a real pain, I did it once - my wife gets ticked off about it on the old unit all you had to do was hit Disk Skip on the front panel. The buttons on the front panel are under the drawer rather than above it, so you cannot see them.

Written By Tim, Winterport, ME on Saturday, February 27, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For those who find that simple 5-disc carousel changers are nearly non-existent, you're
correct - but the CDC-697 is a worthy contender. I recently purchased this unit that
replaced a much-loved 12-year old Kenwood, and it was certainly a close match for the
price. Based on subjective first audio impressions the Yamaha seems far more refined
than the Kenwood. Equally impressive is the mechanical performance - smooth, quiet
and quickly responsive to disc changes and remote commands. To play/exchange the
Yamaha extends the entire drawer for total access (rather than disc-skip rotation), yet it
has posed no loading issues. However, the remote is clearly the weak link as indicated
in many reviews - and rightly so, as it adds many features that detract from the simple
operation I prefer (the Kenwood was far superior in this regard) while leaving direct disc
selection buttons to the front panel. Once again, a trade-off to accommodate a range of
users. Installation was a breeze, and I can see (and hear) why this earns the "customer
favorite" designation at Crutchfield. Higher quality design almost drove me to the pricier
Marantz (a fine product). However, for my basic requirements the Yamaha is an
excellent alternative, and the CDC-679 would find a good home in any home audio set-

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am pleased with the Yamaha CDC-697's audio performance but echo other reviewer's sentiments:1.) loading the 5th CD is extremely awkward 2.) the the front panel controls are obscured when the carousel is in the open position 3.) the front panel controls are quite tiny, are very difficult to read and are not illuminated as are other CD players.

Good sound, but

Written By Dore, Austin, TX on Monday, November 30, 2009

I recently purchased the Yamaha CDC-697 to replace what I thought was the comparable unit - Yamaha CDC-635 - which was about 12 years old and was skipping during play. The new unit sounds fine, but has far less features on the front panel, most everything has to be done through the remote, like random play, and getting the carousel to move forward in order to load the 5th CD is a huge pain, about 5 steps whereas on the old unit all you had to do was hit Disk Skip on the front panel. This apparently can no longer be done with the drawer open, and what few buttons the front panel does have are under the drawer rather than above it, so you cannot see them.

I wish I had done more research before purchasing this unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm impressed by the sound quality. Was my old CD player that bad or does the optical cable make that much difference? My only gripe is that it's difficult to read the controls when standing just above the player. Can't they make the buttons more legible? It almost requires using the remote. I'm very happy with the sound of my mostly classical library.

a little touchy, broke easily

Written By Andrea, the Mother Lode, California on Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Initially, I loved this unit. The sound quality is impressive, the disc change quick and quiet. But discs which had barely visible scratches or marks, and which played fine on other equipment, would skip or get stuck with a "shuddering" sound. If you borrow CDs from your public library, this is NOT the equipment for you!

I had the unit open to replace the CDs in it, when a stack of 20 CDs in their jewel cases toppled onto the open tray, which is now broken, stuck in the "out" position. I am disabled, and the nearest authorized repair place is too far away for me to drive to. To package this to ship to a repair center will take an extra-large box and special packing to make sure the extended tray doesn't break off altogether. Roundtrip shipping plus the repair makes it cheaper to buy another unit. Such a waste! I think the design of this changer lends itself to this kind of breakage - it's the only changer (out of the four I've had) which totally extends the tray to provide access to all CDs at once.

Excellent sounds quality and fast disk changing between disks. I owned a prior model by Yamaha for 16 years before buying this one. The build quality doesn't seem to be any less than our old model.
A minor issue I have is that Yamaha took many of the disk control buttons off the front panel...but are still on the remote. I find this annoying, but it seems to be a trend of the times across all brands.

The unit was purchased to replace an old Sony 5 disc player. I love the clean lines and the size. As others have stated, the remote is small and a little confusing. The unit was purchased to provide background music while we entertain, yet the clarity of the music and the sound is superior even through ceiling speakers. We can just load it, start it and forget it for the evening. I have it hooked up through a Denon AVR 788 reciever for surround sound and also an older Sony reciever with RCA plugs which plays throughout the house and patio. Sounds terrific through either system. Crutchfield is terrific in both support and sales.

Yamaha CDC-697 Solid Performer

Written By Steven, Arkansas on Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the CDC-697 from Crutchfield this past month. It was securely packed by double-boxing and arrived within a few days. It replaces a Denon multi-disc player and an alternate Tivoli player. The Denon was unreliable and the Tivoli, although cute, is a bit grainy on the top end. Anyway, one of the things I was looking for (an why I used the Denon and Tivoli) was remote controlled volume level. The Yamaha has this and unlike the Tivoli, the volume increments are in small dB steps giving you more control over the level. (The two amps I own don't have remote controls.) I've been putting the Yamaha through its paces by loading it up and letting it play tracks randomly and discs in sequence. It played all discs without missing a beat, including one CD-R that trips up most players. That was an important test for me, because many commercially pressed CD's contain errors and how well a player handles them means the difference between hearing pops and clicks or possible silence. The Yamaha limits its playback to Redbook only (no mp3, HDCD, SACD, etc.) but its performance is quite excellent with a lot of detail. IMHO, a dedicated Redbook player will always outperform a multi-format player when it comes to Redbook playback. In my experience that's held true whether using a top-end Pioneer DVD player, a borrowed Sony ES SACD player, or my old Denon HDCD/CD player. If having a multi-disc player is important to you (it was me, simply for convenince's sake), I don't think you'll find a better player for the money. (I've looked!) It's built solidly and the remote's layout is well thought out. Also, a nice touch is the aluminum front panel and IEC AC inlet, which gives you an upgrade path (if you're into that sort of thing).

Excellent Product!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this from Crutchfield on November 27, and it arrived at my home in CA on the 30th. Thanks to Crutchfield for the fast service!

I immediately hooked it up to my Yamaha 5940 receiver using an optical cable. For speakers, I'm using a pair of B-3 speakers, and a subwoofer. I use the CD player to play a mixture of store purchased CD's and Audio CD's (not MP3/WMA) I burned myself. I listen to all kinds of music, excluding rap.

Easy to use/setup; ability to randomly play tracks from a single disc or all five discs; ability to repeatedly play just a single disc or all five discs; programmable track play; can replace the other four discs while a fifth is still playing; quality of sound is clear, crisp and warm; quick transition between songs, even during random play; quiet operation; handsome design; ability to use all functions from the remote, especially turning it on/off (I had the Denon 290, but it cannot be turned on/off using the remote); two-year manufacturer's warranty.

It doesn't play MP3/WMA CD's. Which is not an issue for me because I don't like the quality of compressed digital music, not when listening at home at least.

I'm very happy with my purchase so far. And with Yamaha's two-year warranty, I'm not too worried about reliability for now.

Input and Output Notes

CD Compatibility: The Yamaha CDC-697 5-disc CD changer will play prerecorded CDs, finalized CD-R discs and finalized CD-RW discs.

Super-Silent Mechanism and Disc Stabilizer: This design uses a belt and gear drive to ensure smooth disc rotation and plastic rollers under the tray to allow it move more smoothly. The disc being played is isolated from vibration on a separate tray and held in place by a disc stabilizer. The quieter and smoother disc changing system helps maximize the units sound quality.

Laser Pickup Floating Mechanism: The laser pickup is isolated on a floating mechanism so its delicate operation cannot be affected by vibration.

Intelligent Digital Servo System: This type of system uses a microcomputer to monitor the signal, adjusting pickup tracking and focus, as well as spindle motor speed, to compensate for any problems.

Power Supply: The special low-impedance power supply uses extra thick wires to ensure that power is absolutely stable even under low-impedance conditions.

PlayXchange: PlayXchange allows you to change up to 4 discs without interrupting playback. Most of the tray extends from the unit when opened, which allows you to insert all four CDs without rotating the tray.

CD Text: When a CD Text encoded CD is played, this unit will display the CD Text information.

Disc Scan: This feature plays 8 seconds of each disc in the changer.

Program Play: Up to 40 tracks from any combination of the 5 discs can be programmed and played in any order.

Random Play: This unit allows you to choose single disc random or all disc random play. Note: Random play is only accessible with the remote control.

Repeat Play: The CDC-697 allows you to repeat the current track, current disc, or all discs. In addition, you can repeat Program Play and Random Play.

Index Search: If the disc includes index numbers, play can be started from any desired index number.

Variable Output Level: The output level of the line output is variable and can be adjusted by remote.

Music Calendar: The player has a 20-track music calendar, the numbers corresponding to the tracks on the disc are lit until the track has played.

Disc Selection: Using the buttons on the front panel you can directly access the 5 discs. On the supplied remote there are buttons to skip disc in either direction. Direct track selection is available on the remote.

Dimmer: Using the remote control, the display brightness can be set to one of three levels.

Automatic Peak Level Search: This feature automatically searches a disc for a part where the source level peaks and then plays the part repeatedly. For recording to tape, this feature is very helpful in adjusting the recording level of the tape deck.

CD Synchronized Recording: Using a compatible Yamaha tape deck, you can synchronize the tape deck to start recording automatically when the CD starts playing.

Automatic Tape Programming: By memorizing the tape's total possible recording time, the unit will automatically program tracks, or help you to program tracks, so they will fit onto the tape with the least amount of unrecorded space remaining at the end of the tape. You can select any of four preset tape lengths by pressing the Tape button. You can choose from Off, 46, 54, 60, or 90. You can also choose to manual enter in the total possible recording time of the tape.

Random Tape Programming: This unit will automatically program tracks on a disc in random sequential order for recording to tape.

Timer Playback: You can start playback at any specified time by connecting a timer (sold separately).

Remote Control: The 022CDC697 comes supplied with an IR full-featured wireless remote control.
