Want handy operation from your smartphone or tablet?

There's an app for that. Using your Wi-Fi® network and your smartphone or tablet, you can browse your music libraries, view album artwork, and control the CD-N500 with wireless convenience thanks to Yamaha's downloadable Network Player Controller app. This free app even includes a Music Play function that lets you stream music from your portable device wirelessly.

Top-notch Yamaha build and sound quality

All of the CD-N500's features and versatility wouldn't mean a thing if it didn't sound fantastic, too. And this Yamaha doesn't dissapoint. Its aluminum front panel and rotary encoder knob provide a solid feel and refined looks. A double top and bottom structure with steel vibration dampers on both the top cover and the bottom of the chassis squelches vibrations that hinder sound quality. The transport's optical pickup and servo control are optimized specifically for CD use with the priority focused squarely on stable disc tracking and precise playback. Interior layout was also carefully considered for sound quality, and includes left-right symmetrical audio circuitry with the shortest possible signal paths. Finally, all of the player's parts, including the high-precision 192KHz/32-bit Burr-Brown DAC, were carefully selected to deliver top-quality sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is the best CD player I have ever owned - sound noticeably better than my old Onkyo player - Network capabilities are nice, but the navigation to the songs on the hard drive can be a bit confusing via the remote - all in all satisfied with this unit - Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Good DAC for good analog sound (next to vinyl of course!) Great sound from my music files on my hard drive Yamaha quality and build is great

Cons: Network player somewhat difficult to navigate via remote

Very Good Player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted an upgrade for an older Pioneer multi-disc player. I have Bose 301 speakers supplemented with two Yamaha YST-SW216 Subwoofers connected on speaker A and B outputs from a Yamaha Receiver R-S700. I researched the Yamaha CD-S700, concluded that it was more solid and "accurate' but lacked a certain vitality to its output. The S700 has dual DACs but the N500 has a newer upgraded DAC and assuming more current technology. Although my primary desire was CD music improvement I was also sold on the networking ability, and direct iPad connectivity for additional versatility. The sound output via CDs is outstanding. Detail I never knew existed emerges from the CDs and my entire system is much more melodic. Yamaha uses the NetRadio platform that accesses several thousand stations. The playback on this and downloaded formats is satisfactory to great. Added Yamaha YWA-10 wireless adapter. Overall I'm pleased with my decision.

Pros: Foremost the quality of played CDs is outstanding. Networking capabilities. iPad direct connectivity. NetRadio

Cons: Could use built in wireless but not sure if this would complicate the cleanness of circuitry.

Great standalone music source

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wasn't positive that this player would be exactly what I wanted, but it came pretty close. I was mainly looking for a USB and network FLAC & 24bit HD audio player with high quality sound and analog outputs. I didn't need Wi-Fi and didn't want it connected to a TV. It doesn't connect with a file server, only DLNA servers. I don't believe that it has Pandora. The Wi-Fi for the iPod/Android app needs to be on the same subnet as the wired connection to the player. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but what it does do, it does very well. I really enjoying listening to it and can easily listen to more of my music collection now.

Pros: CD's sound great and HD audio sounds even better. Even MP3's sound good. Turns on instantly and all controls are fast.

Cons: Doesn't have ffwd/rew in FLAC files, only track skip. No rear USB, only a front USB port.

Great CD/Network Player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this to match my Yamaha R-S700 receiver. Plus I wanted the vtuner function. I live in the hills and can not get FM. Everything works great plus the sound is amazing. Very clean and detailed. This thing is built like a tank-very solid. Once again Yamaha has a hit.

Pros: Great sound. Easy network setup.

Cons: None

CD Playback

High Quality Construction: This unit has a double top and bottom structure with steel vibration dampers on both the top cover and the bottom of the chassis. Various vibrations that lower sound quality are prevented by joining the CD mechanism and chassis using Yamaha's proprietary loader support, and by increasing the stiffness of the mechanism itself by anchoring it to the surface. The optical pickup is specialized for CD use with priority on sound quality, and an intelligent digital servo that performs servo control optimized for the disc being played achieves stable disc tracking and improves reading precision. The result is natural and high purity sound playback.

Aluminum Front-Panel: The aluminum front panel, with its simple yet high-quality hairline finish, features a top-grade design with a rotary encoder that's convenient for music navigation.

Audiophile Sound: The carefully considered interior layout includes left-right symmetrical audio circuitry and provides the shortest circuit path for audio signal travel, allowing sound to be faithfully reproduced without loss of audio signal purity. Furthermore, all parts were rigorously selected, including the 192KHz/32-bit Burr-Brown high precision DAC, highly regarded for audio use.

Disc Compatibility: The Yamaha CD-N500 CD/Network player will play CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (12cm or 8cm).

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD-N500 supports playback of compressed MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. The CD player can recognize up to 256 folders, 512 filers per folder, and a maximum of 999 total files.

USB/iPod Integration

The unit will recognize up to 256 folders, 512 files per folder, and a maximum of 32,767 total files. The unit's USB port supports basic playback controls, such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Skip (Next/Previous); as well as folder and track select.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The Yamaha CD/Network player's USB port also supports playback of your iPod/iPhone's music files (via the USB cable supplied with  your iPod/iPhone). The CD-N500 offers audio playback, basic control (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Previous/Next), information display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone.
