Many features, one mission

One look at the back of the Yamaha CX-A5000 preamp/processor, and you'll know you're dealing with a pretty serious home theater component. But the large and varied collection of audio and video inputs and outputs is just the tip of the iceberg. Every facet of the CX-A5000 is meant to take your music and movie sources to new heights. It's loaded with features like network capability, Apple AirPlay, multi-zone flexibility, 11.2-channel outputs, and inputs for almost any kind of source you can think of. But most of all, this is a well-built preamp designed to make all your entertainment choices look and sound as good as they did in the mastering studio.

Making the most of analog and digital sources

When you see those 3-pin balanced XLR connectors lined up across the CX-A5000's back panel, you know you're getting a preamp designed for top audio performance. With XLR inputs and outputs, this preamp can maintain a balanced signal path from your high-end stereo source component all the way through to your power amp. This reduces the noise in the transmission, letting your music's detail and dynamics shine through. Digital audio signals from Blu-ray and CD players are handled by dual ESS SABRE32 Ultra digital-to-analog converters, for audiophile-grade performance in stereo or surround sound.

Great sound is in the details

It's not just the back panel that can tell you a lot about the CX-A5000. Take a look at the clean black aluminum front panel. It mirrors the clean power and pure signals this powerful component delivers. That's the benefit of Yamaha's dedication to quality sound and solid construction. It starts on the outside, with aluminum front and side panels, a thick-bottomed chassis, and five sturdy feet to minimize sound-degrading vibrations. On the inside, the three-layer circuit board isolates digital, analog audio, and analog video circuitry to reduce interference. The copper-shielded power transformer and separate supplies for analog and digital stages are further enhancements that go the extra mile to make sure the audio and video signals exiting this preamp are kept as pure as possible.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My home theater room is approximately 2400 cubic feet with a combination of 9 status acoustic & Rbh speakers with svs subs. I've been using a Yamaha rx z9 for years and I decided I wanted to get into something that would reproduce movies with improved detail. The Yamaha amp is clean and strong so I wasn't about to discard the very nice amp section on the RX Z9. I added a denon avr with 1.3 hdmi to the system and used it as a processor and to power the surrounds. The processing result of 4808 denon was in my opinion mediocre. After 6 months of watching movies with superb sound tracks and getting merely adequate results I decided to upgrade to a dedicated processor. I was going to get a Marantz processor or the Oppo 105 (which will function like an processor) but when the Yamaha went on sale for $1250 that sealed the deal. I have the Yamaha CX A5000 set to 9.1 and using analog pre outs to the RX Z9 and the Denon. I am absolutely stunned at the resulting audio quality. The audio is precisely located, with stunning and rich detail that seemed to be reserved for only the best movie theaters. I think with time and interest most people can set this device up to a pretty good result. A word of caution, if your system is weak don't expect a fine result. But if you're building as I did, then get this processor. I wouldn't be concerned about absence of Atmos. This processor is clean, accurate and precise. I think you'll like it.

Pros: Precise detail and imaging that you have to hear in your home to believe.

Cons: Works best if you get a Blu Ray player with V 1.4 hdmi. I would not buy this item to listen to pcm internet streams for music or movies.

Product is built great and sounds amazing. I really like how easy it was to set up and use. I had no use for atmos or dts-x so this model was a no-brainer for the price.

Pros: Great sound, very easy to setup and use. Great remote.

Cons: No atmos/dtsx upgrade ability. No 4k copyright pass through.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was surprised at how much better this made my system sound. I'm pretty sure it was mostly due to the YPAO speaker set up, but I'm quite pleased. I also went from a 5.1 to a 7.1 speaker arrangement. The set up was absolutely evil though, mostly due to poor documentation. I printed out the 200+ page manual and it was pretty dog eared by the time I was done. I'd give the unit a 5 and the manual a 2. The information's all there, it just that you find out pages later why what you just did isn't working right. Very frustrating.

Pros: YPAO makes speaker set up a breeze and sounds great. Nice remote and solid features. A lot of connection options.

Cons: Poor instruction manual. Connection options vague. Had to buy an outboard DC trigger due to lack of switched outlet (pretty common on all brands now) for my older amp.

This unit provides excellent performance, even beyond its specifications. A suggestion is to search online for as much info as you can find, for the owners manual, like many others, is inadequate for a unit of this complexity,.Then investigate the features, experiment with the settings, especially, the DSP sound fields, use them with the Virtual Cinema mode, and the Silent Cinema for headphone listening. WOW!

Pros: Clean output, despite the tremendous amount of processing when using the YPAO and YPAO R.S.C. filters, along with the DSP Sound Fields and Virtual Cinema.

Cons: Must find in-depth background info in sources other than this manual (i.e. feature sheets for this unit, as well as features sheets and manuals for the RX-Z11, DSP 3000, DSP-1, etc.).

    Great preamp!

I bought this preamp to replace a B&K reference 50 that finally gave up the ghost. I was surprised how flat the frequency response can be. I am used to studio monitors and as such I prefer flat uncolored music. The pure direct sound is quite good. Although I purchased this for a surround preamp, I have been pleasantly surprised by the audio quality for CD's as well. I love the internet radio function. I purchased the wireless adaptor as well and it hooked up easily to my home system. I am still playing with the deep programming as far as parametric EQ and such, but so far I am very pleased with this preamp. A tip, the next model does away with all super VHS inputs so if you are like me and still have some VHS recordings, jump on this year's model before those inputs disappear with next year's model.

Pros: Ease of setup, ability to custom tailor the sound

Cons: no balanced output for subwoofer, however that will be corrected with next model, however super VHS input disappears

    Great Sounding Pre-Amp

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried the Yamaha CX-A5000 ($2500) and another pre-amp ($3500), and have chosen the CX-A5000 to run my dedicated home theater. The Yamaha CX-A5000 is extremely well can tell by the look and feel of it, the high quality connectors on the back, and the remote control. Set-up is easy, and the YPAO automatic room correction works extremely well...I'm amazed at how much different and better it sounds with YPAO working vs. without it (you can toggle back and forth to hear the difference) It gets the distances reasonably close, and it does a respectable job on the volume levels, but you should check these with an audio/video disc to make my case, I had to make a few adjustments. It told me to set all my speakers to large (they are capable of running full-range), however being a "movie-guy", I always run my speakers small with an 80hz crossover. Whenever I re-run YPAO, the results are quite consistent. The sound is terrific...strong, natural and detailed without being in any way forward, bright or fatiguing. Imaging is right-on with a good holistic sound-field. It's perfect for movies, but also respectable for music (much more expensive, audiophile grade pre-amps can do better on music, but I don't think much if any better for movies). I highly recommend the CX-A5000. I've been through a lot of pre-amps over the years, this is by far the least expensive one I've ever tried, and I'm very satisfied...I'm keeping it.

Pros: * Great value for the money * Great sound * Great automatic room correction * Easy to use * Well built

    WOW what a preamp

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This preamp is unbelievable and every time I use it I learn something new. The user guide is almost 200 pages, so I have only read some of it. I have it on my computer and refer to it often. This preamp has all the bells & whistles you could think of. I keep learning something new every time I use it. I just wish there was a way to adjust the volume of the surround & rear surround speakers. My old DSP-1 was able to do that and I haven't found a way to do that on this preamp. I am not saying this preamp can't do that, I just haven,t found out how. All and all this is one of the best things I have bought. I hope to keep learning more about this preamp.

Pros: The sound and picture is the best I have heard and seen. Don't tell YAMAHA but this CX-A5000 is worth twice the price. YAMAHA keep up the good work.

Cons: Make it more adjustable like my old DSP-1.

Yamaha Flagship Does it AGAIN!!! BRAVO!!!!

BillP from Vernon Hills, IL on 1/27/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an Audio-Holics MUST-HAVE Flagship PreAmp!!! Incredible high end build, easy to read displays, GUI interface is the best, and remote is clean and simple to use. I previously had the Yamaha RX Z-1 flagship receiver released in 2007 and loved every bit of its features. This new CX-A5000 Flagship takes surround to the next level and beyond!! The soundfields are still the best in the field and totally immersive - and I've been to many of these concert halls that Yamaha has measured - the reflections are spot on!! I'm at the Chicago Symphony twice a month and can discriminate musical details that only this pre-amp can bring forward from the discs and high res audio files. Also, this model has Balanced outputs for each channel!! Awesome!! I hooked up my Oppo 105 and was instantly impressed at the exact reproduction of the orchestral sounds from my BluRay and SACD classical music discs!! I currently have the 11.2 set up and can tell you that the CA-A5000 exceeds the RX Z-1 in many ways. BRAVO YAMAHA!!! Your new flagship pre-amp has done it again!!!! TOTAL MUSICAL ELATION!!! Plus, the advanced video circuitry will scale up to 4K!!

Pros: Superb Sound Field Control, Perfect Concert Hall Reproduction, Immersive Movie Surround settings, iPAD controllable, network compatible, balanced outputs, one balanced stereo input

Cons: Absolutely None!! This is a Yamaha's Flagship PreAmp built with the highest degree of quality and craftsmanship.

11.2ch AV Preamplifier: Combined with the Yamaha Aventage MX-A5000 11.2 channel power amplifier (020MXA5000, sold separately), the Yamaha Aventage CX-A5000 11.2ch AV preamplifier achieves superb sound quality and ensures an unequalled listening experience. The AV preamplifier also offers advanced video processing technology, versatile network capability with a wide range of content access and app control, along with flexible system configuration that benefits from advanced HDMI zone switching. In addition, the CX-A5000 features a high rigidity chassis, ESS Technology ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs, and reliable balanced connection.

ESS Technology ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs: In the CX-A5000, all channels use ultra high performance ESS Technology ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs, which provide 192kHz/32-bit compatibility, high SN ratio, and 124dB dynamic range, ensuring that it can faithfully reproduce audio signals from Blu-ray Disc and other players and high quality signals from high resolution sound sources input through networks. Matched to the design of the DAC circuit, which achieves stable ground potential (DAC on Pure Ground), they ensure high precision D/A conversion. The OP amp is a high grade type adopted only by flagship models for maximum signal purity. It produces even more detailed sound by adopting a three-layer circuit board design that completely separates the digital, analog video and analog audio circuit boards, which have different noise levels and frequency bands, and by a design that provides the shortest possible circuit route. Further, by separating the power supplies to the analog circuit boards, it eliminates high frequency noise interference from the digital circuits. The shielded power supply restricts noise radiation and the large power transformer minimizes vibration.

Rigid Chassis: The CX-A5000 features an advanced chassis design with strong rigidity. Chassis stiffness is enhanced by an H-shaped cross frame that boosts mechanical strength by adopting aluminum side panels that increase the stiffness of the housing and by a three-ply structure with independent top cover and side panels. Any external vibration from the rack or other sources is damped by heavy insulators. The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge in the center of the bottom cover acts as an additional vibration countermeasure and firmly supports the internal circuits and delicate parts. In addition, this model has a double bottom chassis and rigid bottom frame to further enhance chassis rigidity and reduce the transmission of vibration produced by the large power supply and other internal components.

Balanced Connections: Electrical noise may be generated due to connection with other AV components and even from the connection between the preamplifier and power amplifier, as well as from other sources of external noise. To ensure that the CX-A5000 and MX-A5000 are not affected by this distortion, they use balanced connections that are highly noise resistant; the same type generally used in pro audio equipment. Even the RCA unbalanced connection uses a ground sensing transmission method that achieves simple balanced transmission. And in cases such as that where each channel with the XLR is used selectively, the impact of noise flowing between the preamp and the chassis of the power amp is removed, minimizing sound quality deterioration due to the connection. The CX-A5000 also allows balanced audio input connection to high grade source components, such as SACD players.

YPAO R.S.C. (Reflect Sound Control) w/ Angle Measurment: YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds. Yamaha's YPAO-R.S.C. system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, angle of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each.
    • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel.
    • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel.
    • EQ: Each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of three target settings before running the setup.
      • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
      • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
      • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
    • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.
    • Angle Measurement: The direction (angle) of the front speakers, surround speakers, and presence speakers as seen from the listening position is measured, and compensation is applied to the soundfield in order to maximize the effectiveness of the CINEMA DSP soundfield.

Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV preamplifier's speaker settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha CX-A5000 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the preamplifier must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV preamplifier offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes:
      • Panorama: sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect
      • Dimension: adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room
      • Center Width: moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV preamplifier offers 33 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie
    • Entertainment Soundfields: Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Music Video, Pavilion, Disco
    • Classical: Hall in Munich A, Hall in Munich B, Hall in Frankfurt, Hall in Stuttgart, Hall in Vienna, Hall in Amsterdam, Hall in USA A, Hall in USA B, Church in Tokyo, Church in Freiburg, Church in Royaumont, Chamber
    • Live/Club: Village Gate, Village Vanguard, Warehouse Loft, Cellar Club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, Arena
    • Stereo: 2ch Stereo, 11ch Stereo
Note: You can change the preamplifier's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha CX-A5000 AV preamplifier offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using Presence Speakers, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Cinema DSP HD3: Cinema DSP HD3 is Yamaha's flagship 3D soundfield playback technology that takes full advantage of the massive amount of acoustic reflection data included in the soundfield data. By using four Cinema DSP engines with advanced 3D processing and four presence channels in an 11 channel configuration, it gives the sound an enhanced vertical dimension. You are enveloped in wide, high and dense sound fields that deliver excitingly realistic surround sound. In addition, a rear Virtual Presence Speaker has been added to the usual front Virtual Presence Speaker, so you can enjoy Cinema DSP HD3 programs using a 9 channel system (without rear presence speakers) with almost the same sensational sound as an 11 channel system
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center/presence speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • Adaptive DSP Level: You can change the preamplifier's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can manually adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB. Or, with Adaptive DSP Level, the preamplifier automatically adjust the Cinema DSP effect level in conjunction with volume adjustments.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha CX-A5000 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the preamplifier's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the preamplifier produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Pure Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, dims the front-panel display, and cancels AV output to allow sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha CX-A5000 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha CX-A5000 AV preamplifier provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the preamplifier' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha CX-A5000 allows you to customize the preamplifier's volume levels.

    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the preamplifier's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Yamaha's latest graphical user interface (GUI) has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable status bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures. You can set the preamplifier's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, Japanese, German, Russian, or Chinese. If your TV is connected to the composite video, component video, or S-video monitor output, you will need to use the AV preamplifier's front-panel display when changing settings.

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the preamplifier's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Yamaha CX-A5000 AV preamplifier allows you to configure a multi-zone audio/video system for your home. The multi-zone configuration feature enables you to set this unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone, second zone (Zone 2), third zone (Zone 3) and fourth zone (Zone 4).

    • Zone 2/Zone 3: The AV preamplifier's Zone 2/Zone 3 outputs allow you to play the same or different audio/video sources in other rooms of your home. The preamplifier has dedicated stereo preamp outputs for both Zone 2 & 3 (requires separate amps). The analog video monitor outputs (component video, S-video, and composite video) can also be assigned to Zone 2 or Zone 3 (but not both). The volume of Zone 2 or Zone 3 can be controlled by the Yamaha preamplifier or from your add-on integrated amplifier. You can select the following input sources for Zone 2 or 3.
      • Analog Audio/Video Inputs (the video conversion between analog video jacks does not work for the multi-zone output; to watch video in another zone, you need to connect the Zone 2/3 video monitor out in the same way as the video input device)
      • Digital Audio Inputs (Optical/Coaxial; 2ch PCM only to Zone 2 only)
      • AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone)
      • USB (including iPod/iPhone)

    Why did you buy this?

Outstanding unit, build quality second to none, features everything you would need to build a hifi sound system as well as a great HT system. [ Kyle  Sep 26, 2016 ]
This pre/pro while a couple years old is a high quality product and right now is a good value. It gets great reviews and will be a step up from my previous receiver. It does not have Atmos support but this is not a concern to me as I do not have the ability to add atmos ceiling speakers. I am more interested in the sound quality of the ESS DACs and the fact that it is my first launch in to the world of separates. [ Ryan  Sep 19, 2016 ]
Excellent price for such a high reviewed item. Been want a new pre pro. [ Todd  Sep 05, 2016 ]
Excellent reviews in Sound and Vision magazine. My current prepro lacks HDMI inputs, which my roku, blu ray, and TWC box all have. Price at Crutchfield is quite reasonable compared to the original MSRP or the most current model (CX-A5100) Crutchfield has a great selection, good online info, good prices, and a good reputation for customer satisfaction. [ Terence  May 14, 2016 ]
Based on brand name, the review and price. [ Nghia  Apr 14, 2016 ]
    Good value for a quality piece. [ Joseph  Feb 28, 2016 ]
Yamaha never makes anything that is not the top of the line from stereo equipment, dirt bikes, snowmobile and so on. Can you spend more money, sure, but I am sure you would have to spend twice the amount to make a difference. Yamaha products seem to work for ever. [ William C.  Feb 02, 2016 ]

OOPS, a 7.2 RF-7 II tower system. These too all sound great with the CX-A5000. The set up and scenes adjustments are easy to do the option button is used for each input seperately to fine toon these scenes then you can save each scene's settings. This alone makes setting up a universal remote easy. [ Ronald  Aug 22, 2016 ]
I would think any amp would do fine. B&K was supposde to be great stuff. This is about the only pre-amp or reciever that has the 7.1 inputs for an older sacd player. Some sacd players do this with software and is sent via. HDMI. I really like this pre-amp. Good luck. [ Ronald  Aug 22, 2016 ]
YEs,I have had full B&K systems, this will drive your amp with ease . and yes, it can support SACD by analog input, HDMI input. I hope you have a tablet or smartphone, Android or Apple, you will be amazed at how wonderful you can access features and easily control your sound fields. You can't find a great sounding processor for less...this does not do Atmos and it's siblings, but is best for music as the object oriented sound fields they create are not best for music. The sound fields from this are much more music oriented and serves me well. Because of its ability to be controlled so well by a smartphone or tablet, I installed it in an adjoining room, amps too and am able to have a clean looking and sounding room. [ loren  Aug 22, 2016 ]
I replaced a B&K reference 50 that went bad on me. Only one location fixes them in the US now so it was not worth trying. It was a perfect replacement for me. Mine runs with a Sunfire 200 watts per channel 5 channel amp. It was everything I was looking for. I am sorry I cannot speak to SACD because I do not utilize that function. [ Kurtis  Aug 22, 2016 ]
Yamaha CX-A5000 is preamplifier/processor, it will support any audio format as long as your source is capable to play that source and outputting appropriate encoded or direct audio signal. If I correctly understood you you are planning to replace receiver which has signal processing and power amplifier in one body. In this case CX-A5000 is a great choice but you will need to add power amplifier to hook up with CA-A5000 and best match for that would be MX-A5000. [ Lev  Aug 22, 2016 ]
I use a Sunfire 5 channel amp and a Denon 2 channel amp with my CX-A5000 and have no problems. The manual for the CX-A5000 does not mention using a specific amp. so I would have to say yes, the BK would work as well as any HI-FI amplifier with RCA or Balanced connectors. The CX-A5000 does support SACD as long as you're CD player can play SACD. [ Joseph  Aug 22, 2016 ]
Yes your B&K amp will work great with this unit. It does support SACD digitally through the HDMI connection. [ Donald  Aug 22, 2016 ]
It is compatible with any configuration of Power Amplifier, with both balanced and unbalanced outputs. It does support SACD, either over HDMI or via optical/coaxial outs (HDMI better). I have been pleasantly surprised by this unit as I would not normally buy big-company stuff. It is a bargain at this price. [ William  Aug 22, 2016 ]
This unit is only 120volts 60Hz for US. Yamaha made other units for Europe and Asia voltage. There is no voltage switch on the back - strictly for US Voltage Only. I do love this unit - It is INCREDIBLE!! [ WILLIAM  Aug 05, 2015 ]
The back of my Yamaha CX-A5000 states 120 volts 60Hz. No other voltages or frequencies are specified. [ ROBERT R  Aug 05, 2015 ]
I do not know what voltages the CX-A5000 works on. I do know I sent two units back to Crutchfield because the HD tuners only worked intermittently. I finally tried the Marantz AV8801 and I love the unit. [ ROBERT B  Aug 05, 2015 ]
There are 7 different models made specifically for country-specific power requirements. The units sent to the U.S. and Canada are configured for 120 vac @ 60 Hz. There is one specifically made for Taiwan. The rest are variations on 220/240 vac 50/60 Hz. for the rest of the world. There is no "universal" power model. [ Douglas  Aug 05, 2015 ]
No it is for 120v only. They might have a 220v model I don't know, you would have to ask yamaha direct. [ William  Aug 05, 2015 ]
I have the 125 amp Outlaw Audio amp 7125 ; and I have Klipsch RS 7 towers 7.2 system, this amp with this pre-amp is perfect.. I have a large area to fill 28' x 36' and this amp is enough so the larger amp should work out. [ Ronald  Aug 22, 2016 ]
Danny, I have the cx-a5000. Unfortunately, I can't speak about the 770. I have an Mcintosh mc-402 pushing the two front sonus faber grand piano speakers. I have a 7 channel Integra research rda 7.1 amp pushing the sonus Faber center speaker, 2 b&w 600 front presence speakers, and 4 polk rti a3 sides and rear speakers. All in all, it sounds pretty good. [ STEVEN R  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I think so, but I have separate amps 3 of them are outlaw mono amps. The Yamaha comes with a mike to set up the levels to all speakers. I hope this helps. I think this is one of the best pre amps I have come across. [ William  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I don't know about using an Outlaw amp but I am using Parasound amps on my CX-A5000 and am extremely pleased. I have used several pre/pro's in the past looking for the sound that an earlier Yamaha had and was disappointed. With the CX-A5000, I was back to the sound I was missing even though all other gear hadn't changed. This is a great piece of gear. [ Douglas  Feb 23, 2015 ]
Dear Danny B, I have had this unit for over a year now and love it. I have owned every generation of Yamaha's previous flagship receivers and all were incredible units. I have this Pre-Amp hooked into the Yamaha MX-A5000 Amp (11 x 150 watts) and B&K Reference AMP (3x250 watts). I have two massive Martin Logan Prodigy's (bi-amped), one large Martin Logan Cinema Center and two smaller Martin Logan's as rears. I also have 4 small Boston Acoustics as front presence and rear surrounds. One large Margin Logan Subwoofer and one small Velodyne rear subwoofer. Your Outlaw should pair perfectly with this unit - and your klipsch speakers will be awesome. The 32 soundfields in the Yamaha are derived from exact acoustic measurements from all the great concert halls all over the world. I attend the Chicago Symphony twice a month - and insist on the musical reproduction from both the Yamaha Receiver and the Martin Logan Speakers. [ WILLIAM  Feb 23, 2015 ]
