Our take on the Yamaha DVD-S550

Whether you're having movie night with the family, listening to your favorite tunes, or showing photos of your recent vacation to your friends, the versatile DVD-S550 has you covered. You'll get an outstanding picture from your DVD library, thanks to Yamaha's high-quality construction and advanced video digital-to-analog converters. You'll also appreciate the 'S550's ability to play discs you create yourself, including CDs loaded with MP3, WMA (Windows® Media Audio), and JPEG files. A unique slide show mode simultaneously displays digital photos and plays MP3 files you've copied to the same disc.

Features

Disc Compatibility: The DVD-S550 can play pre-recorded DVD-Video, Audio CD, Video CD, and Super Video CD discs. Additionally it is compatible with recordings on DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded on CD-R or CD-RW are also supported.

DivX: The DivX 3.11, 4.x, and 5.x compression schemes are supported by the DVD-S550.

Video Circuit: The DVD-S550 uses 12-bit/108 MHz video D/A converters to ensure highly accurate playback of delicate, low-level video signals and give you a vivid picture that is faithful in every detail.

Audio Processing: This unit uses a 24-bit/192 kHz audio D/A converter to maintain extraordinary sound quality.

Screen Saver: With the screen saver feature turned on, if the player is stopped or paused for 15 minutes the screen saver engages.

NTSC/PAL Compatible: The monitor type can be set to NTSC, PAL, or Multi. If you have an NTSC TV, set the output to NTSC and PAL discs will be converted. The Auto setting switches the output to NTSC or PAL depending upon the original signal on the disc loaded.

Picture Quality Adjustments: The DVD-S550 allows you to adjust numerous picture settings individually, including contrast, brightness, tint, and color saturation.

Digital Audio Output: Depending on the input capability of your pre-amp, set the digital output to 48kHz or 96kHz. When playing copyright-protected disc, the digital output is automatically muted.

Virtual Surround: In a system without rear speakers virtual surround gives the sensation of being surrounded by multiple speakers.

MP3/WMA/JPEG Playback: This unit will play MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. JPEG files can be displayed one at a time or as a slideshow.

CD Upsampling: When playing audio CDs the sampling rate can be doubled or quadrupled for better sound quality.

Night Mode: The dynamic range is lowered in night mode, for listening at night without the loud peaks (compatible with Dolby Digital soundtracks only).

Resume Play Function: This function allows you to resume DVD playback at the point where you left off for the last ten DVDs you've played.

Slow Motion Speeds: When playing a disc with video content, you can move forward or backward through the program in one of four slow-motion speeds (1/16x, 1/8x, 1/4x, and 1/2x).

Scanning Speeds: There are five fast forward and reverse scanning speeds, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, and 32x.

Zoom: During video playback, you can enlarge the picture by 2x, 3x, or 4x. You can then use the cursor buttons to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, left, or right.

Program Playback: You can create a playlist of up to 20 video chapters or audio tracks to playback in the order you like.

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set playback restrictions for DVDs. You can select a parental control rating level from 1 to 8, which is protected by a 6-digit password. For unrated material, up to 40 discs can be individually locked, requiring the password for playback.

Sleep Timer: The player can be set to turn off automatically after 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Display Dimming: The unit's display can be adjusted in 3 steps.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Component Video Output: The DVD-S550 features a component video output, capable of passing a progressive scan signal or an interlaced video signal.

Composite/S-Video: For connecting to TVs with only composite or S-Video inputs, this unit provides one composite video and one S-Video output jack.

Digital Audio Outputs: This unit features two digital audio outputs, one optical and one coaxial. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder (Dolby Digital, DTS), or other component.

Analog Audio Outputs: In addition to the digital outputs, the unit features an analog stereo audio output for connecting to a stereo analog input on a TV or receiver. Even when the source audio is multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, DVD-Audio, SACD), these jacks will output a down-mixed 2-channel signal.
