XLR inputs with 5-channel bi-amping

Connect your preamp to this powerhouse with either unbalanced RCA cables or pro-quality balanced XLR cables. XLR connections provide an ultra low-noise signal, so all those details in your favorite songs or movie soundtracks come through clearly. If you have a 5-channel home theater with biamp-capable speakers, you can obtain greater transparency and detail through bi-amping all five speakers.

More than just raw power

A high quality power amp is all about...you guessed it: power. The MX-A5000 is built around a massive toroidal power transformer, offering up the steady stream of clean power any good amp relies upon to drive your speakers to sonic heights.

Independent symmetrical construction separates the left from the right channel circuitry, to preserve a clean signal path that improves the signal-to-noise ratio as well as widens the soundstage for exceptional 2-channel listening. The rigid chassis features a thick double bottom with steel vibration-control plates to keep this amp rock solid even during high output levels. And the current feedback design is highly responsive to changes in volume, so it can accurately keep up with explosive movie soundtracks or highly dynamic music. Weighing in at 56 pounds, you can be sure Yamaha didn't take any shortcuts when designing this heavyweight amp.

Product Research

Features

11ch Power Amplifier: Combined with Yamaha's Aventage CX-A5000 11.2 channel preamplifier (022CXA5000, sold separately), the Yamaha Aventage MX-A5000 11 channel power amplifier delivers superb sound quality and ensures an unequalled listening experience. The MX-A5000 discrete structured 11 channel power amplifier delivers and enormous amount of power for superior performance on all channels. The MX-A500 also features a highly rigid chassis design, high-quality internal parts, balanced inputs, and heavy-duty speaker outputs for optimum sound quality and reliability.

  • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the power amplifier has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and also helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
  • Current Feedback Amp + 3-Stage Darlington Circuitry: The MX-A5000 uses a current feedback power amp with a three stage Darlington circuit that has superior phase properties and is resistant to speaker impedance fluctuation. To fully realize its inherent power, it uses high quality parts with superior sound quality that were strictly selected based on listening tests.
  • Power Rating: The Yamaha MX-A5000 is equipped with a 11 channel amplifier rated at 150 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability.

Flexible Amplifier Configuration: The MX-A5000 power amp and CX-A5000 preamplifier (sold separately) are designed to allow flexible system configuration. Complementing their 11 channel output that maximizes Cinema DSP HD3 performance and makes the most of the capabilities of your speakers; they also support bi-amping for driving tweeter and woofer with separate amps, and A/B speaker configuration. Furthermore, they allow bi-amping of all five channels using the 11 internal channels. Extra amplifiers can be used to power multiple zones in addition to the main room, letting you configure your system for music play in a bedroom or kitchen. On the MX-A5000, you can switch all 11 channel input jacks back and forth between balanced and unbalanced for each channel, further increasing system flexibility.

Highly Rigid Chassis: The Yamaha Aventage MX-A5000 employs an advanced chassis with strong rigidity. Its chassis stiffness is enhanced by an H-shaped cross frame that boosts mechanical strength, by adopting aluminum side panels that increase the stiffness of the housing and by a three-ply structure with independent top cover and side panels. Any external vibration from the rack or other sources is damped by heavy insulators. The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge in the center of the bottom cover acts as an additional vibration countermeasure and firmly supports the internal circuits and delicate parts. In addition, the MX-A5000 has a double bottom, consisting of vibration control plates made of 1/8" thick black steel. In order to support the heavy heat sinks and other parts, it has a left-right independent construction strengthened by a rigid-frame structure. The bottom frame reduces the transmission of vibration produced by the large power supply transformer and heat sinks. It also incorporates a heavy insulator that blocks external vibration.

Robust Power Supply: The power supply transformer is a specially developed high output, high efficiency, large size toroidal transformer. With two specially developed high capacity (27,000μF) block capacitors, it minimizes energy loss and features power supply capacity with generous headroom. This ensures sound capable of superior musical expression.

Balanced Connectivity: Electrical noise may be generated due to connection with other AV components and even to the connection between them, as well as from other sources of external noise. To ensure that the MX-A5000 and CX-A5000 are not affected by this distortion, 11 balanced connections that are highly noise resistant were used, the same type generally used in pro audio equipment. Even the 11 RCA unbalanced connection uses a ground sensing transmission method that achieves simple balanced transmission. And in cases such as that where each channel with the XLR is used selectively, the impact of noise flowing between the preamp and the chassis of the power amp is removed, minimizing sound quality deterioration due to the connection.

Gold-Plated Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The speaker output terminals are high quality gold-plated types and are compatible with bare wire (up to 8AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only) for optimum speaker connectivity. The impedance selector on the rear panel of the MX-A5000 matches amplifier output current to various speaker impedances (4-, 6, or 8-ohm). There are twenty six speaker terminals; CH.1 (+/-), CH.2 A&B L/R (+/-), CH.3 L/R (+/-), CH.4 L/R (+/-), CH.5 L/R (+/-), and CH.6 L/R (+/-).

Trigger Input/Output: The trigger function allows automatic power synchronization with other components that support this function. Connecting a preamplifier, for example, to the "Trigger In" jack turns the power on and off together with the preamp. Connecting another component such as a subwoofer to the "Trigger Out" jack syncs the power of that component to the MX-A5000. In addition, the input from the "Trigger In" jack can be output in a cascade connection to control the power of another component such as another power amplifier.

Auto Power Standby: The MX-A5000 has an Auto Power Standby function that will turn the power off after eight hours. It can be turned on and off via a rear panel switch and will be overridden by the trigger function.

Q
can both bi-amping (outputs 2A and 3) be used for the mains when you are also driving 2 pairs of main L/R fronts? That is have a "B" set of speakers hooked up to 2B outputs? The manual talks about how to do these things but doesn't reference if both can or cannot be done?
christopher  May 24, 2017
1 answer
A
This amp has the ability to use a single input to feed audio to 2 channels (that's the purpose of the switches on some of the amp channels) at once which means the amp can bi-amp speakers without the preamp processor needing to use its processing power for bi-amping . Now as long as the preamp processor you use with it can support an A/B speaker setup, then you will be able bi-amp both A and B channels in a 5.1 speaker system with B speakers. Feel free to call an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for additional help or for help choosing a preamp processor. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Q
How many watts does it run on for 4 Omhs all channel? Or is it 150 watts altogether on all omhs both 4,6,8
justin  Jul 01, 2015

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yamaha doesn't provide us with the power per channel when it's at 4 ohms. It's 150 watts at 8 ohms and 170 watts at 6 ohms. I would say that it's close to 190-200 watts at 4 ohms. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Can I use both 8 Ohm and 4 Ohm speakers playing simultaneously in this amp ?
jacky  Nov 21, 2014
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: As long as you aren't hooking up 8 ohm and 4 ohm speakers on the same channel you will be fine. Each speaker needs to be on its own channel. I hope this information helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
This is a huge amp yet only provides 150 w/ per channel with two channels driven. Am I correct to think this is very weak? So if it is pushing even 7 channels it is maybe 50 watts per channel?

Hi B, I bought this unit last Dec 2013 along with the CX-A5000 surround preamp. This amplifier is 11 separate amps - each runs at 150watts (8 ohm speakers). You can even run 3 of the channels as bi-amplified paired with 3 other paired channels (L,R,C) if you want to power your tweeter/midrange and woofers separately. The unit is totally quiet - looks stunning, and is very musical as you would expect from Yamaha. Currently I have a 11.2 set up - so I use every amp in this unit on each speaker - then two subs with their own built in amps. Also the inputs can be switched between standard RCA and balanced inputs - for all 11 channels - nice!! And it has a 12v trigger!

Q
how do u control the volume at each channel? i'd like to pair this with my Yamaha receiver....
gerald  Mar 17, 2014
1 answer
A
Most Yamaha receivers have Pre-Out (RCA) jacks for Left/Center/Right; Left Rear/Right Rear; and some have Left Surround Back and Right Surround Back along with a Subwoofer RCA out. You would connect your Receiver's Pre-Out RCA with a standard Male/Male RCA audio cable - that then connects tot he MX-A5000 amp. The MX-A5000 does not have volume control. The volume is controlled by your Yamaha Receiver - which regulates the Pre-Out RCA signals. If you have YPAO on your Yamaha Receiver - it will automatically set up the volume - otherwise to into the Receiver's Set Up menu to manually control the volume for each speaker. I recently bought this 11 channel amp and LOVE IT!!
