Give your digital music files some love

There are lots of ways to add digital music to your home stereo. But if your top priority is audiophile-quality sound, then the Yamaha NP-S2000 is a smart choice. If you have a large digital music collection stored on a networked PC or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, this digital music player is a simple and great-sounding way to play those tunes through your home speakers. Whether you have MP3s, CD-quality Apple lossless files, or high-resolution FLAC or AIFF files, the NP-S2000 will deliver your tunes with precision. Plus, it offers built-in access to hundreds of free Internet radio stations, helping them sound their best and offering presets for up to 20 favorites. Connect this player to your network router and your home theater receiver or integrated amplifier to bridge the gap between your digital music collection and your home speakers, without losing musical details in the process.

Putting sound quality first

Yamaha knows digital music files deserve better than being relegated to smartphones and stock earbuds. A well-designed component like the NP-S2000 can reveal your digital music's sonic potential, particularly when playing lossless files. This player features dual Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters, with one dedicated to the left channel and one to the right, for a more accurate presentation. After conversion, the signal is transmitted through balanced circuitry all the way to the XLR balanced outputs dynamic, ultra-low-noise sound. Even using the RCA stereo outputs, your music will benefit from separate power supplies for the digital and analog circuitry with separate windings for the left and right channels from each. This ensures a clean signal and minimizes interference. And because there's no wireless receiver or disc drive motor, distortion is kept to a vanishingly low level. Your music is delivered as precisely as possible, preserving all the detail and nuance of the original recording.

Works with PCs, NAS drives, and Macs

Most computers and networked storage drives that use Microsoft Windows® are DLNA-compatible, and the NP-S2000 speaks DLNA fluently. It can access music files stored on these devices over your home network for playback through your connected stereo system. Have a Mac®? Then download the Twonky™ media server software, which acts as a DLNA client for your iTunes® library. The NP-S2000 comes with a license for Twonky, so you can install it on your computer and start streaming music from iTunes. Even if your computer or hard drive is stowed away in the basement, a network connection ensures you can enjoy the thousands of songs in your collection through your main system with the NP-S2000.

Smartphone and web browser setup and control

Keep your smartphone handy when you're ready to enjoy music with the NP-S2000. Yamaha's Network Player Controller app for Apple® and Android™ devices lets you choose songs from your computer or hard drive to play on this network player. You can also use your PC's web browser to set up the player, tweak settings, and play music. Your browser also lets you choose up to 20 favorite Internet radio stations for easy instant recall from your smartphone or the included remote.

Yamaha NP-S2000

Written by: Chris B. from Valencia, California on June 21, 2015

I'm writing this review in the event that someone wants to know my thoughts. I'm not sure why Yamaha stopped production of this unit, but the NP-S2000 is Spectacular! When I purchased my Yamaha A-S2000 from Crutchfield in April of 2014 I wanted to get the companion, same series, Yamaha Network Player - but they where no longer available. Like the Yamaha A-S2000 and A-S2100 which I own both and have also reviewed on Crutchfield, the Yamaha NP-S2000 is built like a tank. Sound quality is superb and it also has balanced outputs. For a 1U rack component, this unit is deceiving when you go to lift it, it weighs nearly 30lbs!.

If you want the "matching" Network Player companion for your Yamaha A-S2000 or A-S2100, you can't go wrong with the NP-S2000. It is still supported by Yamaha with Firmware updates, these are acquired by pressing a sequence of front panel menu buttons, when the Network Player is plugged into the Internet.

if you can find one for under $1K, acquire it! You won't be disappointed!

Pros: Balanced Outputs make it the perfect companion for the Yamaha A-S2000, A-S2100 or A-S3000 integrated amplifiers. The build construction if 5-Star. Separate Power Supplies for Digital and Analog. Built like a Tank!

Cons: Bit pricy, but if you can find one for ~$1K, worth every penny.

Mac-friendly, brings digital bliss to my analog system.

I never thought I'd be able to afford, much less own, one of these amazing gems from Yamaha until I discovered Crutchfield's astonishing "special purchase" offering! The NP-S2000 brings my iTunes collection and internet radio into my analog hi-fi system, transforming the music into pure aural bliss thanks to the dedicated Burr-Brown DACs and symmetrically balanced power, circuitry and outputs. This is an audiophile quality, superbly crafted masterpiece that perfectly complements my Yamaha A-S1000 amplifier.

I was a bit nervous about how seamlessly it would work with a Mac OSX (Snow Leopard) environment, but the unit plays well with my Airport network and computers, as well as my iPhone 4- thanks to Yamaha's excellent free controller app (which far surpasses the NP-S2000's native remote).

I love the gapless playback feature, and while I'm a huge vinyl enthusiast, being able to bring global internet radio and my own digital playlists alongside my turntable is a fantastic achievement. Don't let the slim, minimalist design of this unit fool you; the NP-S2000 is a very heavy but sophisticated beast that delivers an outstanding, articulate, incredibly satisfying musical experience.

Pros: Delivers richly detailed sound from a wide variety of musical genres and digital sources. Gapless playback. Mac-friendly. First-class design and construction at an unbelievable value. Excellent addition to an otherwise analog audio system.

Cons: If you have a smartphone or tablet, don't waste your time with the included remote. Yamaha's impressive free app leaves it in the dust.

A perfect companion to the A-S2000

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This a true high end network player with balanced outputs and an amazing DAC built in.

Pros: Reference sound quality with xlr outputs

Cons: Gets a little warmer than I would expect.

Gapless Playback: Usually, when playing a sound source with continuous music, classical music, or a live album (gapless album), for example, the delay in transmission of song data from an NAS or PC causes silent intervals between tracks. The NP-S2000 reads the next song data in advance according to the network environment, or NAS or PC transmission delay, before the current song is finished. This eliminates the soundless interval so the music can be enjoyed with no interruptions. Compatible with gapless play of WAV and FLAC file formats.

Audio Section

Mech-Less Design: The Yamaha NP-S2000 network audio player does not have its own hard drive, DVD/CD mechanism, or motor. This means no noise caused by hard drive motors and actuators, no mechanism noise, and no jitter from data buffering. The sound you hear has much greater clarity, detail and presence.

Dual Dacs: Two high-precision Burr-Brown D/A converters are used, dedicated to the left and right stereo channels. The outputs are then sent through balanced transmission circuits. When connected to an integrated amplifier with a balanced input (such as the Yamaha A-S2000; sold separately), the result is dramatically higher sound purity than from conventional systems.

Independent Power Supplies: The NP-S2000 uses two high performance power supplies, a toroidal transformer for the analog section and an IE core transformer for the digital section. This ensures higher, more stable power, while allowing the two sections to be completely isolated to prevent any interference.

Analog & Digital Outputs: The Yamaha network audio player is fitted with both analog (RCA/XLR) and digital (optical/coaxial) audio outputs to connect the unit to your home entertainment system.

  • Balanced and Unbalanced Analog Audio Outputs: The network audio player is equipped with one set of unbalanced stereo RCA jacks to connect to your home stereo receiver and a pair of balanced XLR jacks to connect to your high-end integrated amplifier.
  • Digital Audio Outputs: The NP-S2000 features an optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital output. This unit can output digital signals up to 192kHz/24-bits linear PCM.

Other Features

FL Display: The Yamaha network audio player features a front-panel full dot matrix display that shows the current status of the unit. The unit displays song/artist information from your DLNA server, iTunes, or Internet Radio. Supports English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese text.

Front-Panel Controls: The NP-S2000 features a Power on/off switch, two push-buttons (Source/Return), and a 3-way rotary dial across its front-panel for basic operation. The 3-way rotary dial is multipurpose; it allows you to select menu items, as well as perform Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track playback functions. The front-panel display offers four brightness settings.

Remote Control: The Yamaha NP-S2000 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the unit. With the remote control, you can select a playback source and operate this unit while viewing information on the front-panel display of the unit.
