Our take on the Yamaha PRO 300

by David Brown
Yamaha

Great sound to go from Yamaha

Yamaha understands how to deliver clear, natural sound. Now they are taking it straight to your ears with their new line of slick-looking headphones. The PRO 300s are lightweight on-ear headphones designed for enjoying music anywhere. Yamaha's proprietary neodymium-magnet drivers are engineered for maximum efficiency, so your portable player can easily drive the PRO 300 to make your music pop with detail and bounce with bass.

Yamaha PRO 300 with in-line remote and microphone

The PRO 300's in-line remote lets you control music playback and take calls on an iPhone.

Made for your iPhone® and iPod®

When you're listening on the go, it's always easier to control your music with an in-line remote. The PRO 300 features a three-button remote for volume and track control without removing your iPod or iPhone from your pocket or purse. And the built-in microphone lets you make phone calls on your iPhone as well, with the remote providing convenient answer and hang-up functions.

Look good, feel good

Cleverly designed to highlight Yamaha's iconic logo on the earcups, remote and miniplug connector, the PRO 300 headphones are as stylish as they are comfortable. The soft earpads rest gently against your ears, while the sturdy headband provides just the right amount of clamping force to keep them secure without feeling too tight. Fold them up, stash them in the soft carrying case, and you're ready to go.

  • 3-button in-line remote for track and volume control with iPhone, iPod and iPad
  • built-in microphone on remote for taking phone calls with an iPhone

Features

Overview: The Yamaha PRO 300 on-ear headphones are sleek and lightweight. The compact folding design lets you collapse them and store them in the included soft zippered case. They have a tangle-resistant 4' flat cable with an in-line remote and microphone so you can control your music and phone calls with ease.

Audio Quality: The PRO 300 headphones deliver superb audio performance. The newly-developed Yamaha-proprietary drivers have powerful neodymium magnets that make them easy to drive with today's portable electronic devices. You'll get deep, tight bass and clean, clear highs and mids with a realistic soundstage.

Comfort: The soft padded ear cushions and adjustable headband give you hours of listening pleasure without fatigue. The headband is shaped to apply just the right amount of pressure--not too tight, but snug enough to isolate much of the exterior noise.

Cable: The 4' tangle-resistant flat cable separates the internal cores to minimize interference. It is coated with a durable rubber-like material to reduce contact noise. The cable terminates into a right-angled 3.5mm plug. A gold-plated 1/4" adapter is included for listening to your home audio equipment.

In-line Remote/Mic: The PRO 300 cable has an in-line remote control and microphone that is optimized for Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The 3-button remote has "+" and "-" buttons for raising and lowering the volume, while the center button controls your music (play, pause, skip to next song, skip to the previous song) and your phone calls (answer call, end call). The remote/mic is compatible with:

  • iPod:
    • shuffle: 3rd generation and later
    • nano: 4th generation and later
    • classic: 120 GB, 160 GB
    • touch: 2nd generation and later
  • iPhone: 3GS, 4, 4S, 5
  • iPad: iPad and iPad2

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 20Hz-20kHz
  • Sensitivity (dB/1mW): 107dB
  • Nominal Impedance: 53 ohms

Comment by Ralph Graves Staff Writer - Creative,

Good value, great sound

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 1/3/2013 11:12:00 AM

The box says these are "noise-isolation" headphones. Normally, that just means over-the-ear, but in this case, it means more. The PRO 300's have small earcups that form a tight seal over the ear, significantly reducing ambient noises. Yet the headphones fit comfortably without any undue pressure.

The PRO 300's delivered nice, naturally balanced sound. The drivers seemd voiced in such a way that they added little additional coloration to the sound. And that can be a good thing. We use the same selections in the Crutchfield Labs for a purpose — we know how they're supposed to sound. The tunes played through the PRO 300's were reproduced with accuracy and clarity.

Yamaha PRO 300

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After four uses these fell apart. The right ear piece separated from the headband. The headband separated when I was adjusting the ear placement and I wasn't able to get it back into place. The sound is great but the comfort needed a tweak and I hoped it would do as other headphones I own and adjust, but it failed.
Pros:
Sound is very good. Looks nice.
Cons:
Build quality is lacking strength. When I called Crutchfield I was referred to Yamaha. The rep. I spoke to at Yamaha said he has had the problem 1000 times (might be an exaggeration on his part). He told me what form to fill out for a return replacement. Trouble with this approach is I don't want another pair that will probably do the same.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with my Yamaha headphones. I use them at the gym during my workouts. I do not have the background noise as in my previous headphones. I am very pleased with the background noise reduction and the clearness of the music I am listening to. Thank you for an excellent product.
