Yamaha PRO 500 headphones

Aluminum alloy earcups with dual minijack inputs, along with well-balanced sound, make the PRO 500 headphones stand out. (Blue model shown)

Fashion never sounded so good

Yamaha knows how to design audio equipment for outstanding sound. But as their PRO series of headphones shows, they know something about style, too. Their flagship PRO 500 combines cool looks with well-balanced sound that brings your music into focus with rich detail, natural midrange and deep, full bass. The powerful 50mm drivers are housed in durable aluminum alloy earcups. The drivers are designed for maximum efficiency and are easily powered by your mobile device, so you can enjoy the PRO 500's finely-tuned sound whether you plug them into your home stereo or your iPhone®.

iPhone controls when you want them

If you prefer mobile listening, Yamaha has you covered. The PRO 500 features a three-button remote for volume and track control without removing your iPod® or iPhone from your pocket or purse. And the built-in microphone lets you make phone calls on your iPhone as well, with the remote providing convenient answer and hang-up functions. If your mobile device isn't compatible with Yamaha's remote, you can swap out the detachable cord with the included standard cable or add an aftermarket cord designed for your particular device. Whichever cable you choose, you can plug it into either earcup as each is equipped with a miniplug input.

Yamaha PRO 500 with in-line remote and microphone

The PRO 500's in-line remote lets you control music playback and take calls on an iPhone.

Built for home and away

Cleverly designed to highlight Yamaha's iconic tuning fork logo on the earcups, remote and miniplug connector, the PRO 500 headphones are as stylish as they are comfortable. The nicely cushioned earcups fit snugly around your ears, while the sturdy headband provides just the right amount of clamping force to keep them secure without feeling too tight. The around-the-ear design also provides excellent noise isolation, so you can enjoy your music without external sounds leaking in. It also means you can listen anywhere without sound leaking out and disturbing others, whether you're in the office, the library or on the go. Fold them up and stash them in the carrying case for instant portability.

Features

Overview: The Yamaha PRO 500 headphones feature high-grade aluminum alloy earcups, with an over-the-ear design to isolate noise. The folding design lets you collapse them and store them in the included semi-hard zippered case. They come with two tangle-resistant flat cables: a 4' cable with an in-line remote and microphone so you can control your music and phone calls with ease, and a 10' cable to use at home or in the studio.

Audio Quality: The PRO 500 headphones deliver superb audio performance. The newly-developed 50mm Yamaha-proprietary drivers have powerful neodymium magnets that make them easy to drive with today's portable electronic devices. You'll get accurate musical reproduction for most any kind of music. The over-ear design shuts out external sound so you're only hearing the music, not the outside world.

Comfort: The soft padded ear cushions and adjustable headband give you hours of listening pleasure without fatigue. The headband is shaped to apply just the right amount of pressure--not too tight, but snug enough to isolate much of the exterior noise.

Dual Inputs: The headphones have 3.5mm input ports on both earcups to give you the option of which side to connect the cable.

Cables: The PRO 500s come with two cables: one for portable use and the other for home/studio use. The tangle-resistant flat cables separate the internal cores to minimize interference. They are coated with a durable rubber-like material to reduce contact noise. The 4' cable terminates into a right-angled 3.5mm plug, while the 10' cable has a straight 3.5mm plug. A gold-plated 1/4" adapter is included for listening to your home audio equipment.

In-line Remote/Mic: The PRO 500's 4' cable has an in-line remote control and microphone that is optimized for Apple iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The 3-button remote has "+" and "-" buttons for raising and lowering the volume, while the center button controls your music (play, pause, skip to next song, skip to the previous song) and your phone calls (answer call, end call). The remote/mic is compatible with:

  • iPod:
    • shuffle: 3rd generation and later
    • nano: 4th generation and later
    • classic: 120 GB, 160 GB
    • touch: 2nd generation and later
  • iPhone: 3GS, 4, 4S, 5
  • iPad: iPad and iPad2

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 20Hz-20kHz
  • Sensitivity (dB/1mW): 106dB
  • Nominal Impedance: 23 ohms

Best Closed Headphone

The Yamaha Pro 500 is the best sounding closed headphone available at any price. If you are looking for the best sounding closed back headphone, then this is it. I have owned all the other $200 - $400 headphones and none of them offer the frequency response, the articulation, the clarity, or the dynamics, of the Yamaha Pro 500.....And im talking about the B&W P7, the Sennheiser Momentum, the KEF M500, the Shure 1840, the Beyer DT series, the PSB Mu4, the Nad Viso 50, or the HiFi Man HE-400, and all the others that you can buy in this price range.

Pros: Hi Fi Audiophile sound that is miles ahead of the B&W P7 or the Sennheiser Momentum or any of others that are highly reviewed as i own them all.....or have owned them all including the NAD Viso and the PSB Mu4 and the KEF 500s and the HiFI Man 400.. I tried all the $200 - $400 headphones including the Focal headphones and t No other closed headphone in production that delivers this quality of Hi FI sound. Its dynamic, articulate, accurate, and does not suffer from any type of frequency flaw

Cons: Not comfortable to wear at all. It a bit heavy and the ear cups are not the best design regarding comfort. So, this a "Catch 22" headphone.....In that it offers the absolute best sound you can buy in a closed headphone, but its very uncomfortable to wear for extended periods.

a two-edged sword

Excellent voice reproduction, very forward, crisp, clear, airy. Treble range equally noteworthy. Bass slightly emphasized, but not intrusive. Well deserving of 5-Star status... in audio quality. But seriously fails in an equally vital aspect: comfort. Discomfort. Elusive in finding a comfortable head-position... suggestive of a failing of inherent product design, should better adapt to the average user's head. Warmth and moisture buildup in the cups after an hour. Edging toward uncomfortable after an hour of wear time... while one ironically enjoys the audio reproduction. The phones are clearly "A Tale of Two Cities." Good - Bad in the same breath. In context of this price, definitely a poor value; surprising that design-comfort was so noticeably overlooked. Full disclosure: "half-price" buying opportunity (when buying a Yamaha receiver was the attraction). Yet, even at half-price still not a good value - wearing discomfort ultimately overrides audio quality. Price irrelevant. Second discomfort factor is weight. Heavy. 50-100% heavier than other phones! A major difference (others typically in the 5-9 oz range; these at 13 and though the difference appears modest - it's significant. Weight+discomfort = two-thumbs down (despite the audio quality). Incidental, but odd: the packaging of these phones - one might wonder if $100 went into that aspect! I've never seen anything like it in this modern era, but the answer is obvious: who cares once opened? Misplaced values.

Pros: Audio quality, superb voicing and clarity. Clean bass with a slight boost. Volume sensitivity is excellent, the receiver's volume knob often reduced - vs - direct hearing from high-end efficient speakers. "Coolness Factor"... who cares? I'm surprised Crutchfield even includes it as an attribute when other aspects of insight hold far-greater significance.

Cons: Physical Weight. Discomfort of head-fit. Two negative factors - and they are appreciable! No amount of adjustment or tweaks delivers a solution of longer-term comfort. Wear time limited to about an hour before the "take-off" urge strikes, i.e., "my ear lobes and skull need a rest". Cup-softness somewhat lacking, possibly even a too-small interior diameter.Excellent audio quality tempered by the discomfort factor - it exists in stark contradiction. "What were the Yamaha designers thinking?

I had to post a review of these headphones because they WOWED me that much! Believe me I own a TON of different headphones ranging from $69 to $1500 and these Yamaha cans surprised me more than any other set of cans I've purchased. For one they are just dead gorgeous and build quality seems just as solid as all my other high end cans. These are passive noise canceling cans and my wife did give me a look when I started putting the power to them so I'm certain see could hear the music to some degree.........not a deal breaker for me though. To me these sound great........that's the sweet part.....these definitely hit the spot for me and now these are my goto cans! They seem to hit ever beat with authority which is what i love! I've always read where people say they here things in their music that they've never heard before and these cans bring that to table! Yamaha hit the nail on the head with these headphones and I now have a completely different look at Yamaha's sound division! They are quite comfortable for my head as well with me not having to stretch the headband one bit. Oh and before I forget did I mention how GREAT these things sounded? AWESOME

Thumbs up Yamaha!!!

Pros: Sound is Unbelievable Dead Sexy Very Comfortable SOUND SOUND SOUND

Cons: Are you kidding?

Product reviews from the Crutchfield Labs

Yamaha's flagship headphones won't disappoint

Written by Chris, Advisor, on 11/7/2013 3:02:00 PM

I recently wrote a short review on the PRO-Series 400 headphones from Yamaha. Since I couldn't keep those jewels hidden forever at my desk and had to give them back, I picked these 500's up on my way out (grinning of course).

First impression, they look and feel very, very similar... because they are. There are only a couple of differences. The 500's have alloy earcups and they allow you to plug the cable into your choice of the left or right side. I know, you're thinking why does that matter? I thought that too until I used them a while. Turns out, it proved a little bit useful. I have dual monitors at work and focus mostly on the right one. With the 400's, when I'd turn my head sometimes the plug would grab my collar on my button down shirt on the left side. I didn't find it too annoying, but I noticed it. Then when using the 500's I switched it to the other side and voila, small problem, easy fix.

How about the sound? The difference was really subtle and I had to focus to hear much at all. I think the culprit here though is my source material. As mentioned in the other review, I'm plugged in to my PC with no additional headphone amp and I'm listening to Pandora which is highly compressed. I think with a good source and perhaps a headphone amp, the difference would be greater. At any rate, I love both sets of these 'phones.
