Our take on the Yamaha R-N500

by David Brown
Yamaha

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

Stereo sound meets networking convenience

Why should home theater receivers get to have all the fun? That's the question that prompted Yamaha to design the R-N500 stereo receiver with network capability. Where many stereo receivers stop short of streaming music options, the R-N500 embraces them with full support for Apple AirPlay and DLNA-compatible devices as well. Connect this receiver to your home network router and turn your compatible computer, smartphone, and tablet into bona fide wireless sources. They'll make sweet music alongside your CD and Blu-ray players, turntable, and other components thanks to the R-N500's high-power, low-noise construction.

Stream your iTunes® library wirelessly with AirPlay

If you use any Apple portable devices or iTunes on your computer, then you'll love the R-N500's built-in support for Apple AirPlay. It lets you stream music directly from an iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®, no wires required. Plus, if you have a large iTunes library on a networked computer, all those songs can be sent to the receiver as well. If you're not an Apple user, this receiver's DLNA-compatibility opens up wireless streaming to compatible PCs, music servers, and Android™ devices. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network or a wireless connection using the optional Yamaha Wi-Fi adapter.

Free control app for Apple and Android

A network connection also offers you the opportunity for smartphone control using Yamaha's free Network Player Controller app. Download it to your Apple or Android device to use it as Wi-Fi® remote. It lets you select streaming music options and even view album artwork with select sources. Yamaha plans future firmware upgrades to add more Internet music choices to the R-N500.

Modern sources are welcome, as well as legacy components

In addition to network sources, the R-N500 offers plenty of digital and analog inputs for sources like disc players, turntables, and even cassette decks for audio dubbing. Or if you're interested in more modern equipment, there's a front-panel USB port. It offers a direct digital connection for iPods, iPads, and iPhones. It also accepts USB thumb drives — perfect for loading high-resolution FLAC and WAV files to take advantage of this player's 24-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog conversion.

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance. With 80 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.04% THD), the R-N500 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A & B speakers at the same time.

Audio Settings: The R-N500 network receiver offers a variety of audio adjustments to customize the sound of your music.

  • Tone Control: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (20Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. You can also balance your connected speakers left to right.
  • Loudness Control: The R-N500 also features a dedicated loudness control on the front-panel, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low and high frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level, compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.
  • Pure Direct: Engaging the Pure Direct switch causes the audio signal to bypass the control circuits for bass and treble, balance and the back buffer amp. This improves sound quality while maintaining full output capacity. Shortening the signal route improves sound purity, helping to reproduce even the most delicate musical nuances.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha R-N500 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

  • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
  • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
  • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Analog + Digital Inputs: The Yamaha R-N500 offers both analog and digital audio inputs in order to connect a variety of source components.

  • Analog Audio Inputs: The Yamaha network receiver features five analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to five audio components, and two stereo RCA record outputs to connect to a CD-recorder and other recording device. Included in the five analog inputs is a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.
  • Digital Audio Inputs: The R-N500 is equipped for digital audio input, with both optical and coaxial terminals. The two optical inputs are for receiving audio from a TV and Satellite/Cable box, while the two coaxial inputs are used for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player and CD player. The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The R-N500 is fitted with A & B speaker terminals so you can power up to two pair of speakers. The speaker selector switch on the front-panel of the receiver makes it easy to switch between speaker outputs, allowing you to hear the sound from one speaker pair (A or B) or from both speaker pairs (A+B). In addition, compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A & B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel). The eight binding-post speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). You can select 8 ohms or 4 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application.

Subwoofer Output: The network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub.

Headphone Jack: The Yamaha R-N500 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphone, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

Network & Tuner Functions

Ethernet LAN Port (optional WiFi): The Yamaha network receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server, or Internet Radio. There is also a rear-panel USB type-A port (5V/0.5A) that allows you to connect Yamaha's YWA-10 wireless network adapter (022YWA10, sold separately) for a wireless network connection.

DLNA 1.5/Windows 7 Certified: The R-N500 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. You can use your PC to play high-bit rate music content through your audio system, or use the R-N500 to browse and play music files on your hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the network receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's on-screen menu (via HDMI). The Yamaha receive supports the playback of the following music files.

  • MP3 (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
  • WMA (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
  • AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
  • WAV (up to 192kHz/24-bit)
  • FLAC (up to 192kHz/24-bit)
Note: The network receiver supports the following music servers - (1) PC with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed, (2) PC with DLNA/UPnP Certificate server software installed, (3) NAS with DLNA/UPnP certification.

Internet Radio: The Yamaha R-N500's network connection provides access to Pandora and vTuner Internet Radio. You can control the Internet Radio services from the network receiver's remote control and front-panel display. The receiver's front-panel display will indicate station name, album name, song title, and elapsed time.

  • Pandora: Pandora is free, personalized radio that plays music and comedy you'll love. Just start with the name of one of your favorite artists, songs, comedians or composers and Pandora will create a custom station that plays similar tracks. You can also rate (thumbs up/thumbs down) songs as they play, and Pandora will adapt stations to your feedback. You can even bookmark up to 100 stations and easily switch between favorites.
  • vTuner: You can also listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world. You can search for Internet Radio stations by Location, Genre, New, Popular, or Podcast.

AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha R-N500 network receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The R-N500 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning). You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations. An indoor FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included with the receiver.

Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates normally take approximately 20 minutes or longer. The test network stereo receiver contained firmware version 1.03 (as of 11/15/2013). Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.

USB/iPod/Bluetooth Integration

USB Port: This network stereo receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy MP3 (up to 48kHz/320kbps), WMA (up to 48kHz/320kbps), AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps), WAV (up to 192kHz/24-bit), and FLAC (up to 192kHz/24-bit) music files from a USB mass storage class memory device; such as your Android smartphone, portable MP3 player or USB thumbdrive (not compatible with USB HDDs). Your USB mass storage class device must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32 . Using the unit's front-panel display and included remote control, you can browse your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the network stereo receiver's USB port (5V/2.1A); even in standby mode.

iPod/iPhone Integration: The network stereo receiver supports connection of your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad through its USB port or via AirPlay.

  • AirPlay: This network stereo receiver supports AirPlay, which means it can accept wireless music streaming from your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad; as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy your iTunes music from your mobile Apple iOS device or computer on your home theater system. You can even view metadata such as song title, artist name, as well as album art via network stereo receiver's on-screen display. In addition, you can download Apple's free "Remote" application and use your Apple device as the remote control for your iTunes account. To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.2.2 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.
  • iPod/iPhone Direct: The USB (type-A) port on the front-panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone so you can listen to your stored music and music apps through the Yamaha network stereo receiver. The iPod/iPhone USB digital connection means that the digital audio signal from your iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the system, minimizing noise interference and allowing use of the receiver's DAC, not the DAC in your iPod/iPhone. This results in more precise sound reproduction. You can choose to control your Apple device from its own touchscreen/clickwheel or from the network receiver. Using the unit's front-panel display and included remote control, you can browse your iPod/iPhone's stored music content via Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, or Composer. You can also control Repeat & Shuffle functions. Basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) for music apps can also be controlled by the network receiver's remote. Song/artist information from stored music and music apps on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected the unit's front-panel display. Your iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (max. 2.1A).

Great features, needs a preamp output

Written By HTnewbie, Fargo, ND on Thursday, August 07, 2014

I wanted to connect the R-N500 to living room speakers and bedroom speakers with the digital audio coming from a combination of Blu-Ray, Cable and 2 TV sources. It has (almost) all of the features that I was looking for. It even has an input for an IR extender. It was going to replace a 50W Lepai class-T mini-amp. After extensive listening to it I decided that I wasn't happy with the quality of the sound. Because of amplifier distortion, I wasn't able to tell the difference between an 128K MP3 and a CD. I would have kept it if it had a preamp output (and a switched power socket) and I could have connected it to the external amplifier. I also wasn't able to make use of the odd loudness control. The reason that I tried the R-N500 is because I really like the Yamaha CD-N500 on my Hi-Fi.
Pros:
The digital features are great. The digital sources via Airplay, DLNA NAS, Pandora and Vtuner work great. The USB input plays all the formats I use including ALAC and FLAC.
Cons:
The amplifier section has audible digital distortion. There is no preamp output to bypass the amplifier. The display quality does not match the CD-N500. The digital coax & optical inputs only decode stereo PCM. There is low bass output from the analog sources, compared to the digital sources. The mute/squelch on the FM radio cuts in too often on some stations that should have a strong enough signal.

Not so fast

Written By Colin, Rhode island on Sunday, July 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must admit I hesitated when this product was suggested. I mean I had other Yamaha receivers in the past and I have never really been satisfied. But I figured times change and maybe this time with modern advances in WiFi and the like things might be good. I give this receiver 3 stars because of the WiFi and Airplay and although I feel WiFi still has a ways to go in quality it is what is good about the receiver. The bad you ask? The bad is in overall sound quality. After hearing it again, I realized why I didn't appreciate Yamaha receivers. The sound is muddled at best. Not at all bright. There seems to be enough power but I feel like I am listening to my music through peanut butter. I tried everything I knew how to do to improve the sound playing through my Martin Logan towers, but it proved futile. I gave up and returned the receiver after two weeks of tweaking. I am excited to see that Harman Kardon receiver that has more power, what I feel is a more traditional sound quality and Bluetooth technology. I am hopeful that my new choice with easily beat this Yamaha receiver, but I haven't actually received it yet so stay tuned.....
Pros:
WiFi even in my expansive living space seemed to work very well overall with just a few minor worries. Airplay worked flawlessly. Easy set up.
Cons:
Although the WiFi had worked well. It didn't seem to care for my wife's hair dryer. The sound is muddled and less than bright. Bass response was good with standard music but with anything in sub depths, peanut butter sound. The remote app from Yamaha seems to be lacking a choice to simply power down. Although it may have that feature by then I was done with the receivers sound.

A joyous sound!

Written By Beatlefan6, Decatur, IL on Saturday, July 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am 54 and haven't purchased a quality stereo receiver since 1983. I did enough research to know exactly what bells and whistles I wanted from my new receiver. But most important to me was a clean/clear but powerful 2 channel sound. It also had to be Bluetooth compatible for wireless internet music. Crutchfield suggested this receiver and one other one. This Yamaha receiver really delivers the goods and then some. A real bonus is the easy hookup and quality Yamaha Bluetooth adapter (purchased separately from Crutchfield) that works great. I am old school and wanted the power to crank it up when in the mood. No problem there. It can get loud! With a little practice I have learned to also appreciate the "loudness" control feature. With this feature the sound quality is still full even at low volume. Bottom line...I love it. I have it paired with my PSB Image B6 speakers. I highly recommend the Yamaha N500.
Pros:
Clean powerful sound. Wi-Fi, easy hookup, ease of use, Yamaha dependability, and of course Crufchfield's customer service.
Cons:
Bluetooth not built in. Not a big deal since there is an adapter.

Yamaha Net Player

Written By WJS, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, July 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a great purchase. I am replacing a 15 year old receiver because I got new Klipsch reference speakers. Easy to hook up to the net, has an Iphone app that controls source and volume, and the Pandora sounds better than my CD player. Lots of digital hook up, welcome to the next phase of home stereo!
Pros:
Sounds great, easy to install, streams music flawlessly
Cons:
Now I have to upgrade the rest of my components because this receiver sounds better alone than playing CD's with the old player!

Yamaha R-N500

Written By Rich, New York on Thursday, June 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I almost never bother writing reviews of products. However, this Yamaha receiver is really exceptional so it seemed worthwhile. After hunting for a receiver for almost a year I finally found one that meets all of my needs. The networking capabilities (Pandora, Spotify, internet radio), variety of inputs (coaxial, optical, RCA, ethernet) and built-in Airplay really allows me to listen to music in so many different ways and the sound quality has exceeded my expectations. The receiver has also exposed me to the pleasures of internet radio, which is incredibly diverse and most of the stations come in crystal clear. My only nitpick is that the Yamaha app for this particular receiver could use more functions. Right now, the app essentially just allows you to change the input source, control the internet radio station and turn the unit on and off. The app does not allow you to change the volume or tone controls, nor does it allow you to change the A or B speakers. Hoping these features. will be added to future releases of the app. Regardless, I would highly recommend this receiver to anyone.
Pros:
Sound quality, variety of inputs, internet radio, Airplay capability

Perfect mix of old and new

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I absolutely love this receiver. The digital inputs and streaming of pandora and spodify are rare features for a stereo receiver / integrated amp. Sounds to me to be on the neutral side and sound quality is everything I could have wished for. Go to the spodify site for better directions on connecting. Those directions were missing from yamaha and so new that the yamaha techs didn't have much experience yet. Spodify and pandora streaming are the great and user friendly and the sound quality for those is much better than I was expecting.
Pros:

Cons:
None so far

Yamaha R-N500

Written By Kevin, Long Island, NY on Friday, April 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I initially contacted Crutchfield to replace a 25 year old Kenwood 65 watt receiver. My system consists of a Technics SL-D2 turntable and Cannon TLS model 1032 speakers. The original recommendation was for the Onkyo TX-8050 but I wasn't pleased with the bass response from my speakers compared to the old Kenwood. I then spoke with Chance-what a great adviser. He listened to my concerns and recommended the Yamaha R-N500 to fit with my system. He then arranged a smooth and simple return of the Onkyo. This Yamaha receiver is perfect!! Speakers never sounded so good when I play my vinyl records, internet radio, and USB connection for my iPod. I have many audiophile records and this receiver has extended the crisp range of my speakers. Extremely happy with the Yamaha R-N500 receiver.
Pros:
Simple set-up. Powerful, improved the response of my speakers. Easy to use.
Cons:
none

Yamaha R N500

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got it today with the wireless connector. Loving it so far. It replaces a 12-13 year old Yamaha RX-777 receiver whose base channel blew. The wifi connection is a bit spotty, but otherwise this is tons of fun. I've got Pandora running (haven't heard an add in the last 8 hours), I've tried internet radio and Airplay and all work well (see caveat about connection above). Love being able to run it from my iPhone and iPad. I was worried about going from 100 to 80 wpc, but the Paradigm Monitor 11s sound better than before. Thanks Ziggy, you done me good! Love Crutchfield's service.
Pros:
Wifi Great sound Tons of fun

The Yamaha R-N500 is a incredible piece of equipment. The set up was easy. We use the A speakers for our Game room and the B speakers for outside deck area. It is so great to be able to play great sounding music in either or both locations while controlling what we are listening too and the volume with a smart phone. If you love music, you will love this receiver.
Pros:
outstanding sound quality, ease of set up, lots of inputs,

Perfect Upgrade

Written By D Lopez, Tega Cay, SC on Friday, March 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this receiver! The sound quality and specs were delivered as expected once I turned it on. I bought this receiver to simply replace a very old (15 year) audio receiver. The network capability on this receiver is most impressive. Being able to control everything via my android smartphone and ipad is outstanding. I love when a new product comes out that allows it function with your existing common devices. I use Pandora and also stream music off my ipad primarily. Both work very well with my home network and this new receiver. I drive all my wired home speakers with this receiver. There are also plenty of source inputs on this receiver which is great for any future source expansions I may have. I feel this receiver has brought me up to date with audio listening as my kids were very impressed on the ability to control everything from their smartphones too.
Pros:
Yamaha Network Player App for phone and ipad works excellent! Sound quality of receiver is excellent. Easy to set up with home network.
Cons:
Honestly no cons.

Some what satified

Written By Wayne, orange Co. Ca. on Wednesday, March 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted digital media. I needed 2 channel. I wanted to use this receiver as a whole house unit. I have 2 speakers in most rooms of my home, with a speaker network. The sound quality is very good. The Documentation is rough. I believe this is one of those situations, where the manual is written in a different language, and translated into english? It also just could be that the author's native language isn't english? I figured most of the stuff out easier without the manual. I personally am technology capable so I didn't have any issues. However I can see the average lay person struggling with the manual. The knobs/controls are a little flimsy feeling, (cheap Plastic) but work just fine. All in all a good purchase. Bottom line, I would recommend to a friend.
Pros:
Excellent sound, wi-fi- internet radio, pandora, usb connection, many ways to connect to digital music.
Cons:
Cheap knobs, poor written manual, when playing music from a memory stick (usb) you cannot select to play by Genre, or artist, only shuffle or in alphabetical order. Hopefully fixed with firmware update?

Great value and versatility

Written By CCustomer, Massachusetts on Thursday, February 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I'm extremely happy with this receiver. Coming from a standard (non-networked) set-up with a CD player and a turntable, I'm blown away by the many ways to get music into this box, and I've tried them all without a problem: internet radio (via vTuner - love it!), Pandora, Apple Airplay (via ethernet), USB flash drive, BlueTooth (via the optional dongle), and, most recently, a NAS drive. My primary reason for upgrading my system was to get my CDs onto a hard hard drive and be able to play them through a good stereo with a minimum amount equipment. The Yamaha R-N500 + a NAS drive (I purchased the QNAP TS-220) really fit the bill. I considered the Cambridge Audio Azur 651A Integrated Amp + Stream Magic 6 combo, but the Yamaha was less than half the price, and a better choice for my first step into networked audio. The remote is perfectly usable, but I use an Android device with Yamaha's NP app as a control point. This allows you to use your tablet or smartphone as a remote to change inputs, and also to turn the receiver on/off and change the volume, a very convenient set of features all on one screen (my only wish is that the this app had a way to toggle the A and B speaker pairs, as I have these in different rooms). Sound quality is just fine by my standards, no different than the Yamaha RX-777 it replaced through my Paradigm Monitor bookshelf and Reference floor speakers.
Pros:
The many ways to get digital music into this receiver all work flawlessly for me. The Yamaha R-N500 + Yamaha NP app + a NAS drive is a great way to preserve and play your CD collection with minimal equipment.
Cons:
Does NOT support gapless playback. I'm hoping this can and will be fixed by a future firmware upgrade. Note: the Yamaha CD-N500 does support gapless playback (according to it's user manual). The CA Stream Magic 6 also supports it. Also, I do notice that I get much higher on the volume control than I did with my old Yamaha RX-777. Not an issue for me, but if your driving big speakers in a big room at high volume, this might be something for you to consider.

Yamaha R-N500

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent power! I'm powering 16 speakers. (12) 250w 8" inside and (4) 250w outside through an 8 way switch. Pandora does not work! Loads and crashes every time. iTunes and yamaha remote app are awesome! Networking is great. Play a movie on ur iPad and listen to it through the receiver with airplay. The whole reason I bought the unit. U can turn the receiver on with the app and then use the apple "remote" app to control your iTunes. Disappointed no Sirius. Hooked up the yamaha 10" powered sub with one wire. Pure direct button is useless. Doesn't sound right and makes the display disappear. Treble and bass could do more. Great receiver just wish there was more functions for the price.

Perfect for what I needed, phono connection and connectivity with Apple products. Plenty of power, and the set up was simple. I did have to contact Crutchfield as one of the diagrams was not correct for hooking up Line 1 & 2. I haven't tried Pandora yet, but looking forward to listening to Pandora.

Excellent quality, easy set up.

Great Sound

Written By Brian N., Atlanta, GA on Friday, January 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are using this receiver to streaming Pandora One and some radio stations using vtuner. The connection speed is fast and the sound quality is outstanding even while powering 8 in-wall/ceiling speakers. Set-up was easy. Have not tried accessing music stored on other devices in the house.
Pros:
Sound quality, ease of set-up, and fast connection to internet thru wired home network (we did not need the wifi adaptor). Thanks to Zac in sales for recommending this receiver.
Cons:
Even though the receiver is designed to work with Pandora there is not a quick way to thumbs or down a song using the remote control - it takes 3 or 4 button clicks. The other small con is we have not yet found a way to sync to Pandora once the receiver is on other than by turning the receiver off and back on. This only matters when we add a station via a PC. Can't comment on the apps because we use Windows phones.

Yamaha N500

I am very happy with this receiver. Yamaha finally developed a stereo receiver with 2 digital optical inputs. I am using them for cableTV and blue ray player inputs. The networking feature is also a great feature. I can listen to Pandora directly through the receiver.
Pros:
Optical inputs; network connectivity, loudness control
Cons:
Have not figured out how to adjust the crossover frequency for the subwoofer out port. Remote could stand a re-design- too cluttered and large.

Yamaha RN 500 Stereo Receiver

Written By RandyW, Memphis, TN on Wednesday, January 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

just purchased for a home stereo (music only). Mated to Polk Audio RTi A5. Also purchased the optional Yamaha wireless adapter (YWA-10) - highly recommend. I was originally looking for a high quality mini system that could play music from my iPad. I decided to move up to this setup and now happy for doing so. Sounds great - sans subwoofer. I was worried that the bass would not be enough after some of the reviews. For music I am satisfied with the bass that is produced (although I do have the bass cranked up). The wireless adapter works great with Air Play and my iPad. I gave 4 stars (vs 5) as this is an initial review only after a day of experience. Happy with the purchase!
Pros:
Great Sound Optional wifi adapter and Air Play along with your iPhone or IPad work great together Has enough power to produce enough bass with just tower speakers (sans subwoofer)
Cons:

Is it possible to play ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) files from a NAS via the wired network connection (not using AirPlay)? Thanks! [ Renzo  Aug 14, 2014 ]

  • This would be one for more of a tech guru than myself or a direct question to Yamaha. I can say that for my "stereo, A, B Channel" set up I am extremely pleased with the receiver and it is much better than the Onkyo Receiver I replaced with this (although this was in a higher price category so that may not be a good direct comparison). I don't have any apple products and use mine with a phonograph and SACD player. [ JOHN W   Aug 18, 2014 ]
  • Sorry. I do not know [ KEVIN   Aug 15, 2014 ]

  • Thanks Eric, Ordered this today so I'll try and find a workaround this weekend. [ daniel   Apr 17, 2014 ]
  • I don't think so, currently it supports internet radio via something called vtuner which provides access to a large number of radio stations. There is no current capability to enter arbitrary urls for streams though the on-line information mumbles something about this to be available in the future via a firmware upgrade. I believe that there is a firmware upgrade coming that will provide spotify access but i don't know if it will support anything else. [ STEPHEN   Apr 16, 2014 ]
  • At present this unit can not directly stream music from TuneIn Radio (like it can with Pandora). But if you have an iPhone or other Apple iDevice, you can losslessly stream music from the TuneIn app on your iDevice to the unit using AirPlay. [ ERIC   Apr 16, 2014 ]
  • Ok If anyone's interested, I found in the manual that if you bookmark a radio station on your computer, you can access that station. I listen to a local HD2 commercial free station in my car. Now I can listen at home without the need for an HD radio tuner. Sweet... [ daniel   Apr 16, 2014 ]
I'm wanting to output my TV OTA audio to the receiver before outputting to speakers. Can this receiver handle receiving a a dolby signal and then output it to a 2.1 configuration? [ Jeff  Feb 15, 2014 ]

  • OTA meaning Over The Air digital broadcast TV receiver. I found that the R-N500 can only handle 2 channel stereo PCM on the digitial inputs - coax or optical. If you are connecting your OTA box through one of the analog RCA line inputs, then it will work perfectly. None of my OTA boxes have digital outputs. [ Scott   Aug 07, 2014 ]
  • I haven't connect the receiver to a TV as yet , currently I'm using only using the audio setting for music purpose, I will be forthcoming with more info as soon as I have something to report. [ ALLIE   Feb 16, 2014 ]

  • I've only got two speakers and just realized that one is blown, so I don't know yet. Sorry! [ ARTHUR H   Jan 01, 2014 ]
  • Frank, The receiver is great, but no room designation for volume control. Speakers zone 1 & 2 are either on or off, or both on but the zones are controllable via uhf remote. If you like hi-tech at a reasonable price, this is a fabulous receiver, and the phono quality is fantastic without the additional pre-amp. [ JOHN D   Jan 01, 2014 ]
  • No, the volume control affects both sets of speakers simultaneously, not individually. [ JAMES P   Jan 01, 2014 ]
