The receiver features Yamaha's flexible MusicCast multi-room system, so you can enjoy all of those music sources in other rooms. That includes Bluetooth streams or components connected to the receiver's analog inputs. Just add compatible speakers and components to the other areas of your home where you want to hear your music. High-res audio

Satisfying sound and nice retro touches

I heard the R-N602 in our training room here at Crutchfield HQ, which is quite a large space to fill. The receiver's 80-watt-per-channel stereo amplifier delivered clear, punchy sound when driving a pair of Klipsch RB-61 II bookshelf speakers. The music was rich, detailed, and immediately inviting, even when we listened to low-res Internet radio streamed over Bluetooth from our smartphones. And that was with minimal tweaking to our setup, with all the receiver's controls set to flat. If you're the kind of listener who likes old-school tone controls, the R-N602 has convenient front-panel rotary knobs for bass, treble, balance, and even an adjustable loudness control — an attractive combination of retro and futuristic features.

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance. With 80 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.04% THD), the R-N602 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A & B speakers at the same time.

BurrBrown 192kHz/24-Bit DAC: The Yamaha R-N602 uses a high-performance BurrBrown 192kHz/24-bit DAC for high resolution audio playback.

Audio Settings: The R-N602 network receiver offers a variety of audio adjustments to customize the sound of your music.

  • Tone Control: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (20Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -10dB to +10dB in 0.5 dB increments. You can also balance your connected speakers left to right.
  • Loudness Control: The R-N602 also features a dedicated loudness control on the front-panel, which lets you adjust the loudness effect as desired. Separate from the overall volume, this controls the balance of the low and high frequency sounds, providing full tonal range at any volume level, compensating for the natural loss in the human ear of high and low frequencies at soft levels.
  • Pure Direct: Engaging the Pure Direct switch causes the audio signal to bypass the control circuits for bass and treble, balance and the back buffer amp. This improves sound quality while maintaining full output capacity. Shortening the signal route improves sound purity, helping to reproduce even the most delicate musical nuances.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha R-N602 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

  • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
  • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
  • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Analog + Digital Inputs: The Yamaha R-N602 offers both analog and digital audio inputs in order to connect a variety of source components.

  • Analog w/ Phono (MM): The Yamaha network receiver features five analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to five audio components, and two stereo RCA record outputs to connect to a CD-recorder and other recording device. Included in the five analog inputs is a Phono input (MM) for vinyl playback.
  • Optical/Coax Digital: The R-N602 is equipped for digital audio input, with both optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) terminals. The two optical inputs are for receiving audio from a TV and Satellite/Cable box, while the two coaxial inputs are used for receiving audio from a Blu-ray Disc player and CD player. The audio stays in the digital domain, giving you pure, pristine dynamic sound for all your entertainment sources, from sports and other programs to movies and concerts. The optical & coaxial digital inputs will only support 2ch PCM (not compatible with Dolby Digital/DTS).

A & B Speaker Terminals: The R-N602 is fitted with A & B speaker terminals so you can power up to two pair of speakers. The speaker selector switch on the front-panel of the receiver makes it easy to switch between speaker outputs, allowing you to hear the sound from one speaker pair (A or B) or from both speaker pairs (A+B). In addition, compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A & B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel). The eight binding-post speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only). You can select 8 ohms or 4 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application.

Subwoofer Output: The network stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub.

Headphone Jack: The Yamaha R-N602 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

Alexa Compatible (Firmware Update Required): Alexa-enabled devices (including the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap and Echo Show) will soon be able to control key functions of a MusicCast system using voice commands. A firmware update (available sometime in October), will be available for download that allows key functions of MusicCast products to be controlled using your voice through Alexa-enabled devices (sold separately).

  • Alexa Skill: The MusicCast skill for Alexa will allow you to power MusicCast products on and off, control basic playback functions, make selections from a playlist of favorite music, adjust the volume, and use the Link function for playback of multiple MusicCast products simultaneously.
  • Echo Source Input: In addition or alternatively, an Echo device can be used as a music/audio source for a MusicCast system. All MusicCast devices offer a Bluetooth input. Just pair your Echo, Echo Dot or Echo Show with any MusicCast wireless speaker, sound bar or stereo receiver and the sound will play from the MusicCast device. Using the MusicCast app, you can then select the Bluetooth input and link multiple MusicCast devices for playback, allowing you to hear it throughout your home. Many MusicCast products also offer inputs which can be connected to Echo Dot via its line output, if a wired connection is preferred over Bluetooth. This requires using an optional analog audio cable (sold separately). Using the MusicCast app, you can select the wired input and link multiple MusicCast devices for playback, allowing you to hear sound from Echo Dot throughout your home.
Note: You will need an Alexa-enabled device (Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Tap, or Echo Show - all sold separately) to operate certain functions of your MusicCast products via voice-command. The MusicCast components and the Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same network.
Convenience Features

Front-Panel Display: The R-N602 network receiver features a front-panel display to indicate audio settings, source input, station identification, and song/artist information. You can adjust the brightness of the front-panel display. This unit does not offer an on-screen display.

IR Remote: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the network stereo receiver, network audio, and connected Yamaha components.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.

  • Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
  • Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Will this receiver handle 2 pairs of 8 ohm Klipsch speakers? Thank you.

It's never wise to run 2 sets of 8ohm simutainiously on a output 8ohm receiver .. Although it'll be fine under low load, but when you CRANK IT UP!..you run the chance of power overload and blowing up the receiver..To prevent this issue I purchased (2) 150 watt amps.1 for each channel to prevent that from happening and have all the power I need to blast it on my 4 8ohm Yamaha speakers. Only issue I have is neighbor complaints...lol
arthur  Dec 21, 2021

It should, the A speakers are 8ohm rated and my 2nd pair of speakers are 8 ohm as well. Love this receiver by the way, very clean and easy to use, great performance as well.

Bought my N602 several months ago and immediately wired it to a pair of 4 ohm Canton towers. Worked just fine. N602 doesn't even get very warm doing this. N602 also seems above average at holding onto so-so connections (our internet vendor's service is B quality sometimes).

Q
I want to know if I can add this as a 2nd receiver on the MusicCast app? I know the App supports multiple speakers ("devices") - but it is not clear if I can have two receivers on the same app (I have N803 now) . I want to set up separate system in my office independent of my other receiver and control bith systems from one phone. The Yamaha FAQ page is not clear about this functionality.
matt  Dec 22, 2020
2 answers
A
The receivers show up as "rooms" instead of "devices" in the MusicCast app. I have an N602 in one room and an N803 in another room. Both show up in the app on my iPhone. You can assign each receiver a name such as "Office" and "Living Room" so they can be distinguished from each other. When the app starts up the rooms are displayed and you tap the room you want to control.
eugene  Dec 23, 2020

Q
Hi all - I'm comparing this unit with the Yamaha RS202, and I'm wondering whether, in terms of sound quality, this unit is worth the $400 or so difference in price. I see that the RN602 has many more features for wireless sources, but if that really isn't important to me, is it worth buying the RN602 over the RS202? I'm definitely willing to pay more if the sound is better.
michael  Jan 03, 2020
2 answers
A
Yes the R-N602 will easily be superior to the R-S202 in sound quality and performance. It has a high current amplifier capable of driving 4 speakers at once (R-S202 can only do A or B) as well as a much nicer Burr Brown digital to analog converter. Even if you never use the added networking features they sound will be much, much better.

I wanted a receiver that would accommodate my four JBL HLS620 speakers and when I play music sound like a live band and when I watch a movie sound like I'm in the theater. The RN602 does all three. The sound quality is amazing!

Q
Hi Crutchfield, If you had the Yamaha RN-602 stereo receiver in silver, with specs for the U.S. market, I would buy it in a heart-beat. Yamaha makes this product in black and silver. Why the h--- is it only available in black in the U.S? Du-uhh! George
george  Sep 24, 2019

I know Yamaha doesn't make a silver version of the U.S. model but as to why, I can only guess that it has to do with the demand and that they have deemed it not feasible to offer the silver color here. I wish I had different news for you there.

Q
What is the total wattage across all channels playing simultaneously? I am planning to install three in the ceiling stereo speakers (L and R playing at each speaker) down a long hallway connected in parallel. The speakers rated 15-50 W at 8 ohms. Does the R-N602 have enough power?
nicholas  Aug 27, 2019
1 answer
A
Hi Nick, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the Yamaha R-N602 receiver will not be the best way to provide power to your 3 speakers. Wiring those 3, 8ohm speakers in parallel will produce a 2.6 ohm load, that the Yamaha could not handle. I recommend getting in touch with an Advisor to go over your options for powering your 3 stereo speakers. You can chat with someone online, or by phone at 1-800-324-9695.

What's the sound quality, particularly when playing vinyl recordings?

I listen mostly to CDs and Spotify, both of which have excellent sound quality. I occasionally listen to vinyl records, on an Onkyo turntable, and the sound quality here too is excellent. But I do not listen to vinyl on a regular basis. Overall, I would highly recommend this unit. I have been very happy with it.

I found the sound quality to be outstanding...best amp I've owned. Haven't played vinyl through it yet. I use it primarily to play CD's, TV, and for the Airplay feature for my digital music library and radio streaming. I run it through two Elac B6 speakers.

I've been thrilled with this unit - that's saying something as I'm in the touring arena concert business. Can't speak to how it sounds with vinyl, but every other format has sounded great on it. I use Bose cabinets (got it because it could drive those - ohm rating) and a Yamaha sub in a bedroom. Love the sound and love the operation - has a great "feel" in terms of user interface. I was wary, but really have been very happy.

I have no vinyl experience with this device. True audiophile with vinyl would buy at a higher price point amplifier in my opinion.

I use an Samsung android tablet and have many albums plus other misc songs on it. Will I be able to use an 3.5 mm cable and be able to pick albums or songs from my tablet? Yes to all the above. 3.5mm to rca cable would work. It has built in bluetooth so that would work also. The usb port on the front of the stereo is for plugging a thumb drive in & playing it off that. I haven't used that feature on mine but that's what I understood it to be for.

Bluetooth works great - I use it frequently from iPhone. USB port on front for playing MP3 files. No 3.5mm input, but I suppose you could run a 3.5mm-RCA converter cable to tape/CD/Aux inputs in back.

Q
Can this unit handle (2) 4ohm Martin Logan bookshelf speakers and a powered subwoofer?
charles  Aug 06, 2018
2 answers
A
I do not have experience with that exact speaker, but I expect that it should be able to do so. It has a separate output for the sub (which uses its own power), so that is not an issue. It easily handles two ELAC Uni-Fi UF5 speakers. Note one quirk that comes up if you have two sets of speakers - you can set the speaker impedance to 4 or 8 ohms, but that setting applies to both sets of speakers (e.g. another room etc.).
thomas  Aug 07, 2018

Q
Can you hook a pair of 4 ohm midbasss on speaker B input while a pair of Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-160M are hooked on speaker A input?
edgar  Nov 20, 2017
1 answer
A
While you can connect both pairs, you cannot power them both (A + B) at the same time. For that, both pairs would have to be a minimum 8 Ohm impedance. So, you can connect both pairs but would need to be sure you do not activate both at the same time as the receiver will likely shut down when presented with the improper impedance.

Q
Can the R-N602 play wired (A or B zone) and wireless speakers simultaneously?
daniel  Jun 12, 2017
2 answers
A
Wired and wireless should be out of sound range of each other, because they're not in synch. There's a slight delay on the wireless, and it's a big one--a second or more--if you have the buffer set to max: "stability boost". One exception is internet streaming, where they do stay in synch.
maarten  Jul 14, 2017

Yes. We play two sets of speakers (A) in the kitchen and dining room, and our other set of speakers (B), in the living room, at the same time. We had the speaker wires laid under the boards when we put in a new floor. John K.

Q
Any comments on the user-friendliness of the MusicCast app when it comes to browsing, searching, and selecting albums or songs to play from a server? I have a headless server with more than 3,500 tracks. Most of these are 16bit/44.1kHz FLAC, with some higher-resolution and even fewer DSD files. I am used to the iPeng (for Squeezebox) app, and the BluOS (for Bluesound) app. Both of these apps feature very slick and friendly interfaces. Searching for albums, artists, songs, etc. is very easy. Selecting music to play, queuing songs up, etc. are all easily accomplished. With MusicCast, I would expect at least that level of sophistication. Any insights are most appreciated. Thank you.
ashok  Sep 21, 2016

A
The MusicCast App from Yamaha is a very user-friendly design that easily allows you to access the music files stored from an external network server. Once you've selected "Server" from the source menu in the app, your music will be sorted by artist, album, playlist or song. You can also store individual artist(s), album(s), playlist(s) or song(s) as "Favorites" for quick recall within the MusicCast app's main menu. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Yes You can but you will have no volume control from the Yahama. All you have is line out for recording.. Not a line out to drive a power amp.. if your power amps has enough watts it might work. I wouldn't recommend it.. Find a good preamp like a parasound or something to work with your power amp.....
william  May 31, 2016

Well the speakers that are normally used for this tuner should be non powered/ passive speakers that only use the speaker wire from the tuner to the speaker. However, if you are using wireless speakers then that wireless speaker would have it's on stand alone power supply (wall or battery). Not sure if this is what you are asking so if not clear, ask another question and we'll try to hone it down for you.

william  Feb 08, 2016

When I first set up the RN602 (I use a Mac running iTunes), it was able to play my music library over Apple's Airplay without needing to use MusicCast. I then activated MusicCase just to see what that would do, and now when I try to select the RN602, it shows up through MusicCast rather than through Airplay, but still works exactly the same. So, I would think that both would work for you if you were using a PC rather than Mac.
daniel  Feb 08, 2016
A
I'm away from my owners manual so not sure. I have a Mac, so assume you mean Microsoft. The RN602 is very Apple friendly however. You can link via Airplay and bluetooth for input so if your PC is BT ready, then that's an option. The wi fi/ hardwired network connection is primarily to access internet based stations including some TV station audio feeds. I have not used Music Cast yet since it's only app driven and not sure if it works on a Mac, but only a smart device to control /use wi fi based speakers and other devices.
albert  Feb 08, 2016
A
If you connect a computer (I have a Mac) either through the wireless (with airplay in my case) or through bluetooth, you can play through whatever music player you have on your computer. We have the musiccast app set up on a tablet to play music from a connected hard drive. Changing between the two is a matter of changing the input from "server" to "bluetooth" or "airplay," which can be done easily. (One note, though - using airplay, there is some lag between the computer and the Rn602, making it not work with videos, but then, this isn't a video amplifier.)
