Features

100 Watt x 2 Channel Amplifier: The Yamaha R-S201 stereo receiver employs a 100-watt x 2-channel (40-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.2% THD) high-drive amplifier with a high sound quality design that minimizes the length of signal routes and optimizes the circuit layout. Yamaha positioned the power transformer near the power amp circuit to reduce power loss, while improving peak power supply capacity to enable high volume output. The signal ground and power supply ground are connected at one point, eliminating mutual interference to achieve a higher S/N ratio. The result is sound filled with clarity and a feeling of openness.

Analog Inputs/Output: The Yamaha R-S201 features four analog stereo RCA inputs to connect up to four audio components, and a single stereo RCA record output to connect to a CD-recorder or other recording device.

AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha R-S201 stereo receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The R-S201 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. Auto preset lets you automatically search for and register FM stations that can be received in your area. An indoor FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included with the receiver.

A & B Speaker Terminals: The R-S201 is fitted with A & B speaker terminals so you can power up to two pair of speakers. The speaker selector switch on the front-panel of the receiver makes it easy to switch between speaker outputs, allowing you to hear the sound from one speaker pair (A or B) or from both speaker pairs (A+B). In addition, compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A & B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel). The eight spring-clip speaker terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG) and  pin-connectors.

Speaker Connection Speaker Impedance
Speakers A or B 8-ohm or higher
Speakers A and B 16-ohm or higher
Bi-wiring 8-ohm  or higher

Headphone Jack: The stereo receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Tone Control: The Yamaha R-S201 offers Bass, Treble, and Balance adjustment. Bass & Treble can be adjusted independently from -10dB to + 10dB. Balance can be set between Left+10 and Right+10.

Max/Initial Volume: You can set the maximum volume level of the receiver so that its volume will not be accidentally increased above a certain level (01-99, Max). Use the Initial Volume feature to specify the volume level when the receiver's power is turned on. You can select 01-99, Max, Mute, or Off. When "Off" is selected, the volume level used when the receiver was turned off will be applied.

IR Remote: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the stereo receiver and a connected Yamaha CD receiver.

Sleep Timer: Use the Sleep timer to automatically set this unit to standby mode after a certain amount of time (30/60/90/120 mins). The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while listening to the receiver.

Power Management: A power management function automatically cuts off the power (switches to standby mode) when the receiver has not been operated for a long time. It can be set to two, four, eight or 12 hours, or off. In addition, power consumption during standby is only 0.5 W, achieving good energy saving performance.

Q
can i add a phonograph on this receiver?
jeff  Apr 01, 2016

A
Doesn't have phono input. Does have 2 other inputs.
michael  Apr 09, 2016

Here is what the manual says about the jacks and cables that go into the back of the unit: Line 1 - 2 jacks Used to connect audio components. Audio Out: DVD player, etc. Audio Out: CD recorder, etc. Audio Out: Tape deck, etc. I have connected my CD player using the CD Player jack. I do not know if your phonograph has a cable that can fit into a jack. Good luck!
judy  Apr 04, 2016
A
This receiver does not have an input to directly connect a phonograph. You can use a phono preamp with any of the RCA inputs on this receiver to connect a phonograph. Here are the phono preamps we offer: http://www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc000/g_50500/Phono-Preamps.html?tp=204 I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101

Q
Can i only run one pair of speakers one speaker on Channel B and One speaker on Channel A? And will i get 100W Pre speaker?
dom  Mar 10, 2016
4 answers
A
No you can run only one channel at a time channel B is for another set of speakers in another room you still get 100 W per speaker on A or on B but not at the same time . That is the way I have understood it to work, hope this helps.
john  Mar 14, 2016
A
Hi, There are connections for 2 speakers each channel. 4 total. I believe it is 25 watts per speaker. More than enough for the living room. In put from 3 sources. It has been a great intro amp for me.
nels  Mar 13, 2016
A
I am not sure. The guys should be able to tell you. I have only one set of speakers set up to A &B. Get a look at the back of the receiver & it should help you to see if you can do what you want. Although this is an ok receiver there was another I was looking at more powerful. Since this was going in an area where I didn't need more than one pair sound is good. I have older Pinnacle speakers attached. Hope this helps. AS

Q
why the dickens did Yamaha not include some digital inputs on this receiver? I'm using one of my old PC's as an audio server feeding FLAC to my current Yamaha with an optical digital cable. I'm not the only one doing this either.
robert w  Mar 14, 2015

A
This is an entry level analog stereo unit. It has no digital inputs because the additional circuity would drive up the cost of manufacturing. Please look at modern multi-channel surround sound receivers to replace your current Yamaha when connecting directly from your PC digitally.

WTH! Spend some bucks for what U need. The unit is mega for the bucks!!
jerome h.  Mar 16, 2015

I have no idea. Probably because the Yamaha was designed before all of the modern stuff was developed.

Q
Is there an input to connect a turntable or do you have to have a preamp?
pvic1  Nov 21, 2014
4 answers
A
Sorry James, A turntable requires a phono preamp to boost the audio up to the proper level and also equalize the turntable audio to the RIAA curve. Since this receiver only has line level inputs you will need an external phono preamp or a turntable with a built-in preamp.
john  Feb 18, 2015
A
No, a pre-amp is not needed for any input (cd player, iPod, etc.).
james  Nov 30, 2014
A
Hey man, there are 4 inuts . One is labeled CD, the other three are labeled 1, 2, and 3. It is also a tuner. Pretty clean sound . I do not have a turntable hooked up but do not see why you couldn't. Can't remember if you have to hook up a ground or not but sound easy . Best wishes
travis  Nov 22, 2014
A
There are 4 inputs, but none are specific for Phono. You will likely need to buy a phono box to convert the signal for a turntable. Crutchfield sells the pro-ject phono box for around $100

Q
is it american model? I want one which can work on 240v supply. Thanks.
james  Oct 30, 2014
2 answers
A
Only the "general" model has a switchable power supply. You will need to check with your dealer to see if it is available in your area. The Yamaha receivers are made in Maylasia. In the US, the American model is made for this area. You can purchase a 240v to 125v adaptor. Hope this helps!
john  Nov 04, 2014
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This is the North American model that would use a 120v supply. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

I'd like to know why I have to turn the volume up to over "60" and I still get a muffled sound like the speakers are under a couple of pillows - and I'm using decent Yamaha speakers. The Crutchfield tech people told me it is just the way the receiver is made these days. It's sitting in the box after trying to get it set up. What a piece of junk.

Q
Can I connect my cable box (ATT U-Verse) to this receiver to play cable's music on demand? Thanks in advance! Best, Mike
mike  Jun 02, 2014
4 answers
A
Mike, my guess is no. The R-S201 is a great receiver for the money, but money is the key word. You get what you pay for. This unit has only RCA jacks for inputs/outputs such as AUX, CD, TAPE, etc. I'm not familiar with ATT U-Verse, but may require something similar to a USB or HDMI type connection like your newer flat screens for an output/input connection. If it has RCA outputs your good. My suggestion is if you are wanting to use your receiver to interconnect with your other newer hi-tech equipment, go ahead and spend the bucks for a more hi-tech receiver or you will be limited to what you can easily do. Hope this helps.
hoyt  Jun 06, 2014
A
I don't' know the answer. It's a basic receiver and I use it for audio only.
craig  Jun 03, 2014
A
No. This stereo(2 Outputs) only have rca inputs, you need a stereo that have a decoder for internet normally are marketet as pandora ready.sony, pioneer have some very inexpensive ones for $200 or $300 but they are not very powerfull in watts
alan  Jun 03, 2014
A
Sure, if your cable box has RCA jacks to feed stereo, you can feed to one of the three inputs on the R-S201. I feed my cable audio and my Grace Wi/Fi internet radio to the Yamaha also. No problem, and it sounds great.

Can I hook this receiver to my speakers w/c is 105w@6ohms?

This receiver is recommended for 8-ohm or higher speakers. If your speakers are 6-ohm I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine which receivers will work and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
Can this amp be used with the Polk in wall n ceiling pairs... which are 8 ohms.....so 1 pair of 8 ohms one channel A...n 1 pair - 8 ohms on channel B.....both at same time ?
ryan  Jan 13, 2014
3 answers
A
Hi Ryan, I'm sorry, but the manual specifically warns against using two pairs of 8 ohm speakers at the same time even if one pair is on A and the other pair is on B. BUT... there does seem to be some confusion in the manual which also says "this does not apply to the USA" So perhaps it's OK if the speakers are small, such as ceiling speakers. Frankly, I would contact Yamaha customer service and ask them. If you are concerned about running power into 4 ohm loads, a better choice might be the R-S300 receiver which does have a 4 ohm setting and can easily handle the load you mention. Hope this helps. John
john  Jan 14, 2014

Yes. There are 2 channels and two speakers per channel for a total of 4 speakers, all at 8 ohm impedance.

I have a I-pod shuffle. I use a 3.5 mm / RCA cable to connect to the Yamaha R-S201 receiver using your output connection for your headphones. Great choice, a very good sounding receiver. The cable I use is a Belkin Y Audio Cable P97095. I hope this helps.
timothy  Jan 11, 2014
A
I don't believe so. There are no inputs for MP3 player format., only basic inputs on the back of the unit for a CD player and three standard inputs for other devices using a standard RCA plugs. Perhaps if you have a CD player that has in input for your iphone connector. Yyou can play it from the CD player to the Yamaha receiver. I had looked at other receivers and there are more complex units that have a front mounted input for iphone's. This unit is not for people that are looking for playing more modern electronics or HD TV's with surround sound.
frank  Dec 13, 2013
A
Sorry, but I do not possess an iphone . The first chance I get I will ask a friend to connect his phone to my Yahama Receiver to check this out, but however, So far my receiver works great in all phases!!!, ---Floyd E.---

John, I don't really know, but I think any device will connect using 'Line in'. The techs at Crutchfield should know for sure. The Yamaha R-S201 is a nice unit. Good Luck,

if you have a dual RCA > mini plug adapter - you can. Just did it today. There is not a docking point - or a straight mini plug point. great receiver for the price!
jeff  Dec 12, 2013

I did it with a cable. The phone output is a little low, but it sounds pretty good. I would consider a blue tooth adapter that would make it wireless. I think some of them let you control volume as well. Good luck
