Top notch 2 channel receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Yamaha receiver lives up to it"s good reviews. It was easy to set up and delivers great sound and it has enough power to drive most speakers. Lots of inputs is a plus and it is a great basis for a high quality stereo system. This receiver preforms well with all types of music. Great product Yamaha. PS great service from Crutchfield.

Pros: Very easy to set up and easy to use.

Cons: Would like the power cord to be removeable

A superb basic unit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This new Yamaha stereo receiver is just perfect for my needs. I was able to hook up my old phonograph and cd changer without any trouble at all. On top of that, I attached a Sony bluetooth transmitter through the headphone jack and now play all my music through it wirelessly to my BOSE speaker. A full rich sound for my small writing studio. (And the gents at the free tech service were great too.)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very satisfied with this receiver. It is easy to set up and use, and it was what I expected from Yamaha. Not a lot fancy stuff, but I didn't want that.

Pros: Ease of use. Sound is very good.

Cons: Nothing that I can think of.

Receiver Hi-Fi Stereo Sound

Written By Billy, Missouri on Friday, June 19, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The best stereo receiver I have ever owned. Sound is HiFi and has a phono input for turntable.

Pros: High Quality, great sound ,

Cons: Hard to set up volume levels for each input before you can get good bass and high volume from receiver, after that this receiver can play loud has you need it.

Couldn't repair a Luxman

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Luxman R115 failed after many years of use. Couldn't get replacement parts so needed a stereo receiver. This one works well and has a very clean sound, probably better than the Luxman it replaced.

Pros: Isn't a surround sound receiver, but a stereo. Has knobs instead of of just a remote so feels like the receiver it replaced.

Cons: Bass isn't as strong as I would like

Great Receiver

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver, clean sound. I wanted the ohm selector (4 ohm / 8 ohm) to power my Polk Lsi9 4 ohm speakers and a subwoofer output. So far I have been pleased. I purchased an open box model. I would recommend doing it if you want to save some money.

Pros: Ohm selector, phono input, subwoofer input, Good clean sound, easy to operate and set up.

Cons: No power supplies for other components

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this receiver for about 2 months now, and absolutely love it. Have it connected to a pair of Bose 301's and a ProTech turntable, all purchased from Crutchfield. The sound quality this received pumps out is exceptional. Very well made and has high-end appearance - for the price, can't beat it.

Pros: High-end appearance; sound quality exceptional, well made. Easy to set-up.

Cons: Nne

Excellent receiver for music.

Written By PizzaIsGood1984, North Carolina on Sunday, January 04, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a receiver to replace my 1993-era Yamaha receiver. I stumbled upon this receiver at the last minute. The list of what I wanted was clear, extremely high-quality sound, more wattage, low distortion, reliability. I have my computer line-out into this receiver, so I didn't need networking capability.

In short, this product delivers, and then some. The sound quality is extremely natural sounding, but extremely clear. The bass and treble pots also don't give you as much wiggle room in their respective ranges as you'd think, but it's all very musical sounding. This is really to say, it's hard to make your music sound bad.

Some reviewers have commented that the amp isn't as loud as comparable amplifiers, and I would say that is true, but that's not what you are looking for if you want this amp. What you are looking for is an extremely high-quality, natural sounding receiver, and that's where it differs. Everything from the construction, knobs, display, screams premium-quality. I've compared this to Marantz and Onkyo units, and the sound quality just is just the best. The loudness curve adjustment is key too, especially for listening at variable sound levels.

The only real technological gripe I have is there is no digital line-in.

I wish I could write more, but if you are looking for a high-quality music receiver, look nowhere else.

Pros: High build quality, simple, extremely high-quality, natural sound.

Cons: Not as loud as one would expect for the wattage. Lacks networking, Bluetooth, and other items that may be seen on other receivers. (Yes, Yamaha sells add-ons, but I doubt people use 30-pin iPod docks anymore). No digital line-in.

Love it

Bought this to replace a Samedung HTiB which I never used. This brings me back to my old AR receiver days. Hooked it up to a pair of Fluance speakers and a sub.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Need a flashlight to read the control labels. No HDMI or optical input.

I bought this to replace an old Yamaha and am very happy with the sound and look. Very clean design and easy to set up.

Pros: great sound, easy to set up, price, phono input, subwoofer hook up

Cons: wish it had a few plug ins on the back to run power to other components, was a bit difficult to get monster wire in the speaker hook up but it works, pure direct makes no difference and should just be left off

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good reasonably priced receiver. No frills and all of the necessary features. Performs well and is easy and intuitive to use.

Pros: Appears to be solidly constructed. Clean functional control layout. Can operate all functions without remote control.

Cons: None, given the price. It would be nice if the tone, balance and loudness controls were available on the remote. Auto-muting when there is no signal present would be a nice feature especially for those of us who use a record player.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My new Yamaha R-S500 has been a great replacement to my recently deceased receiver. Some of the features are still a mystery to me, but I'm confident that Crutchfield tech support will answer any questions I have. Power is great, features are pretty easy to use, price was reasonable.

Pros: Quality of construction, smoothness and usability of controls.

Cons: None so far, have not owned the unit very long. Not used to the binding post connectors, and they seem awkward to use at first. I use bare wire on my Monster Cables, hard to get the wire in to the connector without it spreading.

Nice product for budget minded audiophile

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver works as expected. I am very happy with having old-tec tale and phono options and plan to use these in the future. Price's in general are a lot better for equipment of this quality then they were in past years so the deciding factor was really the usability of the controls. On my previous Sony even if I could remember which tiny button did what no one else in my household could comprehend the control of functions in once the room lights were dim.

Pros: Phono and Tape in's Controls easy to use

Cons: Documentation with unit is weak regarding the use of functions and specifications.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice product, as good as I expected it to be, and more. The remote control however, tries to cram too much into to small a space. They all seem to be like this, they seem to think you are going to be able to use this one remote to operate everything. I would rather have the remote for just the receiver, larger easier to read buttons with more functions.

Pros: Great receiver, well worth it.

Cons: Lousy remote control.

Solid Budget Stereo Receiver

Written By Tom, Denver, CO on Thursday, May 08, 2014

I bought the S500 receiver to put into a living room to drive a pair of bookshelf speakers in that room and a pair outside on my patio. One thing that drew me to this receiver was the amount of physical knobs on the unit. Many other stereo receivers in this price range force you to do most of the adjusting via a remote, which for me isn't ideal for what I wanted it for.

Setup was easy and pretty much just was plugging everything in. The power from the receiver is pretty good, but don't expect too much for this price point. On the volume scale, between -20 to -30 dBs seems to be the sweet spot for driving a pair of 91dB sensitivity speakers (Def Tech AW5500).

The remote is just okay...archaic looking but gets the job done.

I'm going to connect an Apple AirPort Express unit to one of the RCA inputs this weekend so I can stream music from my iPad/iPhone to this receiver and control everything from the iPad/iPhone over AirPlay. Stereo receivers that include AirPlay built in are at least $500, so if you are wanting that feature, consider an AirPort Express or AppleTV to achieve it.

I ran my outdoor Def Tech AW5500 speakers (8ohm) and indoor PSB Image 6 (6ohm) speaker simultaneously for 6 hours and had no issues of overheating, clipping, or distortion. The receiver did run hotter than just running 1 pair, but it seems to be up to the task of both pairs.

Keeps the Yamaha Tradition

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Expected that I was purchasing a quality stereo receiver and that is what I got. I chose this specific one because it had the ability for a second amplifier since I have one that I use. Also because it still had phono inputs, which I also use. Hooked it up out of the box, setup was simple and it works as expected. Can't beat a good deal.

Pros: second amp capable, power to drive my speakers and phono input.

Cons: Have not found any real cons yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, I didn't plan to write any review. Just planned to look for a decent 2-channel tuner/receiver to listen to music which would fits my need and my wallet and be happy with it. But boy! turned out, this thing breaths a new life into our vintage Marantz HD44 Speakers. It reveals lots of amazing details never heard of with our old tuner/receiver. We listen to mostly classical, but not limited to Jazz, Pop and Rock. So, natural sounds reproduction is important. We don't like the synthesized sounds or too electronic. All music sounds great, especially classical has a very good balance, very natural just as the name "Natural Sound". It still has enough power to grow my system to a certain level in the (near) future. Crutchfield has very good reliable service, shipped out in a timely manner, arrived as promised in good shape and emailed to inform me right away as soon as the product delivered.

Pros: -Most important, it sounds great! That's what matter. -Adjustable loudness is a great invention. -Very nice design, clean simple look, goes with other equipment. -Enough out lets in the back for all your need.

Yamaha R-S500

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an old Yamaha CR-2040 receiver that I've had since 1979. One of the channels was having problems again, so I figured it was time to replace it. It was analog, had the old tuning knob technology, no pre-sets. This receiver, the Yamaha R-S500, got a lot of great reviews, and a receiver for my CD changers is all I need, so this is the one I settled on. The sound is very clean. Sounds beautiful whether I'm listening with headphones or the pair of old DCM Time Windows I still have in the living room. No buzz or background noise at all. Gives my headphones great separation, hearing instruments coming from the lower part of each headphone, & the vocals from above. Love the sound, and love having all those FM station pre-sets, too. Makes life much simpler.

Pros: Beautiful sound; easy to hook up & set up; a lot of station pre-sets; wide volume range, with crystal-clear sound at any volume level.

Cons: Not truly a con, but I've found that the Pure Direct button doesn't make any difference in sound, whether I'm using headphones or floor speakers. it's supposed to bypass the treble, etc., controls and give the true sound as it was recorded to sound like. But using it in various situations, I can't tell a difference. So I just don't bother with it.

Originally bought a refurb'd one through Amazon but it wasn't refurb'd at all and was a pain to send back. Bought an open box model through Crutchfield for not much more and having the fast delivery and service of Crutchfield is worth a little bit more money. Am very happy with this receiver. It replaced a 30 year old Sony that did not survive a move to my new house. Have a 35 y/o set of Advent speakers that sound wonderful and have set up the MP3 player. I have no need of a home theater setup in my downsized house and this fits the bill - great sound at a very affordable price.

Pros: Great sound, affordable price, as many "bells and whistles" as I need. Easy to set up.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great Receiver. I bought this unit because of the variable loudness control. It does make a difference. I use Boston VR-6 speakers for the left and right channel. And a Boston XB-4 Subwoofer. I set the loudness control to the 7 o clock position and leave the Bass and Treble set on flat. With these settings I get great sound. I also discovered I do not need to use the subwoofer. That is due to the loudness control. If you don't have good speakers the receiver can't perform properly.

Pros: Easy to use. No need to go into a menu to alter the sound. It's all up front. The remote control is simple to use and has clearly marked buttons. Also my thanks to the Crutchfield Team.

Cons: No Cons. It works as advertised with no unexpected problems.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great stereo receiver for the money. If you want basic stereo features with simple functional controls and connections, this is a great buy. I'm using it to drive an old pair of bose 501's and a second pair of 161's, the amp does just fine at higher levels. I use the zone 2 output for a pair of sennheisser 180 wireless headphones. The addition of a Sirius tuner was a definite must at the price (plus annual subscription). Plenty of input connections for just about any audio need. The FM tuner seems to do a good job of pulling in stations. I'd recommend this receiver to anyone that wants a reasonably priced way to enjoy stereo.

Pros: Sirius capable, lots of source inputs, zone 2 function, good bang for the buck.

Cons: No internet capability, if you want it. The pure direct button turns off the display - should be a function of the display dimmer.

Great product!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old JVC had some issues and i wanted just a stereo receiver instead of a surround unit because most media is broadcast in stereo, and all of the music i listen to is also, so i needed a receiver with some punch to power my mid-70's 12" 3- way speakers, the yamaha R-S500 woke up my old speakers, the JVC had more wattage and sounded pretty good, but the yamaha really sounds much better and i still have plenty if adjustability, blows the windows out! A note to Anon of Boise, there is a energy saver switch on the back of the unit, if you don't change the volume, or anything for a certain amount of time, the unit will shut off, just switch it to off, i had the same problem and thought i had switched it off while setting up, after looking at trouble shooting in the manual, i checked and thats all it was, hope that helps.

Pros: Great unit for picky household listeners.

Cons: None that i can find.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a long time audio buff having had various tube and solid state audio components since the early 70's. I have a larger main audio system with some older Magneplanars and I play LP records as well as SACDs. My current need was to find a good sounding 2 chennel receiver to power a pair of 20 year B&W speakers I recently acquired. I was very pleasantly surprised how detailed these speakers sound driven by this Yamaha receiver. The receiver features most important to me were: Yamaha's general audio reputation, the tone control bypass feature and the phono preamp. The loudness control seems to be just a second attenuator in series with the volume control with no affect on tonal balance. I would delete it. However, I am very happy with the unit and would recomment it.on the basis of providing high quality sound.

Pros: Easy to use front panel controls (can accomplish most tasks without the remote) and good FM sensativity and quieting, Good sound in general.

Cons: Volume control knob is large but is a thinwall hollow plastic shape similar to a cap on a plastic milk jug.

Awesome piece of equipment!! The sound is so clean and powerful compared to the 5.1 channel Sony receiver I replaced it with. Half the THD (0.019) vs. a comparable receiver (0.04) and it goes sooooo loud.

Pros: Power and elegant design. The Pure Direct setting overides the balance and tone controls so that you hear the music exactly how it was recorded.

Cons: Hard to see the little dash on the volume control. Should be an LED on the dial so you avoid blasting your neighbors out of bed. Also wish Crutchfield sold the separate tuner to go with it. They sell the matching CD player but not the tuner. Come on Crutch.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought an "open box" Yamaha R-S500 and it arrived on-time and in perfect cosmetic condition with all accessories. The receiver is easy to set up and controls are intuitive. Connecting to components is flexible. FM requires an external antenna, or you get virtually nothing and I live in a city. The receiver sounds great, has virtually no background noise, and has plenty of power for my multiroom system although I am using the useful Zone 2 feature to drive a separate small amplifier for outside speakers that aren't a part of my Niles speaker switch. I do not have it connected to a subwoofer. Now the negative part: even when the receiver is at low volume for background music with only two speakers, it can unexpectedly shut off, with no power surges or other power interruption. May have to return it for that problem, but otherwise a great receiver.

Pros: Great Crutchfield communication and delivery. Appreciated the online advice about multi-room speaker arrangements. The Yamaha R-S500 is easy to set-up, use and sounds great. The Zone 2 feature is major plus for multi-room flexibility.

Cons: The Yamaha R-S500 does not have a 12V trigger, and my unit occasionally switches off without provocation. The remote is somewhat complex, but not required for most daily functions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Controls and display well done
Good sound quality
Phono input

No trigger output for sub-woofer (only the R_S700 has it)
No sub-woofer equalizer

Be careful if you download the manual. I was fooled thinking that there was a
trigger output. The manual covers both the S500 and the S700.

The sub-woofer output is completely useless. As far as I can tell, they are
combining the left and right signals and maybe applying a low pass filter. Hard
to say as there is nothing in the manual that describes the sub-woofer output
signal. The specifications do not list the sub-woofer output.
If a sub-woofer is important to you, skip over this unit.

I ended up using my own home-built sub-woofer equalizer connected to the TAPE
REC outputs as the signal is too low from the sub-woofer output.

If I could do it again, I would get something else.

Audio Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

High-Quality Power Amplifier: With 75 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.04% THD), the R-S500 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A and B speakers at the same time.

Wide Frequency Response: The receiver's wide frequency response, 10Hz to 50kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of any source with two channel analog outputs.

Dual Zone Capability: The R-S500 allows you to play two different sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2. A separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system is required for zone 2.

Loudness: The amount of loudness compensation is adjustable, using a rotary knob on the front panel.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct feature bypasses the bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for the best sound from any source.

Record Out Selector: Front panel rotary knobs let you listen to one source, while feeding a different source to the Tape and Line 1 outputs for recording.

Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are too far apart for dual banana plugs.

Bi-Wire: Compatible speakers can be bi-wired using the A and B speaker terminals simultaneously (they are wired in parallel).

Impedance Switch: The R-S500 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with two pair of 6 ohm speakers.

Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) turntable cartridges. If you have a moving coil (MC) cartridge a phono preamp is necessary.

Subwoofer Output: The stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub.

Headphone Jack: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the maximum volume level; used to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -89.5 dB to +16.5 dB).

Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to specify the volume level when the power is turned on; choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -89.5 dB to + 16.5 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Power Management: The power (main room and Zone 2) can be set to turn off after a specific amount of time without any adjustments being made; options include 4, 8, or 12 hours.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the receiver off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Remote Control

RAX25 Remote Control: The remote control can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components from Yamaha and other manufacturers. The remote is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand TVs, VCRs, DVD player/recorders, Blu-ray disc players, DVRs, cable boxes, and satellite receivers, along with Yamaha CD player/recorders, MD player/recorders, tape decks, and LD players.

Remote Jack: The receiver a mini-jack input and output for use with other compatible components.

Add-on Devices

Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: An optional SiriusConnect Home Tuner kit (item number 607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately) can be connected to the R-S500, allowing you to listen to Sirius Satellite Radio through the receiver. You can search Sirius stations by Channel, Category or Direct Tuning and up to 40 presets can be memorized. You can also change what Sirius information appears on the receiver's display; choose from Channel Name, Channel Number, Category Name, Artist Name or Song Title.

Note: In addition to a SiriusConnect tuner, you will need a subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio to receive programming.

iPod Dock: With the optional YDS-12 iPod Dock (item number 022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your compatible iPod or iPhone to the R-S500 and control audio playback using the remote control. The YDS-12 is Made for iPod and Works with iPhone compliant and supports the following iPod model functions (as of 9/10/2012):
