Our take on the Yamaha RX-797

by Dave Bar
Yamaha

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

Enjoy rich, natural sound with this capable stereo receiver from Yamaha. The RX-797 delivers 100 watts per channel of clean, room-filling power to your speakers, reproducing your music with authority. Plus you'll get advanced extras like XM Ready Satellite Radio capability and flexible multi-room options, complete with a remote for the 2nd listening room.

Yamaha's engineers have taken extensive care with every aspect of the RX-797's design and construction to maximize audio performance. The receiver incorporates high-current amplification to ensure dynamic, wide-range sound, with ample reserve power to handle demanding musical peaks. You can use its direct modes to bypass the tone, balance, and loudness controls — creating the purest possible sound and reducing potential interference with the audio signal. Plus the RX-797's solidly built chassis is designed to minimize any effects that internal or external vibration might have on sound quality.

The receiver's integrated AM/FM tuner provides 40 presets for quick access to all your favorite stations. And it comes "XM Ready," so it's easy to add exciting XM satellite radio programming to your system. Simply plug in an optional XM tuner kit and add an XM subscription to enjoy instant access to more than 170 digital channels of music, talk, news, and sports.

The '797 provides plenty of inputs for your audio/video gear and offers a separate subwoofer output that makes it easy to add a powered sub to your system. Dual-room/dual-source capability lets you and a housemate watch two different A/V sources simultaneously (TV, receiver, amplifier, or powered speakers required in second room). And a preamp-out/main-in loop keeps you ready for system expansion. You also get a multibrand remote that gives you easy control of your receiver and the other audio/video components in your system.

Audio Features

ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.

High-Quality Power Amplifier: With 100 watts of power per channel (at 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.019% THD), the RX-797 delivers solid, reliable audio performance even when driving both A and B speaker systems at the same time.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 50kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of any source with two channel analog outputs.

Dual Zone Capability: The RX-797 allows you to play two different sources in two zones. The receiver has a pair of stereo preamp outputs and a composite video output for Zone 2. You can control the receiver from the second zone using the supplied zone 2 remote control when an infrared signal repeater system is used. A separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system is required for zone 2.

Impedance Switch: The RX-797 has an impedance switch, allowing operation with 4 ohm speakers.

Loudness: The amount of loudness compensation is adjustable, using a rotary knob on the front panel.

CD Direct Amplification: The CD Direct Amp feature routes the CD signal directly to a specially built-in amplifier, bypassing the input selector, bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. This eliminates any alteration to the CD signal and produces the purest possible sound.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct feature bypasses the bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for the best sound from any source.

Record Out Selector: This feature lets you listen to one source, while feeding a different source to the Tape/MD and VCR outputs for recording.

Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and there is no good spot for a pin connector. Bare wire, single banana, and dual banana plugs are compatible.

Pre Out/Main In Loops: The left and right preamp outputs are connected to left and right main amp inputs, respectively, with "U" shaped metal jumpers. The jumpers may be removed to facilitate the connection of an equalizer or external amplifier.

Subwoofer: The RCA sub output voltage is 4 volts.

Phono: The RCA phono input is designed for moving magnet (MM) or high output moving coil (MC) turntable cartridges. If you have a low output MC cartridge an in-line boosting transformer or moving coil head amplifier is necessary.

Headphone Jack: The receiver has a standard 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel for private listening. When headphones are plugged in, the receiver's speaker output is not muted, so remember to turn the A and B speakers off.

Back-Up Memory: The unit is equipped with a back-up memory. This function provides approximately one week of memory storage when the power cord is disconnected.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer turns the receiver off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Remote Control

RAX100 Remote Control: The main remote control can operate the receiver as well as other remote control capable components from Yamaha and other manufacturers. The remote is pre-programmed with control signals for other brand TVs, VCRs, and DVD players.

RAX17 Remote Control: The zone 2 remote control allows you to switch the second room output on and off, select the source, adjust the volume, and recall preset radio stations from the second room.

Remote Jack: The receiver has a mini-jack input and output for use with other compatible Yamaha components.

Add-on Devices

XM Satellite Ready: The optional XM Direct 2 Home Tuner (220XHD2H1, sold separately) lets you enjoy XM Satellite Radio through the XM-ready receiver. Simply connect the XM Direct 2 Home Tuner to the XM jack on back of the receiver, place and aim the included antenna for optimum reception, and you are ready to start enjoying commercial-free music, plus live sports, new, talk, and exclusive entertainment.

Note: In addition to the XM Direct 2 Home Tuner and the XM-ready receiver, you will need a subscription to XM Satellite Radio to receive XM programming.

GREAT SOUND FROM A GREAT 2 CHANNEL RECEIVER!

Written By Yawtre, Fredericksburg , TX on Sunday, October 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one of these from Crutchfield a few years ago, and it is still worklng great. You could not ask for a better sounding, solidly built 2 channel receiver. These kind of receivers; for the hard core audiophile stereo listener, are fast becoming dinosaurs; what with the multi gazillion channel receivers being made nowadays. If you are interested in just powerful 2 channel stereo listening; this receiver can't be beat. I am glad a just bought a spare one of these; before Chrutchfield sold out of this discontinued model. At my age; I expect these two receivers to last me the rest of my life! Thanks to Yamaha for building such a great product! Thanks to Crutchfield for their great prices and customer service!

A bit weak low end

Written By Carey, Harpers Ferry, WV on Sunday, October 02, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm mostly pleased. I replaced a 10 y/o Onkyo stereo receiver (also non- surround sound) with the Yamaha. The Yamaha does have a more punchy sound, but really does lack on the low end. The loudness control dial idea is a farce, only lowering total volume. This receiver would be killer with a traditional loudness control. Unless you have a powered subwoofer, expect to keep the bass level at full, or the volume level rather high.

EXCELLENT

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am so happy I finally purchased this amplifier. It's been on my wish list for several years, waiting for my 21 year old Yamaha A-45 to quit, which it hasn't but has some problems. When I saw it was$100 off, it is time to buy. I am powering a set of 30 year old Pioneer bass reflex speakers in one room and a pair of 21 year old Yamaha acoustic suspension speakers in another room, also my TV sound through it and older CD player. I love the Pure Sound options. Yes, I fit in with 'the less is more' group perfectly. This is just what I needed. The sound is wonderful. Thank-you Crutchfield. It also arrived quickly and in perfect condition. I expect to enjoy this amplifier for many years. Most highy recommended.

Clean and crisp sound at what I view as a modest price. If you value sound quality above surround sound you will not be disappointed. Quite a few nice features, such as dubbing capability, as well. I am very impressed and very well satisfied with both the receiver and Crutchfield.

Great Stereo Receiver

Written By Gary, NYC on Sunday, June 19, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently replacing my old Logitech Z-5500 speakers with this receiver to power my Energy CB-20 bookshelf speakers, it is much better than the muddy sounds you get from a poor 5.1 surround sound.

This receiver is very powerful even at 8'o clock position is enough to power the sound through my living room 18X20, this receiver have probably more power than average users need.

Didn't realize the receiver was this big until I try to place it on my desk, so heads up use a measurement tape to measure before hand.

Yamaha RX-797

Written By ChipW, Woburn, MA on Saturday, June 04, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace my 1980's era Yamaha receiver whose tuner had died. Other than that, it was still working after 30 years! That kind of longevity made me lean towards getting another Yamaha. In addition, I did not want to replace my Bose 901 speakers. These speakers require an inline Bose equalizer and today's home theater surround sound systems do not support such a configuration. The RX-797 is a stereo receiver and was basically a drop-in replacement for my old Yamaha. Everything works great. I was easily able to hook up the sound from my new HDTV to the 797 for great sounding movies. It's also nice to have a remote to control the volume. All in all, a nice system at a nice price.

audiophile receiver

Written By Zeke, Boyce, VA on Tuesday, May 17, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The RX-797 is a throw back to the days of audiophile receivers. It has all the
bells and whistles of audiophile gear. Their is a separation of preamp and
amplifier so that a equalizer may be inserted. Also included is a tape monitor
for hooking up a tape deck. Its great to have a product that does not 5 or 7
channels. The sound is superb! Great depth and transparency.

Nice Reciever

Written By Jim, Fair Oaks California on Wednesday, April 13, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace a 20 year old Luxman R115 receiver. So far
this new receiver works really well. The sound coming from my Polk speakers
sounds very clean. I am using this receiver to supply the sound from my flat
screen TV and blue ray DVD/CD.
The one thing I do miss on this receiver is the lack of a signal strength meter
for aiming my FM antenna.
I think this receiver is a good value for the money plus Crutchfield help and
service are the best.

Nothing but Yamaha for 25 years

Written By SteveK, Central, SC on Tuesday, April 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After about 20 years, my Yamaha RX-700U started to develop some static and
popping in the volume control. I've bought nothing but Yamaha for 25+ years
(turntable, cassette deck, 3 CD players, and a VCR... yes, they did make them).
This is my 3rd Yamaha receiver. I bought the first one after a side by side
comparison to a couple other makes -- there really was no comparison! You
can't beat the clean, NATURAL sound of a Yamaha.

With this RX-797, I am upgrading from 65 to 100 w/channel to drive a pair of
vintage Infinity RS4000a's that have recently been refoamed. Everything's been
hooked up for a couple of weeks, so I am just beginning to enjoy the extra bit of
clean power along with some new features.

I love music and don't watch a lot of movies, so I really didn't want to sacrifice
clean stereo sound for not-as-clean surround sound. If you're all about music,
you'll love Yamaha
(because that's what they're all about).

OK................

Written By Rob, Eagle, WI on Tuesday, March 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased because of many input jacks and the power. Am satisfied with
these two features. Don't like the twist terminals for speaker connections..they
are hard to tighten when you have to reach over the top of receiver to connect
wires; the banana jack alternative connection is the way to go. Also seems that
the FM tuner is not as strong, fuzzy sound, as my old 1972 JVC. I'm not sure
how the "loudness control" is supposed to enhance sound: it just decreases
out put volume when set off the 0db setting--can do the same thing with the
volume control!!

Good receiver

Written By AndyR, Albuquerque NM on Monday, March 14, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A handsome piece of audio gear with lots of inputs and outputs. It's heavy and
the internals appear stout. I bought it because it was on sale and has a
preamp out and is XM ready. Sounds good and gets loud. I'm no audiophile, so
all I can say is so far, so good.

One thing I don't like is the input selector is a knob with very soft detents and no
reference. Takes some getting used to and makes me wonder why. But all in
all I'm happy with this purchase.

Yamaha RX-797

Written By MikeH, Orlando, FL on Saturday, March 05, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace a 25 year old unit I had that had gone bad. I needed
something that could drive both indoor speakers as well as a set of outdoor speakers. I
started looking at home theater systems but most did not support a second zone set of
speakers. The Yamaha has an A and B speaker output and you can play either or both
at the same time. With my old unit the sound level would go way down when I switched
on both sets of speakers. But with theYamaha the sound level does not change when I
switch between playing just the indoor and/or outdoor speakers or both. I have my TV,
DVD, and CD players all connected to the Yamaha. It was easy to connect and
everything worked the first time. The sound is great. I wish I would have upgraded years
ago.

Great Receiver

Written By RickZ, Hershey, PA on Thursday, February 24, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

An earlier Yamaha receiver purchased in 1993 was having some problems with input
selector, and when I saw this receiver in Crutchfield catalog, I decided to update.

This new one has electronic input selector, should not have same problem as older
one, and the sound is even better, if that's possible. I had never tried XM before, but
once I get my outdoor antenna, I expect to enjoy it a lot. Sound is crystal clear.

Highly recommended.

Regarding the Yamaha RX - 797

Written By RonS, Lafayette, In on Friday, February 04, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently ordered a pair of Infinity P162 loudspeakers and decided to match them with the
Yamaha RX - 797 stereo receiver. I am quite pleased with all that I've been hearing. I delight
in the fact that I can hear not only many things that I never noticed before, but the symbols on
a drum kit can be heard loud and clear on several CD tracts ( such as Led Zepplin 2). I'm
glad that I placed this order. I'm greatful for the friendly advice and expertize that I received
from the techs that I spoke to. If I'd purchased this gear from another source, I'd most likely
would have paid twice as much...my wallet smiles. If I ever need to replace any of my gear or
simply want to upgrade ??, I will give Crutchfield a call.

Great Unit

Written By Ron, Franklin, GA on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 4th Yamaha AMP I have bought. My first I bought back in 1984. That Unit lasted me 15 Years and it was lightning that got it. The other 2 are still in use with my Video systems. I have come to expect great sound and quality from Yamaha and this one delivers. I needed an amp that would drive my Bose 901 VI. This Amp has no problem generating load and clear sound through these speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love it. I am no tech savvy person, but managed to get it up and running---and
connected to TV,DVD,and even with 5 Pairs of built-in speakers in my home. And they
all work---(for the first time, actually)---correctly.
Easy to use, appears to be well built, sturdy, design is appealing.
My Only complaint is the FM reception. A previous review influenced my purchase--
saying there was great reception. I found that true of many stations, but, Not my favorite
and most listened to. I am amongst hills, and have always had such problems. But,
overall, the reception is markedly better than the Old Kenwood I dumped. Will add an
external antenna.

Nothing but 5 star.

Written By Paul, Woodstock, VA on Saturday, January 29, 2011

I have had this receiver for approx. 18 months and it rocks. I am pushing 4 12" 3 ways, a pair of sony book shelf speakers, and a Yamaha SW315 250 watt sub. It literally blows the place away when I'm in the mood. Any type of music is such a pleasure to listen to. Even at low volume, many friends have commented on the rich flawless sound. Classical or rock, or anything in between it performes perfectly. I replaced a Yamaha amp I purchased in 1981 that was 80 watts per channel, and yes it still works and gave it to my Daughter and she listens to her stereo several times a week using the old amp and tuner. I am a Yamaha fan, only because they last and sound good for decades.

A sign of the times

Written By Flacker, Missouri on Friday, January 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit was shipped from Crutchfield very well and received in a timely fashion.
The sale price from Crutchfield was the Best on the Net !
The unit has a well built feel to the knobs and buttons, The layout of function is non complicated unlike some Yamaha HTR units but its not fair compare them to each other because they do different functions. It does less but it does what it was built for well !
This RX-797 unit has good usable power and a noticeable difference in quality of sound at high volumes when the cd direct mode is used.
This unit is a bit Bright in the mids for my taste but that can be dealt with.
The RX-797 is clearly at the top of the 2channel amps in this range of new receivers.

sounds good + comes with useless zone 2 remote

Written By SMS, Orange, MA on Tuesday, December 28, 2010

This receiver replaced a 1980's DUAL Amplifier. The sound is good but certainly not
better than the old amp. The reason why I upgraded is that I wanted to control a second
set of speakers for another room. I was hoping that the Zone 2 remote would make this
possible. The Zone 2 remote like the main remote is an Infrared remote which only works
if you sit in front of the unit. Why this remote doesn't use RF is beyond me. But even if it did
it would still not do you much good unless you buy additional Yamaha equipment. From
what i can make out of the manual the you can buy an additional infrared receiver for the
second room that is hard wired to the main unit. Who was the engeineer on this one???.
Crutchfield does not even list this infrared receiver as an accessory.
In short if you are used to having things working out of the box this is not for you.
The PURE DIRECT feature and the CD DIRECT AMP seem to bypass a few tone control
functions of the preamp. Hardly worth making a big fuzz about. All in all a pretty avarage
unit with an additional remote control for your 3 year old son or your dog to play with.

Overwhelmed

Written By Yamaha Dog, Chicago on Friday, December 24, 2010

I bought all other receivers before I bought this one because the Yamaha costed more.
In the end...the extra $$ paid are penauts compared to the sound improvement. The
tone flexibility on this unit is out of this world. I can't say enough. I own vintage 70s
Pioneer receivers as well and I must say that i don't miss those units with the Yamaha
playing. Thinking about buying another one for another room...

I am so glad i got this. It sounds great and the separation of both speakers is also great. I have an Onkyo which is good but not like this unit. I also have a subwoofer to it and a eq and it just blew me away the difference the sound is compared to my Onkyo. I use to have a home theatre reciever years ago but now i don't really care i watch tv and the sound comes through the reciever and it sounds just great especially watching movies. It may not be surround sounds but still has the oomph you get in a theatre. I am glad i got this.

A Great Receiver/Amp

Written By CampSpringsJohn, Camp Springs, Ky on Monday, March 22, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with this receiver! It produces a very clear sound that I have found hard to find with todays receivers. I use the THD (total harmonic distortion) as a gauge of quality. I love it. It also does an excellent job with both AM and FM reception. I am receiving stations I did not know I could. I'm receiving FM stations from 100 miles away with no outside antenna, and the AM side does not suffer from any interference from lights or the TV if it's turned on. I had to do some playing to figure out how to use my equalizer on it, but I did it, and works great.

BTW, my receiver does have an indicator on the volume knob. It does not have watt meters, which I was used to, but I can live without them.

Blast from the past, should have stayed there

Written By Josh, Pittsburgh on Sunday, May 17, 2009

i expected this reciever to operate similar to its yamaha HT counterparts interms of sophistication of user interface and features (in a stereo model). note, this unit, while excellent at what it does, left me questioning what year it was produced/designed and if that was in the past 5 yrs. no visual indication of volume level- i was suprised not to find this and was almost convinced my reciever was damaged. it leaves you paying close attention to the small dot on the knob, not convenient from distances over 3ft. i missed some of the adjustment features to individual channels such as compensation for treb & bass. this made it more difficult to calibrate my speakers and audio source. kind of a "thats all?" reaction after alot of tuning.
the good: excellent power output, amazingly low distortion- pleasing look and sturdy construction.
the bad: poor sophistication, bare bones interface, no visual vol. level indication. no usb support.
the ugly: price doesnt justify the design. pure direct is just a bypass of the knobs on the front, and cd direct amp is almost the exact same function, but the display completely blacks out, making things even more confusing.
i guess i was expecting this reciever to be more active than its extremely passive way of processing signals.
i was on the fence about buying HT vs Stereo, and think the option to expand with a different yamaha reciever would have been a better purchase for me.

Finally its over

Written By William, Inez, KY on Tuesday, February 10, 2009

With the help of Crutchfield, I finally found a AMP/Rec that can push my Bose 901's. I haven't got the XM hooked up yet, but listening to local washboard church music I had the wood floors moving at 1/3 power.
Sound is clear, powerful. No feedback.
The only addition is the volume control, no increments to know where you're at, you have to eyeball it. I do miss the lighted meter boxes.

Just What I Needed

Written By John, Davidsonville, Maryland on Monday, February 09, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Bose 901 Series VI Direct/Reflecting speaker system that I had purchased required a receiver that could work with an equalizer. The Yamaha RX-797 was a perfect fix. The equalizer, DVD player, and other components were easy to hook up to my new Yamaha RX-797 receiver. The user manual instructions and diagrams provided made the connections very easy. The sounds from my new speakers are incredible.

You won't be disappointed

Written By Anonymous, Albany, NY on Sunday, February 08, 2009

I required a true two channel stereo with a phono input so my choices were somewhat limited. This receiver more than met my expectations.
I guess I should not have been surprised as my first experience with Yamaha Natural sound was quite a while back when I purchased a CR2020 which was the original Natural sound receiver by Yamaha. After many years of service it finally gave it up and I replaced it with separates, which of course sounded very good, but also well above the Yamaha price range.
When the preamp lost the left channel and it would cost more to fix than replace I decided I would give Yamaha a try again.
The Yamaha RX-797 actually sounds better than the old one ever did. Much cleaner with more separation. I don't use the pre-out function, but this unit has sufficient inputs for all my components. There are enough inputs for my Delphi XM receiver (dtv), cassette deck, CD/RW (vcr), CD player, phono, and IPOD deck (dvd).
A word about the depth of the unit. The unit is actually 13.5 inches deep, but the listed specs account for the clearance you will need for your cable connections.

Perfect for our needs

Written By Michael, Colorado Springs, CO on Tuesday, September 30, 2008

We needed an amp that could work with an equalizer due to the high metal ceilings in our brewpub. The Yamaha RX-797 fit the bill! If it had an Ipod dock I would have gave it 5 stars, but it is a 5 star amp. The music sounds clean with plenty of power to spare.

Surprised

Written By Jack, Collierville, TN on Monday, September 08, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As I'm sure you already know, good quality, reasonably priced, two channel audio gear is not as easy to find as it once was. After checking specifications and reading reviews, I decided to purchase this receiver to replace an older Sony ES receiver that had developed some problems and was too costly to repair.

I design and build custom speakers and have been playing this receiver through a pair of custom built speakers. Needless to say, if there were any problems with the receiver's audio, you would hear it. I am very impressed with this receiver and quite surprised at how well it compares to my high end separate audio components. For the money, this receiver is hard to beat. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who was interested in two channel stereo and didn't want spend thousands of dollars on components.

Great Receiver

Written By Leo, Rosemount, Minnesota on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver and a pair of Polk Audio LSI9 speakers to match up
with Yamaha's 697 CD player that I already owned. I couldn't be more
pleased. The speakers are rated 25 to 200 watts but are 4 ohm so the
receiver, rated at 100watts at 8 ohms, has more than enough power to
drive great sound even at low volumes. I use this system almost
exclusively for listening to music and it more than meets my needs. If you
primarily into listening to music this 2 channel receiver will be hard to beat.
The build quality is outstanding and is backed by a 2 year warranty. This
was also my first time ordering from Crutchfield. Your reputation for
customer service is well deserved.

I've had this receiver now for several months and it just amazes me every time I turn it on . This is the best investment in audio equipment I have ever made . Poor quality recordings wont fare well with this Yamaha . This is audiophile qualilty and demands a clean signal . Its also an excellent fm receiver , am reception is good . You can't buy a better receiver than the RX-797 for the cost .

No more volume knob tapping.

Written By John S, Canandaigua, New York on Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am so happy that this receiver is still sold. I had been looking for months and it is the only one that has a pre amp out and in. It works great and I figured out a way to use my equalizer with another set of speakers (Bose 251's) that can not run though the equalizer. I run the Pre-Amp through my Niles Audio TSB-3 Tape Switch Box. Care full if you do this because you get bad feedback if you don't leave one of the tape decks (#1 or #2) on play while switching over to the amp input for #1 or #2, even if the speakers are off. This receiver had more inputs than my old stereo with one input open still. I was disappointed that I could not use an 8-OHM speaker with a 4-OHM speaker at the same time, so my Bose speakers are no longer used. This receiver replaced my failing Onkyo TX-7000. It is 25 years old. The volume knob was wearing out and the quartz locked FM tuning was drifting.
I finally have a remote control for this receiver and it works through glass. The combination of using the Yamaha remote and the remote for the PC works great with enough power to fill the back yard and house.
I tried a record on the turntable and the sound through the RX-797 is better and stronger than the old Onkyo.

Fingerpick

Written By Doug, Ashland, Oregon on Friday, February 22, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent Integrated Amp & Tuner. For those that may have read elsewhere that this unit does not function well with equalizers, I must tell you that is not true. We have used a number of older and newer EQs with this unit and they all function well.

While the signal from the coupler jacks is not as strong as with some amps it is certainly within specs, especially with studio grade equipment. It does better when such outboard equipment is set to -10db rather than +4 when you have the choice.

I recommend for those that want an eq with professional quality and versatility the 204. This unit has both bottom end enhancements as well as high frequency aural exciters which allow you to dial in thuderous very low bass frequencies as well as the all important ambient sparkle and life that high harmonics give. Paired together these two units (the 797 & 204) provide an amazing and flexible sound.

The subwoofer circuit is perfect for those with limited range bookshelf or studio monitors and the headphone amp (usinging CD Direct) is one of the best I have seen, rivaling even the highest end headphone dedicated amps that cost several thousand dollars. I use high end headphones in addition to a wide range of speakers with this amp. The sound is articulate and sweet. This is a winner and amps of this type and quality are becoming exceedingly rare. Highly recommended. Doug -

i bought this amp to replace my old sharp that i've been using for about 15 years.it's hard to find good 2 channel amps anymore, but yamaha got this one right on.it's only rated at 100 watts per channel but i think it's actually doing more.what's really great about this amp is the sub output and built in phono pre amp.i still use a turn table and believe me, the sound is awesome.hook a powered sub up to the 4 volt pre out and really feel the bass this amp is capable of producing...

clean, tight, and neutral

Written By raimar, Washington DC on Monday, December 18, 2006

FAR BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS:

I paired this unit with a pair of bookshelf B&W
speakers- and a Yamaha lower-end dvd player and
can't believe how good it sounds (I managed to
use my high-end SAE separates from the 1980s until
now ---finally broke down and got a receiver!)

The FM tuner (with the single-wire antenna) picks
up stations as far away as Baltimore with ease- again
very clean and easy on the ears.

Music now has that elastic, naturally bouncy
quality...very clean, tight, and neutral.

Rated power of 100 Watts is more than enough for
most. A setting of 3/10 will probably be uncomfortable
for most non-traumatized ears.
