Our take on the Yamaha RX-A1010

Yamaha knows great sound — and so do our customers. They consistently praise Yamaha receivers for their clear and powerful sound — both for movies and music. The RX-A1010 has the flexibility you need to make the most of the latest entertainment options, whether it's a 3D Blu-ray player or PANDORA® Internet radio.

3D picture and sound
One of your top priorities when comparing receivers should be the connections — what can you hook up to it? The RX-A1010 has a total of eight HDMI inputs, and they can handle 3D video with ease. Two HDMI outputs allow you to send video to both a TV and a projector. This receiver's built-in audio processing can handle pretty much any surround sound format you're likely to encounter, including the latest high-res formats available on many Blu-ray soundtracks.

Lots of power, lots of possibilities
You can use all that power to drive seven home theater speakers in the traditional arrangement: three front speakers, a pair to the sides, and a pair in the back. But you have other options, too. If you have a 5.1 system and your front left and right speakers are biampable, you could use those two spare channels to biamp them for clearer, more dynamic sound. Or you could use two channels to pipe music outside or to another room. It's nice to have that flexibility.

A music menu as big as the Internet
The RX-A1010's Ethernet port opens the door to a world of fresh, new listening options. Thousands of Internet radio stations, music services like Rhapsody® and Napster® (some require a subscription), and music files streamed from your networked PC. Just think of the possibilities.

Your iPod® isn't just a music player, it's a remote control, too
The RX-A1010 has a direct USB input on the front panel so you can plug your iPod touch® or iPhone® directly in. That's definitely convenient, but it also sounds much better because you can bypass the iPod's audio circuitry and use the receiver's instead. And Yamaha offers a free, downloadable app for both Apple® and Android™ devices that you can use to control this receiver with ease.

Perfect balance is just one touch away
Yamaha's auto-calibration feature tunes your speaker settings beautifully to your room. Plug in the included microphone and place it in your favorite seat. The receiver performs detailed sonic analysis of every speaker in your home theater system, and adjusts each one individually. In no time at all, your receiver is ready to give you the highest performance no matter what speakers you have or where they're positioned.

Yamaha AVENTAGE® — premium design and performance
Yamaha designed their AVENTAGE series of receivers from the ground up with sound quality as the ultimate goal. They paid attention to the little details that add up to better performance — from a solidly built double-bottomed chassis, to separate power supplies for digital and analog circuitry. And to top it off, AVENTAGE receivers are backed by a three-year warranty.

Audio Features

Aventage Performance: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

  • Aluminum Front Panel: The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
  • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
  • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality.
  • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.

110 Watts x 7 Channel: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 AV Receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 110 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.09% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability

Power Amp Assign: The built-in seven channel amplifier can be programmed to power various speaker configurations:

  • 7ch Normal: Seven speakers are powered in the main room. Both presence & surround back speakers can be connected; whose power changes based on the selected surround mode.
  • 7ch+1Zone: Seven speakers in the main room (front, center, surround, and surround back) and two speakers in a second zone are connected to the receiver; when the second zone is turned on, the surround back speakers turn off.
  • 5ch Bi-amp: Five speakers are powered in the main room (front, center, and surround) with the two extra amplifier channels used to bi-amp the front speakers.
  • 5ch Bi-amp+SB: The receiver powers five speakers in the main room (front, center, and surround) with the two extra amplifier channels used to bi-amp the front speakers; the surround back speakers are powered by an external amp.

Bi-Amp Speaker Connections: This receiver allows you to reassign the surround back amplifier channels to make bi-amp connections (compatible speakers required). A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.

Presence Speakers: One pair of speaker terminals (Bi-Amp/Zone 2/Presence Speakers) can be used for Presence speakers, Bi-amping front speakers or for driving a pair of speakers in a second zone. The Presence speakers supplement the sound from the front speakers with extra ambient effects produced by Cinema DSP. These effects include sounds that the filmmakers intended to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambience. The Presence speakers should be placed at the front of the room 1-3 feet outside of the front speakers and at least 6 feet off the floor.

Note: You must select in the menu whether the speaker terminals are being used for Presence or Zone2. When the Presence or Zone2 speakers are engaged, the surround back speakers are disabled.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

192kHz/24-bit Burr Brown DACs: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.

Ultra Low Jitter Circuitry: Ultra Low Jitter PLL circuitry helps optimize sound imaging by reducing Jitter from digital sources, including HDMI, using a more precise timing control.

YPAO Technology: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters - such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

  • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each.
  • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel.
  • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel.
  • EQ: Each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of 3 target settings before running the setup.
    • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
    • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
    • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
  • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.

Multi-Channel/Stereo Decoding Formats: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) and Stereo decoding formats.

Stereo
2ch Stereo 2-channel stereo sound (from the front speakers only), regardless of the playback source
Straight/Direct Modes
Straight 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional effect processing
Pure Direct

turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel analog sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer

Dolby Digital

DTS Neo: 6 (Cinema/Music) matrix decoding technology for achieving 6.1-channel surround playback with 2-channel sources
Dolby Pro Logic
Dolby Pro Logic processes any high-quality stereo (two-channel) movie and music audio into four playback channels of surround sound - Front Left, Front Right, Center, Mono-Surrounds
Dolby Pro Logic II (Cinema/Music/Game) a matrix surround decoding technology, Dolby Pro Logic II detects the directional cues that occur naturally in stereo content and uses these elements to create a five-channel surround sound playback experience
Dolby Pro Logic IIx (Cinema/Music/Game) enables discrete multichannel playback from 2-channel or multichannel sources; supports up to 7.1ch playback
DSD
DSD 6ch audio signals are stored as single-bit values at a high-frequency sampling rate of 2.8224 MHz, while noise shaping and oversampling are used to reduce distortion - providing a better audio quality with a dynamic range of up to 128 db.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). An HDMI connection is required for playback of the following 7.1ch formats - Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD.

Pro Logic II Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes:

  • Panorama: Sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect.
  • Dimension: Adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room.
  • Center Width: Moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers.

Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

CINEMA DSP: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 CINEMA DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

Cinema DSP Movie Modes

Standard emphasize the surround feeling without disturbing the original acoustic positioning of multi-channel audio, such as Dolby Digital and DTS
Spectacle reproduces a broad theater soundfield that matches cinemascope and wider-screen movies with an excellent dynamic range providing everything from very small sound effects to large, impressive sounds
Sci-Fi enjoy a variety of cinematographically created virtual spaces reproduced with clear separation between dialogue, sound effects, and background music
Adventure restrains reverberations, but puts emphasis on reproducing a powerful space expanded widely to the left and right; reproduced depth is also restrained relatively to ensure the separation between audio channels and the clarity of the sound
Drama reverberations are modest, but offers and optimum 3D feeling, reproducing effects and background music softly around clear words and center positioning in a way that does not fatigue the listener
Mono Movie produces the optimum expansion and reverberation to the original mono audio soundtrack to create a comfortable space with a certain sound depth
Cinema DSP Entertainment Modes
Sports voice of the commentator and sportscaster are positioned clearly at the center while the atmosphere of the stadium expands in an optimal space to offer the listener a feeling of presence in the stadium
Action Game various effects make the player feel like they are right in the middle of the action, allowing for greater concentration
Role Playing Game adds depth to the soundfield for natural and realistic reproduction of background music, special effects, and dialogue
Music Video emphasizes the vividness of vocals and solo play and the beat of rhythm instruments, and to the surround soundfield that reproduces the space of a big live  hall
Cinema DSP Music Modes
Hall in Munich simulates a concert hall with approximately 2500 seats in Munich; beautiful reverberation spread richly, creating a calming atmosphere - the listener's virtual seat is at the center left of the arena
Hall in Vienna simulates an approximately 1700-seat middle-sized concert hall with a shoebox shape that is tradition in Vienna; creates extremely complete reflections from all around the audience, producing a very full rich sound
Chamber creates a relatively wide space with a high ceiling like an audience hall in a palace
Cellar Club simulates a live house with a low ceiling and home atmosphere for a realistic live sound
The Roxy Theater simulates a rock music live house in Los Angeles with the virtual listening position at the center left of the hall
The Bottom Line simulates the front stage of the Bottom Line, a famous New York jazz club - offering real and vibrant sound
7ch Stereo use this program to output stereo sound from all speakers

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

  • DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
  • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
  • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
  • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
  • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

Adaptive DSP Level: This function selects whether to automatically adjust the Cinema DSP effect level in conjunction with volume adjustments.

CINEMA DSP 3D: The actually measured soundfield data in recorded soundtracks contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of theses sound images so that it can create the accurate and intensive stereoscopic soundfield in your listening room. CINEMA DSP 3D does this by using the receiver's Presence (height) Speakers.

Virtual Presence Speaker: Virtual Presence Speaker mode provides the 3D sound effect without actual front presence speakers. It creates virtual presence speakers from the receiver's front speakers, center speakers, and surround speakers, which brings you into a stereoscopic soundfield.

Virtual CINEMA DSP: Virtual CINEMA DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. This unit will switch to virtual CINEMA DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.

SILENT CINEMA: SILENT CINEMA makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of CINEMA DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue. Virtual CINEMA DSP lets you enjoy the effects of CINEMA DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front / center / presence speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dialogue Lift: This function adjust the vertical position of center sound when presence speakers are used. If dialogue is heard froma position lower than the TV screen, adjust this setting to raise the position (0-5).

Manual Speaker Setup: This feature allows you to manually adjust the following speaker settings:

  • Speaker Sizes: Set the size and connection status of speakers and subwoofers, and whether to designate a specific speaker (or subwoofer) for low-frequency sound.
    • Front: Large or Small
    • Center: Large, Small, or None
    • Surround: Large, Small, or None
    • Surround Back: Large (1/2), Small (1/2), or None
    • Subwoofer: Normal, Reverse, or None
  • Equalizer: Each of the full range channels can be adjusted individually using the seven band equalizer (63Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.khz, 6.3kHz, 16kHz.)
  • Bass Crossover: Select the crossover frequency (40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 160, or 200Hz) of all the speakers set to Small. Audio with a frequency below this limit (40-200Hz) will be output from the subwoofer or the front speakers.
  • Extra Bass: Select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
  • Speaker Distance: Set the distance between the speakers/subwoofer and the listening point, so that the sound from each speaker and the subwoofer reaches the listening point at the appropriate timing. Select from 1 to 80 feet in 0.5 foot steps.
  • Speaker Level Adjustment: Adjust the volume (-10 to +10 dB) for each speaker and the subwoofer so that the sound is balanced. A test tone is played back through the receiver for each speaker and subwoofer to help with adjustment.

Bass and Treble Control: You can independently adjust the bass (centered at 50Hz) and treble (centered at 20kHz) from -6dB to +6B in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.

Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control): Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others,

Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).

Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.

Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post speaker terminals for all speaker outputs (Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, Bi-Amp/Zone2/Presence). The function of the extra speaker terminals is set using the Power Amp Assign menu. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs and the collar surrounding the posts prevents the use of spade connectors.

Impedance Selection: You can select 8 ohms or 6 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application. The 6-ohm setting also allows you to connect 4-ohm speakers to the receiver's Front Speaker terminals.

Digital Inputs/Output: The Yamaha AV receiver is equipped with four optical digital inputs (3 rear/1 front), three coaxial digital inputs (rear), and one optical digital output (rear).

7.1ch Analog Input: This unit has a discrete 7.1-channel analog input for connecting DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players or an external decoder.

7.2ch Preamp Outputs: The A/V receiver features 7.2-channel pre-amp outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers.

Phono Input: The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input (MM), so you can connect your turntable and listen to your vinyl records with high-quality sound

Headphone Jack: The Yamaha RX-A1010 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

Video Features

1080p HDMI (v.1.4) with Dual Outputs: 1080p HDMI (v.1.4) with 3D and Audio Return Channel (8 In/2 Out) deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable. HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide you with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or A/V receiver and a video monitor, such as a High Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks can be used for 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats as well as digital video signals up to 1080p resolution (including 1080/24p). They also support Deep Color (30 bit and 36 bit), xvColor, 120 Hz and 24 Hz refresh rates, and auto Lip-Sync compensation. The two HDMI outputs are parallel so the same video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously.

Note: When you output a video signal from both HDMI outputs simultaneously, the receiver outputs the video signal at the highest resolution that both TVs connected to this unit can support. For example, if you are have connected a 1080p TV and a 720p TV, the receiver will output 720p video through both HDMI outputs.

1080p Video Upscaling: The Aventage Series RX-A1010 is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale 480i/480p video signals from analog-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 1080p. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolution. The receiver also features extremely precise motion adaptive and edge adaptive deinterlacing and multi-cadence detection (including 3-2 pull-down).

Note: You can also convert a composite video signal to a component video and vice-versa. HDMI can only be output via HDMI.

Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing: In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally.

3D Ready: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 AV receiver supports 3D HDMI pass-through from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). 3D provides a more engaging audio and video consumer experience. Note that special eyewear may be required for viewing 3D content

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Standby Through: When the Aventage Series RX-A1010 is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Yamaha Aventage AV receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.  For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

Lipsync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the Lipsync function automatically.

  • Auto: When connected to a TV via HDMI, automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-250ms) if the TV supports an automatic lipsync function.
  • Manually: You can manually delay the sound output up to 250ms to synchronize it with the video image.

HDTV-compatible Component Video: The Aventage Series RX-A1010 offers two component video inputs and a component video monitor output. These inputs and output have a frequency response of 5 Hz to 60 MHz and will pass High Definition video sources up to 1080p.

Front Panel AV Input: The front panel's Video Aux input features analog stereo RCA, composite video, S-video, and HDMI.

Background Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-A1010, you can select any video input, and listen to AM/FM radio, Internet audio, Sirius Satellite Radio (optional tuner required), or select songs from a USB device, at the same time.

Network Functions

Ethernet (LAN) Port: The Yamaha Aventage Series AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network for PC audio streaming, Internet Radio, and Firmware updates.

Network Capabilities: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A1010 offers networking capabilities and can serve as the hub of your home entertainment network that's connected to the Internet. Its powerful networking capabilities provide enjoyment of thousands of free Internet radio stations worldwide and full access to free and paid music streaming services such as Pandora, vTuner, Rhapsody, SiriusXM Internet Radio, and Napster. This receiver is also Windows 7 and DLNA 1.5 certified which allows access to music files on any computer or local NAS drive content available on the home network. In addition, you can download firmware updates directly from the Yamaha website.

Internet Radio: If your home network has a broadband Internet connection you can listen to any of the thousands of stations available on Internet radio using the included vTuner database, through the RX-A1010 AV receiver. You can also stream music from Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, and SiriusXM (subscriptions may be required).

  • Pandora: With Pandora you can explore a variety of music content. Simply enter the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and it will quickly scan its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings - new and old, well known and completely obscure - to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.
  • Rhapsody: A Rhapsody subscription lets you listen to anything and everything in its music catalog (currently over 10 million songs). With a subscription, you don't have to worry about paying for individual songs, ripping CDs, or managing files. You can just sign in and start listening.
  • Napster: Napster is a  monthly music subscription service. You can search for particular tracks (by artist, album, or song) on Napster and register your favorite tracks.
  • SiriusXM: SiriusXM provides an unmatched lineup of original, exclusive programming. SiriusXM Internet Radio offers over 120 channels of the best commercial-free music and biggest talk personalities everywhere you go (subscription required).
  • vTuner: You can listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world.

Media Player: The Yamaha Aventage Series RX-A1010 lets you play music files stored on your computer via a network connection. MP3, WMA, AAC , WAV (up to 96kHz), and FLAC (up to 96kHz) audio files stored on your computer can be played through the RX-A1010 via its wired network connection. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the AV receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's on-screen menu (via HDMI). This unit can play back music files stored on the following music servers:

  • PC with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed
  • PC with DLNA/UPnP Certificate server software installed
  • NAS with DLNA/UPnP certification

DLNA 1.5/Windows 7 Certified: The Aventage Series RX-A1010 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. You can use your PC to play high-bit rate music content through your audio system, or use the RX-A1010 to browse and play music files on your hard drive.

Web Control: When connected to your network (with Internet connection) you can control the Yamaha RX-A1010 AV receiver with the web control screen displayed in your PC's web browser. You'll be able to control functions such as Zone2, Power On/Off, and Volume.

Note: Internet Explorer 7.x or 8.x is recommended for web browser.

Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates take approximately 15 minutes.

Note: The tested Yamaha RX-A1010 contained Firmware Version 1.02. RX-A1010 Firmware Updates are already available (as of August 2011).

USB/iPod Functions

USB Port: This unit is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy WAV (PCM format only), MP3, WMA, and AAC audio files from a USB MSC (mass-storage-class) memory device (such as a USB flash drive). This unit can recognize sampling frequencies of up to 48 kHz on a compatible USB storage device. This unit supports USB mass storage class devices formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32 (not compatible with USB HDDs). You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB MSC device.

Note: While listening to a song from a USB device, you can view a favorite video or photo from the receiver's monitor output.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The USB (type-A) port on the front-panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV Receiver, noise interference is minimized and sound quality is much better. iPod/iPhone digital connection means that the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the system, minimizing noise interference and allowing use of the DAC not in the iPod/iPhone, but in the system. This results in more precise sound reproduction. You can navigate your iPod/iPhone's music via the receiver's on-screen menu and remote control, or continue to use your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. You can browse your iPod/iPhone's music content via Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, or Composer. You can also control Repeat & Shuffle functions. Song/artist information and Album Art will display on your connected TV (via HDMI). Your iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (when powered on). The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following iPod/iPhone compatibility (as of Sept. 2011).

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the receiver and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

iPod Universal Dock (with video): With the optional YDS-12 iPod Universal Dock (022YDS12, sold separately), you can connect your iPod digital music player to the RX-A1010 and control audio/video playback using the remote control. Most fourth generation and later iPods (Click Wheel) are compatible. Video from your iPod and album art can be displayed on a connected TV monitor.

Multi-Zone Capability

Multi-Zone: The Yamaha AV receiver allows you to configure a multi-zone audio/video system, so you can enjoy to a multichannel audio/video source in the Main Zone and a stereo audio/video source in the second zone (Zone 2). By connecting an infrared signal receiver/emitter to the unit's Remote In/Out jacks, you can operate the receiver and external devices from Zone 2 with the supplied remote control.

Zone 2: The Zone2 feature allows you to set this receiver to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone and the second zone (Zone 2). The receiver has dedicated stereo preamp outputs for Zone 2, or the built-in amplifier can power speakers in the second zone connected to the Zone 2 speaker terminals. The analog video monitor outputs (component video, S-video, and composite video) can also be assigned to Zone 2, useful when you're using HDMI for the main room video.

  • Line Out: By using the RCA outputs on the AV receiver you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different stereo audio source in another room of your home. If you're using the Zone 2 RCA jacks, the output volume can be set to fixed or variable.
  • Speaker Out: By using the speaker-level outputs on the AV receiver you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different stereo audio source in the other room. When the receiver is powering speakers in Zone 2, the surround back speakers in the main room are turned off (limiting you to 5.1ch in the main room). The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by the AV receiver

Compatible Zone Sources: Only Tuner, analog (audio/video), USB, and Network audio sources can be sent to Zone 2. Unfortunately, a USB source and Ethernet source cannot be played back in different Zones at the same time.

Note: You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or different Network apps for different zones.

Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2.

Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. Both the Main Zone & Zone 2 play at the same volume level during Party mode. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home.

Tuner Functions

Built-in HD Radio Tuner: The RX-A1010 is equipped with an HD Radio tuner. HD Radio offers digital transmission with CD-quality sound from FM stations and analog FM quality from AM stations. In addition, it gives you program-associated data and the ability to tune to multiple programs (up to 8) at the same dial position. HD Radio broadcasting reaches approximately 95% of America's population, with over 2,500 radio stations available.

iTunes Tagging: The iTunes Tagging feature allows you to mark songs as they're played on an HD Radio station and transfer the artist/song data to your compatible iPod/iPhone, when connected via USB. Then when you sync the iPod/iPhone with your iTunes account you're given an option to purchase the songs; up to 50 can be saved.

40-Station Preset Tuning: The Aventage Series RX-A1010 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning).

Direct Tuning: You can directly tune in a frequency using the receiver's remote control.

Stereo/Monaural Modes: You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations.

Background Video: While listening to the radio, you can display your favorite videos or photos on your connected TV.

SIRIUS Satellite Ready: You can listen to SIRIUS Satellite Radio by connecting the SiriusConnect tuner (item number 607SCH1 or 220SCH2P, sold separately) to the RX-A1010's proprietary plug. SIRIUS Satellite Radio offers over 130 channels of music, news, sports, talk, and entertainment to choose from--all in digital quality. During SIRIUS playback you can display the channel number and name, category, artist name and song title, composer name, channel number and antenna reception level, or Soundfield program on the front panel.

Note: A subscription is required in order to receive SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI (Graphical User Interface): The RX-A1010 offers an on-screen menu system via any of its monitor outputs (HDMI, component, S-video, composite). This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. The on-screen display can show album art, provides a choice of various languages, and is visible over 3D images.

Note: You can select English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, or Russian for the receiver's on-screen text.

Shortcuts: You can register up to 40 of your favorite USB and network contents as shortcuts and access them directly from the receiver's on-screen menu.

Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

Hybrid Power Supply: Independent power supplies for the digital and analog circuit, resulting in less power consumption in the standby mode, and a more efficient power transformer.

Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable to 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote Control: The receiver comes with a multibrand wireless remote control. In addition to the receiver, the remote can control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

HDMI Control: The Yamaha Aventage Series AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. If your TV or other external components support HDMI control, you can use the remote controls of those devices to operate some of this unit's functions, and to synchronize this unit with the operation of those devices. You can use the following operations with the remote control of any of the connected HDMI Control compatible devices.

  • Power synchronization (On/Standby)
  • Volume control, including Mute
  • Changing the volume of the audio output signal device (either the TV or the receiver)

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the iPhone app.

AV Controller App: This AV Controller App (free) will turn your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad or Android device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. This App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands. You can browse content from all internally available sources such as Internet Radio, USB and AM/FM tuners. You can also control all AV receiver zones such as powering on and changing input for each zone. This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play, Stop and Forward.

  • AV Controller App for Apple: The free AV controller App for Apple is available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. It supports the iPod touch (2nd/3rd/4th gen), iPhone (2G/3G/3GS/4), or iPad with iOS4.0 or higher installed.
  • AV Controller App for Android: The free AV controller App for your compatible Android device is available for download from the online Android Market. Requires Android 2.1 and up.

Note: You must have a wireless network in your home and the Yamaha AV receiver & Apple or Android device connected to the same network.

Remote Jacks: The receiver has remote input and remote output minijack (3.5mm) terminals for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.

12V Trigger Outputs: The RX-A1010 has two programmable mini-jack outputs (3.5mm) to send 12-Volt DC turn-on signals to other components that accept a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The triggers are programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone 2) or a specific source.

3rd Party Control: The AV receiver's RS-232C port provides seamless integration with a wide range of third-party home automation control systems.

Simply Awesome

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

This is an awesome unit. Crutchfield advisor recommended this unit as being the lowest-priced received to receive HD broadcasts but I found out after the purchase that the RX-A800 would also do this (at less than half the price!). Still, it works fantastic and will replace my trusty Sony 5.1 system I bought 11 years ago.

This unit is built like a tank (and weighs about at much), scales all input video to 1080i (the most my old, trusty Mitsubishi WS-55805 rear-projection TV can handle) and sounds absolutely awesome. I've had company check their phone because the ringing they heard (from the TV) sounded like it was coming from where they left their real phone!

The YPAO placement is dead-on and makes for an awesome listening experience. If you're walking around, doing housework, then push the "Party" mode button to make listening a joy throughout the house (even with the volume low!).

I haven't played with the internet connectivity yet or remote operation with my Droid X, but if it works as well with those as it does with the included remote then I'm sure I'll be just as satisfied.

Highly recommended
Pros:
Everything. HD Radio in the home is something to behold!
Cons:
Price. Only stores 40 FM radio stations (auto-programmed all 40 hear in Houston with more remaining). No auto-presets (Search) for AM stations.

Crutchfield Customer Review

This receiver replaced a Yamaha receiver, RX-650, which was about 9 years old. We were happy with the first one so choosing another Yamaha was an easy choice. We have been learning the receiver for the past 3 weeks and are very pleased. The set up was quick and easy, HDMI makes a world of difference with the cable clutter. We chose this receiver because of the zone 2 or party feature which our old receiver had but was more difficult to use.
Pros:
HDMI, Party or zone 2, ease of set up
Cons:
none so far
