Yamaha AVENTAGE®: Premium design and performance

Yamaha designed their AVENTAGE series of receivers from the ground up with sound quality as the top priority. They paid attention to the little details that add up to better performance — from a solidly built double-bottomed chassis, to separate power supplies for digital and analog circuitry. And to top it off, AVENTAGE receivers are backed by a three-year warranty.

The RX-A1020 boasts other nice engineering touches like a symmetrical amplifier layout with a center-mounted transformer to reduce the signal path. And dual heat sinks keep the receiver cooler for greater noise-reduction and efficiency.

AirPlay® moves your iTunes® library front and center

Built-in Apple AirPlay lets you wirelessly stream music from your iTunes collection directly to your Yamaha receiver, either from a networked computer or right from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®. Not only do you get a fast and convenient way to listen to your favorites, but anyone in your home can stream from their player to share their latest find. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network.

Free remote app for Apple® and Android™

Yamaha A/V Controller app

The free Yamaha A/V Controller app gives you easy touchscreen control over the RX-A1020 with your smartphone or tablet.

A network connection to this receiver also lets you use your Apple or Android device as a Wi-Fi remote. Just download the free Yamaha A/V Controller app to your smartphone or tablet, and you can use the intuitive touchscreen interface to control the receiver.

Enjoy HD Radio™ and your record collection

The RX-A1020 gives you access to music sources that most receivers don't. It has a built-in HD Radio tuner so you can enjoy digital high-definition programs from your favorite area HD stations. With 40 memory presets, there's plenty of space to save regular and multi-cast stations that you just can't get without this special tuner. Plus, you can enjoy the vinyl resurgence and your record collection by connecting a turntable for hours of warm-sounding analog music.

Your broadband network delivers a vast variety of entertainment options

The RX-A1020's Ethernet port opens the door to a world of fresh, new listening options. Thousands of Internet radio stations from every corner of the world are at your fingertips. And music files streamed from your networked PC are just a touch away. The possibilities are endless.

Flexible connecting options to meet your needs

This seven-channel receiver gives you two channels that can be used for back surround channels. So when your action movie includes a sneak attack from the rear, you'll hear it coming. And when you're enjoying that favorite live concert CD the rear soundstage makes it really come alive.

If you stick with just five speakers in your home theater, there are other choices available. The back surround channels can be reassigned to send extra power to bi-ampable front speakers. You'll enjoy better clarity and dynamic range, perhaps as never before. Or if you'd simply like to hear music in another room, those extra powered outputs can be used for a pair of speakers in your favorite lounge or work area, entertaining you while others enjoy the movie in your living room.

Set up like a pro in a fraction of the time

Yamaha's auto-calibration system provides easy, precise home theater setup. Plug in the included microphone and place it in your favorite seat. The RX-A1020 quickly analyzes the size, distance, and frequency response of every speaker in your system, adjusting the settings for each one individually. In minutes, your system is fine-tuned for optimum performance with your specific speakers and room.

Today's feature-packed home theater receivers do so much that you can find yourself lost in a maze of on-screen menus. The RX-A1020 lets you sidestep the confusion: Four "SCENE" buttons in the center of the front panel give you easy one-touch access to common choices like watching a Blu-ray movie or listening to a CD. Just hit a button and the receiver switches to the correct input and settings. And the 'A1020 adds eight additional SCENE selections via the graphic user interface.

    Audio Features

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

    • Aluminum Front Panel: The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
    • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
    • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality.
    • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
    • Hybrid Power Supply: Independent power supplies for the digital and analog circuit, resulting in less power consumption in the standby mode, and a more efficient power transformer.

Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.

192kHz/24-bit Burr Brown DACs: The Yamaha RX-A1020 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.

Low-Jitter PLL Circuitry: The Yamaha AV receiver utilizes low-jitter PLL circuitry to help optimize sound imaging. The result is a more dynamic sound with greater detail and less distortion.

7.2ch AV Receiver: The Yamaha RX-A1020 AV Receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 110 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20khz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability. The RX-A1020 also includes dual LFE (mono-subwoofer) outputs for connecting a powered sub.

Power Amp Assign: The built-in seven channel amplifier can be programmed to power various speaker configurations.

    • 7ch Normal:  Seven speakers are powered in the main room - Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R (or Front Presence L/R). The receiver will automatically switch power between the Surround Back and Front Presence speakers.
    • 7ch+1Zone: Seven speakers in the main room (front, center, surround, and surround back) and two speakers in a second zone are connected to the receiver; when the second zone is turned on, the surround back speakers turn off.
    • 5ch Bi-amp: Five speakers are powered in the main room (Front L/R, center, and Surround L/R) with the surround back amplifier channels reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers.
    • 5ch Bi-amp+SB: The receiver powers five speakers in the main room (front, center, and surround) with the surround back amplifier channels used to bi-amp the front speakers. Using the receiver's multichannel preamp outputs, the surround back speakers are powered by an external amp.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for the Front, Center, Surround, Surround Back, and Zone 2/F. Presence/Bi-Amp/Extra speaker terminals. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. These terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs and a collar surrounding them prevents the use of spade connectors.

Note: You can select 8 ohms or 6 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application. The amplifier supports 4- to 8-ohm Front speakers; and 6- to 8-ohm Center, Surround, Surround Back, Zone 2/F. Presence/Bi-Amp/Extra speakers.

Bi-Amp Speaker Connections: This receiver allows you to reassign the surround back amplifier channels to make bi-amp connections (compatible speakers required). A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier.

Presence Speakers: One pair of speaker terminals (Zone 2/F. Presence/Bi-Amp/Extra Speakers) can be used for Front Presence speakers, driving a pair of speakers in a second zone, or bi-amping the front speakers. The Presence speakers supplement the sound from the front speakers with extra ambient effects produced by Cinema DSP. These effects include sounds that the filmmakers intended to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambience. The Presence speakers should be placed at the front of the room 1-3' outside of the front speakers and at least 6' off the floor. When the Presence speakers are engaged, the surround back speakers are disabled.

YPAO R.S.C. (Reflect Sound Control): YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds. Yamaha's YPAO-R.S.C. system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each.
    • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel.
    • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel.
    • EQ: Each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of three target settings before running the setup.
      • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
      • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
      • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
    • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.

Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-A1020 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha A/V receivers offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes:
      • Panorama: sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect
      • Dimension: adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room
      • Center Width: moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

CINEMA DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 23 CINEMA DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie
    • Entertainment Soundfields: Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Music Video, Recital/Opera
    • Music Soundfields: Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Hall in Amsterdam, Church in Freiburg, Church in Royaumont, Chamber, Village Vanguard, Warehouse Loft, Cellar club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, 7ch Stereo

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

CINEMA DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-A1020 A/V receiver offers three proprietary Yamaha CINEMA modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using Presence Speakers, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • CINEMA DSP 3D: The actually measured soundfield data in recorded soundtracks contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of theses sound images so that it can create the accurate and intensive stereoscopic soundfield in your listening room. CINEMA DSP 3D does this by using the receiver's Presence (height) Speakers.
    • Virtual CINEMA DSP: Virtual CINEMA DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual CINEMA DSP lets you enjoy the effects of CINEMA DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center/presence speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual CINEMA DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • SILENT CINEMA: SILENT CINEMA makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of CINEMA DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

Virtual Presence Speaker: Virtual Presence Speaker mode provides the 3D sound effect without actual front presence speakers. It creates virtual presence speakers from the receiver's front speakers, center speakers, and surround speakers, which brings you into a stereoscopic soundfield.

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-A1020 offers to HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Pure Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front-panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel analog sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-A1020 A/V receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) automatically adjusts the dynamic range in relation to the volume, useful at low volume. The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Volume Adjustments: The Yamaha RX-A1020 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6 dB to +6 dB in 0.5 dB increments.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A1020 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs/Output: The Yamaha AV receiver is equipped with four optical digital inputs (3 rear/1 front), three coaxial digital inputs (rear), and one optical digital output (rear).
    • 7.1ch Analog Input: This unit has a discrete 7.1-channel analog input for connecting DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players or an external decoder.
    • 7.2ch Preamp Outputs: The A/V receiver features 7.2-channel pre-amp outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers.
    • Phono Input: The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a Phono input (MM), so you can connect your turntable and listen to your vinyl records with high-quality sound
    • Headphone Jack: The Yamaha RX-A1020 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphone, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs.  Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

    Video Features

HDMI (v.1.4): 1080p HDMI (v.1.4) with 3D and Audio Return Channel (8 In/2 Out) deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable. The two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously. HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide you with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or A/V receiver and a video monitor, such as a High Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks can be used for 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats. The HDMI 1.4 jacks also support 1080p and 4K video signals; as well as Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, 24 Hz refresh rates, and auto Lip-Sync compensation.

4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-A1020 is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale video signals from analog-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 1020p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K resolution.

Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing: In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally.

3D Ready: The Yamaha RX-A1020 AV receiver supports 3D HDMI pass-through from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). 3D provides a more engaging audio and video consumer experience. Note that special eyewear may be required for viewing 3D content

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

HDMI Standby Through Mode: When the RX-A1020 is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's not need to turn on the A/V receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.

x.v.Color: The AV receiver supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Yamaha receiver also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed.  For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen GUI: The RX-A1020 offers an advanced on-screen menu (GUI) system via its HDMI output. This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. Yamaha's latest graphical user interface (GUI) has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable status bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, Japanese, German, Russian, or Chinese. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings.

Zone 2: The Zone 2 feature allows you to set this receiver to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone and the second zone (Zone 2). The receiver has dedicated stereo RCA outputs for Zone 2, or the built-in amplifier can be configured to power speakers in the second zone connected to the Extra Speaker terminals. By using the RCA outputs on the AV receiver you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different stereo audio source in another room of your home. By using the speaker-level outputs on the AV receiver you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different stereo audio source in the other room. When the receiver is powering speakers in Zone 2, the surround back speakers in the main room are turned off (limiting you to 5.1ch in the main room). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Yamaha receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Zone Sources: You can select the following input sources for Zone 2.
      • Analog Audio Inputs
      • AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone)
      • USB (including iPod/iPhone)
      • AirPlay
      • Internet Radio (vTuner)
      • DLNA/Media Player contents
    • Incompatible Zone Sources: Optical/coaxial digital and HDMI audio sources are not output to Zone 2. You cannot output any video signal to Zone 2.

Note: Unfortunately, a USB source (including iPod/iPhone) and Network connected sources (Internet Radio/Media Player) cannot be played back in different Zones at the same time.

Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. Both the Main Zone & Zone 2 play at the same volume level during Party mode. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home.

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.

Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable to 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

    Remote Control

Multibrand Remote Control: The receiver comes with a multibrand wireless remote control. In addition to the receiver, the remote can control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

HDMI Control: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. If your TV or other external components support HDMI control, you can use the remote controls of those devices to operate some of this unit's functions, and to synchronize this unit with the operation of those devices. You can use the following operations with the remote control of any of the connected HDMI Control compatible devices.

    • Power synchronization (On/Standby)
    • Volume control, including Mute
    • Changing the volume of the audio output signal device (either the TV or the receiver)

AV Controller App: This AV Controller App (free) will turn your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad or Android device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. This App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands. You can browse content from all internally available sources such as Internet Radio, USB and AM/FM tuners. You can also control all AV receiver zones such as powering on and changing input for each zone. This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play, Stop and Forward. In addition, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.

    • AV Controller App for Apple: The free AV controller App for Apple is available for download from the Apple iTunes App Store. It supports the iPod touch, iPhone , or iPad with iOS 4.2 or higher installed.
    • AV Controller App for Android: The free AV controller App for Android is available for download from the online Android Market. Requires Android 2.1 and up.

Note: You must have a wireless network in your home and the Yamaha AV receiver & Apple or Android device connected to the same network.

Remote Connections: The RX-A1020 offers a variety of remote connections.

    • Remote Jacks: The receiver has remote input and remote output minijack (3.5mm) terminals for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
    • 12V Trigger Outputs: The RX-A1020 has two programmable mini-jack outputs (3.5mm) to send 12-Volt DC turn-on signals to other components that accept a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The triggers are programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone 2) or a specific source.
    • RS-232C Port: The AV receiver's RS-232C port provides seamless integration with a wide range of third-party home automation control systems.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was purchased from Crutchfield to replace a 9 year old Onkyo WRT receiver that did not have hdmi inputs. The Yamaha rxa 1020 exhibited far better sound, a full and complete sound spectrum and great custom adjust-ability. I purchased the rxa 1020 from Crutchfield and received great service all of the way around. I found that for the size of my room, listening preference (powerful overdriven sound with plenty of reserves in the tank), that the rxa 1020 was just not quite powerful enough. I spoke with Crutchfield representatives about my feelings and they allowed me to return it and upgrade. Crutchfield is an exemplary company that sets itself apart from everyone else, they listen, advis and do their best. I just can't say enough good things about the experience. I hope that you find the same quality of service as I did in your dealings with Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, customization, ease of use

Cons: could use some more power

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading the manual, I found the RX-A1020 to be easy to setup. Yamaha's auto-calibration system seemed to work great. It even told me that I had the surround speakers on the wrong channel and that that a speaker was out of phase. Still testing out the system. One note of concern, I have the TV audio out going to the receiver's Audio 1, and my CD player going to Audio 2. While selecting Audio 2, with the CD player, off it seemed like the Audio 1 was bleeding thru. I haven't rechecked that since I corrected the speaker connections after the auto-calibration.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced an older Pioneer Elite AVR, the Yamaha 1020 is much cleaner sounding. The video up scaling is great on DTV, 1080i to 1080p. The only thing I don't care for is the way it handles HDMI control on a Plasma without ARC or control.

    Excellent choice!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cooper at Crutchfield guided to this receiver as a replacement for my Onkyo . The sound and picture provided now through the Yamaha is far superior to any I have experienced formerly. A great choice and total satisfaction! fortunately had the help installing of a friend who installed home theater systems for a company in Phoenix. He made sure that the sound thru my Bose accoustimass 10 speakers is fully utilized.

Pros: sound and picture is superior to my Onkyo which burned out.....high-end piece of equipment for a reasonable price.

Cons: no printed manual with receiver and need Ethernet cable for full capabilities.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a Yamaha RX-V1065 due to a circuit board malfunction with the HDMI output jack. The setup on the 1020 was close to the 1065 but had much more features and functionality. It did take me somewhat longer to get the receiver the way I wanted, but by this being the case I came to learn more about the unit.

Pros: Hi-end everything you could ever want I believe in a home theater receiver.

Cons: No printed manual. I downloaded the pdf. file to my tablet which made it easier to some degree, but not as efficient I would say as having a hard copy in your hands.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

third yamaha receiver ive owned in 40 + years, first one oi shorted out the speaker wires and never did find anyone that could fix it to last longer than a year or two. second one, a RX-V620, still works perfect and sounds assume. with everything being HDMI i figured it was time to upgrade, im really glad i did. the technology has advanced a lot since my old RX-V620. Pandora, internet radio, server, and much much more. this receiver has plenty of features for you to enjoy and ofcourse the quality sound of yamaha. one thing though, if you have any problems dont bother calling Crutchfield, seems the tech is beyond them, call yamaha. i made the mistake of calling Crutchfield more than a few times about setting this unit up and every time i was given the wrong information, oh well they try. only had to call yamaha once and that was it.

Pros: everything, plus Crutchfield has a great price and return policy.

Cons: would of like it to have 145 watts.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my fourth surround receiver, first Yamaha and first time the microphone and speaker setup worked without any tweaks! It even told me I had a speaker out of phase. Hands down better setup and sound than the 2 yr old "broken" Onkyo it replaced. -

Pros: Great sound, easy setup, bad remote made the decision to go with a harmony remote easy

Cons: Remote: Too many buttons Remote: Seriously? Look up codes on the CDRom? How about a web site?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit. Has a lot more flexibility than I ever imagined. Very thorough system. It can handle anything from Phonograph to Blue Ray and Satellite receivers. Great Sound through Klipsch and JBL Speakers. It sounds good right out of the box but improves greatly after the YPAO mic setup is performed. Much cleaner subwoofer sounds after setup.

Pros: Very versatile handles a variety of inputs and outputs. Extremely clear sound.

Cons: A little complicated to setup. Must read manual thoroughly. Subtle remarks regarding setup become very important.

Big Improvement from my prior Onkyo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A definite buy. Tremendously glad I bought this receiver amplifier. It serves Mac Mini's media collection (in iTunes served to the Yamaha through Plex Media Server) through a ROKU3 to my Polk speakers/SWoofer superiorly and pleasantly. Such an advance in overall function! I am satisfied with the value here. Crutchfield gave me great service.

Pros: I don't use cable/dish for media but use DSL to receive the media we need (international news, PBS, Comedy Central). My ROKU hooked up nicely to the Yamaha; they work as a great pair, and I control them through the excellent Yamaha app on my iPhone when I need to change volume on the Yamaha or the input source ((between the ROKU and the Mac). Nice app interface. Great sound (I have a lot of ripped classical CDs that I serve with Plex, itunes through Mac, or lexcellent Net Radio with Yamaha.

Cons: Just One, and it could be big: the Yamaha networks very nicely, but it requires ethernet hard cabling. Luckily I already had that in the wall to connect with my network router. I suspect these units were sold as a nice special as the replacement model is going to have WiFi networking, which might be worth waiting for for many potential buyers.

    Yamaha makes EXTRA ORDINARY receivers

Written By Ron, Glenmont NY on Monday, April 21, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In 1986 I purchased a Yamaha receiver, it still works great. 5 months ago a I purchased a Yamaha 3030. I liked it so much I just purchased the Yamaha 1020. For the price it's a real bargain since it has almost all the features and capabilities of the Yamaha 3030. So what is so great about it. First, it is well made and bullet proof. It will last for years and has wonderful sound. It is powerful and flexible. I have mine hooked up so that it can power a 5.1 speaker system and a separate set of speakers in a remote location. This means that you can watch a movie in one room and listen to CD, FM radio, airplay, apple TV radio or iTunes, internet radio, phono in another location. With the Yamaha iPhone (or Android) app I can control all functions easily from any location on my home network. Don't forget the legendary soundscapes and equalization of the Yamaha. This has always been a strong suite of Yamaha equipment. You equalize the system with a supplied microphone. You can do this for your favorite listening location, or you can average a few locations where listening is common. Once this is done you can tweak the sound and adjust it in any way you wish, or simply go with the defaults. Once this is done the receiver allows you to mimic the sound stage of many venues and shape the sound for various musical types. You can also adjust dialog levels. It can become as complicated or as simple as you wish. Fuss with it each time you listen, or not. Up to you.

Pros: It has very detailed instructions and can be customized to fit any situation. You run all your equipment through it and you can probably get the receiver remote and or the app to control everything you own in one place. If you get stuck setting it up or have questions, Yamaha support is over the top helpful. They will spend as much time with you as you need on the phone answering your questions and explaining how to set things up. If you stump them, they will get back to you with the answer

Cons: To enjoy full capabilities you MUST hard wire the system to your network with Ethernet cable. Once you do this you can take advantage of the app to control the receiver from your phone, you can use internet radio, pandora, airplay etc. By the way.... Internet radio is incredible. You must also hook the receiver up to your TV with HDMI, other wise it is hard to use. This is because the on TV screen menus are essential to augment the receiver's display. I love this receiver. This is my third Yamaha receiver and they never let me down in terms of features and quality. Super quality for the money.

Pros: Easy to use, great sound, and the HDMI passive switching is terrific.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Awesome sound, but takes some effort to set up. At first I could not get any control or Airplay to work with my ipad. The solution was to upgrade the firmware to v1.6 via the USB port. You simply download the latest version from the Yamaha website (follow the instructions) to a USB fob, then manually upload to the receiver. Takes about 15 minutes to load, and then everything works great. I can control with the outstanding AV app, and even play Spotify thru Airplay as well. Best performance I ever heard!

Pros: Well made. Plenty of power. Lots of tone options

Cons: Takes a bit of effort to configure

This receiver is, by far, more than I expected. Although, learning your way around is not easy, it will take you to a higher level in sound production and equipment integration.

Pros: Small and easy to placed.

Cons: Manual needs to be printed (200 pages) in order for you to learn the whereabouts of everything!

Having tried a few different receivers over the past few years, I've gone back to the first brand receiver I owned - Yamaha!!! Yamaha has done it again, delivering an outstanding product with outstanding build quality & absolutely stellar sound quality. Feature-packed & built like a tank, the RX-A1020 is hands-down one of the finest pieces of A/V equipment in my rack....

Cons: As with most A/V equipment these days, a printed user manual would've been nice, but a local copy center works....

This is the best receiver I have ever had. It is replacing an older Yamaha model, and it is leaps and bounds better as far as features and sound quality. It was easy to set up and I keep finding new features that are awesome. I would recommend this receiver to anyone that is looking for quality sound and multiple music source options.

Pros: Easy to set up. Excellent power and sound delivery. Features galore.

Cons: It's a heavy receiver. Make sure you have a sturdy entertainment stand.

I purchased this to replace a 12 year old Onkyo that was on its way out. I've only had it for a few weeks now, but so far am quite happy with it. The free shipping from Crutchfield was incredibly fast in getting it to me and the for the few questions I had in setting it up the tech support was very helpful.

Pros: Works well, sounds great. Very solid piece of electronics

Cons: no printed manual, just CD pdf form is a little bit of a pain.

Easy set up right out of the box, sounds fantastic, more power than I had imagined. Looks great, has all the features I can use. Don't even know what half of them are yet.

    Pros: All the above.

Cons: Like a lot of others noted, remote is a bit awkward with lots of buttons I don't think I'll ever need. Fortunately, I have a logitech universal remote to take care of that problem. I also didn't like the flat sounding phono input so I opted for a cambridge preamp which took care of that as well.

After much research into home theater receivers, I chose Yamaha. Overall, the RX-A1020 is a great value. Loads of features. This model has hook up for a turntable which was important to me. The manual is a little intimidating but I managed my way through it!

Pros: Lots of features. Great value.

    Cons: Manual needs improvement.

    Better than Sony and Onkyo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaces a fairly new Onkyo that stopped producing any sound and an older Sony that I was still using since it would pass stereo through HDMI and power 5.1 speakers while the newer Onkyo did not. I use the receiver to power an HDMI network that serves three TVs, two of which do not have separate sound systems. The HDMI output from the Yamaha works perfectly for this. Thanks for Crutchfield staff double checking this for me before purchase.

Pros: Nice clean sound and enough ability to tamper with it to boost voices for TV watching. Compatible with Apple TV and plays nicely with my Sony PC's HDMI output, which I've had trouble with in the past.

Cons: Does not have a dynamic range limiting setting to completely avoid the ads with the screamers being louder than the drama you were just watching.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just purchased my first home, and I really wanted some tunes and a small home theater system wrapped up in one simple system. I've always had an ear for Yamaha receivers, and based on other people's reviews I figured I'd pull the trigger on the RX-A1020. Crutchfield had this item on sale w/ free shipping, and this item was originally priced at a M.S.R.P. of $1199.95... Essentially half-off making this a no-brainer deal.

I am in the process of getting all of the installation pieces purchased to make for a clean install, and have yet to turn on the unit. I will also have to modify my current entertainment system as this unit is deeper than I had anticipated, but this is my fault for not checking the units dimensions against the dimensions of my entertainment center.

Pros: Prices and style! Very sleek and clean looking unit. User's Manual is on a CD so I don't have to thumb through 90 pages written in 10 different languages covering three different models.

Cons: The User's Manual is on a CD. This isn't a giant issue as I have a laptop if needed but my PC is in my "home office", and obviously not in the same room. I also knew this small fault when purchasing the unit so I really can't complain. I'm just noting it, but at least I don't have to read or lug around a 90 page User's Manual written in 10 different languages covering 3 different models.

Pros: I just got the receiver connect this week end. So far it is working out to be a fine receiver. HD radio was easy to get working and with HDMI connections , the home theater went together easy.

Cons: I am having problems getting the app on iPad connected to the 1020 receiver.

Extremely pleased with my purchase and Crutchfield. The Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1020 replaced a 12-year old Onkyo TR700 receiver and is a noticeable improvement in sound, features and ease of set up. The receiver layout and connections were well thought out. Time will tell; however, the apparent build quality leads me to believe it will provide many years of trouble service.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of connection and set-up through the TV display.

    Cons: None to mention.

    Another Great Yamaha Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace an 11 year-old Yamaha, which still sounded great, but had no HDMI connectivity. I also wanted something with more power, since my highest listening priority is music, and with Apple compatibility. I could not be happier with my choice. Paired with my Def Tech tower speakers, this Yamaha makes my CDs and albums sound the best they have ever sounded. The clean 110W of power produce music that is simply incredible. Movie soundtracks in 5.1 sound great also, by the way. I think this receiver could be set up a lot more quickly than I did it, using the simplest procedures and all the defaults; however, I chose to go through all the details. This might be a bit painful for some people, but I'm an old school guy with many fond memories of setting up the stereo system in every new dorm room or apartment or house. I enjoy going through the process. The YPAO system worked flawlessly for me, but I defined the speaker sizes first (after reading some other comments). Everyone has their own way of using their equipment, and I like to get things set with all the options just right to fit my usage patterns. I was able to do just that. The A1020 has so many configuration options that I would find it hard to believe someone could come up with a use case that could not be configured. Finally, the PDF manual was well indexed and easy to navigate using a laptop. I'm glad Yamaha didn't kill a tree to print it.

Pros: Great sound, great sound, great sound. And nice configuration options. Can't beat the price.

    Cons: None

I am replacing my 6 years old Onkyo receiver. My needs are: 2 HDMI outs, more than 5 HDMI in's, Airplay. able to play my pc music , HD radio, 2 sub-woofer out, independent second zone. So far it is meeting all my needs. My set up are: Goldenear supersat 50 x 3 , Speakercrafts in wall surround x 4 , Hsu Research sub-woofer, Panasonic 55 inches plasma, Epson front projector, Elite motor screen. xb360, oppo blueray, att u-verse, tvpad, pioneer multiregion dvd The only set back was setting up the airplay, pc etc. It took a few days to figure it out., but once set up I am very happy with the result. I think the sound is better than my old Onkyo, but this is subjective as I did not do a AB comparison. The surround effects is definitely better than Onkyo. This is my third receiver purchase from Crutchfield and delivery is very fast

    Pros: All the features mentioned

Cons: A little difficulty in setting up Airplay etc, but the problem is dealing with my pc and not with the unit. Would be nice to have a You Tube video etc to help me. So, I did not deduct any stars from this unit.

This receiver can do it all and then some. I replaced my 15+ year old Onkyo receiver so it was a very big jump in technology.

I have actually fully replaced my entire home theater system including speakers. I am using Klipsch 52 II series all the way around with this receiver at the moment I only have the front three hooked up with a set of Bose Acustimass surround. This receiver adjusted the surround speakers to actually work very will with movies I can now hear them way better then with the old system. I can not wait to have all speakers running which should be in a week or so. As I said this is just one piece of the entire home theater being redone. I read a ton of reviews on a great many receivers and at the $699 price This one was the best bang for the buck. Sure I could have spent more for a higher end system with a 9.2 setup but reality is this one was less then half the price of that and lets be realistic 9.2 is extremely rare on blue rays at the moment, actually, I have yet to see one come out so why spend more for something you wont be using.

I read a couple reviews here as well that complain about not having a manual other then on disk... Get with the times its 2014 and paper manuals are out why waste the paper and help preserve trees. If you want a paper manual its real simple print the thing out. Not me Ill stick to the PDF version.

So far this receiver has been top notch.

Pros: Price and all the features that i have yet to use but plan too.

    Cons: Nothing of note.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this receiver based on running multiple zones, ease of use, power, input/outputs, AirPlay and availability of app control from devices. It does all of these and more. Setup was fairly straightforward, took more time to rearrange the cabinet and wires than the setup the actual device. Sound quality is good, plenty of power for my setup (DefTech 600) as well as driving zone 2 simultaneously across the house. App control is pretty good, but still a few kinks that Yamaha needs to work out. All of this plus the price makes it a no-brainer while it lasts. I was considering other models with similar features for $500 more and haven't noticed the extra weight in my pockets bothering me one bit.

Pros: Multi Zone, AirPlay, Easy setup and use. Control Apps for Apple and Kindle. Nice set of inputs (RBG and HDMI)

Cons: Yamaha App control could be a little bit more streamlined. It works fine, but causes some temporary issues for people using zone 1 if you are controlling zone 2 using the app. I get a few "stop it" comments from across the house.

very pleased, first time with two prior receivers and one prior sub plus new one one year ago that i have been able to adjust properly.also i am pleased with the mellow sound and true fidelity.i am not very compitent in these matters but i did find the manual maddning 4-5 refferals on one subject many different times. i am still working on the many features but mainly winging it or forgetting certain things . 150 pages to understand as well as copy is too much!!!

Pros: excellent sound quality, good remote, overall quality, good back panel. good Crutchfield. support! !!

Cons: bad manual . should not have to run 150 pages on my copier for an excessevly complicated manual. fm setup seemed to be more difficult then it should be.

    Nice surprise!

Written By Smith, Arlington, VA on Monday, March 10, 2014

I had an Onkyo receiver for several years and loved it - but its HDMI board died, so I replaced it with another Onkyo. When ITS board died last month, I decided it was time to switch brands. I looked around online, and the Yamahas seemed to get great reviews. Crutchfield was offering the Aventage RX-A1020 at a great price (it's being replaced by a new model), so I decided to give it a try. What a nice surprise it has been! Setup was a breeze, and the sound quality and speaker balance are significantly better than those my Onkyos offered. It runs cooler than the Onkyos, also.

Pros: Easy setup. Love the second zone's independent controls.

Cons: The USB port for connecting an iPod is BEHIND the drop-down front-panel door - so, when using an iPod, you'll need to leave the door open. Looks sloppy to me. Instead, I connected red/white composite plugs to my old Onkyo iPod dock and plugged it into one of the composite inputs on the back of the RX-A1020. It looks much neater.

    Sweet power!

Super power and numerous (perhaps too numerous) functions I tried the onkyo 626 and elite v43 before trying this one out. I have some power hungry speakers and the 1020 fed my beasts!

Pros: Power power power. Net radio

Cons: This and all receivers need an hdmi connected tv to fully set up. Which is complete BS! I wish apple would be simpler to run too many steps involved

    Overall, an amazing AVR.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome, I originally bought this for mainly music play and I must say it has really brought my video's alive. Lots of my pros and cons can be opinionated. Lots and lots of features and all work great - HD radio, USB, pandora, sirusXM, DLNA, and turntable compatible. The Android app works amazing, i'm able to: change input, volume, preset (2ch stereo, 5 channel), and play music from my device from anywhere in my house, very cool. This thing has all pre-outs available which will be great down the road when or if I want to upgrade! I usually run 5.1 for video and 2.1 for music so the internal amps are good enough for me now and they get plenty of power.

My Setup: Yamaha RX-A1020 Bi-Amped Polk RTi A3 bookshelf (L & R) Pre-out Polk PSW125 Sub Polk blackstone TL150 (Center and SL & SR) 14 Guage wire banana plugs to AVR bare wire to speakers.

Pros: Pumps out great sound even with low quality movies (mp3 encoded) Presets are good and really add's some cool effects (like reverb to a specific hall) Quick reference directions give you everything you need, they save paper by giving you the manual on CD. (only had to use the CD to connect the remote to my TV) Front panel has easy to get to headphone port, component, HDMI, USB, YPAO mic and full controls!

Cons: YPAO is easy to use, but is not as accurate as expected. Still manually edited levels. Font panel doesn't have a "Line In" port for a 3.5" jack. Remote is so-so, but it works. Android app doesn't allow you forward the sound output to the receiver so the music file must be saved to your device to play. For example, I cant stream a youtube video on my phone to the receiver for sound without a physical connection.
