Raising the bar for home theater

Feature-packed receivers are wonderful. But attention to build quality and design can elevate a receiver's performance from good to great. That's the strength of Yamaha's AVENTAGE receivers like the RX-A1040. It offers sound quality that can coax refreshing levels of detail and punch out of your home theater speakers. Plus, there is no shortage of outstanding features: built-in Wi-Fi, online and digital music options, 4K video upscaling, app and web browser control, and multi-room audio and video capability all help you put this receiver's thoughtful design to good use.

Wi-Fi offers a wide range of wireless music options

If you've never connected a receiver to your wireless home network, you may not realize how much music you're missing out on. Built-in Wi-Fi makes the RX-A1040 a snap to integrate with your network. Once you're connected, you can listen to free Pandora® Internet radio as well as free radio streams from hundreds of stations around the world. If you're a subscriber to Spotify®, SiriusXM, or Rhapsody, you can enjoy their seemingly endless music choices. Got a computer or networked hard drive loaded with music? DLNA compatibility allows this receiver to tap into your collection wirelessly, so you never have to touch another CD again. Finally, if you're an Apple® user, AirPlay lets you listen wirelessly from your iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®.

Audio and video in two rooms

One of the benefits of the 'A1040's seven-channel amplifier is powering speakers in multiple rooms. There are a total of nine speaker outputs on this receiver. That means you can connect a 7.2-channel system in your home theater and still have two more speaker outputs left over. The receiver can automatically reassign the back surround channels to Zone 2 speakers. The family can enjoy a movie in 5.1-channel surround sound in the home theater while you listen to your digital music library out on the deck. Plus, the second HDMI output can be independently selected for watching a different movie or show in two rooms simultaneously. This is perfect for adding a TV to a bedroom without having to rent another cable box or buy a second Blu-ray player.

Watch different movies or shows on different TVs simulatneously.

Built on sound principles

Excellent sound quality is the guiding principle behind Yamaha's AVENTAGE receivers. Low-jitter PLL circuitry reduces timing jitter from digital sources, for accurate playback and precise stereo imaging. The symmetrical power amp layout isolates the circuitry for the left and right channels, for a high signal-to-noise ratio and a wide soundstage for stereo music listening. The aluminum front panel, rigid chassis, and extra center foot on the receiver's base help to further eliminate unwanted resonance and distortion. And the audiophile-quality ESS Sabre digital-to-analog converters decode the latest audio formats while revealing more detail in music and movies soundtracks.

Don't forget about picture quality

Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A1040 with built-in Wi-Fi

Download Yamaha's free remote app on your smartphone or tablet for easy Wi-Fi control of the receiver.

Great sound is only part of the AVENTAGE RX-A1040's story. Video upconversion can take analog or HDMI-connected sources as high as 4K for display on Ultra HD TVs. If you haven't yet taken the 4K plunge, you can also choose upscaling to 1080p HD to make old DVDs glisten with new life on your TV. There's also an extra HDMI input on the front panel. Connect a camera or camcorder, or a smartphone or tablet with Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) compatibility. This allows you to share music, videos, or photos through your home theater with stunning picture quality and rich, full sound.

Easy control with your smartphone or tablet

What's the best way to control this receiver's many features? Download the free Yamaha AV Controller app to your smartphone or tablet. Available for Apple or Android™, the app offers easy touchscreen control of the receiver's most critical functions — from switching sources and controlling the volume, to multi-zone playback control and selecting an Internet radio station. You can also use your tablet or PC's web browser to control the player and change settings.

Fairly easy to set up, but I did have to call Tech Support for help. Love the 2nd. zone. This receiver replaced a 10 year old Marantz which lacked HDMI & most of the bells & whistles the 1040 has. Love that HDMI.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This device replaces a Sansui AU-D9 Integrated amp, TU-S9 Tuner, RA-990 Reverb amp, and a ADC SS-30 graphic equalizer--all purchased some 33 years ago through the Overseas Catalog when I was in the Navy. Right now, I have only connected the audio capabilities (and have barely scratched the surface of even that). While I love my Sansui hardware, its volume potentiometer was causing static. I knew it was time to finally make the leap. I had reviewed many different Receivers and decided on the RX-A1040, which Crutchfield placed on special sale months ago. I routinely checked to verify it was still in stock, but one day several weeks ago, the web-site reported "low stock". I had to act fast. I pulled the trigger on the order and checked the web-site and observed the item had just become "out-of-stock". I must have gotten the last one. I've had a chance to listen to its audio only via Tuner and my iTouch (1st generation--which isn't really supposed to work, but it does). My Magnepan MG-12's never sounded so good. Looking forward to connecting the video portion of the receiver, but need longer than standard HDMI cables, as the receiver is not co-located with the TV/cabinet. I opted to place it in my stereo cabinet several feet away, and will have to resort to running HDMI through the floor and then over several feet and back up a different wall--and all of that sort of thing takes time.... One thing I know for sure, however: I made the right choice with this unit.

    Pros: Too many to mention....

Cons: My one complaint is that I do wish this unit possessed both switched and unswitched power outlets. It has neither. Because of weak FM signals where I live, I need an amplified antenna, and wish I had the means of turning on the antenna the same time the receiver is energized (the way it was on my former set up). As it is now, the antenna is on all the time--even when the receiver is off. I hope that doesn't mess up anything.

    Yamaha Receiver

The receiver was very easy to set up. It doesn't come with a manual but you really don't even need one if you have any experience hooking receivers up. It is easy to access everything quickly with the remote too. It has great sound and all the hookups that you could want. I did add an external blue tooth receiver that I recommend spending the extra money for.

    Pros: Easy Setup and programming

Cons: No Bluetooth but it can be added easily

Fairly easy to set up, but I did have to call Tech Support for help. Love the 2nd. zone. This receiver replaced a 10 year old Marantz which lacked HDMI & most of the bells & whistles the 1040 has. Love that HDMI.

Pros: Fairly easy to set up. Sound & picture very good. The HDMI cables left me with a lot of RCA, Composite Video, Optical & more, cables left over. Now that mess of wires is gone! The YPAO works really well. The speakers are set up perfectly especially the center. Love what you can get via WiFi but miss Bluetooth. Phono input without a pre amp, great. The Yamaha AV controller is very handy. There is more to this receiver that I have not figured out but everything I need is working fine.

Cons: Miss the Bluetooth. Would like a printed manual although the online one is easy to search but I'd have to run to another room to read it. I like to have the manual in front of me when setting things up.

    Really nice amp!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield rocks! This amp is amazing! I was overdue for an upgrade and this was a good choice. First the disclaimer, I'm not an audiophile, now that that's out of the way, the amp. I listen to music from my library on my network, FM radio, and streaming, with that in mind the HD radio was an important feature to me as that is a source of new music and frequent listening. HD is everything good you have ever heard about it, tune in to a station and hear the difference in sound when it's an HD station and the tuner switches to that level of quality! Shwing! The YPAO sound tuning rocks! One of my new speakers was wired incorrectly inside the speaker cabinet and the amp indicated it, which isn't really much of a miracle in this age of technology, but I still thought most impressive. The amp will tune to multiple listening locations and there is a noticeable difference when you either leave or enter that position. Movie sound is especially good, I used to use Closed Captioning for most movies, but the center channel tuning is so good and can be amped up so dialogue is more easily heard. Music from my online library has a new dimension that has me listening to music even more than I use to. If you're considering an upgrade I can't say enough good about this amp.

Pros: Sound quality, HD radio, YPAO, quality of amp, clean power, 7.1 for movies, 2nd room output, really great price considering the features, quality...

Cons: Haven't found a con yet, I really like this amp.

    Its good but....

It could have been a 5 star. Good mobile app control. Does a descent job with sound and picture quality. This thing doesnt have a bluetooth connectivity in it. I cant imagine a device like this without bluetooth. The AirPlay looses the connection in the middle of a song. USB connection was lost too couple of times, but not as compared to AirPlay.

Pros: Mobile App comes in very handy. Wifi makes it easy to listen into Pandora and Spotify Front USB port good surround sound easy set up

Cons: Mobile app sometime doesnt recognize the device No Bluetooth (this is big one for me) AIrPlay is not reliable little costly for its functions

    Great Home Theater Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this receiver for about 2 weeks now but I am extremely pleased! Prior to this I have owned a Denon, B&K reference 50 and a Harmon Kardon.

Pros: 1. Seven HDMI inputs! Man do I need them for cable, PS4, PS3, XboxOne, Xbox360, and an AppleTV. 2. Switching HDMI Ouptuts (2 provided) is excellent! I have a projector and an LCD depending on if I'm watching TV or movies. The ability on the remote to switch quickly between those displays is awesome! 3. HDMI passthru works as intended. If you don't want the stereo but still wanna watch TV, the receiver will pass through the HDMI of whatever the last input was before turning it off. That way I don't have to keep the receiver on when I'm just watching TV

Cons: 1. On screen menu options need more explanation. I need to dig through the manual to understand what options like 5CH+ZoneBP mean. I have had the hardest time trying to figure out how to setup my 12V trigger for my 7ch amp. 2. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn off the internal amp. I use an external B&K amp, so I'd like to use less power by disabling the built-in amp (my speakers don't accept bi-wire so that's not an option either) 3. Wish there was a way to switch inputs when in HDMI passthru mode. Sometimes I just wanna watch TV or play on the PS4 without the stereo. In order to switch inputs I have to power up the receiver, switch inputs then power it down (I know I could just leave

This unit does everything I wanted, gapless playback, phono input, multi channel analog input. It is very easy to setup. The Wireless Direct function is very useful, allowing a wireless connection without a router, after downloading the free app.

    Pros: Does everything I needed

Cons: Slow loading a large file count USB device with confusing message No Device . Also necessary to keep the front door open when using the USB port. Only available line level output that connects any selected input is Zone 2 with Party Mode selected.

This Yamaha RX-A1040 is much better than the old amplifier it replaced. Handles my 5.1 speaker system. Has inputs for phonograph, TV, DVD and VHS players, and could take more, as well as AM/FM tuner. Has extra outputs in back which I need for my hearing aids. High quality sound.

Excellent receiver, everything working so far. Had one issue when the sound wouldn't come in from the TV out put. Only happen once, so might have been a small issue. Mine main issue was 4K and 3D which work great, my previous Yamaha didn't have that ability.

Pros: Lite weight, many HDMI cables, has the ability to have a TV and Project connections.

Cons: Possible sound issue, only happened once. Everything else works great

Cons: 160 page manual. Keep it electronic for easy search.

This unit replaced an RX-665. Very pleased to have the Internet, wi-fi and blue tooth capabilities. Two zone operations a plus for listening to two different audio channels. The party mode on the RX- A 1040 has ample power for driving speakers out on the patio.

Pros: Great sound, Internet and wi-fi connectivity a big plus, two zone capabilities is like having two receivers in one.

Cons: Took a will to figure out the two zone features.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a 12 year old Harman-Karman Receiver, which lacked HD Radio, HDMI inputs/outputs, a phono input and a USB input features to name a few. Quite a step up in terms of features and performance. While I have not tried the phono interface, I've dabbled with a number of other features and so far love this receiver. The HD Radio receiver is far more sensitive than the standalone unit I had been using with our old receiver. The USB onscreen i/f is not love, but I've gotten accustomed to its awkward use model.

    Pros: Easy setup. Nice features.

Cons: Weight. USB on-screen interface is fairly lame when compared to modern car stereos - it doesn't remember last USB drive folder/song, nor last iPod song, etc.

    Preliminary results are favorable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a unit that supported HD Radio and Internet radio. Very well informed salesman at Crutchfield suggested this unit. Still in early phase of testing its performance, but very satisfied. Moderately steep learning curve first day, but sound and operations on HD and Internet radio is excellent. Still using old speakers but producing sound of excellent quality. Downloaded AV remote controller for iPad and also for my Android Phone, permittiing easy remote control of the Yamaha 1040. Easy to set up wireless remote control to internet and also to remote controller.

Pros: Provides access to HD Radio and Internet via wireless. Excellent sound. Very solid construction. Very good price for quality of unit.

Cons: Lack of a paper manual. It is a bit difficult to set up this complicated a unit when having to flip "pages" in a PDF file on my iPad.

    Solid receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

4.5 stars may be more accurate. Heres what my goal was with this receiver. I have a SOLID ten year old 100x7 yamaha already. I didn't need a new one but thought it might be nice to have hdmi switching and that cool wifi remote app on my ipad. This was probably not the best reason to spend this kind of money, but I also figured if my old one went out at some point I might as well get my upgrade now while its on closeout!! I run a 5.1 system and have 2 additional stereo speakers running in my kitchen. This receiver has a pretty awesome remote app and zone 2 capabilities. Someone can be watching a movie in the living room while I listen to pandora in the kitchen while each of us have our own remotes to control. I love the hdmi switching that I didn't have before, along with the accompanying on screen display. Unfortunately, I have experienced a screen that goes black for about 5 seconds each time it happens, once every hour or so. It has happened 5 times now in the last week. Its not a huge deal but makes me question if it will last 10 years like my other yamaha. I will likely exchange it for the same one and hope it doesn't happen again. I have not heard of these receivers having this issue so maybe I just got a bad one. Aside from all of this the receiver is solid, relatively easy to learn/use/tweak, and sounds good. I would definitely recommend it for $800. If it were the normal $1200 msrp however, I would have likely held off on upgrading until mine broke.

Pros: Yamaha quality Yamaha sound and power Excellent tweakability and features LOVE the ipad/android app to control it

Cons: Might have gotten a bad apple with the hdmi switching Not much of a sound difference vs my 10 year old yamaha with 10 less watts per channel

    Solid Value - Easy Setup

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the RX-A1040 to replace a 3-year-old Onkyo TX-NR809 that blew the amp board for a second time after only light use. I've always been happy with my Crutchfield purchasing experience, so they were my first stop for an upgrade. The A1040 integrated easily into my existing configuration (built in a Salamander Synergy rack), was easy to configure with only a quick trip to the manual, and still has some inputs free for expansion. Input reassignment and flexibility is very good. ARC audio works great with my Samsung UN65JU7100 (did not work with the Onkyo), and the sound is clean and bright without adjusting any tone controls. The iPad control app is a plus, although I haven't used it a lot yet, as are the built-in Spotify and Pandora applets. Overall, very pleased with my purchase.

Pros: Ease of setup and configuration; built-in audio streaming apps; working ARC audio; pleasing physical design.

    Cons: None so far.

    RX-A1040 - Solid Value

Written by: DocOllie from Columbus, Ohio on January 9, 2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Yamaha RX-A1040 provides more than I need now, but room to grow at a very attractive price point with current Crutchfield discounts. I was looking for home theater receivers that had optical AV outputs and the RX-A1040 delivers. Newer units with similar specs have drop that option. I also wanted a unit that would up-convert all my video inputs to 4K and again this Yamaha delivers. The YPAO speaker calibration is exceptionally easy and better yet, it really does make a difference.

Pros: Detailed Manual on CD and updates available online. Clean sound and great video. Easy to use presets for video and audio

Cons: This is a 7.1 receiver and setting up using only 5.1 speakers required a trip to the manual. One must use the middle sound speaker output to drive rear speaker surround speakers in the 5.1 configuration.

Pros: Sound, clean looks, great performance. Well worth the money.

Cons: For some, a bit of reading may be needed, these things do a lot. I printed out the manual to get a few things right.

Great receiver. Simple and straightforward setup. I had a much higher priced Onkyo before, and it was much more complicated and no better sound than this new Yamaha. Very pleased with it!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start off by saying the unit I am replacing is a Yahama RX-A1700, which I absolutely loved, only reason I am replacing it is one of the surround channels went out and $400 to repair it isn't logical as I have used this receiver at least 25,000 hours for movies, music and tv, that's right 25,000 hours, so my expectations for the Yamaha RX-A1040 are quite high. The picture quality is great, clear and sharp, the audio during movie playback is also quite good and the audio playback of my Ipod on the USB connector is clear and very good. Setup was quite easy, manual or automatic. Here's my problem, I'm old school and vinyl plays a big part of my listening pleasure and this unit isn't quite as good as my old Yahama, now I fully realize that the unit isn't designed with vinyl in mind but that is my preference, on the Pure Direct mode, I believe it is unlistenable. The other issue I have is the remote, for a person with big hands and fingers it is a pain to use, the layout of the remote without labeling the buttons to match the input jacks ie. DVD input jack = Dvd button makes it a little complicated for other users who did not set up the system, also the fact it is a dumb remote makes it inconvenient come shutoff time. Lastly there are no AC switched outlets on the back of the receiver. Are the negative's a deal breaker I haven't decided yet, I do believe this unit is more of an entry level receiver than I expected..

Pros: Easy setup, manual or automatic, very good picture and sound using HDMI connections for DVD or Bly-Ray

Cons: No switched plugs on back of unit, playback in phono mode seems flat and not very good reproduction of highs, seems cloudy, pure direct seems very low quality reproduction, remote control is dumb, buttons small and not clearly marked, necessary to push the same button multiple times to make adjustments.

Have only had it for about a month, it is an absolute beast, love it. Hooks up fairly easy if you have a good idea of wiring from previous receivers. Really enjoy all the different sound options. Was having problems with my previous receiver with the sound not syncing up with the picture, enough to drive you insane, problem is now gone and I can blast my concert dvd's through my Klipsch's again. Next up looking into setting up a 7.1 system to take full adavantage of this work of art.

Pros: able to hook up legacy componets, cd player, couple different dvd players. The simple little Phono jack was a major selling point for this old vinyl freak.

Cons: no real cons, takes a bit of time to figure out the remote, and the different AV inputs, buttons on remote a bit small.

Easy to set up. I didn't even read the instructions, just plugged the HDMI inputs in and ran one output to the tv, then speakers and antennas. Everything works great. Every thing as promised. Easy to set up and I really thought I was gonna like the Yamaha sound having owned several peripherals by them. Once it was set up was disappointed with the lack of what I describe the "thickness" of the sound compared to the dying old Marantz it was replacing. It seemed reedy, if that makes sense. In general, there was a lack of staging - voices and instruments in space. I exchanged it for the older model Marantz SR7007. Not night and day, but a definite stage presence and stronger female vocals.

    Pros: Ease of set up.

Cons: Reedy sound. Lack of staging by the preamp portion. Did not show off my B&W's. The Marantz does.

I replaced my 7000 series Marantz with this receiver. I have it connected to a 5.1 Polk Audio speaker 5system and two pool side speakers. The set up was easy and all my input components interface well. The unit is packed with a lot of features. The phone app is pretty cool. It pumps out some good clear sound.

Pros: Ease of setup and use. The phone app. A "clean and uncluttered" appearance

Cons: The remote. The buttons are small and it's "dumb," so you will need all your other remotes. Do yourself a favor and get a smart one such as a logitech.

Great big (more on that in a minute) unit. Works great. My IT and AV professional friends tried to over complicate things and really were clueless on how to use something that operates so easily right out of the box. After their over analysis and head scratching, I had everything up and running flawlessly in less than thirty minutes while they went to lunch. Excellent sound in any config. And handles 16x9 HD video flawlessly (most of the pros complications involved resolution); just set all your sources and displays to the same resolution...then no issues. Settings and config were easy to figure out and set-up (once the "pros" went to lunch). The con is that it won't fit into a standard rack. Could barely get it into the rack space, and with all cables, antennas, etc. connected it just does not fit. So now I have to purchase a deeper and taller rack. Maybe the pros at Crutchfield can help with this. Bottom line, very nice unit, especially for home theater, which it is designed for, and for some small to medium AV applications like conference rooms.

This was a great addition. I just bought a new 4k TV and found out that I didn't have a way to get native 4k programming to my TV except for the Netflix app installed on the TV. I needed for Audio to be able to go back to my Receiver so the sound could be heard through my speakers. Think about it for a sec, all the components run into my receiver and then into my TV through 1 HDMI cable. There was no way to take my sound back From my TV to the reciever! This system had the updated technology to allow the HDMI to work going to and from the TV! Now my excellent audio on the 4k and all Netfilx shows travel back to my receiver and sound amazing through this system.

    Pros: Powerful and advanced.

Cons: It always starts in a mode that I have to manually change. I have to hit "1" to get Audio 1. It changes to some different mode after I turn the system off for the night. Not a big deal. Probably can be changed in the settings as I figure it out.

    May be Best in Class . . . BUT . . .

Written by: Craig from Central Ohio on March 24, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is definitely a quality receiver and probably the best in class in this price range. However, I purchased this and sent it back and I thought it might be helpful for others considering this receiver to know the reasons. When I ordered this, my primary reasons were the multiple inputs, Wi-Fi, Built-In Apple Airplay, Pandora support and zone 2 video capabilities. However, I discovered that my Viewsonic projector, which I had intended to use as Zone 1, had compatibility issues with the receiver. Once I switched from one input to another, I would lose the signal. When I used an ARC-enabled TV as Zone 1, I had no issues. But even with the projector as Zone 2, I still had some issues with a consistent signal. Also, note that if you have 2 HDMI outputs (e.g., 2 TVs) and you send the signal to both outputs, the receiver adjusts and "downscales" to the highest resolution of the "weakest" output. Accordingly, even though my projector is 1080p, my TV is 720p and the signal would be sent at 720p to both. What I learned from all this was I was better of doing a "workaround." Ultimately, I ended up getting a used past gen Yamaha with multiple optical audio inputs (but no HDMI) and then using a combination of HDMI and component video switches and splitters, Apple TV connected via optical cable and Pandora connected via optical cable through XboxOne, I was able to accomplish what I wanted in terms of multiple zones with much more flexibility than offered via this receiver for less $.

Pros: Probably the best-in-class receiver. Numerous inputs, features and great sound. Yamaha quality.

Cons: Compatibility with certain HDMI outputs (e.g., projector), Zone 2 limitations (but typical of most receivers), Lack of Bluetooth (optional). No HDCP 2.2. Some features may not justify additional price for some folks so do your research to determine whether this is a cost-effective solution for you. There are "workarounds" f you're willing to put in the time to configure the system but if not, this may be your best option.

Absolutely stunning sound quality and programming! This unit replaced an RX-V863, as I upgraded to 4k and 3D. This is my 3rd Yamaha receiver, and as usual it did not disappoint! I stepped up to the Aventage series and am so glad I did. Definitely worth the money. Technical support questions I had were answered professionally and courteously by the Crutchfield team. No A/V system is complete without the Aventage!

Pros: Suberb sound in any mode! Latest technology for A/V systems.

Cons: Wireless a little picky, but an Ethernet cable direct took care of it.

This product replaced an older (and lower price point) ONKYO home theater receiver. It was easy to set up and calibrate the sound/speakers for my room. I did not need to check the manual at all during set up. Following the quick start guide included with the receiver got me up and running quickly. The sound from this receiver is excellent and much better than the sound from the ONKYO it replaced. I've used the receiver to watch blue ray, dvd's, TV, Netflix and listen to my IPOD. I'm hearing things that I never heard before with my prior receiver. Yamaha nailed it. I'm especially pleased with the sound when listening to music from my IPOD.

Pros: Excellent sound. Easy to set up.

I have owned several Yamaha receivers over the years, and have always been impressed by their quality of contruction, durability, reliability and performance. This receiver replaced a ten year old Yamaha audio/video receiver. The old receiver still performed flawlessly but did not have any HDMI connections and I was having problems connecting to new video gear. I expected that the Aventage RX-A1040 would be well constructed and perform well. I was not disappointed. The new receiver has ever audio/video connection I could want (both HDMI and legacy audio/video connections).

I had an aging (15 year old Sony Receiver) that did not support HDMI. I have 4 game systems, a cable box, tape deck and phonograph and I wanted a receiver that I could plug it all into. This system fit the bill. In fact, it's hard to find another system with the same configuration of inputs and the handful of others are all about the same price. So I compared this to a couple in the same price range and this one seemed to get better reviews. I think it boils down to setup. The setup for this is very easy. Honestly, it took me more time to unplug my previous system and get this one out of the box than it did to wire it up and configure.

Pros: More features than I need (wait, is this a pro or a con. Kind of both really) Sound is excellent. Setup is easy. Supports my 4 game systems, cable TV, tape deck, and phonograph easily.

After doing quite a bit of homework, we settled on this for our first home theater receiver. Set up was simple with a straightforward owners manual. This was my first AV receiver set up, and I had no problems. It has plenty of power for bi-amping my tower speakers and the pre-sets sound fantastic.

Pros: ease of set up lots of power

Cons: you have to choose between bi-amping the main speakers or having the receiver power a 2nd audio zone. It would have been better if I could assign speaker outputs to a second zone. Based on my reading, there is no way to do this. Not a huge drawback, but one to be aware of.

I've waited about a month before reviewing this receiver because I wanted to be sure that I had enough time to give a good review. This is the third receiver that have tried. The first receiver was a Onkyo TX-N828. At first I was happy with it and gave it a good review (see the review under Onkyo TX-N828). But then I started to have HDMI problems. Much to Crutchfield's credit I received a full refund. You guys rock! I then placed an order with Denon for a AVR-X3100 because Crutchfield didn't have the new AVR-X3100 at that time. That was a mistake because I started having problems with it freezing up which caused me to have to do factory resets to get it going again. Which meant that I lost all of my settings. Thankfully it was less than 30 days old and Denon gave me a full refund. So lesson learned "buy from Crutchfield and get the 60 day return guarantee. I was replacing a Yamaha RX-V1065 which after all these years is still working great but long in the tooth. So I decided that I should stay with Yamaha since I've owned multiple Yamaha receivers and all of them are still alive a working 100% (even my Yamaha RX-V2400 that is 10yrs. old). Well I have to say that as of now my new Yamaha RX-A1040 receiver is a great sounding receiver for both music and movies. I have had no issues at all and the apps for your phone and tablets are great. Thanks Yamaha for a great receiver and Thank You Crutchfield for your outstanding customer service. I'm a customer for life!

Pros: Great for movies and music. Lots of sound field choices. Best of all lots of inputs for legacy equipment and a phono input to boot (love my vinyl!) Runs cooler than the Onkyo and Denon receivers. Sound is superb. Easy to setup. 3 Year Warranty which from my experience I will never need. What's not to like?

Cons: No built-in Bluetooth. But not a big thing since I wouldn't use it anyway.

    Audio Features

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

    • High Drive Amp Technology: A fully discrete power amplifier helps maximize sound and minimize distortion of the receiver. The Yamaha RX-A1040 AV Receiver is equipped with a 7-channel amplifier rated at 110 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability.
    • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
    • Professional Quality DACs: The Yamaha RX-A1040 uses ESS Sabre Premier 192kHz/24-bit DACs (ES9006) for all channels to produce professional quality digital audio with exceptionally good signal-to-noise ratio and up to 120dB of dynamic range. The AV receiver also utilizes low-jitter PLL circuitry to help optimize sound imaging. The result is a more dynamic sound with greater detail and less distortion.
    • Aluminum Front Panel: The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
    • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality.  The AV receiver also employs anti-vibration heatsinks to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure.
    • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
    • Independent Power Supplies: Independent power supplies are used for the receiver's analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. These power supplies are highly efficient and result in less power consumption in standby mode.

Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.

    • Basic: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, & Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Cinema DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When Cinema DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Bi-amp and Zone 2 speakers are not available in this mode
    • 7ch + Zone 2: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 2) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive five channels of power. The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Front Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 5ch Bi-Amp: Up to five speakers (Front L/R, Center, & Surround L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Surround Back amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Zone 2, Surround Back, and Front Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 5ch Bi-amp+SB: The receiver powers five speakers in the main room (Front L/R, Center, and Surround L/R) with the surround back amplifier channels used to bi-amp the front speakers. Using the receiver's multichannel preamp outputs, the surround back speakers are powered by an external amp. Zone 2 and Front Presence speakers are not available in this mode.

YPAO Automatic System Calibration: The Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room.  Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. Additional YPAO technologies include:

    • EQ: You can select between a varietyYPAO EQ result settings to better suit your speaker setup - Natural (adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright), Flat (use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics), Front (EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system), Through (does not use the YPAO EQ), or Manual (lets you adjust EQ for each channel manually).
    • R.S.C (Reflected Sound Control): The receiver also employs YPAO's Reflected Sound Control (RSC) to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound.
    • DSP Effect Normalization: In addition, YPAO provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.
    • YPAO Volume: Human ears have less sensitivity to high and low frequencies, especially at lower volumes. YPAO Volume applies loudness EQ correction to automatically adjust high and low frequency levels as volume changes. Using the YPAO measurement results, EQ correction is optimized to your system settings and listening environment.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker setup settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-1040 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes: Panorama (sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect), Dimension (adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room), and Center Width (moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers).
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie, Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game
    • Music Soundfields: Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Chamber, Cellar club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, Music Video, 5/7ch Stereo
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added); you can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB from the receiver or remote control. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-1040 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Cinema DSP 3D: The actually measured soundfield data in recorded soundtracks contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of theses sound images so that it can create the accurate and intensive stereoscopic soundfield in your listening room. The receiver achieves Cinema DSP 3D through its virtual Presence Speaker mode.
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Virtual Cinema Front: With Virtual Cinema Front, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-1040 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Pure Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front-panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources. During Pure Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-1040 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-1040 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-1040 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.
Note: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-1040 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The Yamaha AV receiver is equipped with three optical digital inputs, three coaxial digital inputs (rear), and one optical digital output (rear).

    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-1040 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Yamaha RX-A1040 offers Audio/Video Zone 2 (with HDMI switching) and Party Mode (audio only) for playback of a variety audio/video sources in two separate rooms of your home.

    • Zone 2 Audio: The receiver has dedicated stereo RCA outputs for Zone 2, or the built-in amplifier can be configured to power speakers in the second zone connected to the Extra Speaker terminals, allowing you to listen to different audio sources in two different rooms of your home. By using the RCA outputs on the AV receiver you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and play a different stereo audio source in another room of your home. By using the speaker-level outputs on the AV receiver you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different stereo audio source in the other room. When the receiver is powering speakers in Zone 2, the surround back/front height speakers in the main room are turned off (limiting you to 5.1ch in the main room). The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by  the Yamaha receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.
      • Compatible Zone Sources: You can select the following input sources for Zone 2.
        • Analog Audio Inputs
        • AM/FM Tuner (you cannot select different AM/FM radio stations for each zone)
        • USB (including iPod/iPhone) & AirPlay
        • Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time)
        • DLNA/Media Player contents
      • Incompatible Zone Sources:
        • Optical/coaxial digital audio sources are not output to Zone 2.
        • Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network source exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select "Network Server" for Zone 2 when "USB" is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to "Network Server".
    • Zone 2 Video: The Yamaha receiver's composite, component, and second HDMI monitor can be assigned to Zone 2 so two different video feeds can be sent to two different displays at the same time directly from the receiver (you must connect the same video connection to your second display monitor as connected to your receiver for that particular source; there is no video-conversion or scaling for Zone 2). HDMI Zone 2 will also output multichannel audio signals for the HDMI input source selected.
    • Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone & Zone 2's volume level can be adjusted independently. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.

    • Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
    • Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

    Remote + Bluetooth Control

IR Remote w/ HDMI-CEC: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI-CEC). HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI. When the AV receiver is connected to a HDMI-CEC compatible TV, they will turn ON/OFF together and you can use the TV remote to control the volume of the receiver. HDMI-CEC also provides playback functionality with other components, such as your Blu-ray player. For example, you can use the receiver's remote control to operate player functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, or Stop.

Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.

AV Controller App: Download Yamaha's free AV Controller App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.1+) device and turn your mobile device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network as the Yamaha AV receiver.

    • Basic Remote Functions: The AV Controller App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device.
    • DSP Controller: You can use the AV Controller App to adjust DSP soundfields & parameters to your preference to match the type of music/movie or the mood you want to achieve. There are two modes - (1) Basic, which lets you adjust the sound space by simply pinching the screen in-and-out; and (2) Advanced, which allows detailed adjustment of various parameters such as reverb, initial delay, and liveness.
    • Internal Content Browsing: Using this app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can browse and listen to content from all internally available sources; such as Internet Radio, Pandora, Spotify, USB devices, and the AM/FM tuner.
    • Wireless Music Streaming: From the app, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.
    • Zone Control: You can control power on/off, source selection, volume and other functions of Zone 2. Customization such as changing zone icon and renaming zone is also supported.
    • Blu-Ray Player: This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Previous/Next Track.

AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPad (iOS 6.0+) or Android tablet (OS 4.0+) for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.

Remote Connections: The RX-1040 offers a variety of remote connections.

    • 12V Trigger Output: The RX-1040 has a programmable minijack output to send a 12-Volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The trigger is programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone2) or a specific source.
    • Remote Jacks: The receiver has remote input and remote output minijack terminals for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
    • RS-232C Port: The AV receiver's RS-232C port provides seamless integration with a wide range of third-party home automation control systems.

Add-on Bluetooth Audio Receiver: The Yamaha YBA-11 Bluetooth Audio Receiver (022YBA11, sold separately) can be used to wirelessly connect your Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices to the Yamaha AV receiver. The YBA-11 connects to the digital coaxial audio input on the back of the Yamaha AV receiver and is powered by the rear-panel DC Out/USB type-A port (5V/0.5A) of the receiver.

Best features for the price. [ Sig  Feb 01, 2016 ]
Last of the Yamaha receivers (and most other company receivers and pre-amplifiers) to have analogue multi-channel inputs (amc). The latest models "replaced" amc with HDMI 2.2 and I am not interested in HDMI 2.2 HDR or Atmos capabilities. I have been using the pre-amplifier section of Yamaha receivers (RX-V661;RX-A1020; RX-Z7) for sometime now and will do so with the RX-A1040 - these models work in a similar manner and do the job that the I need. The Crutchfield price was the clincher. [ Martin  Jan 29, 2016 ]

I found the discounted Yamaha Aventage RX1040 provided exactly what I was looking for over the closer to MSRP RX1050. This receiver replaces a 20 year old Denon and will be used with an external amp which the RX1040 provides outputs to. [ William  Dec 07, 2015 ]

    9 questions already asked

I gave up vinyl many years ago so I don't know. I DO know that this unit sounds great and the interface is also great. I've been a Yamaha fan for my last 3 receivers, I love their controls and sound. [ Stephen  May 11, 2016 ]
Hi Mike....Turntables actually have the very best sound, but that can only be had by very careful component selection, and even more careful adjustment of the turntable and all its parts, including what the turntable rests on. CD's and music downloads are very much simpler and problem free. Records for turntables are also expensive, easily damaged, and hard to store. As for ME.....my turntable gives me the greatest of musical pleasure. [ STANLEY  May 11, 2016 ]
The receiver display consists of three sections. Each section has two lines. The right section shows the relative volume and the speakers to which sound is currently being sent (the speaker block icons. The center section shows the input currently selected (AV1, AV2, AUDIO1, TUNER, etc.). The second line shows the type of signal being processed (PCM, Analog, Dolby Digital, DTS-HD MSTR, etc). The second line also briefly displays the sound program when it is changed. [ JOSEPH W  Apr 25, 2016 ]
On the remote control there is a button that says info. Continue to press it as it will display all inputs and outputs of signal being played. [ CRAIG K  Apr 27, 2016 ]
There's a button labelled "INFO" on the unit and on the remote. It toggles the display between DSP Program and Audio Decoder. If you leave it on Audio Decoder the display will show the input content "Dolby Digital", "PCM", "Stereo", etc. [ Doug  Apr 26, 2016 ]
go to menu.and pull up information and on the bottom you see audio signal click on it and it will show the input and the output hope this will help [ mitchell l.  Apr 25, 2016 ]
There are small icons on the display which shows which speakers are active. [ Todd J.  Apr 25, 2016 ]
install the included ant. [ Douglas  Mar 01, 2016 ]
There is an FM antenna and AM antenna included. I am happy with the reception. [ STEWART L  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Nothing. The unit comes with FM/AM antennas. Page33 of the manual shows how to connect the supplied antennas. Pages 63 and 64 describe "Listening to FM/AM radio. [ JOSEPH W  Mar 01, 2016 ]
The unit ships with both AM and FM antennas, so you shouldn't have to buy any thing else unless you live in an area where reception is really bad. In the city where I live, AM reception is limited to a few strong stations only, but your location could be very different and you may not need to add anything at all. The HD Radio band (FM) is outstanding, but I had to get an amplified FM ant. to receive a few weaker signals in the area. [ MICHAEL  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Don't know the answer to your question but the guys at Crutchfield answered any questions I had promptly before I bought my unit. Maybe there's an outboard AM/FM unit you can add. I primarily choose this unit for its phono input and quality to value. [ Ron  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Mine came with an AM loop antenna, and an FM dipole, that's all I needed, but range isn't a problem for me. I used to use a regular TV antenna for better radio reception, but hasn't been needed with this set. [ LEONARD  Mar 01, 2016 ]
The manual says that you can use 4 ohm speakers as the front speakers if you set the receiver's speaker impedance to 6 ohms. Under the default settings, the unit is configured for 8 ohm speakers. The 6 ohm setting allows you to use 6 ohm speakers for any channel and 4 ohm speakers as the front speakers. [ JOSEPH W  Jan 02, 2016 ]
Yes, for the front channels, at least according to page 18 in the manual. [ Matthew  Jan 02, 2016 ]
Yes, absolutely no problem. Yamaha's are known for their low impedance drive capability. Don't bother changing the impedance switch on the back unless you are driving 7 4ohm speakers, and even then I wouldn't bother unless you have issues with the unit going into protection shutdown (overheating), but that's not likely. Enjoy it as is right out of the box. [ MICHAEL  Jan 02, 2016 ]
The default setting is for 8 ohm speakers. However, you can set the speaker impedance to 6 ohms. You also can use 4 ohm speakers for the front speakers with this setting according to the User Manual page 18. Hope this helps. [ JAMES  Jan 02, 2016 ]
    Yes you can ! [ LOUIS  Jan 02, 2016 ]
Yes, but be sure to adjust the impedance to properly accommodate your speakers. If you read the instruction manual it points out how to adjust for this. Good listening Victor... [ STANLEY  Jan 02, 2016 ]
    not a clue, we use 2.4 - Sorry we can't help [ RON  Feb 21, 2015 ]
yes, it works fine with it.i have been using 5ghz with this receiver with a netgear n600 dual band router and it works fine. [ leslie  Feb 17, 2015 ]
The RX-A1040 supports the 2.4Ghz wireless radio frequency standard only, not 5Ghz. [ MICHAEL  Feb 16, 2015 ]
I would like to be helpful, but I'm afraid this question is far too advanced for me. [ JOHN  Feb 16, 2015 ]
It worked on both for me. I did end up using a direct connection. It made everthing workd faster. Have fun. [ Douglas  Feb 16, 2015 ]
I don't know. I only communicate with it thru my wireless router. [ LEONARD  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Yes you can with an adapter. I assume you already know that you'll have to make other arrangements for audio as audio doesn't go through a DVI connection. [ Andrew  Feb 16, 2015 ]
Sorry Eric, I can't answer your question. I returned this receiver cause I could not figure out how to operate it. [ KARL  Dec 29, 2014 ]
Didn't use zone 2, and I sent this back. We bought onkyo instead. [ LAKISHA  Nov 19, 2014 ]
Sorry, but I don't know the answer. I'm not very technical. It does sound better than my old Onkyo. [ LEONARD  Nov 13, 2014 ]
Eric, I am not an expert but in order to convert digital signal to analog, you'll need DAC(digital to analog converter). [ KYONG  Nov 13, 2014 ]
How many amps does this receiver draw? [ Andrew  Feb 23, 2015 ]
I have not noticed a hum after the unit is turned off. [ GORDON H  Oct 08, 2014 ]
