Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format we've heard to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it roars directly overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add one or two pairs of in-ceiling speakers to your five- or seven-channel system, or pick up some Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this receiver supports:

  • 7.1.2 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.4 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers
  • 5.1.2 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 7.1.4 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)

You can use one or two subwoofers with any of these configurations.

With a firmware upgrade, this receiver also supports DTS:X surround sound, a new format which uses object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.

Pick up good vibrations only

Yamaha builds their AVENTAGE series receivers with custom-designed parts that use anti-resonance technology to reduce distortion caused by vibration. The RX-A3050's rigid H-shaped frame provides stability to reduce chassis vibration almost completely. A specially designed fifth foot at the center of the receiver's base helps dampen internal and external vibrations, and an aluminum front panel further reduces resonance for optimal sound quality. An extra bottom cover provides additional support for improved performance. All of this attention to detail in the receiver's construction, combined with its symmetrical amp layout and low-jitter PLL circuitry, results in accurate playback, precise stereo imaging, and a wide, natural soundstage.

Yamaha's AV Controller App

Yamaha's AV Controller app lets you stream music wirelessly and control playback options on the RX-A3050

Ultimate wireless convenience

The Wi-Fi-equipped RX-A3050 gives you quick access to all of your favorite songs plus plenty of ways to discover new music. Access content from your personal digital music library, or explore different Internet radio services. Pandora® lets you enjoy all the custom radio stations you listen to on the go in the comfort of your living room, and vTuner lets you listen to Internet radio stations from all over the world. With a premium Spotify® subscription, you can stream your favorite albums and playlists wirelessly to the receiver via your Internet router, controlling playback from your mobile device. Built-in Bluetooth lets you stream any music you listen to on your phone, tablet or computer, and Apple AirPlay lets you send music wirelessly from a compatible Apple device or from any computer with iTunes®.

Entertainment in up to four rooms

The RX-A3050's nine-channel amplifier with eleven powered speaker outputs gives you the flexibility to extend playback of different sources to four different rooms. You can play music in up to two additional rooms while enjoying five- or seven-channel surround sound in your living room. If you have nine speakers connected in your main room, Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign feature automatically activates all nine speakers when the second and third zones aren't in use.

A second HDMI output lets you select an independent video source for playback on a TV in a fourth room, so it's easy to put on a movie for the kids to watch in the rec room while you catch up on your TV shows in the living room. Since HDMI carries both video and audio signals, a single-cable connection is all that's required.

Take control of your system with a flexible remote app

Our customers love Yamaha's AV Controller app. This number-one-rated control app turns your mobile device into a Wi-Fi remote so you can control and customize playback options on the RX-A3050. Switch sources, tweak settings, control multi-zone playback, and select Internet radio stations with effortlessly intuitive touchscreen operation. You can even hide unused icons and rename functions to personalize your remote to your system. Thanks to Yamaha's Wireless Direct technology, you can also control the receiver and stream music from your device without a network connection. If you prefer doing things the old-fashioned way, Yamaha's updated remote control is easy to use, and the receiver's advanced on-screen interface makes it a breeze to navigate settings and functions.

Simplified setup solutions for optimal performance

Yamaha has seen to it that you won't need to sweat setting up your system. A free AV Setup Guide app for iOS and Android™ tablets takes you step-by-step, with illustrations, through the process of connecting your speakers and sources. Once you've gotten everything connected, just plug the included setup mic into the RX-A3050's front panel and the YPAO calibration system will analyze your speakers and your room's acoustics for optimal performance. YPAO is simple and automatic and sets the best sound for any room, no matter where your speakers are placed.

MusicCast puts whole home audio at your fingertips

Yamaha's new MusicCast feature makes it easy to build a whole home wireless audio system starting with the RX-A3050. Use your existing Wi-Fi network to stream music to compatible Yamaha wireless speakers and sound bars in different rooms. Each room's speakers can be controlled independently with the free MusicCast app. The app lets you control playback, browse music sources, and select which rooms you want to use. Listen to the same music throughout your home, or play something different in each room. Access your personal digital music library, Internet radio, and popular streaming services. Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.

    • High Drive Amp Technology: A fully discrete power amplifier helps maximize sound and minimize distortion of the receiver. The Yamaha RX-A3050 AV Receiver is equipped with a 9-channel amplifier rated at 150 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability.
    • Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout: The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left & right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal to noise ratio and helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.
    • Ultra-High Performance 32-Bit DACs: The Yamaha RX-A3050 uses high performance ESS Sabre32 Ultra 192kHz/32-bit DACs (ES9016) for all channels (except Presence channels which use ES9006 Sabre Premier 192kHz/24-bit DACs). With ESS patented 32-bit Hyperstream DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, the ES9016 SABRE32 Ultra DACs deliver spectacular music and music soundtracks with an unsurpassed sound stage, with up to 124 dB dynamic range and 0.0003% (-110 dB) total harmonic distortion and free from clock jitter common in digital audio systems. This AV receiver's sound reproduction is for the most discriminating of listeners.
    • Aluminum Front-Panel: The aluminum front-panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic energy generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.
    • H-Shaped Cross Member Frame: The interior of the receiver is reinforced with cross members in an H-shape to provide an extremely rigid and stable frame. This reduces chassis vibration to virtually zero even during high volume output (seemingly even minor vibrations can affect the sound), maintaining the highest audio quality.
    • A.R.T.: The A.R.T. (Anti-Resonance Technology) Wedge 5th foot is in the center of the unit. It dampens vibrations from the power transformer, power transistors and heat sinks, as well as vibrations that might be caused by the sound from the speakers. A.R.T. Wedge 5th foot helps ensure that vibrations do not affect the sound quality. The AV receiver also employs anti-vibration heatsinks to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure.
    • Double Bottom Construction: An additional bottom cover is added for additional support and to improve sound performance at higher volume levels and also support the power transformer and heat sinks.
    • Independent Power Supplies: Independent power supplies are used for the receiver's analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. These power supplies are highly efficient and result in less power consumption in standby mode.

Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.

    • Basic 9ch: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, & Rear Presence L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Cinema DSP 3D or Dolby Atmos is on, the two Rear Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When Cinema DSP 3D or Dolby Atmos is off, this situation is reversed. Bi-amp and Zone 2/3 speakers are not available in this mode
    • 9ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Zone 3 is off, all nine channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 3 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 3 and the Main Zone will receive seven channels of power. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 3. Bi-amp, Zone 2, and Rear Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 2) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in another room simultaneously. The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + 2 Zones: In this configuration, up to eleven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Zone 2, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. You can enjoy 7.1ch surround in the main room and 2ch stereo in Zone 2 simultaneously. However when Zone 3 is turned-on, the main zone will be limited 5.1ch surround with no surround back speakers (Zone 2 will stay active). The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to either zone. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2. Bi-amp and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch + Front + 1 Zone: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver for playback of audio in two separate rooms. The two Front L/R speakers will be powered by an external amp. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Zone 2 and Rear Presence speakers are not available.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp: Up to seven speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Zone 2/3 and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 7ch Bi-Amp + 1 Zone: Up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Extra Speaker 1 amplifier channels of the AV receiver are assigned to bi-amp the front speakers. The Extra Speaker 2 amplifier channels of the receiver are assigned to Zone 3. Zone 2 and Presence speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 5ch + Front + 2 Zones: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Zone 2, and Zone 3) can be connected to the AV receiver for playback of audio in three separate rooms. The two Front L/R speakers will be powered by an external amp. The same or different input sources/volume settings can be applied to either zone. Multichannel sources are mixed down to 2-channels and output to Zone 2/3. Presence speakers are not available.
Note: The receiver offers four configurations for its Front & Rear Presence speakers - Front Height (for Cinema DSP 3D), Rear Height (for Cinema DSP 3D), Overhead (for Dolby Atmos), or Dolby Enabled SP (for Dolby Atmos).

YPAO Automatic System Calibration: The Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Up to 8 listening position measurements are taken to optimize the surround effect for a broad area. Additional YPAO technologies include:

    • EQ: You can select between a variety of YPAO EQ result settings to better suit your speaker setup - Natural (adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright), Flat (use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics), Front (EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system), Through (does not use the YPAO EQ), or Manual (lets you adjust EQ for each channel manually).
    • 3D Angle Measurement: The direction (angle) of the front speakers, surround speakers, and presence speakers as seen from the listening position is measured, and compensation is applied to the soundfield in order to maximize the effectiveness of the CINEMA DSP soundfield.
    • R.S.C (Reflected Sound Control): The receiver also employs YPAO's Reflected Sound Control (RSC) to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound.
    • DSP Effect Normalization: In addition, YPAO provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.
    • YPAO Volume: Human ears have less sensitivity to high and low frequencies, especially at lower volumes. YPAO Volume applies loudness EQ correction to automatically adjust high and low frequency levels as volume changes. Using the YPAO measurement results, EQ correction is optimized to your system settings and listening environment.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker setup settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Yamaha RX-A3050 AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, & Neural:X.

    • Dolby Atmos: The Yamaha AV receiver will enhance properly designed systems with Dolby Atmos where sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill the home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth. The RX-A3050 has the processing power to run a more enveloping 7ch or 9ch Dolby Atmos layout using 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2, or 7.1.4 configurations utilizing ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.1.2 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by 2 overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 5.1.4 configuration is based on a 5.1 speaker layout with 4 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 7.1.2 configuration is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with 2 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 7.1.4 configuration is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with 4 overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (two of the speakers must be powered by an external 2ch amp.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space. DTS:X will be enabled through an online firmware update. Click here for update.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format. DTS:X Neural:X will also require the same firmware update.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes: Panorama (sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect), Dimension (adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room), and Center Width (moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers).
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 23 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie
    • Entertainment Soundfields: Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Music Video
    • Music Soundfields: Recital/Opera, Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Hall in Amsterdam, Church in Freiburg, Church in Royaumont, Chamber, Village Vanguard, Warehouse Loft, Cellar club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, 9ch Stereo

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Cinema DSP HD3: CINEMA DSP HD3 is Yamaha's flagship 3D soundfield playback technology that takes full advantage of the massive amount of acoustic reflection data included in the soundfield data. Cinema DSP HD3 uses four CINEMA DSP engines with advanced 3D processing and supports front & rear presence speaker output (plus Virtual Presence Speaker mode), in order to deliver more than twice as much capability for generating acoustic reflections as conventional CINEMA DSP 3D, in addition to high-frequency playback capability, delivering an utterly natural and powerful spatial soundfield.
      • Virtual Presence Speaker (VPS): With the power of CINEMA DSP HD3, the Virtual Presence Speaker function makes full use of center and surround speakers to create audible information from where presence (height) speakers are normally installed.
      • Virtual Surround Back Speaker (VSBS): This receiver also features a Virtual Surround Back Speaker function. Even without using surround back speakers, you can experience more natural, lifelike sound from behind you without physical speakers being installed in the surround back area of the listening environment.
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Virtual Cinema Front: With Virtual Cinema Front, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.

    • DSP Level: You can change the receiver's CINEMA DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.
    • Delay: Adjusts the delay between the direct sound and the presence soundfield (1-99ms), surround soundfield (1-49ms), and surround back soundfield (1-49ms).
    • Room Size: Adjusts the broadening effect (0.1-2.0) of the presence soundfield, surround soundfield, and the surround back sound field.
    • Liveness: Adjusts the loss (0-10) of the presence soundfield, surround back soundfield, and surround back soundfield.
    • Reverb: Adjusts the delay time of the rear reverberant sound (1.0-5.0s), the delay between the direct sound and rear reverberant sound (0-250ms), and the volume of the reverberant sound (0-100%).

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, and dims the front-panel display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders and DSP processors of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources. During Direct playback no sound is output from the subwoofer.

High-Resolution + Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible. In addition, high-bit high-sampling extension up to 96kHz/32-bit can be applied to lossless 44.1/48 kHz content such as from a CD (2-channel PCM) or a FLAC file for further heightening of the musicality in the original content.

Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha Aventage RX-A3050 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30 dB to +15 dB in 5 dB steps, or to +16.5 dB (full volume range is -80 dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80 dB to + 16.5 dB in increments of 0.5 dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.

Line-Level or Speaker-Level Zone 2 & 3 (Audio/Video): The receiver's Zone 2/Zone 3 outputs allow you to play the same or different audio/video sources in other rooms of your home. The receiver has dedicated stereo preamp outputs (requires separate amps) for both Zone 2 & 3, or the built-in amplifier can power speakers in the second and/or third zones connected to the Extra Speaker terminals. If either Zone 2 or Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 or Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence speakers in the main room are turned off. If both Zone 2 and Zone 3 speakers are powered by the receiver, when Zone 2 and Zone 3 is turned on, the receiver's Presence and Surround Back speakers in the main room are turned off. The analog video monitor outputs (component or composite) can also be assigned to Zone 2 or Zone 3 (but not both). The volume of Zone 2 or Zone 3 can be controlled by the Yamaha receiver using either configuration or from your add-on integrated amplifier when using the line-output. You can select the following input sources for Zone 2 or 3.

    • Analog Audio/Video Inputs (the video conversion between analog video jacks does not work for the multi-zone output; to watch video in another zone, you need to connect the Zone 2/3 video monitor out in the same way as the video input device)
    • HDMI 2Ch PCM Audio (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 3)
    • Optical/Coaxial Digital Audio Inputs (2ch PCM only)
    • USB (including iPod/iPhone)
    • AirPlay & Bluetooth
    • AM/FM Tuner & Internet Radio (You cannot select different radio stations from a single source for each zone).
    • DLNA & Network Content

HDMI Zone 2 & 4 (Audio/Video): The receiver's HDMI Output 2 terminal can be assigned to output audio/video content to Zone 2 or Zone 4 (but not both). Yamaha's advanced HDMI zone switching adds the capability to choose from all analog or digital audio/video sources for playback in Zone 2. However, Zone 4 only offers playback of the same or different HDMI connected audio/video sources. The Zone 2/4 HDMI output can be connected directly to a TV for basic video and 2ch audio playback. It can also be connected to a secondary home theater receiver for multi-channel playback in another zone. An on-screen graphical user interface makes it easy to browse and select content to enjoy from Zone 2 (not Zone 4), no matter what is being played in the main zone. You can select the following input sources for Zone 2 or 4.

    • HDMI Audio/Video (Multichannel or 2ch PCM)
    • Analog Audio/Video Inputs (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)
    • Optical/Coaxial Digital Audio Inputs (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)
    • USB + iPod/iPhone (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)
    • AirPlay & Bluetooth (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)
    • AM/FM Tuner & Internet Radio (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)
    • DLNA & Network Content (Zone 2 only; not available in Zone 4)

Party Mode: The Party Mode allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone2 & Zone3, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the party mode, stereo playback is automatically selected for all zones. The Main Zone, Zone 2, & Zone 3 volume can all be adjusted independently. Utilize this function when you want to play back an audio source as background music in two rooms of your home. Zone 4 is only available when an HDMI input source is selected in the main zone.

MusicCast Wireless Multiroom Streaming: This AV receiver supports Yamaha's MusicCast multiroom audio eco-system, which allows you to wirelessly play back a wide variety of audio sources and content in multiple rooms of your home (additional MusicCast products sold separately). MusicCast works with your home's existing WiFi router and Yamaha's free MusicCast App for Apple iOS and Android devices. You'll be able to stream the receiver's tuner, analog inputs, digital inputs, Bluetooth, and network sources to other MusicCast products installed in your home. In addition, you'll be able to stream your MusicCast products' sources to the AV receiver. MusicCast supports the following source content.

    • Analog & Digital Sources: External devices connected to the receiver via HDMI, optical/coax digital, analog, or USB can be played back over the MusicCast eco-system. *Multi-channel content (5.1ch/7.1ch) is down-mixed to 2-channel sound for playback in other rooms without affecting the master room.
    • Tuner & Online Music Services: Pandora, Spotify Connect, SiriusXM, Rhapsody, & vTuner can be accessed from the MusicCast app for multiroom playback. The receiver's built-in in AM/FM tuner is also supported.
    • DLNA: MusicCast supports DLNA, allowing access to DLNA-compatible computers and network attached storage (NAS) devices. With support for WAV, FLAC, and AIFF (up to 192kHz/24-bit), ALAC (up to 96kHz/24-bit), and MP3, WMA, and AAC (up to 48kHz). Master room playback is at the native sampling rate and other rooms down-convert to 48kHz.
    • Bluetooth: The receiver's Bluetooth source (SBC codec only) can be streamed to multiple MusicCast devices, so Bluetooth audio can be played in multiple rooms simultaneously. MusicCast devices can also stream out non-Bluetooth sources to most any Bluetooth speaker or headphones (regardless of manufacture), making it convenient to expand MusicCast to your existing audio products.
Note: This feature will require a firmware update.

MusicCast App: The free MusicCast app can be downloaded for Apple (iOS 7.1+) iPod/iPhone/iPad and Android (OS4.1+) smartphones/tablets. The MusicCast app puts control of your whole home listening experience in the palm of your hand from your Apple iOS or Android device. You'll be able to quickly select the room or rooms you want to listen to music in, select the source or sources you want to listen to, browse music content from your music library and online music services or Internet Radio, plus control music playback functions.

    • Rooms: Choose which room or rooms you want to listen to music in. You can select a different source for each room, group certain rooms together for playback of the same source, or link all rooms together so the same source is played back throughout the house.
    • Source Selection: From the app you can select which source or sources you want to listen to; choose from network-connected devices, select online music services, Internet Radio or Bluetooth. You can also select from the AV receiver's HDMI, digital, analog, and USB inputs.
    • Zone Control: You can activate the receiver's Zone function from the app's settings menu. The MusicCast app will then allow you to select inputs and provide basic volume controls on secondary zones.
    • Music Browsing: You can browse music libraries from your network-connected devices; like your smartphone, tablet, computer, or laptop. You can also browse music content from select online music services and search Internet Radio stations from the MusicCast app.
    • Playback & Song/Artist Info: From the MusiCast app on your compatible Apple iOS or Android device you get Volume Up/Down, Play/Pause, and Previous/Next Track; as well as song/artist information and album art.
    • Favorites: Internet radio stations, content from select online music services, plus playlists and songs from your network-connected device's music library can be saved as "Favorites" for quick recall within the MusicCast app.
    • Personalization & Customization: With the app's unique personalization features, you can choose from preloaded room images or change the color of buttons to represent each room in the home, or even take pictures of their own home and assign the images to each button. The content source buttons can also be customized to rename, remove or reorder selections for easier operation.
Note: Up to 10 MusicCast devices can be controlled by the MusicCast app.
    Convenience Features

Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-A3050 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Scene Plus: The Scene Plus function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on, along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. Scene Plus offers a choice of 12 Scene selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. Scene Plus can be selected from the receiver's front panel, remote control, on-screen GUI, and even from the Apple iOS or Android app. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button.

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, AIFF, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Favorites: You can register up to 40 favorites from USB and network content. These favorite shortcuts can be accessed directly from the remote control. Only the input source will be registered for Bluetooth and AirPlay.

Input Rename & Skip: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.

    • Sleep Timer: The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.
    • Auto Power Down: If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

    Remote + Bluetooth Control

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The RX-A3050 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR w/ A2DP) which let you easily enjoy wireless audio playback of stored music and music apps from your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Windows Phone/PC, Mac computer/laptop, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices through the AV receiver. Song/artist information will be displayed on your HDMI connected TV's screen and the front-panel of the receiver. You'll still use your Bluetooth-enabled device to control music playback.

    • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha receiver offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the receiver offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Compressed Music Enhancer: The Yamaha receiver's Compressed Music Enhancer feature is even optimized for Bluetooth audio transmissions to ensure that your music will have vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha AV receiver.

AV Controller App: Download Yamaha's free AV Controller App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.1+) device and turn your mobile device into a WiFi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network as the Yamaha AV receiver.

    • Basic Remote Functions: The AV Controller App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device.
    • DSP Controller: You can use the AV Controller App to adjust DSP soundfields & parameters to your preference to match the type of music/movie or the mood you want to achieve. There are two modes - (1) Basic, which lets you adjust the sound space by simply pinching the screen in-and-out; and (2) Advanced, which allows detailed adjustment of various parameters such as reverb, initial delay, and liveness.
    • Internal Content Browsing: Using this app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can browse and listen to content from all internally available sources; such as Internet Radio, Pandora, Spotify, USB devices, and the AM/FM tuner.
    • Wireless Music Streaming: From the app, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.
    • Zone Control: You can control power on/off, source selection, volume and other functions of Zone 2/3/4. Customization such as changing zone icon and renaming zone is also supported.
    • Blu-Ray Player: This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play/Pause, Stop, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Previous/Next Track.

AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPad (iOS 6.0+) or Android tablet (OS 4.0+) for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.

Multibrand Remote Control: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed to control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.

HDMI Control: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. If your TV or other external components support HDMI control, you can use the remote controls of those devices to operate some of this unit's functions, and to synchronize this unit with the operation of those devices. You can use the following operations with the remote control of any of the connected HDMI Control compatible devices.

    • Power synchronization (On/Standby)
    • Volume control, including Mute
    • Changing the volume of the audio output signal device (either the TV or the receiver)
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.

Remote Connections: The RX-A3050 offers a variety of remote connections.

    • 12V Trigger Outputs: The RX-A3050 has two programmable minijack outputs to send a 12-Volt DC turn-on signal to another component that accepts a 12V trigger, such as a power amplifier or motorized projection screen. The triggers are programmed either to work with a specific zone (main room or Zone2) or a specific source.
    • Remote Jacks: The receiver has remote input and remote output minijack terminals for use with external IR receivers and compatible Yamaha components.
    • RS-232C Port: The AV receiver's RS-232C port provides seamless integration with a wide range of third-party home automation control systems.

Does it play AIFF audio files?

We received this comment from a customer via email on this question: On page 179 of the Yamaha RX-A3050 manual I downloaded, there is a table of compatible file formats. Included is AIFF, which is uncompressed PCM 2-channel audio. So there should be no problem. Paul

How effectively will the RX-A3050 drive old and inefficient speakers? I have a pair of Mitsubishi MS-40 floor-standing speakers. They still sound great, but I think they're not very efficient.

I looked up your speakers it looks like they were produced in the early 80's --- To compare I am using the Polk LSI25 floor standing speakers with a sound sound speaker system built by polk- they are 1 LSI9 Center Channel, 4 LSI9's with 2 LSI9FX's - I also have a extra Polk 12' Sub coming out of sub out#2 the power I am getting out of the Yamaha 3050 amp seems to work great --- I played my system last night to a SADE music video on max (-20) before contacting you to be sure --

I added a pair of Definitive Technology BP-8060ST's to replace a tired pair of front speakers and sub. They sound amazing. The built in subs totally eliminated the boomy bass I used to have when driving my single sub too high. I use the system about 60/40 music/movies. I am totally happy with my selection. I just added the matched center speaker (yesterday). Although I haven't run a movie with the new center speaker, music in the 9-channel surround mode is now even better. Dynamic range and clarity is terrific. Eventually I will replace my in ceiling surrounds with Def Tec's as well.

    Q
I want to set my system up as a 5.1.4 with the normal front, rear, and center (the 5), one subwoofer (the .1) and four ceiling speakers for Atmos (the .4). I can't find a diagram in the manual that shows this as a connection option. I'm assuming I use the following connection points for each set of speakers. Front = fronts, Surround = rears, Center = center, Subwoofer = subwoofer, Extra SP1 = front ceiling speakers, Extra SP2 = rear ceiling speakers. Can someone verify this is correct?

Well I tried hooking it up this way and it didn't work. When I ran YPAO it didn't even find the rear presence speakers. It did find the front presence speakers though. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Joseph, that sounds correct, as per pp. 24-27 and the figure on p. 27 of the manual. My setup is currently 7.2.2 that way, awaiting a decision on the rear presence/elevation pair for 7.2.4. I'm using two front-wall-mounted speakers for the Presence/Atmos/DTS:X channels angled up toward the ceiling. They are connected to the Zone2/Zone3/Front Presence banana connectors on the A3050 and all seems to work fine. Actual mounting of the .2 or .4 speakers in the ceiling doesn't work for me.

I have 3 of these receivers and I can tell you that they are FANTASTIC! I use one of them as a dedicated home theater room set up with an additional 2 channel amp in a 7.1.4 set up. You should be able to use the amp without any problems as a 5.1.4 with this amplifier. I use the other amp as a family room set up as 5.1 and then 2 other zones... 1 zone is upstairs speakers that aim towards the family room for a whole house feel and the #2 zone is in the master bathroom area. Then I have the zone 4 output set to HDMI and wired that into the Avenge rx-3050 amp #3 that I use for all of my outside speakers on my patio areas as well as the yard. If you look at the picture of the back of the amplifier you should see all of the connections for the speakers and what you are trying to do should work.

    Q
At 19 5/16" this amp seems to be very DEEP. Can anyone tell me what size base this amp is being put on? Also, are the feet recessed (if so,how many inches to outer edges) so that a 19 5/16" base isn't needed. I can't find ANY TYPE of audio stand or HDTV/audio furniture that goes that deep.

My RX-A3050 is 18 5/8" (same as the manual says) from front-most edge of the knobs to backs of the speaker connectors and WiFi antenna. (BTW, the antenna adds 2.25" to the receiver's 7.5" height.) You should allow up to another 2.5" for the cables but they can stick out the back of the cabinet. The bend radii of my stiff HDMI cables require the most space. (You can get right-angle HDMI and RCA adapters and use spade lugs for the speaker connections to reduce the depth.) The four 2.25"-dia. plastic feet are inset all around. The key front-back dimension is 14" from the fronts of the front feet to the backs of the back feet, so a 14" shelf depth is good: otherwise the back feet could rest a little behind the shelf's edge. To clear the AVR and cables, most cabinets have no backing material (tempered hardboard) behind the top shelf, or you can do it with a small saw. My AVR is currently sitting on top of a 16.75"-deep walnut component cabinet with glass doors that I bought at a furniture store. It took some looking to find one that deep, but the AVR sits nicely on it with the cables hanging over the back. It would fit inside, but maybe 3" of the receiver including a little of the feet would hang out the open back. I will move the AVR soon to a black-lacquer AV cabinet I have that's 23" deep and 56" high. With slightly recessed glass doors, it fits easily inside. As I recall, it was in the Pioneer catalog about 15 years ago and it took some work to track down where to buy it. Also consider a glass AV table. I have a 5'-wide two-shelf glass-and-black-metal-leg AV "rack" (from an online store) whose top shelf is 21" deep and lower shelf is 18.5" deep (but partially blocked by a perforated sheetmetal strength panel). It would work fine with the AVR on the top shelf 20" above the floor. Otherwise openings could possibly be punched out of the perforated panel behind the lower shelf to accommodate the AVR cables. It is a deep amp. The door to my cabinet does not fully close ( probably 90%). Not a major problem for me, but suggest you contact Yamaha Customer Service directly and discuss with them before you purchase the unit.

Just measured mine. You have about 3/4 of an inch from the edge to the feet. I use a Z-line Designs TV stand and the receiver has plenty of room.

The feet are about 12" apart, center to center (front to back). They're each about 2 inches in diameter. The center of the front feet are about 2" back from the front panel, and the volume knob sticks out about 1" beyond the front panel. So, the first foot is centered about 3" back from the very front of the unit. The feet are about 13.5 inches wide, center to center. My numbers are approximate because I have the unit in a cabinet and can't easily pull it out to measure more exactly. Hope this helps. Don

Hi :) Yup it is a big amp. I have mine in an entertainment center. It is 3/4" thick shelf, which is 14 1/2" deep and 18" wide. For me the hieght was not a problem at all, although width wise it is a bit tight, maybe 1/2 space on each side. Hope this helps some :) Btw the feet are not recessed, and I love the amp :)

The legs/feet are 2" discs that are 15 wide by 14 deep. The unit itself is 19 deep and about 18 wide, not counting any room for ventilation and cables in rear.

I ran into the same issue. My cabinet was like 2 inches short of the depth. My solution was to cut out a back hole in my cabinet with an electric saw. So now the back sticks out and you can't see it. I figured to make little holes right behind other equipment like my blu ray player and cable box for easier hook up. For that i used a 1.5in hole saw that attaches to your drill. Now all my cables hang behind the cabinet.

Although neither version of the RX-A3050 manual I've downloaded mentions HDMI 2.0a or High Dynamic Range (key to the 2.0a spec), the Yamaha Website clearly states in several places that the receiver incorporates HDMI 2.0a. (Apparently, no firmware upgrade is needed as was the case for earlier receivers and Atmos, although HDMI 2.0 to 2.0a is apparently just a firmware update.) At the Yamaha USA Website, for example, under the Features section for the RX-A3050, they state "Full Support of HDMI 2.0a Spec: 4K Ultra HD Video Upconversion, HDCP 2.2 and High Dynamic Range (HDR)." There are good articles on 2.0a if you Google "HDMI 2.0a" (the spec for which was released only early this April). Especially check out the CNET and digitaltrends search results. Hope this helps. P. I am not sure, but if you go to the Yamaha website and look on the specification page for this model , if should tell you. If you still can't determine , i suggest you call the technical department or Customer Service at Yamaha , and ask them

I'm not really sure, I'd have to check the owners manual to know for sure. But someone at Crutchfield should be able to help, maybe their tech support dept. I will say this the 3050 is flagship reciever for Yamha, it seems like it should have the latest and greatest things.

Does Rx-a3050 only play dsf files among DSD files? Does not play sacd iso?

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Correct, and this does not play SACD ISO which is actually compressed. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
