Sound quality shouldn't be an afterthought in your home theater receiver. That's the advantage of Yamaha AVENTAGE receivers. Designed to make your music and movies sound their best, Yamaha's RX-A830 gives you easy control over your home theater system, flexible multi-zone setup, and uncompromised audio performance.
If you have a second HDTV and an extra set of speakers, then the 'A830 has the power and flexibilty to feed audio and video to two rooms at once. With connections for up to 9 speakers in total, plus 2 subwoofers, you can have a 7.2-channel home theater in one room and a stereo system in the other — both powered by this versatile receiver.
Yamaha's Intelligent Amp Assign makes switching between zones a breeze. As soon as you power on Zone 2, the 'A830 automatically redirects the signal from your "surround back" speakers in the main zone to the Zone 2 speakers. So you can still enjoy enveloping 5.1-channel surround sound in your main room while listening to a different song in Zone 2. Or fire up Party Mode to send the same signal to all speakers so both rooms are bouncing to the same beat. For video, a dedicated HDMI output for a second room means you can broadcast the same HD video signal to two TVs at once.
Yamaha goes the extra mile for excellent sound in its AVENTAGE receivers. The RX-A830 uses independent power supplies for analog and digital circuitry to prevent interference between the two, for purer audio signals. The aluminum front panel and extra center foot on the receiver's base help to further eliminate unwanted resonance and distortion. And the high-quality Burr-Brown digital-to-analog converters decode the latest high-resolution audio formats with accuracy and detail, so your digital sources like Blu-ray discs and lossless music files sound their best.
The free Yamaha A/V Controller app gives you easy touchscreen control over the RX-A830 with your smartphone or tablet.
When you connect the 'A830 to your home network, you'll open up a whole world of digital music. With built-in support for Apple AirPlay, you can send music from your iPhone®, iPad®, or computer running iTunes® directly to your receiver for playback. If you subscribe to Spotify® or Rhapsody®, you'll enjoy support for their massive music libraries as well. Plus you can stream music from Pandora® and thousands of free radio stations worldwide via vTuner. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer helps give MP3s and other digital music more depth and detail. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network or a wireless connection using the optional Yamaha Wi-Fi adapter.
If it's been a while since you last bought a receiver, then the 'A830's setup and control features will be a welcome improvement. The on-screen guide is full-color with lots of graphics for easy navigation — a far cry from the bare-bones black-and-white menu screens of just a few years ago. Plus, the free Yamaha A/V Controller app provides sophisticated touchscreen control over a wide range of functions from your Apple® smartphone or tablet, Kindle Fire™, or other Android™ device.
The RX-A830 is prepared to take on the latest and greatest digital sources. The front-panel HDMI input is MHL-compatible. That means you can connect your MHL-compatible Android tablet or smartphone to send music and HD video through your receiver for playback on your home theater system. Plus, the 'A830 supports 3D and 4K pass-through, so it can handle today's 3D Blu-ray players and as well as upcoming Ultra HD content as it arrives.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
I was forced to replace an Onkyo TX-SR606 when the HDMI circuitry began to fail. While I always had a great opinion of the Onkyo, I decided to move on to another brand and hopefully avoid the electrical shortcomings of the Onkyo's. The Yamaha RX-A830 matches and exceeds the Onkyo in every category.
Initial set up was quick and easy. I really enjoy the amount of control I have over each speaker in my set up and the expanded capability of the second zone. The sound is fantastic with my Definitive ProCinema 1000 satellites. Could not be happier with this receiver.
Pros: Ease of set-up, sound, expandability, features
Cons: It's unfortunate that you have to purchase separate equipment to network the receiver wirelessly. Most manufacturers are including this feature in their equipment at this price point.
This one replaced my RX-2400 which is still in perfect working order but I wanted HDMI inputs and outputs to reduce the wiring clutter.
Pros: HDMI inputs and outputs
Cons: Can't find any
Great upgrade from my 14-year old AV receiver that had no HDMI or Internet. Delivers clean, crisp sound to 2 zones. Was easy to set up - all settings are easy to locate and navigate through. I used manual speaker configuration, but I may eventually give the YPAO mic a try and see what it does. I would highly recommend the RX-A830.
Pros: 1. Easy to set up and operate, even with all the different options. 2. Four SCENE buttons are configurable and can be used to power on the unit and select an input source by pressing a single button.
Cons: When listening to audio-only input sources (e.g. tuner, Internet radio, iPod/USB, etc.) and using the TV to display info, there is no screen saver function.
The Yamaha RX-A830 replaced my Onkyo TX-SR805 when all HDMI ports failed at the same time. Apparently Onkyo HDMI failures are not unusual, and repairs are unreliable, even if repaired at an Onkyo service facility. Consequently I decided to go with anyone, but Onkyo.
The first AVR replacement was Denon AVR-1913. I returned it, because it wasn't reliable when the HDMI's were selected. My PS3, and Wii would not always work. The remote was too hard to setup.
Next I bought the Yamaha RX-A830. It was very easy to setup, and the remote was easier to use. 7.1 sound is wonderful, and not tiring. Wonderful sound too, with my Sennheiser headphones.
In addition to excellent sound, and easy setup, is the weight, and heat. The Yamaha is 30+ pounds lighter than the Onkyo, and runs very cool. I use a fan on top of the receiver. Even with the fan, the Onkyo ran very hot, and would power off from time to time. I don't believe I need the fan now, but I use it anyway.
I would recommend the RX-A830 to my friends.
Pros: Easy to setup, low weight, and low heat
Cons: Price a little high
I wanted an updated receiver so I could get AirPlay. Since I've had Yamaha from the beginning, I stuck with the line. I have been well pleased with their durability, value and sound. The RX A830 is no different. It worked straight out of the box and sounded great.
Pros: Airplay was simple to set up using Crutchfield's instructions. The sound is gorgeous. Movies, music, just plain old television, is much better. Works with everything I have. Even has an iPhone/IPad app to make remote control easy.
Cons: Now I want a bigger screen TV and a better Blu-Ray Player. Really, that is the only disadvantage I have seen.
The sound and remote app are excellent. The problem with the unit is the advertised use of Sirius and Pandora is grossly inaccurate.
Neither service works after the initial use. There is apparently a well know problem with both services. Yamaha has been working on a fix for some time with no end in sight.
So if you purchase the unit thinking you will be streaming music through either service you will be as disappointed as I am.
Pros: Good sound and app
Cons: Sirius and Pandora do NOT stream. Please google the issue before buying.
Purchased this to replace an old RX-v861 that stopped working due to a lightning strike. Using this to power 5 different rooms in the house and it handles the job just great. In addition to the airplay the Yamaha app for android/ios allows much better control of source and volume from everywhere in the house then using a Harmony remote like I did with the old unit. Only complaint I have is that you can only access the on screen menu via HDMI, which would be fine in a home theater setup but using as a whole house unit makes initial setup a little difficult.
Pros: Airplay, Pandora, Android/IOS app.
Yamaha Sound Great. Easy to use and plenty of Power.
Pros: Great sound. Outstanding nothing comes close for the price.
Cons: Price is high. But you pay for what you get.
About 7 months ago I purchased a Yamaha RX-A720 from Crutchfield as a gift for a relative and have been most impressed with it's sonic performance and build quality. My Onyko TX-SR507 receiver starting having HDMI issues, so it was time for me to replace it with something other than an Onkyo. The Yamaha RX-A830 was on my short list due to my positive experience with the RX-A720 and need for incrementally more power than it offered. I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase from Crutchfield. The Yamaha RX-A830 YPAO system measures up to 8 different listening positions and produces a sonically pleasing and accurate soundstage. I was able to bi-amp my Klipsch WF-34 speakers and they have never sounded better. The build quality of the receiver appears to be first rate and the unit's amplifiers do not get hot like my previous Onkyo. The Yamaha RX-A830 has all of the features that most audiophiles are seeking and integrates seamlessly with my Panasonic TV and Blu-ray player. Additionally, and very important to me, is that the Yamaha is manufactured in Malaysia, not China. Crutchfield shipped out my purchase very quickly and well packaged (Important to me because shipping carriers these days tend to handle packages like sanitation workers handle trash bags). Thanks Crutchfield!
Nice Receiver I do think Yamaha could do a better job with the marketing specifics. If I had known there was no line level control for zone 2 I would have stepped up to the 1030. Otherwise it's great!
Pros: Sound quality
Cons: Zone 2 control

Aventage Series: The Aventage line of Yamaha AV receivers is based on the audio design concept of providing a massive, full-bodied sound for movie sound effects and the accurate reproduction of music sources. By expertly harmonizing traditional and advanced technologies, every factor that affects sound quality, from materials & parts construction to circuitry layout, vibration damping, and "fine-tuning" the sound, is handled with no other thought than to achieve the best possible audio quality. As a result, every Aventage receiver has the ability to reproduce the most subtle details of high-definition sound, so that listeners can enjoy a truly high-class sound studio experience at home.
Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.
YPAO R.S.C. (Reflect Sound Control): YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds. Yamaha's YPAO-R.S.C. system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker settings.
Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-A830 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.
CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.
Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-A830 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using Presence Speakers, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-A830 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-A830 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-A830 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-A830 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A830 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
8 HDMI Inputs/2 HDMI Outputs: The Yamaha RX-A830 AV receiver is fitted with eight HDMI (v.1.4) inputs and two HDMI (v.1.4) outputs to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video signals. The two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same audio/video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously. The HDMI 1.4 jacks support 1080p and 4K video signals; as well as 3D video and ARC functionality. Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, and auto Lip-Sync compensation is also supported via HDMI. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.
Note: When you output a video signal from both HDMI outputs simultaneously, the receiver outputs the video signal at the highest resolution that both TVs connected to this unit can support. For example, if you are have connected a 1080p TV and a 720p TV, the receiver will output 720p video through both HDMI outputs.
MHL-Compatible HDMI Port: One of the receiver's eight HDMI inputs is on the front-panel and MHL compatible. This MHL compatible HDMI port provides easy, direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.
HDMI Standby Through Mode: When the RX-A830 is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's no need to turn on the A/V receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.
Analog Video: The RX-A830 AV receiver offers both composite and component analog video jacks.
4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-A830 is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale video signals from analog (480i/480p only)-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K resolution.
Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing: In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally.
Background Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-A830, you can select any video input, and listen to AM/FM radio or select songs from a USB device at the same time.
Ethernet LAN Port (optional WiFi): The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server, or Internet Radio. There is also a rear-panel USB type-A port (5V/0.5A) that allows you to connect Yamaha's YWA-10 wireless network adapter (022YWA10, sold separately) for a wireless network connection.
DLNA 1.5/Windows 7 Certified: The RX-A830 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. You can use your PC to play high-bit rate music content through your audio system, or use the RX-A830 to browse and play music files on your hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the AV receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's on-screen menu (via HDMI). The Yamaha receive supports the playback of the following music files.
Note: The AV receiver supports the following music servers - (1) PC with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed, (2) PC with DLNA/UPnP Certificate server software installed, (3) NAS with DLNA/UPnP certification.
Internet Radio: The Yamaha RX-A830's network connection provides access to Pandora and vTuner Internet Radio. You can control the Internet Radio services from the AV receiver's remote control and on-screen menu (via HDMI). The receiver will display station name, album name, song title, and elapsed time on your HDMI-connected television.

AirPlay: This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means it can accept wireless music streaming from your iPod touch, iPhone or iPad; as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy your iTunes music from your mobile Apple iOS device or computer on your home theater system. You can even view metadata such as song title, artist name, as well as album art via AV receiver's on-screen display. In addition, you can download Apple's free "Remote" application and use your Apple device as the remote control for your iTunes account.
Note: To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.2.2 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.

If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese.
Scene (for One-Touch Start): The RX-A830 features four Scene buttons on the front panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. These buttons are initially set to default settings for Blu-ray/DVD viewing, TV viewing, Internet Radio listening, and AM/FM Radio listening. Each can be reprogrammed to any input and any soundfield. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other Scene settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, TV Sports Viewing, and Action Game Playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. The Scene names can also be changed.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.
Multibrand Remote Control: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). In addition to the receiver, the remote can be programmed to control multiple brands of TVs, Blu-ray players, DVD players/recorders, DVRs, VCRs, etc.
HDMI Control: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the HDMI control function, which allows you to operate external components via HDMI. AV Controller App: This AV Controller App (free) will turn your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad or Android device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. This App provides the flexibility to control input, volume, mute and power commands. You can browse content from all internally available sources such as Internet Radio, USB and AM/FM tuners. You can also control all AV receiver zones such as powering on and changing input for each zone. This App not only controls the Yamaha AV receiver, it also controls Yamaha Blu-ray Disc Players, supporting various functions including Play, Stop and Forward. In addition, you can browse music stored on your Apple iOS or Android device and wirelessly transfer the content to the Yamaha A/V receiver for playback.
