This receiver combines time-tested Yamaha design elements with cutting-edge features like HDMI digital video compatibility, XM Radio, advanced auto calibration, and exceptional three-room flexibility.
This THX® Select2-certified receiver delivers 120 watts x 7 channels of Yamaha's clean, high-current amplification. It also offers exclusive THX processing enhancements designed to transform all of your movies, music, and TV shows into convincingly theater-like sound.
HDMI digital video capability
HDMI compatibility lets you switch easily between two high-def sources like an HDTV receiver and an HD DVD or Blu-ray player while maintaining phenomenal picture quality for both. And thanks to analog-to-HDMI conversion for your older, non-digital video sources, all you need to connect your receiver to your TV is a single HDMI cable. You'll never have to switch inputs on your TV again you can perform all source-switching with a few simple button presses on the receiver's remote.
The 'V1600 also lets you re-assign 2 to 4 surround amplifier channels to power stereo speakers in other rooms, or even on your back porch. This lets you play 3 different audio sources in 3 different areas of your home at the same time, without the need for any additional amplifiers. Yamaha even includes a second remote that, when used in conjunction with an optional remote control extender system, gives you control of your system from your 2nd or 3rd listening rooms.
Easy, accurate home theater setup
Yamaha's YPAO auto-calibration system enables quick, easy, and remarkably accurate home theater setup. Plug in the included microphone and place it in your favorite seat. The receiver analyzes the size, volume, relative distance, and frequency response of every speaker in your home theater, adjusting the settings for each one individually. In under three minutes, your surround sound is optimized for your specific room and speakers.
Yamaha quality inside and out
Yamaha's meticulous design standards include a rugged anti-resonant chassis, top-notch internal components, and an oversized, low-noise power supply. Eight of Burr-Brown's finest digital-to-analog converters handle your digital sources with extreme precision. Yamaha RX-V1600 Reviews
Average Customer Review:
HDMI is the way to go.
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
When reading the instructions, it appears to be confusing. It's not, if you have HDMI components. I was able to get rid of the rats nest behind my entertainment center. All I needed to purchase was HDMI cables.
This is an excellent receiver with plenty of power. Just make sure you have a powered sub-woofer. Also I would recommend getting the banana jacks for hooking up all your speakers. My only other suggestion would be to invest in a fan motor to keep it a little cooler.
Sit back and enjoy.

Features and Specs
THX Select2: The Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver has a THX Select2 Certification for delivering optimal quality audio and video presentations to small- and medium-sized home theaters. THX technologies found in this receiver include:
- THX Re-EQ: Re-EQ compensates for "edgy" or "bright" movie soundtracks that are originally mixed for large cinemas where the speakers are placed farther away from the listener.
- THX Timbre Matching: Due to location, the tonal quality of the perceived sound coming from the side surround speakers is changed in relationship to the sound coming from the front speakers. Timbre matching solves this sound field problem by restoring and integrating the perceived frequency match between the front and surround speakers, placing the audience in the center of the action.
- THX Adaptive Decorrelation: If the listener is sitting closer to one surround speaker than the other, the sound collapses to the side instead of enveloping the listener as it should. Adaptive Decorrelation subtly adjusts one surround channel's time and phase relationship with respect to the other surround channel. The listening position is expanded, providing the listener with the same spacious audio experience as in a movie theater.
- THX Advanced Speaker Array: THX Advanced Speaker Array digitally optimizes the four speaker surround field for content specifically mixed in environments for movies, music, and games, to be played back over the convenience of one 7.1-channel home theater speaker system layout.
Cinema DSP Digital: Yamaha's proprietary Cinema DSP (Digital Soundfield Processing) Digital technology goes beyond Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, which uses relatively simple matrix and steering techniques to create surround sound effects. Cinema DSP Digital draws on a huge memory of real-world data from actual venues, especially for the music programs, and input from movie sound technicians to deliver a more realistic surround experience.
Quad-Field Cinema DSP: Yamaha's latest technology, Quad-Field Cinema DSP creates four independent soundfields (Front, Surround Left, Surround Right, and Surround Back) that merge to envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. Movies and music have accurate sound localization, smooth movement across the sound space, exceptional clarity, and realistic presence.
Silent Cinema: The Silent Cinema mode allows private listening of multi-channel music or movies, with an accurate simulation of surround sound, through ordinary stereo headphones.
Night Listening Enhancer: During low-volume listening, such as late as night, dynamic range suffers and some sounds are missed. The Night Listening Enhancer offers two modes, Cinema and Music, each with three levels of effect, to ensure you don't miss movie dialog or quiet passages, or lose overall surround spaciousness.
Video Upconversion: Video up-conversion allows analog video signals from composite, S-video, and component video sources to be output as digital video signals through the HDMI output. These signals can be set to 480i or 480p. In addition, component video signals can be output as S-video or composite signals, S-video signals can be output as composite or component video signals, and composite video signals can be output as S-video or component video signals. You cannot convert HDMI input signals to any other type of signal.
I/P Conversion: You can convert analog video signals output from the component monitor output from interlaced to progressive. This includes signals input at the composite, S-video and component video jacks. In addition, you can separately de-interlace the analog video signals input at the composite, S-video and component video jacks and output at the HDMI output jack. The connected TV/monitor must be compatible with progressive video signals if de-interlacing is activated.
YPAO Technology: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer), which helps you automatically achieve highly accurate sound adjustments. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:
- Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each speaker.
- Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the timing of each channel.
- Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate low-frequency crossover for each channel.
- Parametric EQ: Adjusts the frequency and the parametric equalizer level of each channel to reduce coloration across the channels and create a cohesive sound field. This is particularly important if you use different brands and sizes of speakers, or if you have a room with unique sonic characteristics.
- Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.
Parametric Equalizer: In connection with YPAO technology, the RX-V1600 employs a parametric equalizer with frequency adjustments in one-third octave increments between 63 Hz and 16 kHz, gain adjustments in 0.5 dB increments between -20dB and +6dB, and Q factor adjustment values between 0.5 and 10.
Graphic Equalizer: In order to match the tonal quality of the center, surround L/R, surround back L/R, and presence L/R speakers with that of the front L/R speakers, the receiver has a graphic equalizer. You can adjust 7 frequency bands: 63 Hz, 160 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 6.3 kHz, and 16 kHz. The gain can be adjusted between -6 and +6 dB.
Digital ToP-ART/High Current Amplification: Yamaha uses the Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which combines the latest and best technologies, parts, and circuit designs, to maximize sound quality. High Current Amplification uses superior quality components from input to output to achieve high current power with low impedance.
Wide-range Frequency Response: The receiver's wide-range frequency response, 10Hz to 100kHz, allows you to enjoy the full fidelity of DVD-Audio and Super-Audio CD players.
On-screen Display: You can display the operating information of the receiver on a video monitor, through the composite, S-video, component video monitor jacks or HDMI out jacks. You can select Full Display, Short Display, or Display Off. Note: Video conversion feature must be turned on to use the On-screen Display.
Presence Speakers: The receiver has a pair of speaker terminals that can be used for Presence speakers or for driving a pair of speakers in Zone 2. The presence speakers supplement the sound from the front speakers with extra ambient effects produced by Cinema DSP. These effects include sounds that the filmmakers intended to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambience. The Presence speakers should be placed at the front of the room about 1-3 feet outside the front speakers. Note: You must select in the menu whether the speaker terminals are being used for Presence or Zone 2/3.
Dialog Lift: When Presence speakers are in use, you can activate the Dialog Lift feature, which assigns some of the front and center channel elements to the presence speakers to "lift" the dialog to a higher position. The effect of the Dialog Lift can be set between 0 and 5, with the higher adjustments reflecting a higher position of the front/center channel sound.
Dialog Normalization (Dial Norm): Dialogue Normalization is a feature of Dolby Digital and DTS to keep the programs at the same average listening level so the user does not have to change the volume between Dolby Digital and DTS programs. When playing back software encoded in Dolby Digital and DTS, a display indicates how the program level relates with the THX calibration level. You can then adjust the volume up or down to match the calibrated theatrical levels, if desired.
Three Zone Capability: The RX-V1600 allows you to play different sources in three separate zones. The receiver has two pairs of stereo preamp outputs and two pairs of speaker terminals that can be assigned for Zone 2 or Zone 3 use. Only sources that are connected via analog audio inputs can be output to Zones 2 and 3. You can control the receiver from the second or third zone using the supplied Zone 2/3 remote control when an infrared signal repeater system is used. If you're using the preamp outputs in the second and/or third zone, a separate amplifier or stereo receiver with a pair of speakers, or a powered speaker system are required.
XM Satellite Ready: You can listen to XM Satellite Radio by connecting the XM Mini Tuner and Mini Tuner Home Kit to the RX-V1600's proprietary plug. A 50' extension cable is available if the Home Kit's 25' cable is not long enough. XM Satellite Radio offers over 150 commercial-free channels of music, news, sports, comedy, talk, and entertainment to choose from--all in digital quality. During XM playback, you can display the channel number and name, category, artist name, and song title on the front panel. Note: A subscription is required in order to receive XM Satellite Radio.
Neural Surround: Neural Surround has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcasts of XM HD Surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements.
192kHz/24-bit DACs: The RX-V1600 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.
