About the Yamaha RX-V379

Deia Z.

Get thrilling sound on a budget

If you're looking for an affordable way to bring better sound into your home, the Yamaha RX-V379 is a great foundation to build on. For years I envied my dad's surround sound system, but didn't have room in my budget for all the components. I finally picked up a 5.1-channel receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers, and noticed a major improvement in sound quality right off the bat. Not long after, I added a center channel speaker, followed by a pair of tower speakers and then a subwoofer. Each addition to my system brought a new appreciation for good sound, and I also had a convenient hub to connect and control all of my entertainment sources.

Once I had the full 5.1 system in place, I tested it out with one of my favorite Blu-ray movies. There's this quiet scene where a mosquito buzzes around a hospital room, and I could've sworn it was in the living room flying around my head. No joke, I almost reached for a magazine to swat it. I've been hooked on surround sound ever since.

Yamaha's AV Setup Guide for iOS and AndroidT

Yamaha's AV Setup Guide for iOS and Android™ tablets walks you through each step of the connection process.

Yamaha technology helps you build your system gradually

If you start out with just one pair of speakers like I did, the RX-V379 can simulate actual surround sound in a stereo setup. Yamaha's Virtual Cinema DSP setting mimics a five-channel system without the extra speakers so you don't have to wait to experience surround sound effects from your favorite movies. Worried about where you'll place your surround speakers once you have them? You can line them all up in the front of the room if you need to, and Virtual Cinema Front reflects sound off your walls to make it sound like the speakers are all around you. And if you're working with smaller speakers, the Extra Bass setting gives them more low-end output than they'd normally have, for more theater-like impact from special effects.

Easy setup and operation

Yamaha's AV Setup Guide app for iOS and Android™ tablets makes it easy to connect your speakers and sources to the RX-V379, taking you through the process step-by-step with illustrations to guide you. The YPAO calibration system uses an included setup microphone to analyze the acoustics of your room and optimize your speakers' performance for the best possible audio experience. Once you're all set up, you can control your system easily with Yamaha's quick-access Scene buttons. If you want to watch a Blu-ray, all you do is press the appropriate button on the front panel or remote, and the receiver powers on, switches to the right source, and calls up your saved surround sound settings.

5.1ch AV Receiver: The Yamaha RX-V379 AV Receiver is equipped with a 5-channel amplifier rated at 70 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.9% THD, driving 2 channels) which provides high dynamic power with low-impedance drive capability. The RX-V379 also includes a single LFE (mono-subwoofer) output for connecting a powered sub. The AV receiver employs high-quality components for great sound.

    • Discrete Amplification: This AV receiver utilizes discrete amplification to achieve a high level of sound clarity.
    • 192kHz/24-bit Burr Brown DACs: The Yamaha RX-V379 uses high quality, audio-grade Burr-Brown 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all channels to maximize sound quality.
    • Low-Jitter PLL Circuitry: The Yamaha AV receiver utilizes low-jitter PLL circuitry to help optimize sound imaging. The result is a more dynamic sound with greater detail and less distortion.

YPAO Sound Optimization: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Wiring: Checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each.
    • Speaker Size: Checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel.
    • Speaker Distance: Checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel.
    • EQ: Each channel has a parametric equalizer; choose one of three target settings before running the setup.
      • Natural: adjusts all speaker to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright
      • Flat: use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics
      • Front: EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system
    • Volume Level: Checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-V379 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1ch surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Settings: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes: Panorama (sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect), Dimension (adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room), and Center Width (moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers).
    • Center Image (DTS NEO: 6 Music): This parameter adjusts the front left and right channel output relative to the center channel to make the center channel more or less dominant as necessary.

Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialog, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.

    • Movie Soundfields: Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie, Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game
    • Music Soundfields: Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Chamber, Cellar Club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, Music Video, 5ch Stereo
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.

Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-V379 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.

    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Virtual Cinema Front: With Virtual Cinema Front, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

Straight Decode: Straight Decode lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When the Straight Decode mode is enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-V379 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V379 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either of the front speaker or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V379 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30dB to +15dB in 5dB steps, or to +16.5dB (full volume range is -80dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80dB to + 16.5dB in increments of 0.5dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V379 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: The Yamaha AV receiver is equipped with one optical (toslink) digital input and two coaxial (RCA) digital inputs capable of handling 2.0-5.1ch/32-96kHz audio.
    • Analog Input: The receiver is also equipped with two rear-panel stereo RCA analog audio inputs and one front-panel minijack (3.5mm) audio input
    • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for the front speaker outputs and spring terminals for the center and surround outputs. The amplifier supports 6- to 8-ohm for all speaker connections.
    • Headphone Jack: The Yamaha RX-V379 is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphone, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha RX-V379 AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The RX-V379 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning). You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations.

    Video Section

The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.

    • 4K/60Hz + HDCP 2.2: This unit supports the latest HDMI standards thanks to the transmission of 4K video @ 60 frames per second on all HDMI inputs and output (pass-through only). The receiver's HDMI 4 input and HDMI monitor output also supports HDCP 2.2 which fully complies with the latest copyright protection, a standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 3D Ready: The Yamaha RX-V379 AV receiver supports 3D HDMI pass-through from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the RX-V379's HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.

    Q
I plan to use this receiver with the HDMI video only output of my 2009 Mac Mini. Rather than use a dedicated audio cable in addition to the HDMI (again, video only) I was hoping to stream the audio via Bluetooth and the video via HDMI. Is it possible to use both simultaneously in this fashion?

No, the source selector selects a single video and audio input. The Bluetooth is an audio input for streaming the music. The HDMI cable should carry both audio and video if your computer will allow the audio to be output to the HDMI, however.

It can stream audio from any device that supports Bluetooth version 2.1+EDR w/ A2DP or any device that has a newer version than this. The newer versions should be backwards compatible.

I want to purchase the Yamaha RXV379 but I have 5 speakers, 2 are rear. I noticed there are no rear speaker connections. How can I connect them? Also I noticed set-up used an iPad and I do not own one. How do I set up?

There are connections for rear speakers and also for a subwoofer on the back of the amp. I send my rear speaker signals through a Rocket Fish wireless connection, but sure you can run wires to the rear speakers. I did not use a cell phone to set my amp up. I just used the remote. I have not yet linked my cell to the amp using the bluetooth link. And for bluetooth you don't need an iPad.

I have the identical set up and everything works fine. Once you get the manual, you will see how the rear channels are set up. Also, you don't really need an iPad to set it up. The setup also comes on a CD and you can use a laptop to set up, or you can do everything with the remote. The hardest problem is figuring out how to set up external connections such as an Apple TV, and a set-top box. It is doable, but neither the manual nor the setup guide is particularly informative. If you think logically through the flow of electrons and information, it will soon dawn on you.

Have an old yamaha rx795-85 channel power rating, i have a big room. dumb question, but what is the real sound difference in the power, considering oid amp 15 yrs old?

It does not take much power (about 40 watts) to drive a speaker to normal listening level. Older amps have more noise (hiss) hearable at very low volume levels, but not normal volumes. I have an old amp (1973) that still works great at normal levels. Buy a new amp for the features, not power.

my wife just wants to use the TV speakers and the cable remote. does the receiver have to be on all the time or does the cable signal pass through without the receiver power on??

Unless there is a special setting that I am unaware, the receiver has to be on in order for my system to work. The TV, cable box and sound do not function without the receiver. Good luck!

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Unfortunately, we don't sell the Chromecast product, but from the research I've done it looks like it shouldn't be an issue. Need to chime in here.Sounds like you have a single speaker in each room for ??? - If it is for music distibution, You would need to get a sperate stereo or mono amp and then 1 - run 4 wires to each room speaker and buy what is called a "stereo" speaker. That is a single speaker with a left and right input. OR 2 - Run your source music player into a Y cable that will combine left and right to a mono amp and drive the speakers You do want your home theater amp to drive your whole house music dstribution speakers (you can do it but its a pain). My advice is 4 wires to each room speaker - a seperate stereo amp AND VERY IMPORTANT - a speaker selector. You cannot run more that 2 speakers directly off the left or right side of your stereo amp - it will fry or shut down. Speaker slector lets you choose which speakers are on and make the amp thinks it sees only 1 speaker set ven though there are many, Hope this clears that up.

No. Five speakers plus subwoofer. max. No "second room" / "B" speaker set option.

Nope. It'll handle 5 speakers since it's a 5.1 AV receiver, meaning that it'll handle right and left front and rear speakers, a center speaker, and a base driver (hence the 5.1) all situated in the same room. i don;t think that this is the optimum system for your application.

There are only connections for 5 speakers. Center, front (L&R) and surround (L&R). Full specs and review are on CNET website.

Does the yamaha rxv379 receiver have an audio delay/advance capability to sync sound with TV graphics?
    paul  Sep 05, 2015

    A
LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yamaha has excellent power, and is often underrated at that. So that receiver will give a nice push to just about any setup. For a smaller to Medium sized room, and a compact cleaner look, I'd go with something like the all in one 5.1 speaker package from Definitive Technology. ProCinema 400BK; For something more traditional with larger speakers, for medium to larger rooms, I'd go with something from Polk as a nice starting point; The Best thing about that receiver, and Yamaha in general, is that they sound great with every brand really. The specs say "70 watts per channel into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.09% THD, with 2 channels driven." When you're driving 5 channels for home theater, how many watts are driving the front left and right speakers? (I have rather power-hungry front speakers; the others are not too demanding.)

Watts per channel will stay the same. They just test with two channels as a standard reference. Unless you play death Metal at ear bleading volumes - you should be fine.

Our specs also list 70 watts as the 5 channels driven number on this receiver.

You can also plug the Apple TV into an empty HDMI jack on your TV set. If you are using an optical cable/HDMI ARC connection between the TV and Receiver, it will work. I used this means for connecting a combo VCR/DVD playback deck.

You can certainly connect an Apple TV to this receiver. To make sure you get the cables that you will need for the best connection, I'd recommend contacting an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
