We're always impressed by how much value Yamaha can pack into their affordable line of home theater receivers. There's a lot to love in the RX-V477, from network connectivity for wireless music listening, to customizable surround options to immerse your home theater in sound. Don't have a home theater? You will, once you add speakers to this receiver along with all your sources, from cable and satellite boxes to disc players and gaming consoles. The 'V477 will ensure they all place nicely together to turn movies, music, TV, and video games into exciting sonic adventures.
Of the 'V477's many inputs, perhaps none offers as many possibilities as the Ethernet port. Use it to connect your network router to the receiver and access music from a networked computer or portable device. If you have an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®, you can stream music wirelessly to the receiver with AirPlay for playback on your home theater speakers. The receiver itself has built-in support for Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify (subscription required), and free Internet radio streams from stations around the world. Download Yamaha's free AV Controller app to your Apple or Android device for easy navigation of your receiver's features and use your smartphone or tablet as a Wi-Fi® remote. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network.
If you have an iPod or iPhone, plug it into the RX-V477's front-panel USB input. This creates a direct digital connection, bypassing your device's digital circuitry in favor of the receiver's superior digital-to-analog converters. This lets you enjoy your digital music files with rich, detailed sound. You can also use the USB input with thumb drives loaded up with your favorite tunes. You can even play high-resolution FLAC and Apple Lossless files, so you can enjoy the enhanced detail and dynamics of these formats. The 'V477 supports gapless playback from USB and network sources, so you won't have that annoying gap of silence in between tracks on a live album.
Download Yamaha's free AV Controller app for iOS® and Android to use your smartphone or tablet as a Wi-Fi remote.
Other cool features include Yamaha's DSP listening modes, which allow you to optimize surround sound to your taste and mood. With the AV Controller app, you can even tweak the sound of these listening modes by adjusting parameters manually using a touchscreen interface to widen the soundstage or add more reverb. "Extra Bass" ensures you get more low-frequency output, even when using smaller bookshelf speakers for your front channels. Having a hard time finding a place for those rear surround speakers? Virtual Cinema Front can simulate surround sound even when all your speakers are placed in the front of the room.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
This receiver was a replacement for a 20+ year old receiver I had been using. The sound quality is amazing and being able to use all of my speakers has really increased my movie-watching experience. The instructions were very straight-forward and the speaker tuning for my space was very easy. I got a great deal on a nice receiver, couldn't be happier!
I'm surprised I'm giving this receiver a 5-star rating, because I almost never find anything "perfect." But in the case of this Yamaha, you get a very easy to use and easy to setup no-frills HDMI-capable receiver that sounds impressive at a bargain price. This was purchased for my 63-year-old mother who is not what you would call a "technophile." She wants to know which buttons to press to watch her shows and nothing more. This receiver is incredibly easy to operate and has a sound quality beyond its price tag.
Pros: - Easy to use for a technophobe - Easy to setup - Sounds impressive
Cons: - None
I have always liked Yamaha products and this receiver is no exception. Easy to set up. Runs all my components and looks great. I like the smaller size.
First, I am very satisfied with my purchase, which was an upgrade from the V377, since I wanted native Pandora access. I almost want to take away a star for the remedial onscreen Control interface, however the Yamaha Android AV Controller app is the bomb and made up for it. The sound through my Yamaha Surround Speakers is fantastic. Pandora works great and I'm also able to access my music collection across my home network. It works seamless with my Sony 4K TV and DVD purchased through Crutchfield. Not sure what else I could want and am enjoying my purchase immensely. Got a great open-box price too that beat Amazon.
Pros: Sound, 100% Banana Jack Speaker connections, # of HDMI inputs, Android Controller App. programmability, DSP settings
Cons: Onscreen native control interface
Having a previous positive experience with Yamaha receivers and liking sound and feature set and this price point, Yamaha was an easy choice this time. We choose the the v477 because it has a little more power for the polk tsx330t used with this system, only needed 5.1 channels, and did not need built in wifi as the receiver is connected to the router via a wired connection. The sound quality is excellent for the price of the reciever.
Basic setup is straight forward. The YAPO mic worked well and improved the overall sound. Connected to a Samsung TV using ARC and power and volume on the receiver can be controlled with the TV remote. Start the blu ray player and the TV switches to the appropriate audio input automatically for simple operation.
The iPhone/iPad AV app works great. Has enough features that after the initial setup we have not touched the units remote
Pros: All of the features work well.
Cons: Not really a Con, but a review of the owners manual while the unit is being shipped will ease the setup and maximize the feature set.
This is a wonderful product that gives you high quality sound for good value. I would highly recommend this product to anyone that is looking for a great deal!!
Crutchfield Customer Review
Pros: I'm a returning Crutchfield customer who needed to replace an old Onkyo Receiver. This is a tremendous upgrade from my old receiver with lots of new features and better quality. The price was right and the recommendations I got from customer service was invaluable in configuring the receiver with my Bose Acoustimass 10.
Cons: none. it works perfectly.
Nice receiver, very easy to set up, excellent radio reception compared to my old Onkyo. Plenty of power for my 5 speaker + sub set up in a large family room. Crisp clear sound. My only complaint is that I would have liked bass/treble controls. Sound is a little too heavy on the treble for me.
Pros: Price, ease of set up, radio reception
Cons: no bass/treble control
Very good price for a great product.
Lose this receiver so far, upgraded from a Denon to this one to have HDMI only devices in our setup (e.g. fewer cables). The audio setup was awesome with the provided microphone. I haven't tried the DLNA supported feature yet or the App for the iPhone (though the reviews for it are low). Happy so far,
Pros: Great surround sound for movies and TV.
Cons: What someone else has mentioned and I noticed - While listening to music the sound is not full and balanced unless the listener is in the "sweet spot" area of the room. Also notice the subwoofer doesn't always kick in, and when it does there is a "click" when you hear it happening, like a relay being triggered, which I thought was odd.
Out of the box the TV and movie surround sound features are great with with this receiver. However I'm not completely impressed with the music programs Yamaha provides. The speakers being used are the Difinitive Pro Cinema 600's and the RX-V477 replaced a comparable Onkyo receiver that crapped the bed 2 months after the warranty went ran out (sometimes you end up with a product made on a Monday after the that big game on Sunday). The Onkyo did an excellent job filling a my medium sized living room with balanced sound in music mode. The Yamaha seems to struggle getting full rich balanced sound, the rear speakers sound "tinny" unless the listener is situated in the sweet area of room. Using the custom features this receiver offers, I'm having trouble dialing the treble out to balance the sound in the whole room. The custom features are very easy to figure out using the options buttons on the remote before having to resort to the instruction manual which is on a CD and printable as a PDF file. This Yamaha does better with movie and TV surround than anything thing else I've owned but leaves me wanting when it comes listening to music.
Pros: Great surround sound for movies and TV.
Cons: While listening to music the sound is not full and balanced unless the listener is in the "sweet spot" area of the room.
This receiver is great for my application, it is the heart of my entertainment system.
Pros: With all the HDMI inputs it was easy to setup.
Cons: Have not found any yet
Purchased this receiver for a new 60" TV and Blu-Ray player we bought and found that the lack of analog inputs/output on the various new pieces precluded using the H-K and Yamaha stereo amps I have. We needed HDMI and especially the HDMI pass through feature to allow watching TV sans surround and receiver. Setup was a bit confusing, made far worse by the lack of a printed manual. (Actually it seemed more difficult than building and setting up a high end PC) Fortunately, Crutchfield has the best customer service I have ever used. I was a customer of car audio in the early 1990s, and they could not be beat, but it is a rare, rare business that gives even better customer service now. The FM receiver is awesome and very sensitive, even without the antenna. Teamed with the Polk Blackstone TL-250 and PSW-111 is really delivers punch in our small TV room. With surround, the movie Master and Commander felt as if you were in the captains cabin with creaking and noise all around. If you switch to larger stereo speakers it makes my old Bose 301s really sound great from rock to Wagner. Thanks for you help and service...
Pros: Great sound, intense surround separation. Good FM, and lots of custom features we are just beginning to discover. Great support of the minor cons.
Cons: Relatively complex initial setup to synchronize the various remotes and sequences. Lack of a printed manual for set side research.
We ordered the RX-V477 to replace a 10yo Onkyo that lacked HDMI inputs. Initial set up was a breeze and the unit sounds great in our basement family room. I dont care to use the furnished remote but the Yamaha phone app is convenient and works well once you add the unit to your LAN. No problem adding the unit and our new configs to an older Harmony universal remote either.
Great Sound, Easy to setup.
Easy set up and packed with excellent features that take advantage of new "smart devices". Don't forget to first update the firmware via ethernet or wifi (it's going to make life easier).
Pros: iPhone/Android app is great for controlling device (e.g., can change location of sound by sliding your finger on the screen) Many rich sounding sound effect modes Controls smart devices with HDMI 1.4 (e.g., turns off your TV through HDMI cable) Integrates well with Pandora, but your phone needs to be updated to the latest version or you'll have to run it through the amp and not the phone As always set-up tech support is what you get from Crutchfield (can't get that at Best Buy) YAPO is grea
Cons: Low power output: won't do the job for big speakers (pick up the amp and feel how light it is compared to higher priced amps) I've had 4 Yamaha amps and can confirm that their set up is always complex, compared to others. If you have a choice of Best Buy/Amazon vs Crutchfield, buy Crutchfield as they'll help you set it up over the phone and get the best sound out of it.
I needed a great, relatively inexpensive home theater AVR and this fits the bill. There's plenty of parity when it comes to AVRs in this price range. What clearly sets the Yamaha RX-V477 apart is great sound. Sure, it's full of bells and whistles - except for WiFi but I knew that going into it - but where it really shines is clear, clean sound. Got some help and advice from Crutchfield through the buying process as well. Overall, I'm very happy.
Pros: Clean power, great sound. Easy to setup.
Cons: None. I did my homework and knew what to expect.
love it so far
Pros: works great
Cons: separate bass and treble would be nice.
great system. The sound is so clear and the Bass is very deep. works great for all my systems hooked to it. I would definitely buy another one. Yamaha is where its at.
Easy to step up. Sounds great. Still playing around with it. No complaints so far. Although it only has 4 HDMI connections, I only needed 3. Shipping from Crutchfield was prompt as usual. Good recommendation from the Crutchfield staff.
Pros: Looks good, sounds good, instructions are clear and easy to understand.
Cons: None noted as this point.
I needed to replace a Denon that died after only 3 years. I wanted to try another brand ms wanted easier setup than Denon. Crutchfield recommended the Yamaha. Setup was very quick and easy and unit overall is much easier to use than Denon. Importantly, the sound is great. I am very pleased.
Pros: Ease of setup, sound quality
Cons: Can't deactivate unused inputs so you don't have to scroll through them when switching.
Fantastic product--this product was BETTER than I anticipated. Blows away my previous Onyko
Pros: Shipped immediately-----Sound quality superb.
Cons: Set up was a little confusing---directions could be better
I purchased this receiver to replace another Yamaha receiver that is over 20 years old and has been from Germany, to California to Virginia, So, I am impressed with their quality. This unit was purchased for a 5.1 surround sound setup and it really is geared toward this application. For an old fashioned stereo system, I would stay with a two channel receiver. The audio options are almost too much; you will have a few hours combing through the choices. Sound quality is typical Yamaha "Natural Sound," which of course is awesome. I did add a 400 W JBL subwoofer to the system and do recommend playing with the subwoofer's and amp's crossover settings to get the best bass response.
Pros: Sound quality Audio options
Cons: None - I would whole heartedly recommend this unit!
I replaced a perfectly good Pioneer Receiver because it lacked HDMI ports and I was thus running the ROKU through the TV speakers for audio. I did a lot of work researching the new receiver and for better or worse selected the Yamaha RX-4V477 (Crutchfield recommended the choice). Installation was easy and the hook-up and sound are fine,
Pros: Yamaha's fine reputation; Chrutchfield support. Easy to understand instructions, and easy to install,.
Cons: The Logitech Remote did not like the fact that both the tv and the Blueray are connected to HDMI1 as per the Owner's Manual. I changed the Blueray to HDMI 4
The receiver is everything was looking for to put in my small theater room. It worked just fine for me to 5.1 system I didn't need anything bigger for my size of room or speakers. Always have had Yamaha receivers in the past still would not change. Love all the different movie and music settings and love the changes you can make when using their app on my phone, also was impressed by the calibration and the microphone. sounded pretty good after that few changes needed. My opinion once again Yamaha once again makes good quality will continue to buy. Also Crutchfield customer service and techs are the best in the world for helping me make informed decisions on product for my situation and my budget, not disappointed yet.
I came to read reviews of this product and read the review by "M., Bridgewater, MA". I had similar issues with one of my subs and found that I only needed to use an adapter with polarized grounding similar to this one.
It works great, but I swapped for the Yamaha RX-V577, it has a lot more feat. for only a bit more (bi-amp and Wi-Fi ready, for example) other than that, its great !!!
I had a Yamaha receiver for many years that developed speaker hum. So much so that I had to stop using it. Based upon a Crutchfield recommended purchased a surge protector but alas the hum continued. Was never a high priority to replace, however finally saved up enough to replace it. Worked w/ Crutchfield support and worked through trouble shooting of the new unit subwoofer not working. Diagnosis subwoofer defective. Brought in for repair and confirmed working. Attached subwoofer to another receiver - worked fine. Appears issue is isolated to new receiver. By the time I find enough time to break down the set up and return it, the warrant will likely have expired. Using it without the subwoofer if a disappointing experience but better than the hum. Will go without for a year or two and replace with another brand once I have enough in the budget.
Pros: Easy to hook up, slick integration with other components. Reasonable cost.
I've used a few Yamaha receivers over the years, they've never let me down. I use my RX-v459 daily still. The RX-V477 is a solid piece of equipment.
Pros: -Easy, intuitive setup. I performed a speaker test, adjusted the speaker level and had it on my network in under 10min. This is without referencing any manual -Yamaha's iPad app is extremely easy to use and can be customized. It was great to be able to rename the hdmi inputs to something meaningful. -Great sound for the price -built in Ethernet jack is nice
Cons: -On screen display's font could be better -No built in bluetooth

Yamaha's Total Purity Concept: The Yamaha RX-V477 AV Receiver incorporates Yamaha's Total Purity Concept for the finest sound quality. The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology, and independent pure power supplies. As a result, this AV receiver can provide high-quality sound for your movie & music soundtracks.
YPAO Technology: This unit employs the YPAO (Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer), which automatically adjusts the output of the speakers based on placement, performance, and the room's acoustic characteristics. Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.
Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-V477 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1ch surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.
Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added); you can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB from the receiver or remote control. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.
Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-V477 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-V477 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-V477 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V477 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V477 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Note: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V477 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
HDMI (v.1.4): The Yamaha RXV477 AV receiver is fitted with six HDMI (v.1.4) inputs and one HDMI (v.1.4) output to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video signals. The HDMI 1.4 jacks support 1080p and 4K video signals; as well as 3D video and ARC functionality. Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, and auto Lip-Sync compensation is also supported via HDMI. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
HDMI Standby Through Mode: When the RX-V477 is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's not need to turn on the A/V receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.
Analog Video: The RX-V477 AV receiver offers both composite and component analog video jacks.
Background Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-V477, you can select any video input, and listen to AM/FM radio or select songs from a USB device or Network source at the same time.
Ethernet LAN Port (optional WiFi): The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network to access your DLNA music server, or Internet Radio. There is also a rear-panel USB type-A port (5V/0.5A) that allows you to connect Yamaha's YWA-10 wireless network adapter (022YWA10, sold separately) for a wireless network connection.
Internet Radio: The Yamaha RX-V477's network connection provides access to Pandora and Spotify online music services, as well as vTuner Internet Radio. You can control the Internet Radio services from the AV receiver's remote control and on-screen menu (via HDMI). The receiver will display station name, album name, song title, and elapsed time on your HDMI-connected television.
|Pandora||Pandora is free, personalized radio that plays music and comedy you'll love. Just start with the name of one of your favorite artists, songs, comedians or composers and Pandora will create a custom station that plays similar tracks. You can also rate (thumbs up/thumbs down) songs as they play, and Pandora will adapt stations to your feedback. You can even bookmark up to 100 stations and easily switch between favorites.|
|Spotify||Spotify is a digital music service that gives you on-demand access to one of the largest music libraries in the world (over 15 million tracks and counting). Spotify makes it easier than ever to discover, manage, and share music with your friends. You can browse music by artist, album, track, or most popular; and create your own music library with customized playlists. A Spotify Premium subscription is required.|
|vTuner||You can also listen to Internet radio stations using the vTuner Internet Radio Station database service particularly customized for this unit, providing a database of numerous radio stations around the world. You can search for Internet Radio stations by Location, Genre, New, Popular, or Podcast.|
DLNA Certified: The RX-V477 is DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) 1.5 and Windows 7/8 compliant for audio networking. This means it's easier for you to access and enjoy digital music stored on your PC. You can use your PC to play high-bit rate music content through your audio system, or use the RX-V477 to browse and play music files on your hard drive. You can control playback of your streamed audio files from the AV receiver's remote control. The receiver also supports ID3-Tag and META tag information so song title, artist name, and album name can be displayed from the unit's on-screen menu (via HDMI). The Yamaha receive supports the playback of the following music files.
Note: The AV receiver supports the following music servers - (1) PC with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed, (2) PC with DLNA/UPnP Certificate server software installed, (3) NAS with DLNA/UPnP certification.
HTC Connect: HTC Connect lets you stream MP3 and AAC music files to the Yamaha AV receiver wirelessly from a compatible HTC Connect mobile device. You don't need a separate app because HTC Connect is built right into your HTC smartphone. Simply swiping the HTC smartphone screen starts music output to the AV receiver, from the HTC device's stored music library or online music apps. Click here for HTC Connected compatible smartphones.
AM/FM Tuner: The Yamaha RX-V477 AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The RX-V477 lets you store up to 40 AM/FM station presets. This can be done manually or automatically (auto-preset tuning). You can set this receiver to automatically match FM broadcast frequencies in stereo, or convert the frequency to monaural for weaker stations. An indoor FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included with the receiver.
Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates normally take approximately 20 minutes or longer. The test A/V receiver contained firmware version 1.04 (as of 3/27/2014). Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.
USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable MP3 players, or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with USB HDDs). Your USB mass storage class device must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32 .You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. Apple Device Compatibility Chart: Using the Lightning- or Dock-cable that came with your Apple device to connect directly to the Yamaha AV receiver, iPod/iPhone compatibility is as follows (as of 1/15/2015):
|Apple Device||Generation||Tested Version||Connector Type||Media Type||Control Type||Display Type||Charge|
|USB||AirPlay||Audio||Video||Remote||iPod/iPhone||Album Art||Artist/Song Text||Track Info|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
On-Screen Menu: The RX-V477 offers an on-screen menu system via its HDMI output. This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. Scene (for One-Touch Start): The RX-V477 features four Scene buttons on the front-panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.
ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.
Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control): The Yamaha AV receiver supports HDMI-CEC, which synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI. When the AV receiver is connected to a HDMI-CEC compatible TV, they will turn ON/OFF together and you can use the TV remote to control the volume of the receiver. HDMI-CEC also provides playback functionality with other components, such as your Blu-ray player. For example, you can use the receiver's remote control to operate player functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, or Stop.
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.
AV Controller App: Download Yamaha's free AV Controller App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.1+) device and turn your mobile device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network as the Yamaha AV receiver.
AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (4.0+) device for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.

Yes. [ DARRYL May 11, 2015 ]
I Do believe that it does support it on HDMI 1 [ Mike M May 10, 2015 ]
Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable. [ Jeff May 08, 2015 ] Staff

this unit does not have phono connections. [ HERSHEL Jan 07, 2015 ]
Well the wire to the phono receiver is DC so make sure you have it positively charged. If you accidentally make it negative you may run into a power surge (aka fireworks). As for the ground wire, it might be DC as well, you might want to google that. Just use some duct tape and plug that thing into the wall with some copper wiring. Might do the trick ;) [ ANDREW P Jan 03, 2015 ]
I don't have a turn table to hook up to. [ JANET Jan 01, 2015 ]
You would need to use a phono preamp. This should have a ground connection as well. The preamp will connect to an audio input such as cd. [ DARRYL Dec 31, 2014 ]
A pre-amp must be purchased as an interface between receiver and phono. They are inexpensive. The ground wire can be connected to the receiver chassis. Hope this helps. [ DONALD Dec 31, 2014 ]
No phono preamp here [ JONATHAN M Dec 31, 2014 ]
So, the way I understand this is: The TV is Hi-Def but has no HDMI inputs, only Component Inputs. You want to connect a unit, say a Blu-Ray, to the Yamaha with HDMI and get the signal out of the Yamaha to the TV using the Component outputs instead of the HDMI output. I would think that it would work fine like that but we have not tested it in that manner. Robert should be able to download the Owner's Manual from Yamaha and find that out in the instructions. [ MARSHALL Jan 02, 2015 ]
Thank you for responding. I think you are right. It seems hdmi inputs can only feed hdmi outputs. I am researching a product now called hdfury (hdfury 2-component specifically). It is the only thing I have found so far that looks like it can successfully convert from an hdmi output to a component input. I am trying to avoid being forced to purchase a new monitor when I am very happy with my pioneer wide screen high def pre-hdmi set. Thanks again. [ Robert Jan 02, 2015 ]
Hey, Robert. I'm not an expert, but I have attempted what you are asking. Unfortunately, you cannot use HDMI cords into the receiver to feed component video cables that run to the TV. As you stated, HDMI can only run to HDMI. However, you can run components into your receiver, and have them go out through HDMI, it just doesn't work yhr other way around. I don't believe it's receiver specific either. I'm pretty confident that it is just a general rule. Hope this was useful! [ CHRISTIAN Jan 02, 2015 ]
Set surround mode for 2 channel [ JOHN W Dec 09, 2014 ]
Yes, you can use this receiver as a stereo receiver. Just connect the left & right front speaker. This will let you use am/fm, cd, ipod or even connect it to the internet stream music. [ Thomas Dec 08, 2014 ]
Yes. Assuming that you only have the two floor standing speakers, simply connect them to the Front L and Front R speaker terminals on the back of the RX-V477. [ DAVID Dec 07, 2014 ]
It is a 5.1 receiver. It will provide signal to 5 speakers plus a subwoofer. The key is that not all CD's or DVD's have that information. I am not sure that using just the right and left speaker connections will give you stereo sound. The Crutchfield technicians should know. [ ROGER Dec 07, 2014 ]
I don't see why not. I have the Bose AM5 cube speakers up front, Bose center channel speaker as well as the Bose 161 rear speakers. [ FREDERICK J Dec 07, 2014 ]
Yes you can. I am running two B+W Matrix 803 S2 speakers. [ JMHIlls Dec 07, 2014 ]
I am not using a NAS, but I do push this unit quite hard and it just keeps coming back for more. [ ALLISON Dec 10, 2014 ]
While I am happy with the Yamaha receiver, I do not have it connected to the TV with a NAS. My connections are via cable and WiFi. But now that the NAS subject has been brought up, I would also be interested in the way to connect the system in this manner. Thanks. [ JOSE A Dec 06, 2014 ]
You would first have to see if the NAS device is compatible with the formats spelled out in the specs section of the unit. If you're not using a display you will have a difficult time seeing everything through the front digital display of the receiver. With that said, you will connect the compatible device to the front USB port and switch your input to USB in the receiver. This is where the TV will come in handy so you can see all of your files. In order to get a pic through the display you''ll need an HDMI. Once you switch to the appropriate input you simply scroll down and find the file you'd like to share and play. [ RAMIRO Dec 06, 2014 ]
Sorry, I have not used it with a NAS. [ Robert Dec 06, 2014 ]
It connects to the internet and blue tooth very well. [ DENNIS Apr 23, 2014 ]
