Yamaha-ppy

This was my first venture into a home theater system. I am pleased with the purchase. I like Sony (have a Sony Bravia 46" LCD HDTV, and Sony BluRay), but went with the Yamaha based on availability, reviews, and needs. Using Polk speaker system, with 5 (Center + 4 and Sub) rather than 7. I have a larger-than-average living room, and the sound I get is excellent: clean, full, without rumble or tin. I used MonsterWire, which may be overkill, and banana connectors, which look clean and the sound is solid. I am running DirecTV HD, so the channels look and sound great. I agree that 2 HDMI inputs limits options for upgrade, but it works for me. The manual is a bit cryptic, but I'm getting there. Crutchfield service, as always, dependable and thorough.

Competent AV Receiver
Written By
Mike, Arizona on Saturday, April 18, 2009
This receiver provides a competent and functional receiver for my home theater while providing clean and transparent power for my music listening. The straight signal mode allows the source processing to come through clearly and unhindered but if you like Yamaha processing modes this unit has a wide variety to suit most audio tastes.
The only con for some people may be the small amount of HDMI inputs (2 in 1 out) and somewhat limited video processing options for lower resolution inputs.
If those items are not high priorities in making your selection this receiver would be a fine choice.

Works well enough but...
Written By

This receiver works well enough. One issue though - I had the cable box connected to the receiver via HDMI and then from the receiver to the TV via HDMI. Frequently (maybe 70 to 80% of the time) when changing channels, the TV screen would go black for up to five seconds. I can't figure it out. I've since connected the HD DVR straight to the TV via HDMI and used an digital audio cable to connect the HD DVR to the receiver. I don't have the problem any more but that defeats the whole purpose of buying this receiver (for the HDMI inputs and outputs).

Exceptional Value for Money
Written By
Steve, York, PA on Monday, March 23, 2009
I am very impressed by the sound quality of the receiver and the video upconversion to HDMI. Listening to audio from my PC's optical output with the receiver in Pure Direct mode was stunning to say the least.
I had some difficulty setting it up because the binding posts do not handle soldered wire very well (the ends of my speaker wire were soldered to prevent them from fraying). As soon as I cut off the solder and stripped them to the recommended 1cm everything was fine. The included microphone and automated speaker detection & leveling works really well at learning the configuration of your speakers in the room. Mine is paired with the Bose Acoustimass 10 system, and I was impressed with the automatic mixing of the surround & surround back channels since my speakers are only 5.1.
My only beef with Yamaha is the steep price increase to get the additional inputs on the RX-V863. An extra $400 for another HDMI in and two optical ins is a little steep. It would be nice to have those inputs at this price level.
Overall, if you're looking for a good receiver for your home theater system at a very aggressive price point, the RX-V663 is a very good value and performs exceptionally well.

Diehard Bows to Yamaha
Written By
Peter K, Northeastern, NC on Saturday, March 07, 2009
The receiver's performance is quite remarkable for a mid-priced system. Video up conversion makes older video discs seem near HD quality. Mated to Polk speakers (RM6880), the reproduction of all types of music is very impressive. Played Jane Monheit at the Rainbow Room (older DVD) and the results were wow. Played Rolling Stones Shine A Light (Blu-ray disc) and the results were double wow! As a purist, I went with raw speaker wires directly to the receiver binding posts which are well-designed and handled bare wire easily. Receiver works well right out of the box and gets better as you learn more about the various settings/options. Pros: Too many to list since I'm still learning about the many features available. Cons: No turntable direct input - need pre-amp. No direct LAN connection for video and audio downloads. Highly recommend this receiver to first time buyers as well as those looking for a replacement system. Great product by Yamaha.
