A good home theater receiver does more than just route signals from video and audio sources to your TV and speakers. Sure, the Yamaha RX-V677 has all the inputs and outputs you need to hook up lots of gear. But it can also transform video signals from older components like DVD players into crisp HD and Ultra HD images. It can improve the clarity of dialogue while you watch a movie or a TV show. And it lets you listen to radio stations halfway across the world while you browse other exotic choices on your smartphone. Powering seven speakers across two rooms is just the tip of the iceberg for this receiver.
By adding Wi-Fi to the RX-V677, Yamaha has made it easier than ever to enjoy wireless music from computers, smartphones, and tablets. If you have an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®, you can stream music wirelessly to the receiver with AirPlay for playback on your home theater speakers. The receiver itself has built-in support for Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, SiriusXM, and free Internet radio streams from stations around the world. Download Yamaha's free AV Controller app to your Apple or Android device for easy navigation of your receiver's features and use your smartphone or tablet as a Wi-Fi® remote. Plus, the app allows you to control the receiver and stream music from your smartphone without a network connection using the V677's Wireless Direct technology.
The RX-V677 features a 7-channel amplifier and outputs for nine speakers. That means you've got some flexible options for how you set up your speakers. You can connect 7 speakers in your main room, for intense home theater sound that takes advantage of Blu-ray's 7.1-channel surround mixes. Then you'll still have connections to set up speakers in a second room, so you can listen to music in Zone 2 while the rest of the family enjoys a movie in surround sound in the main zone. Yamaha's app makes it easy to control the receiver from your second zone, automatically switching off the 6th and 7th speakers in your main zone when Zone 2 is powered on. You can also use those extra outputs for "Front Presence" speakers in the main zone, for an even deeper and higher soundstage for movies and TV shows.
If you have an iPod or iPhone, plug it into the RX-V677's front-panel USB input. This creates a direct digital connection, bypassing your device's digital circuitry in favor of the receiver's superior digital-to-analog converters. This lets you enjoy your digital music files with rich, detailed sound. You can also use the USB input with thumb drives loaded up with your favorite tunes. Connect a compatible smartphone into the front-panel MHL input to watch videos upscaled to HD on your TV, or enjoy all your digital music on your device through your home theater speakers. You can also play high-resolution FLAC and Apple Lossless files, so you can enjoy the enhanced detail and dynamics of these formats. The 'V677 supports gapless playback from USB and network sources, so you won't have that annoying gap of silence in between tracks on a live album.
Yamaha's free AV Controller app for Apple and Android lets you control the player and stream music from your smartphone or tablet (not included).
Other cool features include Yamaha's DSP listening modes, which allow you to optimize surround sound to your taste and mood. With the AV Controller app, you can even tweak the sound of these listening modes by adjusting parameters manually using a touchscreen interface to widen the soundstage or add more reverb. "Extra Bass" ensures you get more low-frequency output, even when using smaller bookshelf speakers for your front channels. Having a hard time finding a place for those rear surround speakers? Virtual Cinema Front can simulate surround sound even when all your speakers are placed in the front of the room. And Yamaha's advanced YPAO speaker calibration takes wall reflections into account for accurate sound tailored to your room.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
High quality product. Easy to set up and produces excellent sound. Able to connect everything we wanted.
Pros: Quality and number of incoming port options so you can include everything; blue ray, multiple game systems, cable system, etc. Sound is fantastic and powerful.
Cons: Can't hook up a component based system and include sound unless you use a coaxial cable.
Outstanding receiver ! Loaded with features ! Impressive, high quality sound and power true to the Yamaha brand. The user interface is intuitive and easy to program. The LED display is big, bright and clear. Easy to setup and my new surround sound home theater sounds amazing ! Very pleased with this unit !
Pros: Sound quality, power, loaded with features. Easy to setup and program.
Cons: Buttons on the remote are quite small . Difficult to read all of the functions printed on the buttons.
I replaced a Yamaha RX-A1000 with a Yamaha RX-V677 about 2 weeks ago & have sufficient experience to provide a review. My environment is all-Acoustic Research speakers in a 5.1 configuration, a Yamaha Blu-ray DVD player, Sony CD player, Apple TV box, Panasonic VCR player ( I still watch tape recordings), Samsung basic 55-inch HDMI TV and Comcast service - relatively basic configuration. Let me state that I'm not an audiophile - I wouldn't be able to distinguish a Burr-Brown DAC with a ESS Sabre DAC receiver. I'm familiar with Yamaha products and decided to stay with Yamaha. My RX-A1000 receiver got zapped by a surge over my Comcast line and, while it is still functional, I lost 3 HDMI ports. This along with my desire to use AirPlay & have wireless connectivity provided sufficient impetus for me to replace it - but with what? I considered buying a RX-A1040 which is the current descendent of the RX-A1000, but when I balanced the feature set of the RX-A1040 vs the RX-V677 and the fact that the RX-A1040 cost about twice as much as the RX-V677, I went with the RX-V677. This decision was aided by the fact that Crutchfield provides a 60-day like it or return it policy. Well, so far I believe I made the correct decision. Being a senior citizen my hearing is a little impaired and I determined I likely would not perceive the difference in acoustic characteristics between my old RX-A1000 and the RX-V677 - and that turns out to be correct. I recommend the RX-V677.
Pros: Relatively straight forward setup Abundant hook-up ports Excellent Yamaha AV app Dialogue lift feature HDMI 720p to 1080p upscale Scene feature
Cons: Remote controller not back-lit capable Remote controller relatively complex
Was exactly what I wanted to replace an older model. Sound is great and your staff was right on in helping me with a problem during set up with my existing speaker system.
Pros: Great features for the price and quality that Yamaha delivers.
i was surprised .. i thought my system before was good sound this is right out of the box better sound.. easy to setup some issues but common sense won out..
Pros: VG sound, easy setup, lots of features.. i really like having two zones..
Good power, clarity, pricing, features, easy set-up, easy to use- love the wifi, pandora etc. My speakers actually sound better, especially the rear surrounds. My TV picture even looks a little better
Pros: Power, price, sound, features, wi fi
Cons: None yet
Great receiver previously had a Yamaha but wanted some of the new features and the air play and dual areas that sound can be sent is great
Pros: quality sound, great features for staying in tune with todays surround sound needs and very good support from Crutchfield rep on which model to buy
The Yamaha RX V677 it has replaced a Sony ES model . This receiver has all the decoders that are needed for great blu-ray audio.excellent HDMI switching with on screen display. It has enough power to drive all my speakers with booming sound when I want it.The instructions were easy to follow & the set up went very smoothly. I have connected all my equipment to the RX V 677 which includes a BLU RAY everything works flawlessly.
Pros: 6 HDMI inputs, digital audio inputs , Upconverts video signal from all devices, easy to use.
Cons: The speaker terminals are a bit tight.
After researching for several weeks I could not find a AV Receiver that had the features that the RX-677 for the money. The specs are good and the phone app works great. Setup went without any glitches and works great. One thing I'd recommend for anyone that has a lot of digital music is a NAS drive. After setting up the network the receiver connected to the NAS drive and we were listening to all of our stored music for the first time in quite a while.
Pros: Features are the same as receivers that are several hundreds more expensive. Set up was not complicated, the on screen instructions work great.
Cons: None at this point.
I now have it setup and running. However, I needed to contact Crutchfield twice and Yamaha once to resolve all the problems in setting up the Zone 2 sound. The most frustrating issue was not have a printed manual and only a CD manual. So what is someone to do, go back and forth between the TV/Amp and PC to figure how to configure the system. What a bunch of bull in the name of Green (saving trees) or is it just cost savings in not providing a printed manual. And one last point, the volume control display is in negative DB and no way of changing it to a "Mute to 1-100" display. I have never heard of such a thing. Oh well, I would not buy another Yamaha again.
Pros: Hard to list any Pros other than it kinda works now.
Cons: See above comments.
I purchased this receiver as a replacement for my old Sony ES receiver. I was mostly looking for a receiver with features like 3D pass-through and built-in WiFi (which my Sony did not have.) I also was looking for a receiver that would be somewhat "future-proof" without costing an arm and a leg. The feature set of this new Yamaha fit the bill. Also, I had an old Yamaha 2092 receiver back in the day (since handed off to a friend) which I liked quite a bit, so I have come to regard Yamaha as a quality brand. To be honest, the weight and seeming build-quality doesn't exactly match the heft and feel of the Sony I had used before, but the performance seems to be there. Also, as mentioned, it has a lot more features. So far, I am happy with the sound quality, especially with movies.
Pros: features, bang for the buck, brand reputation for quality
Cons: seems lightweight, could be better aesthetically

Yamaha's Total Purity Concept: The Yamaha RX-V677 AV Receiver incorporates Yamaha's Total Purity Concept for the finest sound quality. The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology, and independent pure power supplies. As a result, this AV receiver can provide high-quality sound for your movie & music soundtracks.
Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.
YPAO Automatic System Calibration: The Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Additional YPAO technologies include:
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker setup settings.
Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-V677 supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added); you can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB from the receiver or remote control. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.
Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-V677 AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-V677 offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-V677 employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V677 AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V677 allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Note: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V677 offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
HDMI 2.0: The Yamaha RXV677 AV receiver is fitted with six HDMI 2.0 (5 rear/1 front) inputs and one HDMI 2.0 output to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video signals. The HDMI 2.0 jacks support 4K/60Hz and 1080p video signals; as well as 3D video and ARC functionality. Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, and auto Lip-Sync compensation is also supported via HDMI. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-V677 is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale video signals from analog (480i only)-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K resolution.
Front-Panel HDMI/MHL Port: One of the receiver's six HDMI inputs is on the front-panel and MHL compatible. This MHL compatible HDMI port provides easy, direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones, like Android. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge (5V/1A) your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.
HDMI Standby Through Mode: When the RX-V677 is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's not need to turn on the A/V receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.
Analog Video: The RX-V677 AV receiver offers both composite and component analog video jacks.
Background Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-V677, you can select any video input, and listen to AM/FM radio or select songs from a USB device or Network source at the same time.
Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network. The unit also offers built-in WiFi (IEEE 802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz) for a wireless network connection; WPS, WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP), WPA-PSK (AES), WPA2-PSK (AES) security protection is supported. Either network connection gives the receiver access to your DLNA music server and various online music services. Wireless network setup can be done via WPS button, Access Point Scan, Manual Setting, PIN Code, or even through your Apple iOS device (5.0+).
Internet Radio: The Yamaha RX-V677's network connection provides access to Pandora, Spotify, SiriusXM, Rhapsody, and vTuner Internet Radio online music services. You can control the Internet Radio services from the AV receiver's remote control and on-screen menu (via HDMI). The receiver will display station name, album name, song title, and elapsed time on your HDMI-connected television.
|Pandora||Pandora is free, personalized radio that plays music and comedy you'll love. Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates normally take approximately 20 minutes or longer. The test A/V receiver contained firmware version 1.15 (as of 6/10/2014). Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.
USB Port: This AV receiver is equipped with a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable MP3 players, or USB thumbdrives (not compatible with USB HDDs). Your USB mass storage class device must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32 .You can use the receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI) and remote control to navigate your stored music files on your connected USB memory device. Apple Device Compatibility Chart: The Yamaha AV receiver supports the following Apple devices and functionalities (as of 1/15/2015):
|Apple Device||Generation||Tested Version||Connector Type||Media Type||Control Type||Display Type||Charge|
|USB||AirPlay||Audio||Video||Remote||iPod/iPhone||Album Art||Artist/Song Text||Track Info|
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
Advanced On-Screen Menu: The RX-V677 offers an on-screen (GUI) menu system through its HDMI output. The simple on-screen display combines text and graphics that make setup and other operations extremely easy. If your TV is connected to the composite video or component video monitor output, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display when changing settings. You can set the receiver's on-screen menu language to English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, or Chinese.
Scene (for One-Touch Start): The RX-V677 features four Scene buttons on the front-panel and remote to make operating the receiver easier. Pressing a Scene button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button; such as powering on the receiver, switching to the appropriate source input, and recalling the selected DSP surround mode.
Zone 2: The Zone 2 feature allows you to set this receiver to reproduce separate input sources in the main zone and the second zone (Zone 2). The receiver has dedicated stereo RCA outputs for Zone 2, or the built-in amplifier can be configured to power speakers in the second zone connected to the Extra Speaker terminals. By using the RCA outputs on the AV receiver you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1ch surround in the main room and play a different stereo audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by your optional integrated amp. By using the speaker-level outputs on the AV receiver you can directly connect a secondary pair of speakers in another room of your home, allowing you to listen to 5.1 surround sound in your main room and play a different stereo audio source in the other room. When the receiver is powering speakers in Zone 2, the surround back speakers in the main room are turned off (limiting you to 5.1ch in the main room). The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by the AV receiver
Note: Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network source exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select "Network Server" for Zone 2 when "USB" is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to "Network Server".
Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV, FLAC, and ALAC music files via USB or DLNA.
Input Rename: You can rename each input so the display reflects the actual source; choose from 15 templates or create an original name, up to nine characters.
Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.
ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.
Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function.
Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.
IR Remote Control: The receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC).
HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control): The Yamaha AV receiver supports HDMI-CEC, which synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI. When the AV receiver is connected to a HDMI-CEC compatible TV, they will turn ON/OFF together and you can use the TV remote to control the volume of the receiver. HDMI-CEC also provides playback functionality with other components, such as your Blu-ray player. For example, you can use the receiver's remote control to operate player functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, or Stop.
Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.
AV Controller App: Download Yamaha's free AV Controller App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.1+) device and turn your mobile device into a Wi-Fi enabled remote control for the Yamaha AV receiver. Your Apple iOS or Android device must be connected to the same home network as the Yamaha AV receiver.
AV Setup Guide App: Download Yamaha's AV Setup Guide App (from Apple's App Store or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iOS (6.0+) or Android (4.0+) device for assistance with connecting cables between the Yamaha AV receiver and your source devices as well as AV receiver setup. This app guides you through various settings including speaker connections, TV and source device connections, plus assigning the power amplifier. Once you have completed the setup guide, settings from this app will automatically be copied to your network-connected AV receiver for quick and easy setup.
Remote Connections: The RX-V677 offers a variety of remote connections.

In iTunes, choose airplay button and make sure the receiver is checked. On receiver input choose airplay and the two devices should connect. Has worked like a charm for me. Very pleased with the RX-V677. [ DAVID E Mar 03, 2015 ]
Both mobile or whatever device from where you are trying to play and Yamaha receiver should be connected to same wifi, otherwise AirPlay etc don't work .. Then only app also recognizes device also. [ Durga Kiran Mar 02, 2015 ]

Sorry, I returned the Yamaha and replaced it with a comparable Sony AV system whose features I preferred. Your problems may have something to do with your WiFi connection. Please try connecting to your router with an Ethernet cable to see if you will have better results. Good luck. [ EDWIN C. Dec 31, 2014 ]
Thanks. The Quantum router is dual band (2.4 and 5). Not sure how this affects things, but will do some further investigation. [ Ken Dec 31, 2014 ]
Ken, I also have a Yamaha RX-V677 that I put in operation Dec 9. I have it networked to an Apple Airport Extreme router with Comcast internet service. I have no problem streaming Pandora and streaming from my Apple TV via a HDMI cable. I perceive that the Yamaha RX-V677 can only communicate via the 2.4 Mhz band -- so if your router is on the 5.0 Mhz band you might have a problem. [ EDWARD Dec 31, 2014 ]

Yes you can. i am already using airplay from my ipod and ipad directly with no blu-tooth adaptor [ ELAN Jun 20, 2014 ]
Sorry J P but I am just now doing my setup and cannot answer your question at this time. Better that you ask someone more tech oriented than I. [ JACK D Jun 20, 2014 ]
Page 76 of the manual covers Airplay. I did not see Bluetooth mentioned. Disclaimer: I am blissfully ignorant of the Apple ecosphere, but after some research I recommended the RX-V677, because of its apparent compatibility, to a friend who is an Apple addict. I bought the RX-V677 myself for entirely different reasons, principally Yamaha's implementation of YPAO Volume and DRC (Dynamic Range Control), both on page 88. Based on my previous experience, it appears that Yamaha designers have an excellent grasp of full range musical reproduction at far less than concert volume. After I install my receiver we will see how well this generation works. [ EDWIN C. Jun 20, 2014 ]
AirPlay works best over wi-fi network and it also works on bluetooth so it isn't a necessity. [ DAVID E Jun 20, 2014 ]
I have it hooked up on my network and i am able to play songs from an android and an iphone using a Yamaha app. Not sure if thats airplay or not. [ MICHEL Jun 20, 2014 ]
