If you're looking for a home theater receiver that's built for playing music from a computer or smartphone, you'll want to check out the Yamaha RX-V777BT. With Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Apple AirPlay, this receiver is ready to start streaming music from almost any wireless or network device. Add that to the ample connectivity you'd expect to find for all your audio and video sources, and you've got a pretty powerful hub for a versatile home theater. Movies will sparkle in crystal clear HD or Ultra HD, with sound effects that dazzle as your surround sound speakers come to life. Once you hear how this receiver immerses your room with sound, you'll wonder why you waited to take advantage of all that home theater has to offer. And if it's been a while since your upgraded your receiver, it's time to see what you've been missing.
By adding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to the RX-V777BT, Yamaha has made it easier than ever to enjoy wireless music from computers, smartphones, and tablets. Connect the included Bluetooth adapter and you can instantly stream music wirelessly from any smartphone. If you have an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®, you can also stream your entire iTunes library wirelessly to the receiver with AirPlay. The receiver itself has built-in support for Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, SiriusXM, and free Internet radio streams from stations around the world. Download Yamaha's free AV Controller app to your Apple or Android device for easy navigation of your receiver's features and use your smartphone or tablet as a Wi-Fi® remote. Plus, the app allows you to control the receiver and stream music from your smartphone without a network connection using the 'V777BT's Wireless Direct technology.
The RX-V777BT features a 7-channel amplifier and outputs for nine speakers. That means you've got some flexible options for how you set up your speakers. You can connect 7 speakers in your main room, for intense home theater sound that takes advantage of Blu-ray's 7.1-channel surround mixes. Then you'll still have connections to set up speakers in a second room, so you can listen to music in Zone 2 while the rest of the family enjoys a movie in surround sound in the main zone. Yamaha's app makes it easy to control the receiver from your second zone, automatically switching off the 6th and 7th speakers in your main zone when Zone 2 is powered on. You can also send video out to a second display — perfect for a home theater with a projector and an HDTV.
If you have an iPod or iPhone, plug it into the RX-V777BT's front-panel USB input. This creates a direct digital connection, bypassing your device's digital circuitry in favor of the receiver's superior digital-to-analog converters. This lets you enjoy your digital music files with rich, detailed sound. You can also use the USB input with thumb drives loaded up with your favorite tunes. Connect a compatible smartphone into the front-panel MHL input to watch videos upscaled to HD on your TV, or enjoy all your digital music on your device through your home theater speakers. You can also play high-resolution FLAC and Apple Lossless files, so you can enjoy the enhanced detail and dynamics of these formats. The 'V777BT supports gapless playback from USB and network sources, so you won't have that annoying gap of silence in between tracks on a live album.
Yamaha's free AV Controller app for Apple and Android lets you control the player and stream music from your smartphone or tablet (not included).
Other cool features include Yamaha's DSP listening modes, which allow you to optimize surround sound to your taste and mood. With the AV Controller app, you can even tweak the sound of these listening modes by adjusting parameters manually using a touchscreen interface to widen the soundstage or add more reverb. "Extra Bass" ensures you get more low-frequency output, even when using smaller bookshelf speakers for your front channels. Having a hard time finding a place for those rear surround speakers? Virtual Cinema Front can simulate surround sound even when all your speakers are placed in the front of the room. And Yamaha's advanced YPAO speaker calibration takes wall reflections into account for accurate sound tailored to your room.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
This was a great step up from my old Sony component-input receiver! So far, I have only used The RX-V777BT for DirectTV and audio (not tried BlueRay) - so far, I am very impressed. The audio (CD or AirPlay) is great - the Pure Direct button is easily accessible on front to switch off DSP. My hearing has high end attenuation, so I like the treble and bass controls with this unit. Also, the dialog level boost is super useful - not just 'dialog lift' but level control too. I didn't find other units this price with that feature. Setup was ok, although I had problems getting ARC to work. Tried out the world famous Crutchfield tech support (you get the tel # on your invoice) and was surprised to get wrong info. The tech told me I could not get 5.1 from TV (Netflix) via ARC. I questioned this, but the analyst was adamant... didn't even ask my TV make/model. We got ARC working by simply unplugging and reconnecting power on unit and TV and then same with the HDMI lead (this was also in the manual, I found later) ... HDMI handshake issue. Now I get 5.1 from our TV Netflix plus all HDMI Control functions work like a charm, so our TV controller now controls volume and power on the RX-V777. No recurrence of handshake problem. The smartphone app is really good - so convenient controlling Party Zone mode and second zone which easily drives the speakers I have wired into 6 other rooms (via speaker switches. Electronic manual is ok - but then I am an engineer!
Pros: Features are amazing and audio sound meets my high expectations. Would be wrong to judge surround sound based on DirectTV Programs / channels - production quality varies greatly from show to show. But when it is good (eg movie on HBO) the sound is great!
Cons: None of significance. Learning curve was ok if you read the manual (will take you a while) so I guess setup could be more intuitive. Suggestion to Yamaha... since the unit has wi-fi, put a link to FAQs into each option of the on screen menu? That way, consumers have Immediate access to the latest relevant top 10 FAQs on each main menu topic as an on screen help.Crutchfield response on April 6, 2015 Thanks for your review, and sorry we missed the ball on the ARC handshake issue. We're glad to hear you got it working. There are lots of issues with ARC not passing 5.1, but that is of course dependent on models. We should have been more thorough and will follow-up on that aspect. Feedback like this helps keep our ever-growing knowledge and information database up to date.
After searching many manufacturers for a decent AV receiver under $1K, I decided on this one. Easy set up and built quality is high. I basically listen to jazz and classical music more than watching blu-ray movies but because the surround sound is so awesome on this unit, I am watching my collection again. Some reviewers experienced a harshness on music files, I too had this on first impression but after increasing my sub from a 12 o'clock position to 12:30 that booming bass was back but with a tighter thump. I noticed right away this Yamaha has a large upfront sound. Vocals and string instruments are more prominent. Piano licks are just stunning and I can "feel the steel." The YPAOT Reflected Sound Control has superb balance compared to my last receiver bought in 2008. I used a 3 mic position during calibration. I am hearing more midrange on songs than ever before. It has 'headphone' like quality especially while playing DTS-WAV files. This Yamaha receiver is driving my PSB T-6 tower speakers and bookshelf Axiom M3-V2's in back with a Dayton sub. When playing blu-ray movies the experiences is unbelievable. Enormous window of sound, big bass and the power is plenty. Blu-ray movies and streaming music apps have a bigger booming bass than on music files from a CD. I am streaming music via my Oppo B-R player. I find I have to set back the sub volume when watching a blu-ray or broadcast movies but turn it back up for playing music. I am very pleased with the Yamaha RX-V777BT.
Pros: Spectacular blu-ray movie sound, great for playing music files in all formats and built quality is evident. Easy setup and very good balanced power.
Hooked up this receiver in no time using the HDMI ports. Easy to set-up and implement. I am very please with Yamaha RX-V777BT and all it's features. Still need to set up Apple Airplay, but everything else was easy to setup. However, for some reason, after having Sirius / XM set up and working, it stopped working a few days later. Don't know if it is an XM problem or a receiver problem. Have not had time to get it resolved yet. Also, wish you could change the names of the inputs as displayed on screen (i.e. change HDMI 1 to something like SAT, etc.) Can't find any way to do this. Otherwise, everything works great. Thank you Crutchfield.
Pros: East setup. Powerful. Lots of options and features. Nice interface.
Cons: Can't rename the display names of the inputs.
Took awhile to set up just like I wanted it to sound but was worth the wait and effort it took.I preform the speaker calibration with multi. listening postions all 8. By putting the ypao microphone on a tripod and putting it at one listening postion in the center of the listening area it work the best. I have it hooked up at 7.2 with Front Presence speakers. For listening to music I use the front presence speakers. For movies I turn off the front presence speakers and use all four surround speakers. The surround sound for movies is just incredible. I am very please with Yamaha RX-V777BT and all the features it has that I am still playing with.

Yamaha's Total Purity Concept: The Yamaha RX-V777BT AV Receiver incorporates Yamaha's Total Purity Concept for the finest sound quality. The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology, and independent pure power supplies. As a result, this AV receiver can provide high-quality sound for your movie & music soundtracks.
Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. You can select from a variety of amplifier configurations.
YPAO Automatic System Calibration: The Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are (can be configured for up to 8 listening positions). First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the sound pressure level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Additional YPAO technologies include:
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker setup settings.
Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Yamaha RX-V777BT supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
Surround Parameters: The Yamaha AV receiver offers the following Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS NEO:6 audio adjustments.
Cinema DSP Soundfields: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha Cinema DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent soundfields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate soundfields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP programs for movies, music, and games.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added); you can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB from the receiver or remote control. The AV Controller App for Apple iOS and Android provides even greater adjustment of Cinema DSP soundfields.
Cinema DSP Modes: The Yamaha RX-V777BT AV receiver offers proprietary Yamaha Cinema modes so you can enjoy your movies and music even more in your home; regardless if you are using 5.1 speaker setup, only have a two-channel speaker system, or listening through headphones.
CINEMA DSP Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters of the Cinema DSP modes.
HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-V777BT offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of theses modes are enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channle sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.
Compressed Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3, WMA, and AAC. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Dialogue Lift & Level Adjustment: Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.
Dynamic Range Control: The Yamaha RX-V777BT employs two Dynamic Range Control functions.
Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V777BT AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.
Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V777BT allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.
Note: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V777BT offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.
HDMI 2.0: The Yamaha RX-V777BT AV receiver is fitted with six HDMI 2.0 (5 rear/1 front) inputs and two HDMI 2.0 outputs to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video signals. The two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same audio/video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously. The HDMI 2.0 jacks support 4K/60Hz and 1080p video signals; as well as 3D video and ARC functionality. Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, and auto Lip-Sync compensation is also supported via HDMI. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
4K Video Upscaling: The Yamaha RX-V777BT is capable of outstanding upscaling and i/p conversion quality. This AV Receiver will upscale video signals from analog (480i only)-to-HDMI and HDMI-to-HDMI, up to 4K. This means a much better picture with HDTVs capable of 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K resolution.
Front-Panel HDMI/MHL Port: One of the receiver's six HDMI inputs is on the front-panel and MHL compatible. This MHL compatible HDMI port provides easy, direct connection of MHL compatible smartphones, like Android. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver will also charge (5V/1A) your connected phone. Play, Stop, and other basic operations can be controlled from the AV receiver's remote control.
HDMI Standby Through Mode: When the RX-V777BT is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's not need to turn on the A/V receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.
Analog Video: The RX-V777BT AV receiver offers both composite and component analog video jacks.
Background Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-V777BT, you can select any video input, and listen to AM/FM radio or select songs from a USB device or Network source at the same time.
Wired or Wireless Network Connection: The Yamaha AV receiver is fitted with a RJ-45 Ethernet (LAN) port to connect the receiver to your home network.
