About the Yamaha YAS-105

Jeff Miller

Fits in any TV setup and improves your whole experience

Yamaha brought their YAS-105 sound bar here to Crutchfield so we could get a look and listen. It's just over two inches high, and can fit under a TV on a stand or flip around for wall-mounting below a TV hanging on the wall. This super-slim sound bar complements the looks of today's ultra-thin Tvs, while providing a significant upgrade to their lackluster sound. Everything sounds bigger and clearer — effects, dialogue, and music, too.

both wall and table

The Yamaha YAS-105 is compact and can be wall mounted or sit on a stand below your TV.

As I took my seat for Yamaha's training session, the YAS-105 looked so unassuming, I hardly noticed it sitting in the front of the room. That is until the Yamaha rep played a movie and the thrilling sound started pumping out.

Movies and TV shows sound great, no matter the room

We watched a scene from How to Train your Dragon 2, streaming on Netflix. Our training room is a converted installation bay, so it's not our best listening room — there are exposed ceiling ducts plus unforgiving concrete walls. Even so, the YAS-105 delivered clear dialogue over powerful effects. A scene where the protagonist is surrounded by a menacing-looking mob had a heightened sense of urgency thanks to rich, dramatic music filling the room.

Built-in amplifiers power six drivers for rich, full-range sound, with plenty of high-frequency detail. From subtle sounds like footsteps to louder effects like giant rolling boulders colliding, the small speaker's ample bass added a visceral realism — even to a cartoon! The YAS-105 includes Dolby® and DTS® decoding as well as Yamaha's digital surround processing to give movie and TV sound a more three-dimensional effect.

side view

The Yamaha YAS-105 sound bar sits just over two inches high so it fits neatly in front of your TV.

Play music wirelessly from your phone

After the training, I asked to hear some music. I've been to parties where the host will simply put on the cable Music Choice channel, and this sound bar connected to your TV could certainly fuel some festivities.

The YAS-105 has built-in Bluetooth, so the Yamaha trainer paired up his phone and played some tunes on Spotify. He plowed through several genres, and they all sounded nice and full. I was surprised at the amount of bass, but if you need more, Yamaha included a sub output to connect an external subwoofer.

Simple setup and one-remote operation

One cable is likely all you'll need to connect the YAS-105 to your TV. Choose from optical digital (included), coaxial digital, or a stereo mini cable. Use your existing TV remote to control power and volume commands, or use the included remote. You can also download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app. This turns your Apple® or Android™ smartphone into a Bluetooth remote.

Features

Soundbar Speaker System: The Yamaha YAS-105 is a slim, low-profile soundbar speaker system featuring the latest Air Surround Xtreme technologies from Yamaha and a 3-way driver system with two tweeters, dual midranges, and twin subwoofers that deliver a virtual 7.1-channel surround sound from a single speaker unit. The Yamaha is a great addition to your flat-panel TV, replacing your television's miniscule speakers with rich, virtual surround sound. The YAS-105 soundbar can be table-top or wall mounted below or above your television.

Air Surround Xtreme Technology: Yamaha's exclusive Air Surround Xtreme reproduces 7.1-channel surround sound with high quality, excellent imaging, and rich presence; far superior to that of the speakers in your TV. You'll experience an extremely realistic and impressive sound field, with clear dialogue in the front and dynamic sound action at the back and sides. You can also set the soundbar speaker system to Stereo.

Active Speaker System: The Yamaha YAS-105 soundbar combines two 0.75" balanced dome tweeters with two 2.125" midrange drivers, along with dual 3.0" down-firing subwoofers driven by a built-in 30W RMS x 2 channel (6, 1kHz, 10% THD) + 60W RMS x 1 channel (3, 100kHz, 10% THD) digital amplifier. Although compact, its excellent structural design provides a large volume enclosure for all speakers. The two 0.75" tweeters and two 2.125" midrange drivers are housed in a separate acoustic suspension chamber, while the dual 3.0" subwoofers are housed together in a separate bass reflex chamber for added efficiency and better bass response.

Dual-Driver Subwoofer Design: The dual subwoofers employ large magnets and large-diameter voice coils to realize dynamic and robust bass sound reproduction. This ensures that the overall sound has a rich sense of presence, making movie effect sounds more realistic. The YAS-105 employs dual side-firing bass reflex ports (for the dual subwoofers) that have a straight shape and adequate length to provide outstanding bass response together with the large volume cabinet. The duct outlets are shaped like a trumpet bell, which reduces wind noise for better sound clarity.

Audio Enhancements: The Yamaha YAS-105 soundbar speaker system offers several audio adjustments to enhance your listening experience.

  • Clear Voice: The Clear Voice function raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies, TV shows, sports commentary, and news broadcasts are more clearly audible. and dialog, so they are always in sync with one another.
  • Compressed Music Enhancer: The Yamaha YAS-105's Compressed Music Enhancer feature is optimized for Bluetooth audio transmissions to ensure that your music will have vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback.
  • Audio Delay Control (Lip Sync): This technology adjusts the timing of the picture and dialog, so they are always in sync with one another.
  • Bass Extension: Yamaha's "Advanced Bass Extension Processing" technology boosts the soundbar speaker's bass sound.
  • Independent Sub Level: You can adjust the soundbar speaker's subwoofer level independent from the speaker's overall volume.

Dolby Digital/DTS Compatible Digital Inputs: The Yamaha YAS-105 soundbar is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multi-channel movie sound. The YAS-105 soundbar is fitted with two rear-panel digital audio inputs. The active soundbar speaker features one optical digital input and one coaxial digital input. The soundbar's digital inputs support PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS audio signals (up to 5.1ch). There is also a stereo minijack (3.5mm) input for connection of an analog source or if your TV does not have a digital output.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box). That's why we recommend that you run separate digital audio cables from your TV, satellite/cable box, and Blu-ray player to the soundbar speaker for best sound performance.

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Yamaha YAS-105 soundbar speaker system supports Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming. This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device; such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, Windows Phone/PC, or Mac computer/laptop to the YAS-105 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • Multi-Device Pairing: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Up to 8 devices can be paired, but only one can be used at a time. Once paired, the YAS-105 will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the YAS-105 soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-105.

Control App (for Apple iOS/Android): The YAS-105 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller), available for free download for Apple iOS (5.1.1+) and Android (2.3.3+) devices. Download this app from the Apple's App Store or Google Play Store. This remote app makes it easy to control the soundbar via a Bluetooth connection; including input selections, master volume, surround modes, and other settings.

Remote Control: The YAS-105's IR remote control is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power On or Off, adjust the volume, do other basic operations, and lets you switch the surround modes. The YAS-105 has the ability to "learn" the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to turn the YAS-105 On or Off, and to adjust its volume. This allows you to use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation.

Sub Out: The YAS-105 features a mono-RCA subwoofer output so you can add an external powered subwoofer for additional bass. Sound will be output from both the soundbar speaker's built-in subwoofers and your connected external powered sub. The sub output is not filtered, so you will use the low-pass filter crossover in your powered sub.

Mounting Options Because both speakers and subwoofers are built into the Yamaha YAS-105 soundbar, it fits easily into the available space you have above or below your television. With a height of only 2.125", the YAS-105 can be easily positioned in front of your TV without blocking the TV screen or IR sensor. You can also hang the YAS-105 on the wall, using its integrated keyhole slots on the back panel. A wall-mounting template is provided. Wall mounting screws not included (sold separately).

Note: There is a installation position selector switch on the rear-panel of the soundbar speaker which needs to set to "tabletop" or "wall-mount" based on your mounting setup.

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

Customer Q&A

7 questions already asked

Q
can it be used on a computer?
don  Jan 26, 2016
2 answers
A
it will accept a line level input so if your sound card (or integral motherboard audio outputs) can accommodate that (I cannot think of one that could not), then yes. Also has an digital optical input which is far superior if your sound card can output that, use it.
stuart  Jan 26, 2016
A
That depends, does the computer's sound card support coaxial or digital optical output? Then yes. There's also a mini stereo input, like that of an iPod or iPhone if you don't have digital outputs.

Q

This is not designed for 220V operation.

Q
I am technologically challenged when it comes to sound systems. I am looking for something that will increase the voice and decrease background noise on my new flat screen. Would this do what I need it to do?
laurie  Jan 17, 2016

A
I wanted to do the same thing. This will help a little but not as much as I'd hoped. There is a button on the remote to increase the voice to special effects volume but its on - off, not adjustable.
robert  Jan 19, 2016
A
If you are using the sound bar with a tv you will definitely improve the voice clarity and increase the volume at the same time. This is because the yas 105 projects the sound further into the room which the standard tv speakers can not do. You will also notice it works great with a tuner, dvds and cds. great improvement. The only thing I don't like is the remote. It is quite small and inconvenient to use at times. Hope this helps.
ronald  Jan 19, 2016
A
I believe so. This unit is not for producing room-shaking bass. It accents the midrange and even has a "voice enhancer" setting. I'm not sure what background noise is, nor if this unit will help you with that. I can tell you that I am very happy with it. Good Luck
erik  Jan 19, 2016
A
It certainly will..the remote is equipped with a voice/dialog enhancer feature button
brian  Jan 19, 2016
Q
Can this soundbar be used by itself (no tv or receiver)?
rupert  Dec 12, 2015
3 answers
A
Yes, the YAS-105 has multiple inputs, including Bluetooth. It is a powered "speaker" (with woofers), so all it needs is input from a qualifying device to amplify sound.
william  Dec 13, 2015
A
I'm not sure, but I think so. You would use the bluetooth to connect it to a smartphone or other music player. It also has RCA inputs.
erik  Dec 13, 2015
A
Yes. It is Blue Toothcapable so wifi capable so will pick up Streaming blue tooth signals from iPhone, iPad, android devices etc. No TV or receiver necessary
john  Dec 12, 2015
Q
Can the sound bar sit on top of the tv on a shelf?
jeffrey  Nov 15, 2015
9 answers
A
It can be mounted to a wall above the TV, but will not sit directly on top of the TV. The vibration from the sub would not be good for any TV. And unless it's a 15 year old projection TV, I can't think of a style which would ever be safe sitting on top of a flat-screen.
richard  Nov 18, 2015
A
yes, I have mine on a shelf below the TV and hooked into both the TV Direct and a Toslink output from an Oppo.
stuart  Nov 17, 2015
A
No Sir. The Yamaha soundbar is not magnetically protected, thus the distant installation.
allen  Nov 15, 2015
A
I see no reason why it can't be on a shelf above the TV , but would think the closer to the TV you have it the better the sound will be.
allen  Nov 15, 2015
A
If you have a shelf above your TV, it would probably sound just fine there. Although, it should optimally sit in front of, or be mounted slightly below your TV.
mark  Nov 15, 2015
A
yes
daniel  Nov 15, 2015
A
my understanding of this sound bar is you can mount it on the wall, or place it on a shelf. I opted for wall mounting, I placed it under the TV because I've been told this is best for sound imaging. I'm no expert, and I believe speakers are mounted near the ceiling of movie theaters and they sound pretty impressive to me in that location. I say go for it if that's the best place for your installation.
james  Nov 15, 2015
A
I have my sound bar on a shelf right in front of tv. Works great
jan  Nov 15, 2015

it can rest on a flat surface above the TV but not on a TV. I have mine on a shelf above the TV on top of a DVD player.

The unit has bluetooth. It should be able to play from the Apple product. I have not done this myself because I don't need to, so my answer is a tentative one.
erik  Nov 12, 2015
A
I do not have an IPOD so i really do not no for sure. But i would say if the IPOD is bluetooth and everything else connects, i do no see why it should not. It is a really nice sound bar and sounds real good connected to my TV. Sorry i could not be more help. You may try getting in touch with Yamaha and they may be able to answer your question.
john  Nov 12, 2015
A
Yes you can use it with your iPad and Iphone
brian  Nov 12, 2015

Yes use can and it took me no more than 5 mins to do it. It is the easiest sound bar ever to setup. User friendly . Hope this answer your question??
brian  Nov 12, 2015
A
Yes you can connect your iPod, iPad, iPhone, tablet etc via Bluetooh. I'm not sure about the computer. I haven't tried connecting my computer yet.
eneyda  Nov 12, 2015
A
If the device is blue tooth capable it will work with the YAS-105
john  Nov 12, 2015
Q
Can I use this to supplement my 5.1 speakers or would there be no added sound clarity benefit?
jeffrey  Oct 01, 2015
5 answers
A
IMHO....there would be no benefit to add this to your 5.1 set-up.....this soundbar is to enhance TV sound only....two channel sound only......your 5.1 system will kick its arse.....
charles  Oct 02, 2015
A
Just downsized from a Yamaha 5.1 system due to moving into a smaller space and bought the YAS-105 to replace the system. The YAS-105, in my opinion could never replace the high end system and would most likely create an "echo" or tunneling sound. We get this occasionally just with the TV speakers if they aren't synced properly.
william  Oct 01, 2015
A
I assume you have an amplifier connected to your 5.1 surround? There is no connection provided with the YAS 105 to connect to an amplifier. I have the same situation with surround sound speakers. All I wanted to do is connect my right and left speaker when viewing regular tv. There is no provision for that either. Hope this helps.
ronald  Oct 01, 2015
A
i use this only with a subwoofer that I have connected to me this is more than enough it's a great sound bar so I can only assume that it would add to the clarity of your system.
daniel  Oct 01, 2015
A
technically, you could...I think that would depend on the quality of your 5.1 speakers and system. I, personally, would not do that. but I am very happy with my 5.1 system and the sound quality it provides.
