About the Yamaha YAS-106

Jeff Miller

Yamaha does more with less

I've seen Yamaha fill rooms with sound from a single sound bar better than some can do with a dual-speaker combo. Case in point, the YAS-106 sound bar. It's the update to last year's “too-good-to-call-entry-level” YAS-105, that I gushed over in an online review. This bar looks even slicker and more compact than its predecessor, fitting under your TV on a stand or mounted on a wall. And the sound? Still classic Yamaha. Everything sounds bigger and clearer — effects, dialogue, and music, too.

Yamaha YAS-106 sound bar with Bluetooth

The compact Yamaha YAS-106 sound bar can be wall mounted or sit on a stand below your TV.

I've seen Yamaha fill rooms with sound from a single sound bar better than some can do with a dual-speaker combo. Case in point, the YAS-106 sound bar. This bar looks even slicker and more compact than its predecessor, fitting under your TV on a stand or mounted on a wall. And the sound? Still classic Yamaha. Everything sounds bigger and clearer — effects, dialogue, and music, too.

Binge-watch with better sound

The YAS-106 includes Dolby® and DTS® decoding as well as Yamaha's digital surround processing for a more three-dimensional feel. Built-in amplifiers power six drivers for rich, full-range sound, with plenty of high-frequency detail. From subtle footstep sounds to louder effects like collisions, the slim bar's ample bass adds visceral realism to your favorite movies and shows. And if you crave even more bass impact, there's a dedicated output for an external subwoofer.

Bluetooth lets you play tunes, wirelessly

Yamaha didn't forget the music – after all, it's how the company made their name. The YAS-106 has built-in Bluetooth so you can play music wirelessly from your phone or tablet. Special processing cleans up compressed audio files, so all your tunes will sound full and detailed.

Easy hookup and operation

Both HDMI connections are 4K compatible, with full HDCP 2.2 capability. You can also use the included optical digital cable to connect your sound bar to your TV. Use your existing TV remote to control power and volume commands, use the included remote, or download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app. This turns your Apple® or Android™ device into a Bluetooth remote.

Features

2.1ch Active Soundbar Speaker: The Yamaha YAS-106 active soundbar speaker features a 2.1ch driver configuration with one 1" dome tweeter and one 2.125" mid-woofer for each of the left & right channels, as well as dual 3" subwoofers for the LFE channel. The YAS-106 delivers 120-watts of power to the enclosed drivers - 30 watts to each of the left & right channels and 60 watts to both subwoofers.

Built-In Subwoofers w/ Bass Extension: The YAS-106 is equipped with dual, built-in subwoofers plus a unique bass reflex port and "Bass Extension" processing to deliver exceptional low-end performance without the need for a separate powered subwoofer. You can adjust the level of the built-in subwoofers independently from the soundbar's overall volume.

Compressed Music Enhancer: The Compressed Music Enhancer restores frequency response lost during digital compression, so your music sounds the way it should. Optimized for Bluetooth audio transmission, you'll enjoy vivid, lively sound quality during wireless playback. When a compressed source is played, the Compressed Music Enhancer engages automatically.

Clear Voice: Clear Voice raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.

Dolby Digital & DTS Compatible: The Yamaha YAS-106 soundbar decodes 2ch PCM, multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital, & DTS audio signals. You can listen to these audio formats in Virtual Surround mode or 2ch Stereo mode. The 2ch Stereo mode is ideal for music, while the Virtual Surround mode provides a much more immersive soundfield for movies. From Yamaha's Home Theater Control App on your Apple iOS or Android device you select between different surround modes - TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
HDMI 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
Multichannel Linear PCM 6ch, 32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS
Optical 2Ch Linear PCM 2ch, 32-48Hz, 16/20/24-bit
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS

HDMI 2.0: The YAS-106 has one HDMI  2.0 input and one HDMI 2.0 output. It supports up to 4K/60p (4:2:0) video signal pass-through and HDCP 2.2 digital copy protection, as well as HDR (High Dynamic Range), Deep Color, x.v.Color, and 3D video technologies. In addition, the soundbar's HDMI connectivity supports 2ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS (up to 24-bit/32-96kHz). Also, the HDMI output supports Audio Return Channel (ARC), which simplifies connectivity with compatible TVs. The unit is compatible with the following video signals.

Note: Because with many televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray player or  Satellite/Cable box to the Yamaha soundbar directly; and then connect the YAS-106's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you with the best overall sound performance.

Analog & Digital Audio Inputs: The YAS-106 is outfitted with both analog & digital audio outputs to connect to your TV. There is one optical (toslink) digital input that supports 2Ch PCM, 5.1ch Dolby Digital, and 5.1ch DTS audio signals (up to 24-bit/32-48kHz). There is also one stereo minijack (3.5mm) audio input for televisions without an optical digital out.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of many flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Music Streaming: The Yamaha YAS-106 soundbar speaker system supports Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming (up to 33'). This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device; such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, Windows Phone/PC, or Mac computer/laptop to the YAS-106 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device.

  • Pairing: This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. If a Bluetooth device has been paired before, the unit will connect to the last paired device when the soundbar's Bluetooth source button is pressed. You will need to terminate this connection to pair a new device.
  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the Yamaha soundbar speaker offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the YAS-106 soundbar offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Bluetooth Standby: The Bluetooth Standby function allows you to turn On or Off the soundbar automatically, linked with the operation of a Bluetooth device.
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YAS-106.

Sub Out: A mono-RCA subwoofer output lets you hook up an optional powered sub (sold separately). The soundbar's built-in subs will continue to produce sound along with the external power sub. \

Remote Control: The YAS-106 comes with a sleek, easy-to-use IR remote control for wireless operation of the soundbar speaker. Also, if your TV supports HDMI CEC and you use HDMI connectivity, it is possible to adjust the volume of the sound bar using your TV's remote to simplify day-to-day operation.

Note: This soundbar does not allow you to program your TV remote to operate the speaker, but does offer HDMI control through your compatible TV's remote.

Home Theater Controller App (for iOS & Android): The YAS-106 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller), available for free download from the Apple's App Store or Google Play Store for Apple iPod touch/iPhone/iPad (iOS 8.0+) or Android smartphone/tablet (OS 2.3.3+).  This remote app makes it easy to control the soundbar from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device via a Bluetooth connection. Its intuitive and easy-to-see operating screen uses icons that let you easily perform a variety of operations; including Input, Volume, Audio settings, and Surround modes. Surround modes include TV Program, Stereo, Movie, Music, Sports, & Game.

Mounting Options: Due to its slim profile, the soundbar fits in front of most flat-panel TVs without blocking the screen. If you prefer to wall-mount the speaker, the YAS-106 offers built-in keyhole slots. The soundbar speaker will automatically adjust the sound profile based on your desired placement type.

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 20 minutes.

Q
Can you pl suggest good Sub-woofers that can be connected with YAS 106 ?

This bar has a subwoofer output so it can work with most of the powered subwoofers we list here: https://www.crutchfield.com/g_12300/Powered-Subwoofers.html?tp=187 Feel free to contact an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on a good one for your preferences. What can I connect to the HDMI input on the sound bar?

A
Your TV of course which is good it has a HDMI through which means signal of TV goes through it with both picture and sound from TV and you can keep sound bar off. Note for better quality sound add small subwoofer.
craig  Apr 20, 2017
A
You can connect a BlueRay DVD player directly to the sound bar. Personally, I can't tell any noticeable difference in sound quality doing it that way but that is the way I hooked it up anyway. I have been impressed with the sound quality for a medium sized room.

Q
New to this. Would you connect this to the TV via optical cable or HDMI?

A
Depends. This soundbar has only one HDMI input. What i did is to connect HDMI's (DVD/Cable/Etc) to my TV and send the audio via the optical audio cable from my TV.
abraham  Feb 13, 2017
A
We used optical. I think it just depends on which type of plug your TV has. My understanding is that optical gives the best quality connection. We are very please with the unit.
martha  Feb 10, 2017
A
It comes with a optical cable you can use, but you can also buy a HDMI (not included) and use it instead.
chris  Feb 10, 2017
A
I used the provided optical cable to connect to my flat screen. Works and sounds great.
alan  Feb 10, 2017
A
I used the optical cable and connected to the cable box. I read somewhere that the optical is the way to go if available (subject to correction).

Q
How important is it for the entire sound bar to be sitting on a flat surface? My TV stand is small enough that about 3 inches of the sound bar would extend off each side of the stand. Is it OK for the ports at the ends to be sticking out into the air like that, or do they rely on reflecting sound off a nearby surface? Something like 1 inch of the entire sound bar would also extend off the front edge of the TV stand.

A
I don't think it would make any difference in sound quality. I think you will be pleased with this particular sound bar.
everett  Feb 03, 2017
A
I don't see a problem with that. You could wall mount this, although at 90 degrees compared to sitting on a TV stand, so shouldn't be a problem. I love mine BTW.

Q
What is the ohm rating on this speaker(s)?
robert  Jan 05, 2017

A
Its irrelevant, it has a built in amp
philip  Jan 07, 2017
A
Robert, The specs I found says 3 and 6 ohms (without saying which speaker(s). In any case, I do not believe it will matter to you since they are driven by the internal power amplifier. There are no connections available for direct connection of the speakers to your power amplifier. Inputs to the internal amplifier are Blu-tooth, optical, HDMI and analog (1/8 inch audio). Google Yamaha YAS-106 and check the cnet link for full specs. Best regards - JohnF
john  Jan 06, 2017
A
This is a powered speaker, there are no inputs for driving the speakers directly from another amplifier, so its not really necessary to know the impedance of each speaker in this bar. Having said that, specs online show the subwoofer as being a 3ohm/6ohm driver, can't tell if its a single speaker with a dual voice coil or two separate speakers. It does not specify what the midbass drivers or tweeters are either. There are a total of 5 or 6 speakers in this soundbar.
christopher  Jan 06, 2017
A
Since this is a self-amplified system, I don't know the the ohm value of the speakers. This system receives a low-level signal from the source so speaker impedance is not relevant.

Q
I'm interested in this and wondering how to hook things up when I have two input sources: a Comcast XG1-A Cable Box/DVR and a Sony PS3. My current signal chain is: Comcast Cable Input --> Comcast XG1-A Cable Box/DVR. HDMI out going from the XG1-A to a Yamaha RXV-667 AVR. The Yamaha has HDMI switching and pass-thru so I also have the Sony PS3 going in to the AVR via HDMI. The HDMI out from the AVR goes to HDMI 2 (with ARC) on my Sony KDL48W600B TV. I can then choose to get sound from any HDMI source through just the TV (since the AVR passes HDMI thru) or make use of 5.1 surround by turning on the AVR. I want to get rid of the Yamaha AVR & speakers and replace it with the YAS-106 Soundbar. The catch is that the YAS-106 has just an HDMI input and an HDMI/ARC output. I interpret the notes for the YAS-106 to recomnend that I hook my Cable box to the YAS-106 via HDMI and the YAS-106 to my TV using the HDMI/ARC port. How then do I get audio and video from my PS3 to the YAS-106? I can hook the PS3 to the TV via another HDMI port, but will the TV pass the audio to the YAS-106? And if so, in what format?

Thanks Tom and Kathy! Good to hear solutions based on actual experience. From the notes on the Crutchfield product page, connecting my source directly to the YAS via HDMI is recommended b/c some TV's don't pass DTS 5.1 signal (which the YAS can process) on their ARC output. I'll try the optical route either from the TV or from the PS/3 if the HDMI doesn't work.
vincent  Dec 13, 2016
A
Use the optical connection for audio and pass the video through the HDMI arc return
clarence  Dec 13, 2016
A
After wading thru your detailed question, I think the simple answer for your audio from all sources is to connect an audio optical cable from your tv directly to the optical input on the sound bar. Send your hdmi signals directly to the tv inputs. In that manner, any audio source to the tv is passed directly to the sound bar. It worked for me.
thomas  Dec 13, 2016

I use the HDMI A/R I'mput to the TV, _wich means that the signal goes to the soundbar and then the TV. Turning on the TV automatically engages the soundbar.
rick  Dec 02, 2016
A
It will turn on when the TV turns on.
justin  Nov 29, 2016
A
Once I was able to successfully configure ARC with the TV, then it would turn on and off with the TV. Before ARC was configured, I needed to turn it on separately. I don't use other sources of input, so I don't know on that. For the ARC, I needed to use HDMI as opposed to the digital optical audio.

The woofer does have a up/down button on the remote. I don't like a lot of bass, so I have mine turned way down. Never had it turned up, so I don't know if it boom booms or not. I bought mine, for listing to the news and some sports. Which this does have a 'clear voice' button or can choose a surround function for like music. I noticed on the older model, the YAS-105, that there is a port on the back for BD/DVD. This port is not on the 106 version. DVD player goes through the TV, so I am assuming that I will get the sound benefit of the soundbar when playing DVD's. Is this correct?

The 106 Is ideals for the use of HDMI and HDMI ARC. If you are using the optical connection from the TV that will work fine if the DVD is connect via hdmi to the tv.
