Movie night at home! Break out the comfy blanket, turn off the phone ringer, and pop the popcorn. There's a fun evening ahead.
...except... for one annoyance. Turns out eating a handful of popcorn drowns out the dialogue. Don't blame your popcorn brand. It's those tiny speakers in your television at work again. Do you wish that, somehow, you could replace just the speakers with something beefier?
Well, in a sense, you can, because the Yamaha YAS-201 powered home theater sound bar is just waiting to find a home in your den or living room. Plus, its companion wireless subwoofer will be coming along for the ride, and it fits pretty much anywhere in the room that you have power and roughly a cubic foot of space.
Take a handful of popcorn and sit back. Thanks to 160 watts of total system power and Yamaha's Clear Voice technology, you won't need to lean forward or stop mid-chew to hear a subtle throw-away line. And with Air Surround Xtreme 7.1-channel surround synthesis, you'll be immersed in an expanded, surround-like soundfield that invites you in to the action on-screen.
The YAS-201 can be positioned conveniently in front of your TV with the included feet, or easily mounted on the wall. And if the bar blocks the TV's infrared receiving port, a thoughtfully placed IR blaster will forward signals received at the front of the sound bar directly from the back of the unit.
Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.
The Yamaha 201 does exactly what we want from a sound bar. It provides clear voice over background noise or music. Shipping was fast and the sound bar was in perfect condition It was easy to set up. i cannot, however, make my Dish remote operate any feature of the sound bar other than volume, which, while it works well, displays an annoying "Feature Not Available" on the TV screen. Also not sure the repeater works all the time and there is no indicator that I have seen like there is for other features. The price was great and the service from the sales department extremely good.
Pros: Price Appearance Ease of Setuo
Cons: Incompatible with Dish remote Some features hard to verify with no visual indicator Extra cost wifi
I found this to be a good unit but not a substitute for a good surround sound system. It does what I expected it to do and is significantly better than the sound that comes from the 60" TV that it was bought for.
Pros: Reasonable sound and easy to set up. It's certainly significantly better than what comes out of the TV.
Cons: My signal is coming from a cable DVR. Some stations do not audio sync correctly with the video. There is an adjustment on the unit and most AV syncing is good so it must be something different with these few stations (CNN being one of them).
Recommended by my Crutchfield advisor I am very happy with the performance of this sound bar. It is unobtrusive and the wireless sub-woofer is perfect for the small TV room we have.
Finally, after years of owning a flat panel TV and being unable to hear dialog in the movies clearly, I woke up and bought this sound bar. What a difference it makes when you can actually hear the words ! The sub wolfer on this unit also gives you a movie theater style bass that adds quality and drama to movies. This unit provides high performance without going overboard into overspending.
Pros: Overall sound is very good. The sound bar fills the room with clear sound. The voices are clear, and the sound does not break up, even at high volumes.
Cons: The sound bar does block the sensor at the front of the T.V. so I have to stand up in front of the TV to change channels by creating a direct line of sight to the sensor. So far I have been unable to get the repeater to function, but this may be my fault in not setting it up correctly.
Such a large subwoofer, and so little comes from it. You are also stuck with two remotes because inhere is no way to learn the "mute" command. My Boston Acoustics sound bar and subwoofer was cheaper and sounds much better.
Pros: Looks nice.
Cons: Feeble bass, no mute.
Good sound improvement for small to medium sized rooms. Dont expect booming sound but much improved clarity and volume with just enough bass punch without being over bearing.
Pros: Super easy to install.
Cons: Some might want more bass.
I bought this for my father, who was irritated at the poor sound quality from his new flat-screen, particularly the spoken dialog. Like every single LCD-TV i've seen, his had tiny speakers that sounded awful. The Yamaha YAS-201 did exactly what I hoped it would; provide better sound quality and modest amplification in a discrete package. The difference in quality is night and day, particularly the mid-range frequencies of human speech.
Programing my TV remote was fairly simple following the included instructions. Wireless subwoofer fills in the deeper end nicely at moderate volumes. This isn't a unit that will shake the floors and rattle the windows, but it will make your flatscreen tv sound a lot better at any normal listening volume.
Pros: Improves sound quality (particularly spoken dialog) Fairly easy to program the volume to my existing remote IR repeater allows remote to work even when sound bar partially blocked the bottom inch of the TV (see cons, below)
Cons: took a few extra minutes to get the optical cable to sync with the television, although this was more due to the tv than the unit. Still - it took me a few extra steps for me. the sound bar just barely blocked the bottom of the TV. My dad "solved" the problem by elevating the TV another inch by putting a board under the TV stand - a very utilitarian solution, but not the most decorative.
I own Bose speakers systems (the L-1) etc. for stage live performance (pianist) and I really like them. I was going to buy a Bose for my new Samsung 60" smart TV, but bought the Yamaha sound bar with the wireless subwoofer after speaking to a Crutchfield rep and am I glad I did. Totally awesome for the price and less expensive than the Bose that sits under the TV. The remote is remarkably easy to use and being able to put the wireless subwoofer towards the back of the room spreads the sound out wonderfully. The subwoofer turns on and off with the sound bar, so no forgetting to turn it on or off. We are using this in a 20'x20' bedroom and it's the first time my husband has ever said he can actually hear the vocal without the proverbial "What'd he say?". Unless you're in some huge room with high ceilings or some screwy audiophile, I personally don't think you'd need more than this and you can't beat the price from Crutchfield....I tried. The unit is wall mountable if you lack space to sit it (subwoofer sits on the floor...period). I love this thing. Totally impressed.
Pros: Compact. Sounds great. Easy to use. Great price. Super quick ship from Crutchfield. What more can you ask?
Cons: No cons from this professional musician.
The sound is great and the look is good, the only compliant that I have is that most of the time that I use it I have to power cycle the subwoofer because the bar don't recognized it. I purchased the item because of the good name but I am some how kind of disappointed of the product.
Cons:Crutchfield response on December 27, 2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Great sounds that fills the room and makes the voices clear. Easy set up for equipment and user remote. Subwoofer provides accurate and deep bass without being to over powering and distractive.
Pros: Looks good, sounds even better
This sound bar is great for TV viewing and pretty good for music - it fills the room up well and the sub kicks just right without being overbearing.
I have a Panasonic Viera smart TV, Apple TV and the Yamaha YAS 201 as my living room set up.
Pros: Wireless sub and good sound for the price.
Cons: Yamaha would benefit from have the YAS-201 come in a few colors. I'd recommend having the black, white, silver/grey, and then a color - perhaps orange or product RED version.
awesome sound bar!!!!
Pros: great sound!!
I have a room with tall ceilings (20 feet) and wanted a soundbar that might enhance the sound of my 55 inch TV mounted above a fireplace. With only fireplace mantle space for placement of sound enhancing devices and not wanting wires running everywhere, I wanted a moderately priced, compact soundbar and a wireless subwoofer. After reading on-line reviews but particularly following the recommendation of a Crutchfield tech, I purchased the above product. I could not be happier. The soundbar arrived in a timely manner, installation was simple and the sound enhancement is much more than I expected. The Yahmah YAS 201 makes a noticeable difference in this large room, particularly so when watching a movie or listening to music.
Pros: Sound enhancement, compact size, wireless subwoofer
I've long suffered listening to cable TV, Netflix and Blu-Ray DVDs out of my Panasonic TV speakers (which is the equivalent of listening to your iPhone/iPod sans earbuds). Unfortunately I'm not in a position yet where I can have a full blown 7.1 surround sound system, so I had to put off better audio quality for another day. Well, it's been a few years now, and that day still hasn't come. I recently watched a couple of Blu-Rays where I had to almost max out the volume just to hear the dialog. Plus, during the Summer, our central air running would drown it out anyway. I read about sound bars last year, but it seemed like most people just made fun of them. Of course, they were probably people who had rooms dedicated to their home theater and didn't live in a 1-bedroom rental like I do. Yesterday, I happened upon a user review raving about the Yamaha YAS-101 which caused me to look it up on another retailer's reviews. It seemed to be a home run for people in my position. I also was curious about the YAS-201 with the added subwoofer since some complained that the YAS-101 lack a little in the bass department. So I decided to go to a local TV/Appliance place so I could actually hear it myself. I ended up buying their YAS-201 floor model for a discount. VERY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE! Yeah it's not the perfect audio set-up, but it's LIGHT YEARS better than the subpar TV speakers. I can hear dialog as well as bass during music and action sequences.
Pros: Improved the sound quality of my TV which therefore improved my experience watching TV/Blu-Ray/Netflix.
I have always had my television and components(Blue Ray,DVD, Satellite receiver, etc) run through my stereo system in 5 channel Dolby surround. I was afraid that I was going to end up sending this back because I really did'nt expect to be satisfied with the sound quality. I was wrong. It's also much simpler for my family to use.
Pros: I'm down to one remote for TV, Sound and satellite receiver! My wife can operate everything!!! Amazing!!!
Before the Yamaha sound bar: "What did they say. Can you play that over"? After the sound bar: Pure enjoyment. The sound quality is excellent and adds so much to all movies and music.
Pros: Easy to install. Distinct dialog. Has a surround sound feature.
Cons: If only it was permanently part of a TV so can use only one remote.
Big sound. Small package. Mounted on was under tv. Looks and sounds amazing. Plugged into back of Verizon box and turns on with remote every time.
Pros: Easy set up. Synced to Verizon remote
I went with with the system based on prior very positive experience with Yamaha audio products, the features, and the price. My current home arrangement precluded me from putting up my big Yamaha 5.1 system, so a sound bar was the ticket to add to my 55" Samsung LED.
It does give way better audio than the internal speakers of the TV, and the set up was very simple. When putting out the TV's audio, I see what others have said about it not getting very loud; however, when playing movies through my HTPC, I can make it plenty loud by ramping up the sound coming out of the computer. The wireless sub is very cool and adds just the right amount of base.
My four star rating has to do with overall sound. To me, it lacks mid range tone, but, at the same time, I recognize what it is and what I paid for it. Overall, it is a solid choice.
Pros: Easy set up, optical inputs, my TV remote turns it on and off.
Cons: Mid-range tone is light for my tastes.
This sound bar works well for the price and produces quality sound along with the Clear Voice feature. Only hold back from a 5 star rating is the volume capability. I expected the max volume to be a bit louder, that said it is loud enough for general use, it judges won't knock you off your chair.
Pros: Clear Voice, easy set up, wireless sub
Cons: Max volume capability
Easy setup, great sound.
Pros: Great sound, remote pass thru
Absolutely love this product. The TV Remote Repeater function is an absolute necessity for our setup, and it works great. The installation was extremely easy including the remote learning function (it was all done in a few minutes). I am very pleased with the quality of the sound-- it works great in our sunroom.
Pros: Ease of setup, TV Remote Repeater function, and sound quality
Cons: None, so far!
Easy to set up and use. Bought the Iphone device to allow playlists to be sent to the sound bar. Works great
Wanted a soundbar with a wireles sub and after speaking to a representative settled on the YAS-201. Ordering was easy and the product shipped the next day. I have a Sony Brava 40" HD TV that I was connecting too and this unit would not play using the optical out from the TV. Called support which was extreemly helpful, even going into actual Sony documentation to attempt to resolve. However if you have the older Sony HD tv's, you will experience the same problem. The remedy is to connect directly from the soundbar to both your cable or sat box, and Blue Ray/DVD player with optical (Required that I buy an additional optical cable). Once these connections were made everything worked perfectly. The Sub is satisfactory if not a little week. I placed it behind the sofa and turn it up about 75%. THis seems to work well in my environment. I am very pleased with the sound and clear voice functions comming from the soundbar and the bass is now acceptable. For the money I believe it is a very good value.
Pros: Product specialist, Product support (exccellent), Very easy set up, Good clear sound, Wireless bass is simply plug and play, TV repeter
Cons: Unable to use TV for Optical output thus requiring a separate Optical cable to complete setup. Sub is a little week, ATT Uverse reciever can only be programmed for on/off functions. Need to use the Yamaha remote to control volume and other adjustments
I have a 55 inch LG LED TV in the bedroom and never cared much for the sound coming out of the speakers. I purchased the Bose Solo when it first came out but was not impressed with it's sound either! Sent it back to Bose and purchased Yamaha YAS-201 and what a difference it made over the Bose! When I first hooked up the wireless sub woofer I couldn't hear much base coming out of it since it was located in the front of the room next to the TV. Once I moved the sub to the back of the room it sounded a lot better!
Pros: Easy set up except for my remote (see below), sounds great
Cons: Would have gave it 5 stars if I could program my Directv remote to shut it off. My Directv remote will turn on the TV and the Yamaha and control the volume but I always have to use the Yamaha remote to turn of the speakers. I called Crutchfield for assistance, no help there, so I'll call Yamaha when I get a chance to see if they can figure it out.
Easy set up, clear voice works well, but not as much bass as I would like.
Pros: Easy setup. Clear voice
Cons: Not enough bass
First of all, it arrived in a very few days, was packed safe and sound. It took literally < 15 minutes to hookup. This was a major improvement to my TV sound. The sound is crystal clear and more than enough detail for me to enjoy movies. Even if bullets are not whizzing around behind me from speakers, I can hear so much more (immersive you might say) with this unit. I have a real good TV Picture (Samsung 55" ES7100) but when I switch from that TV sound to this sound bar, it is like night and day. When my source contains surround sound data, I definitely hear enhanced spatial (is that the right word?) enhancement. While the surround sound will not knock your socks off (if you are used to rear speakers) I think, it is more than I expected from the soundbar and its wireless sub-woofer.
Pros: sounds great, no wires to run, sub-woofer goes anywhere in room, and I cant say enough about how CLEAR Voices are from any source input, even dumb sitcoms over cable. The subwoofer never needs to be touched as it instantly turns on or off when the SB is turned on or off. The remote is made solid and has separate volume toggles for the soundbar and sub-woofer if you are so inclined to tweak. Tho HDMI Inputs although I only use 1 (from TV with mult inputs to the SB)
Cons: None that I can see (unless you compare surround sound of SB's to full 7:1 speaker setup - which I don't have the room for)
Bought this on 1 reviewers statement he owned a polk system and this sounded better and had power.Circuitry on the polk 6000 quit and this was in my price range. He was right, it has the power and a more natural unboxy like flow and the clear voice, tv repeater and the non credit card remote are all big plus.points.Reciver is a hard plastic with cloth grilles, but it actually has a classic look and even though it goes above the tv sensor ,tv reater works. Nice not to standup and angle the remote over the bar.Sound is clean and clear voice is great.Bass is good, but had to play with the sub to get it to really produce bass and it seemed to work better near the soundbar.I am giving the soundbar a 4 rating because of the sub.Suprised at $400-$600 price alot of the sound bars do not have hdmi and my wish list would be to put a lighted display for volume and sub adjusts. Now, it is by ear only.Iwould buy this unit again and highly recommend for the great features. Recommend this bar for sound ,ease of use and great features.. The sub will not rock the house. Enjoyed listening to CWs tv show Supernatural and the movie CONGO as effects are there and the music has an easy flow.Yamaha really made a good bar at this price range and if they added a bit more sub, hdmi and lighted displayI'D pay $699 .The avg listener or those in a complex where window shaking bass is not needed will love this bar.
Pros: power, clear voice , tv reapter. univolume, large remote and natural sound.overall, really good soundbar and easy to use and setup.
Cons: SUB could use more output in a room and no hdmi Not a deal breaker for the avg listener as really good bar.
Easy to setup and that is all the good I can say about this item. We have been using this item for three weeks and the sound is terrible and the voices are almost unintelligible. then just two days ago, the sound board stopped working altogether. The wolfer did continue to work. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend it anybody.
Pros: Easy to set up
Cons: Didn't work as advertised.
For the money it is a great sound bar. This sound bar does not have the clarity of the more expensive sound bars but for the money it sounds and works great. Very easy to install. I
Pros: Great value for the money
Cons: Missing some clarity. Sound is great but not outstanding.
Great product... easy set up awesome sound solution rather than setting up a huge 5.1 or 7.1 home theater. love that you can easily program your remote for your tv to control the units volume. signal repeater is a sweet feature that works.
Pros: great sound easy set up. comes with an optical cable in the box
Cons: came with an optical cable which i didn't know so i had already bought two to use... not really a con but wish I knew before hand
I don't usually review items but this is an amazing sound bar! I have a Polk sound bar and also a Samsung soundbar that both sounded awful. I also ordered the Yamaha Yas-101 soundbar earlier this year and returned it because it just sounded weak to me. The Yas-201 took about 10 minutes to set up and going including easy pairing with my Directv remote. With Clear Voice I can clearly hear dialogue over the music, explosions, etc. in dramas and movies. The sound leveler keeps commercials the same volume as whatever you are watching. My room is 18'x20' with a high ceiling and this unit with the included subwoofer really sounds good. Music also sounds good.
Could not be happier both with the Yamaha sound bar and with the excellent service from Crutchfield Thank You
I bought the YAS-201 a little over a week ago. Set up was a breeze and the sound quality is fantastic. All features work exactly as expected. I love the univolume and clear voice features. The former keeps the sound volume unchanged during the commercials, thereby making them less annoying. The virtual surround definitely makes a big difference. But, you should maintain a realistic expectation from this soundbar. Afterall, it's called virtual for a reason: it won't create what you'd expect from a 7.1 system. if that's what you want, then you should invest in one. But, what it does indeed makes a tangible difference in sound quality for the price point. The wireless subwoofer works seamlessly, with excellent clarity and allows flexible placement within the specified range (~20', mine is about 15' feet away from the soundbar). I found this to be an excellent investment, worth every penny. Kudos to Yamaha for yet another excellent product.
Pros: Excellent value with features that work exactly as advertised.
Cons: The surround is virtual, again, as advertised. Can't expect what you'd hear out of a true 7.1 system.

YAS Front Surrond System: The Yamaha YAS-201 is a two-component home theater system composed of an amplified soundbar speaker and wireless powered subwoofer that produces a 160-watts of total power. The soundbar speaker with AirSurround Xtreme technology and the wireless powered subwoofer delivers 7.1-channel surround sound from a simple to setup two-component speaker system. The Yamaha YAS-201 is a great addition to your flat-panel TV, replacing your television's speaker with rich, virtual surround sound. The soundbar's front-panel and top have a glossy "piano black" finish that harmonizes beautifully with today's flat-panel TVs, while the wireless powered subwoofer can be hidden out of sight for a stylishly compact home theater system.
Amplified Soundbar Speaker (YAS-CU201): The soundbar speaker houses a 60-watt digital amp and two 2.125" cone speakers with large magnets to ensure high sound clarity. Its superb structural design allows high capacity cabinet volume for very powerful and clear sound, even though the body is very slim. The grilles protecting the speaker unit is a saran net that allows unimpeded sound flow. All sounds, including vocals and music, are clear and pleasant. The soundbar speaker fits easily into the available space you have above or below your television. With a height of only 3.875" (with feet), the soundbar speaker can be easily positioned in front of your TV so the soundbar straddles the TV stand, using the included feet. You can remove the feet and hang the soundbar speaker on the wall, using the included wall-mount brackets. A wall-mounting template is provided. Wall mounting screws not included (sold separately). The soundbar speaker measures 3.0" in height without feet.
Wireless Powered Subwoofer (NS-WSW40): The YAS-201 includes a wireless powered subwoofer that houses a front-firing 6.5" woofer inside a bass-reflex cabinet (side-firing port) powered by a built-in 100-watt amplifier. This 6.5" subwoofer features a large magnet and a front-firing configuration. Its high sound quality design takes advantage of Yamaha's proprietary Advanced YST II and a Linear Port to produce deep and smooth bass. Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance. The circuit board has an ideal grounding pattern that ensures stable current supply for prodigious bass output. This subwoofer is capable of delivering powerful movie effect sounds and rich, deep bass. You can adjust the soundbar speaker's subwoofer volume independent from the speaker's main volume for added bass response. The wireless subwoofer does not have to be connected to the sound bar, so setup and placement is faster and easier. This is a convenient subwoofer that delivers powerful, high-quality bass sound.
Air Surround Xtreme Technology: The slim, low-profile soundbar speaker system features the latest Air Surround Xtreme technologies. Yamaha's exclusive Air Surround Xtreme reproduces 7.1-channel surround sound with high quality, excellent imaging, and rich presence; far superior to that of the speakers in your TV. You'll experience an extremely realistic and impressive sound field, with clear dialogue in the front and dynamic sound action at the back and sides. This system can also be set to Stereo.
Dolby Digital/DTS Compatible: The YAS-201 home theater system is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound.
Clear Voice: The Clear Voice function raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies, TV shows, sports commentary, and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.
UniVolume: UniVolume is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials, and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray movie, or to listen to music on CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building. This feature can be switched On or Off.
Audio Delay Control (Lip Sync): This technology adjusts the timing of the picture and dialog, so they are always in sync with one another.
Dual Digital Optical Inputs: The Yamaha YAS-201 soundbar is fitted with 2 rear-panel digital audio optical (toslink) inputs labeled "TV" and "BD/DVD". The soundbar's digital inputs support PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS audio signals.
Remote Control: The YAS-201's IR remote control is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power On or Off, adjust the volume, do other basic operations, and lets you switch the surround modes. The YAS-201 has the ability to "learn" the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to turn the YAS-201 On or Off, and to adjust its volume. This allows you to use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation. Even if the soundbar speaker blocks the TV's remote control signal, the IR flasher on the back of the soundbar transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.
Auto-Sleep Function: The system will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 12 hours, or no audio input and no operation for 1 hour.
Optional Wireless Transmitter (for Apple devices): The optional YIT-W12 Wireless Transmitter lets you enjoy music wirelessly from your iPod/iPhone/iPad or Mac/PC. The yAired technology developed by Yamaha provides uncompressed linear PCM transmission for clear, accurate sound output. yAired technology uses lossless (uncompressed) signal transmission to achieve wireless sound quality that is as good as wired quality and the perfect synchronization between sounds and images for movies.
