If you're intrigued by the possibilities of surround sound for your TV but aren't ready for a multi-speaker system, then check out Yamaha's YSP-1400. It's a powerful sound bar that delivers true 5.1-channel sound. Its unique array of eight beam drivers bounces sound off of the walls in your room to create impressive surround effects. You won't even need a separate subwoofer for deep bass. Two built-in subwoofers in this bar ensure you'll get plenty of low-frequency rumble to add depth to movies and TV shows.
The YSP-1400 uses eight beam drivers to bounce sound off of walls for realistic surround sound.
Yamaha goes the extra mile to ensure the YSP-1400's surround effects will have you looking over your shoulder for speakers that aren't there. Settings for the beam drivers can be tweaked so they are optimized for your room. Use the included remote to select from three positions in which your bar is set up. To really dial in the sound, download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app to your Apple® or Android™ smartphone. Then use the app to input your precise room dimensions. The app uses Bluetooth to communicate with the bar, adjusting the beam drivers for accurate, immersive sound.
You can also use this bar's Bluetooth capability for wireless music streaming. Listen to MP3s stored on your portable device or streaming music from services like Pandora® Internet radio and Spotify. Or open up the free controller app and use your smartphone to choose from the YSP-1400's five different Cinema DSP surround modes for movies, TV, music, sports, and video games.
One cable is likely all you'll need to connect the YSP-1400 to your TV to bypass its built-in speakers for room-filling sound. Most newer TVs have an optical digital output. The included optical cable should be all you need to start enjoying movies and TV shows in all their sonic glory. The included remote can learn your TV's power and volume commands. And a built-in IR repeater on the bar means that your TV remote will still work, even if the bar blocks the TV's infrared receiver.
Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.
Easy to connect and program, Great sound
One bar so no need to find a space for the sub. Sound quality is great for dialogue / normal TV / games. If you are looking for sound for movies I probably look for the ones with the wireless sub.
Pros: easy to use and set up Great for dialogue
Cons: not the deepest base out there.
I use this in my bedroom with a Philips 42, and it works great even with only analog out on the TV. Voice is very clear and was easy to use. The IR repeater was a must and works great. I haven't used the bluetooth
Pros: ease of use IR repeater clear voice excellent
Pretty good for a sound bar. Replaced a Panasonic Entertainment System in a Box that muffled dialogue. Much better in a large viewing room with high ceilings.
Pros: Ease of set up.
Cons: No HDMI.
Pros: Very easy to use
Cons: Bluetooth doesn't automatically connect. Will have to connect thru phone settings.
This was a gift to my brother in laws for his 60th and to my sister So like many they had one gigantic LCD display 65" or 70" I think but every time we would visit I couldn't help notice the sound coming out of it was very narrow and lackluster at best no lows and no mids that I could distinguish just some tin can highs, So then boom we hooked it up and who was one of the first to notice the difference in sound in the room it was the cat and shortly after pretty much everyone else. So a few weeks have gone by at their house of watching football and they watch a lot of football some movies and some shows and the number one comment is .. we are hearing things we've never heard before like the crowds the refs voice birds etc... and music channels are worth it along with BT streaming. As they say ... "if ya don't know then ya don't know" ..what you have been missing.
Pros: 15 min basic setup time.. This does a great job for what it is defining sounds Lows / Mids / Highs ... no it's not made to shake the house add a woofer if you need that. READ the manual ..use the app or even better call Crutchfield if do don't have a clue... Long time Crutchfield customer they do what they say.
Cons: The only con is the box was damaged by the shipper ...called Crutchfield about it and that put a note on file incase something was wrong.
Small New York City apartments and sound surround home theater systems with subwoofers don't really mix. Needed a compact sound system that covers movies, music, sports, tv programming - without a gazillion pieces and wires. This system is awesome for managing the variations in sound between tv programs and commericials, and for the sound and voice tracks in movies - no more racing for the remote to turn the sound up and down, no more saying "what did he say?" once the action track stops and the dialogue begins. Making bluetooth connections to the playlists on my phone are a snap. Would never have found this unit if not for the great technical support staff at Crutchfield - they totally know their products and are able to recommend the right system for the right application. And, if that weren't enough, you should stop by and hear the crackle and pop of the logs on my fireplace blueray disc!
Pros: Easy setup and operation. Self-contained. Does it all. Great value.
Cons: Wish it had an optional olfactory unit that could disperse the scent of wood burning, freshly-mowed grass, salt air by the seaside, to coordinate with the on screen programming! In the meantime, I've got my scratch-n-sniff collection. :o)
Purchased for 40" Samsung. It complements the TV's speakers well and is the easiest system that I've ever connected..."optical-in", plug into wall... there you go. For small to medium size rooms, its more than sufficient, not awe inspiring. The draw to this sound bar was the simplicity of design and that also is a weakness. There really is no substitute for an external sub-woofer and connectivity on the back is "Limited", to say the least. One more issue, no LCD display in front is a bit annoying, you have to learn the sequence of light to let you know what mode/settings are active. To be honest I am curious about the YSP-2500. Final thought, I have had more complicated systems in the past, but would use it on rare occasion. Now I find myself with the sound-bar on all the time. And the Bluetooth does work with an IPhone 6.
Pros: Easy to setup, relatively inexpensive, and above average sound.
Cons: Built-in subwoofers are mediocre at best, No LCD display to show relevant information, limited connectivity.
I purchased this unit yo use with my Toshiba 50 inch TV in my small (800 sq ft) cottage. I wanted a sound bar for its convenience and small footprint to replace the sound system that is included with the TV (which is terrible). My TV is connected to an outside Antenna (yes, cut the cable) and the cottage doesn't have internet connectivity. I found that this unit works great with my set-up providing clear sound (especially dialogue) and provides a pleasant experience for watching movies. While I haven't done so yet, I may hook-up a subwoofer to give it that extra punch. Don't expect theater-grade surround sound but if you want something to punch-up your standard anemic TV speakers common with the flat panel speakers, this is a good purchase. I have a Bose Solo hooked to my home TV and did a side-by-side comparison. I like the Yamaha. I find the free phone app easy to use and like the advantage of listening to podcasts thru the speakers via bluetooth. I found it all very easy to set-up. I will say that music played from my phone via bluetooth sounded a little tinny. Hope you found this helpful.
Pros: Ease of set-up, bluetooth connectivity, dialogue clarity, ease of use, value for the price
Cons: Music via bluetooth sounded tinny
I was looking for a bar only, without the big box of the Sub... and I was surprised that the sub of the bar does a great job abd I really don't need that big box in my room.... the surround is great and it really mad the difference.
This was purchased based on reviews read here and elsewhere, I have to say, this is the first time multiple reviews seem to have it wrong. Easy to setup, but the sound is pretty awful, it's tiring to listen to at volume, music clarity is horrible. and the whole surround illusion thing is a joke, I actually laughed when I tried it out. Very, very upset as it was not that cheap, but a $50 stereo receiver sounds far better. Won't send it back, because it's my screw up, and there really is nothing wrong with it, it's just not what I was thinking it would be for sure. And I see the price just dropped $50 which makes it still not worth it.
Pros: easy on the eye, easy to setup
Cons: terrible sound quality, look elsewhere for music reproduction, even at moderate volume
The YSP-1400 arrived the day before Thanksgiving and will be returned the next week because of two issues. First, the sound bar doesn't work with any of my Sharp TV's HDMI port connections (e.g. Directv, Blue-ray player). It does work with non-HDMI connections (OTA, game console) I understand this is an issue with my Sharp Aquos TV and I could dumb down my connections, but the bottom line is it doesn't work without a lot of hassles and degradation of video. The second issue is the Bluetooth connectivity didn't work with a iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s; it did work with an Android device. I was really looking forward to using the Yamaha YSP-1400 with Directv and my iPhone 6, but neither works.
Pros: Good price (on sale) Crutchfield service
Cons: Doesn't work with my Sharp TV Doesn't work with my iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S
I replaced my Yamaha YSP 4000 with this unit. I did so as it was better suited for the BDI stand I bought. Very light weight unit as opposed to my original YSP. I hooked it up with the supplied optical cable to my TV and it sounds very good. I have hooked it up to by BA subwoofer, but it a pain to have to hold down a button with the unit off to engage it. Some other features also require that you use another button instead of the on button. I would also have liked another optical input for the bluray player instead of a digital coaxial one. My Samsung player does not have this output. All in all I think this is a good buy at the price and the sound is acceptable for our space and viewing habits.
Pros: Light weight and fairly easy to set up.
Cons: Some features are more complicated to use than they should be.
good sound bar for the money. Money well spent. Got the subwoofer that attaches to it and made sounds more amazing. recommend this unit for anyone needing good sound and a little space to work with
Pros: nice design
Cons: for better lower tones, need to buy the subwoofer that attaches to it. It is NOT wireless.
I had echos caused by subwoofer. Could not adjust using instructions provided. I am used to Def Tech system so will buy their soundbar.
For a single component sound bar this sounds amazing, especially compared to the speakers in my Panasonic Plasma. I can't really notice the "surround sound" effect, but could be due to my living rooms odd layout - Really great sound though without all the clutter of separate speakers. Controls my existing Sony powered sub perfectly.
Pros: Easy set up (just power and an optic cable), easily learned my remote frequencies. Sounds great and looks good.
Cons: Just wish it had sensed when the tv turns on/off and controlled its own power, and maybe include an HDMI input
The bass is not as sharp as a component audio system, but delivers enough to make an impact. The preset speaker modes are nice and easy to use. Thought the LED indicators would be insufficient but they actually are more than enough. The remote is simple and clean. The lack for a need of a separate sub makes this the most enticing soundbar from my perspective. There's also a mounting guide for drilling holes if you need to mount it on the wall. Overall a good experience and purchase
Pros: all in one, clean, simple, bluetooth works well with iphone 5 and samsung galaxy s3
Cons: no hdmi input
I'm a picky individual when it comes to televisions, sound, etc. I wasn't sure about this particular sound bar at first. I didn't think it could deliver enough punch. I was pleasantly surprised! The sound is great, and the subs offer just enough. I love the fact that I don't have a separate sub cluttering up my loving room. The Yamaha is sleek, and looks nice in place. If you get a sound bar, blue tooth shouldn't be an option. You have to have blue tooth! This is what made me pick this product at this price point over all the others. We played Christmas music, watched movies, and watched the basketball games all through blue tooth! This thing is worth every penny. My only issue is I wish it used HDMI instead of fiber optic. But that's a small issue. I just ran an optical cable trough the wall. Problem solved.
Pros: Sound quality, built in sub, sleek, sound again!
Cons: Optical cable, just my personal preference.
Great sound to go with our new 60" Sharp LED TV!
Unlike many others, I've always felt the sound from my speakers was ok. Not great but livable for a tv. That is until I hooked up this Yamaha baby. I did have a cheap Vizio sound bar hooked up that I got from another retailer years ago & it was ok for pumping up the volume a little more but the sound on that was a little muffled. The Yamaha YSP-1400 had clear, crisp sound and the surround sound was ok too, again not great but it was surprisingly good considering the speakers are sitting over the tv and sounds did seem like they were on the side walls of my room. Haven't noticed any rear surround yet but I have a large room & didn't expect it to. The Bluetooth setup was quick & easy on my IPad and their app works great. Even music on my IPad streamed without a hitch and sounded pretty nice. The bass from this unit isn't quite as room shaking as Yamaha would have you believe but it does sound pretty nice and did have some nice punch to it as well as enhancing the sound of some of my favorite tv shows. I wish it had an HDMI input, which is kind of odd in this era but the optical digital input is fine. Don't know what more I can add other than even my wife was surprised by the quality of the sound and actually liked it (which surprised me!). What I liked about this unit as opposed to a separate subwoofer is that it gives some bass sound and even a little feel without being too boomy like a separate sub would probably give. Plus that's 1 less thing taking up space.
Pros: 5.1 surround, Bluetooth for streaming & remote control app, included remote is well laid out, free Apple or Android app, sounds great
Cons: No HDMI input, bass won't shake the walls (does that count as a con for a soundbar?

Digital Sound Projector Technology: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker creates virtual surround sound by producing beams of sound that reflect off the walls in controlled directions, delivering an amazingly immersive experience. The Yamaha YSP-1400 applies a sophisticated Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is a multichannel (up to 5.1ch) surround sound that sounds like a multi-speaker system, but without the need for extra speakers. The position of the beams can be adjusted for your listening location by using the included remote control or a free downloadable app on your smartphone.
Multi-Speaker Array w/ Dual Subwoofers: The YSP-1400 is equipped with eight 1.125" array speakers on the front and two 3.25" down-firing subwoofers integrated into the feet of the soundbar speaker. These drivers are powered by a built-in amplifier which provides 2 watts of power to each array speaker and 30 watts to each subwoofer. Combined, they deliver sound with exceptional power and presence. With 3.25" subwoofer drivers built into the feet of the sound bar combined with high-rigidity bass reflex ports and a large-volume cabinet, the YSP-1400 delivers clear, rich and deep bass for movie sound effects and music. The independent right and left channel configuration provides superior sound imaging.
Dolby Digital/DTS Compatible with Cinema DSP: The YSP-1400 is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound. Yamaha's ultra-sophisticated Cinema DSP technology enhances Dolby Digital/DTS and two-channel soundtracks to create a thrillingly realistic soundscape in your living room. When the source is two-channel, the sound is played back with Dolby Pro Logic II technology. You can select from five different Cinema DSP program modes; including Movie, Music, Sports, Game, or TV Program.
Analog + Digital Inputs: The Yamaha YSP-1400 is fitted with both analog and digital inputs to connect your flat-panel television and other AV components. The soundbar speaker features two analog inputs (3.5mm/RCA) and two digital inputs (optical/coaxial). The soundbar's digital inputs support PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS audio signals. You should turn your TV's speakers off or set the TV's volume to 0.
Audio Enhancements: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker provides a variety of audio adjustments to enhance your movie and music listening experience.
Subwoofer Output: The Subwoofer Out mono-RCA jack on the rear-panel of the Yamaha soundbar speaker lets you connect an additional subwoofer to enjoy even more powerful bass sound. You cannot use the speaker's built-in subwoofer and the external subwoofer connection simultaneously.
Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker supports Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming. This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device (such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, or computer/laptop) to the YSP-1400 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device. This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Up to 8 devices can be paired, but only one can be used at a time. Once paired, the YSP-1400 will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
Remote Control w/ IR Repeater: The YSP-1400's IR remote control is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power On or Off, adjust the volume, do other basic operations, and lets you switch the surround modes. The YSP-1400 also has the ability to "learn" the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to turn the YSP-1400 On or Off, and to adjust its volume. This allows you to use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation. Even if the YSP-1400 blocks the TV's remote control signal, the IR repeater on the back of the soundbar transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.
Remote App (for Apple iOS/Android): The YSP-1400 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller), available for free download for Apple iOS (5.1+) and Android (2.3.3+) devices. Download this app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store. This remote app makes it easy to control the sound bar via a Bluetooth connection; including input selections, surround modes, and detailed audios settings; including sound beams.
Mounting Options: With a rich, glossy-black finish and a slim design, the YSP-1400 complements the look of your flat-screen TV and fits neatly in front of it. When placed on a stand, the soundbar's feet allow it to straddle the base of your flat-panel TV. The soundbar speaker can also be mounted to a wall using the two rear-panel keyhole slots, the included mounting template, and mounting hardware (sold separately). For optimum surround sound effect, select a preset position mode (Left, Center, or Right) according to where the soundbar speaker is installed in your room.
Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 30 minutes.

I connected mine to an Infinity subwoofer and it works great. I use the Polk equipment in another room. [ JOHN Apr 16, 2015 ]
I don't know, I do not own a sub psw10. I don't know what that is. [ CYNTHIA G Apr 16, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That Yamaha has a pretty dynamic range to not have an included subwoofer. The frequency response is 45-22k. If I were adding a subwoofer, I would have it crossed over at 50-60. I hope this information helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Mar 27, 2015 ] Staff
I was sceptical about the optical as well. I don't seem to have lost out on any sound coming from the TV to optical only connection. You will actually set up the Yamaha App on your IPhone or Android device and set up the sound bar for distance and proximity to the television as well as Bass(sub), DVD, Music, Movies, etc. This sound bar is awsome. Second to no surround system I've ever owned. You won't lose any sound. [ LARRY Jan 10, 2015 ]
Our roku is integrated in our tv, but we have the sound bar and tv connected by an optical connection and have not experienced any loss of audio. You do have the option of using RCA stereo connectors as well. We connected our bar along with an external subwoofer, which caused us to lose the auto sound level option ..... not relevant to your question but just thought I would throw it in. [ PAULE A Jan 09, 2015 ]
I have Amazon Fire connected to the sound bar via the optical cable and the sound is amazing. [ MORRIS Jan 09, 2015 ]
I don't know. We had it a few days and one the woofers got a rattle in it so we sent it back and got a different model. The sound was very good. But I think you want it on a shelf. Lance [ LANCE Feb 24, 2014 ]

Bruce You can use RCA cables to bring the sound into the Yamaha, but you will use some of the features in the sound bar. You'd will not have 5.1 surround sound and your bass may not be as true as you would like. You may be better off choosing a 2.1 sound bar, or you could use the optical output from a Blu-ray player. [ RANDY Feb 09, 2014 ]
It sure worked that way for me. I have a great surround sound system but wanted something to augment my TV without turning on the receiver and amplifier. I chose the YSP-1400 for it's features. IR pass through etc. I hooked it up to one of the USB ports on my TV and changed the setting on the TV for audio out and I was ready to go. I am very pleased with the sound and features. I love that the commercials don't have my wife yelling at me to turn down the sound. That my aging and stressed ears can hear dialogue with the "clear voice". That when I watch sports or something with music I can enhance it with the surround features. Sure, when watching movies or something I want to sound fantastic, I'll crank up the Morantz, but I am really pleased with this purchase. [ Douglas Jan 23, 2014 ]
yes. it is great sound alone or as extra with your surround system. [ JEFF A Jan 18, 2014 ]
Yes. If you want to use your existing surround sound to provide sound for movies, and the Yamaha YSP-1400 to provide sound to just the television...you can. Or you can hook up both your current surround sound, and the Yamaha YSP 1400 at the same time. The Yamaha uses optical cable inputs as well as RCA. It's also a Bluetooth device so you can sync wirelessly. It's sleek, stylish, and puts out great sound for movies. But to answer your question...yes. You can have them both hooked up. [ LARRY Jan 17, 2014 ]
Yes, as long as your system has the appropriate outputs to hook this sound bar up. This soundbar has all of the standard inputs, so using it how you want should not be an issue. [ Robert Jan 17, 2014 ]
I was told it could when I purchased it, but we were unsuccessful in connecting it to ours. Not knowing how we would have to hook up, I can't blame the sales rep. Our existing system requires a right and left channel going out of the soundbar, which it does not have. It only has a single out for a subwoofer. We ended up just going with the sound bar and buying a subwoofer, and that has worked out well. [ PAULE A Jan 17, 2014 ]
The PSW108 subwoofer from Polk will work great this soundbar. The soundbar does have a subwoofer output that you can use to connect to an external powered subwoofer. [ Jeff Dec 10, 2013 ] Staff
Thanks for your question Jim. This sound bar has a built in subwoofer. In addition, it also has a subwoofer output if you want even more powerful bass. If you would like to add an additional subwoofer, then any of the powered subwoofers we carry should work great. The Yamaha YST-FSW150 would be a great match. [ Jeff Nov 19, 2013 ] Staff
