Customized surround effects

Yamaha YSP-1400 5.1-channel sound bar

The YSP-1400 uses eight beam drivers to bounce sound off of walls for realistic surround sound.

Yamaha goes the extra mile to ensure the YSP-1400's surround effects will have you looking over your shoulder for speakers that aren't there. Settings for the beam drivers can be tweaked so they are optimized for your room. Use the included remote to select from three positions in which your bar is set up. To really dial in the sound, download the free Yamaha Home Theater Controller app to your Apple® or Android™ smartphone. Then use the app to input your precise room dimensions. The app uses Bluetooth to communicate with the bar, adjusting the beam drivers for accurate, immersive sound.

Enjoy wireless music with your smartphone

You can also use this bar's Bluetooth capability for wireless music streaming. Listen to MP3s stored on your portable device or streaming music from services like Pandora® Internet radio and Spotify. Or open up the free controller app and use your smartphone to choose from the YSP-1400's five different Cinema DSP surround modes for movies, TV, music, sports, and video games.

Worry-free setup and operation

One cable is likely all you'll need to connect the YSP-1400 to your TV to bypass its built-in speakers for room-filling sound. Most newer TVs have an optical digital output. The included optical cable should be all you need to start enjoying movies and TV shows in all their sonic glory. The included remote can learn your TV's power and volume commands. And a built-in IR repeater on the bar means that your TV remote will still work, even if the bar blocks the TV's infrared receiver.

Features

Digital Sound Projector Technology: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker creates virtual surround sound by producing beams of sound that reflect off the walls in controlled directions, delivering an amazingly immersive experience. The Yamaha YSP-1400 applies a sophisticated Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is a multichannel (up to 5.1ch) surround sound that sounds like a multi-speaker system, but without the need for extra speakers. The position of the beams can be adjusted for your listening location by using the included remote control or a free downloadable app on your smartphone.

Multi-Speaker Array w/ Dual Subwoofers: The YSP-1400 is equipped with eight 1.125" array speakers on the front and two 3.25" down-firing subwoofers integrated into the feet of the soundbar speaker. These drivers are powered by a built-in amplifier which provides 2 watts of power to each array speaker and 30 watts to each subwoofer. Combined, they deliver sound with exceptional power and presence. With 3.25" subwoofer drivers built into the feet of the sound bar combined with high-rigidity bass reflex ports and a large-volume cabinet, the YSP-1400 delivers clear, rich and deep bass for movie sound effects and music. The independent right and left channel configuration provides superior sound imaging.

Dolby Digital/DTS Compatible with Cinema DSP: The YSP-1400 is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound. Yamaha's ultra-sophisticated Cinema DSP technology enhances Dolby Digital/DTS and two-channel soundtracks to create a thrillingly realistic soundscape in your living room. When the source is two-channel, the sound is played back with Dolby Pro Logic II technology. You can select from five different Cinema DSP program modes; including Movie, Music, Sports, Game, or TV Program.

Analog + Digital Inputs: The Yamaha YSP-1400 is fitted with both analog and digital inputs to connect your flat-panel television and other AV components. The soundbar speaker features two analog inputs (3.5mm/RCA) and two digital inputs (optical/coaxial). The soundbar's digital inputs support PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS audio signals. You should turn your TV's speakers off or set the TV's volume to 0.

Audio Enhancements: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker provides a variety of audio adjustments to enhance your movie and music listening experience.

  • Clear Voice: The Clear Voice function raises the level of dialog and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies, TV shows, sports commentary, and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.
  • UniVolume: UniVolume is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials, and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray movie, or to listen to music on CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building. This feature can be switched On or Off.
  • Dynamic Range: Dynamic Range Control adjusts the dynamic range in relation to the volume, useful at low volume. It can be set to Normal, Standard, or Maximum.
  • Position: In order to calibrate the speaker's sound beams, you can customize your listening position and the dimensions (width x length) of your room.
  • Channel Level: The soundbar speaker's surround effect is achieved using six (5.1) audio channels. While listening to a series of test-tones from the speaker, you can adjust the volume level of each channel to balance the sound heard from your listening position.
  • Audio Delay Control: This technology adjusts the timing of the picture and dialog, so they are always in sync with one another.

Subwoofer Output: The Subwoofer Out mono-RCA jack on the rear-panel of the Yamaha soundbar speaker lets you connect an additional subwoofer to enjoy even more powerful bass sound. You cannot use the speaker's built-in subwoofer and the external subwoofer connection simultaneously.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar speaker supports Bluetooth (v.2.1+EDR) A2DP wireless audio streaming. This allows you to stream stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled device (such as your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/table, or computer/laptop) to the YSP-1400 soundbar speaker. You will continue to navigate your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device. This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Up to 8 devices can be paired, but only one can be used at a time. Once paired, the YSP-1400 will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').

Remote Control w/ IR Repeater: The YSP-1400's IR remote control is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power On or Off, adjust the volume, do other basic operations, and lets you switch the surround modes. The YSP-1400 also has the ability to "learn" the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to turn the YSP-1400 On or Off, and to adjust its volume. This allows you to use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation. Even if the YSP-1400 blocks the TV's remote control signal, the IR repeater on the back of the soundbar transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.

Remote App (for Apple iOS/Android): The YSP-1400 is compatible with Yamaha's Home Theater Control App (HT Controller), available for free download for Apple iOS (5.1+) and Android (2.3.3+) devices. Download this app from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store. This remote app makes it easy to control the sound bar via a Bluetooth connection; including input selections, surround modes, and detailed audios settings; including sound beams.

Mounting Options: With a rich, glossy-black finish and a slim design, the YSP-1400 complements the look of your flat-screen TV and fits neatly in front of it. When placed on a stand, the soundbar's feet allow it to straddle the base of your flat-panel TV. The soundbar speaker can also be mounted to a wall using the two rear-panel keyhole slots, the included mounting template, and mounting hardware (sold separately). For optimum surround sound effect, select a preset position mode (Left, Center, or Right) according to where the soundbar speaker is installed in your room.

Auto Standby: The soundbar will automatically turn off when there is no operation for 8 hours, or not audio input and no operation for 30 minutes.

I connected mine to an Infinity subwoofer and it works great. I use the Polk equipment in another room.

I don't know, I do not own a sub psw10. I don't know what that is.

Q
If an external powered subwoofer is used at what frequency is the crossover set at?
nicholas  Mar 23, 2015
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That Yamaha has a pretty dynamic range to not have an included subwoofer. The frequency response is 45-22k. If I were adding a subwoofer, I would have it crossed over at 50-60. I hope this information helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Am considering this bar in my cord cutting transition. Have Roku connected to Panasonic Plasma. With only optical connection from TV to Sound Bar -will I miss some of the audio? Including the formats found on Blu-ray: Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. It is my understanding that these formats can't get transmitted across optical. This is a small % of audio for me but still a consideration. DO I understand this correct?

I was sceptical about the optical as well. I don't seem to have lost out on any sound coming from the TV to optical only connection. You will actually set up the Yamaha App on your IPhone or Android device and set up the sound bar for distance and proximity to the television as well as Bass(sub), DVD, Music, Movies, etc. This sound bar is awsome. Second to no surround system I've ever owned. You won't lose any sound.
larry  Jan 10, 2015
A
Our roku is integrated in our tv, but we have the sound bar and tv connected by an optical connection and have not experienced any loss of audio. You do have the option of using RCA stereo connectors as well. We connected our bar along with an external subwoofer, which caused us to lose the auto sound level option ..... not relevant to your question but just thought I would throw it in.

I have Amazon Fire connected to the sound bar via the optical cable and the sound is amazing.

Q
my 42" Jensen TV doesnt have an optical port...can i use the RCA jacks to hook into the TV and if so will I lose any sound quality?
bruce  Feb 08, 2014
1 answer
A
Bruce You can use RCA cables to bring the sound into the Yamaha, but you will use some of the features in the sound bar. You'd will not have 5.1 surround sound and your bass may not be as true as you would like. You may be better off choosing a 2.1 sound bar, or you could use the optical output from a Blu-ray player.

Q
Can this be used with and existing surround sound system as a regular sound bar ?
enrico  Jan 16, 2014

A
It sure worked that way for me. I have a great surround sound system but wanted something to augment my TV without turning on the receiver and amplifier. I chose the YSP-1400 for it's features. IR pass through etc. I hooked it up to one of the USB ports on my TV and changed the setting on the TV for audio out and I was ready to go. I am very pleased with the sound and features. I love that the commercials don't have my wife yelling at me to turn down the sound. That my aging and stressed ears can hear dialogue with the "clear voice". That when I watch sports or something with music I can enhance it with the surround features. Sure, when watching movies or something I want to sound fantastic, I'll crank up the Morantz, but I am really pleased with this purchase.
douglas  Jan 23, 2014
A
yes. it is great sound alone or as extra with your surround system.
jeff a  Jan 18, 2014
A
Yes. If you want to use your existing surround sound to provide sound for movies, and the Yamaha YSP-1400 to provide sound to just the television...you can. Or you can hook up both your current surround sound, and the Yamaha YSP 1400 at the same time. The Yamaha uses optical cable inputs as well as RCA. It's also a Bluetooth device so you can sync wirelessly. It's sleek, stylish, and puts out great sound for movies. But to answer your question...yes. You can have them both hooked up.
larry  Jan 17, 2014
A
Yes, as long as your system has the appropriate outputs to hook this sound bar up. This soundbar has all of the standard inputs, so using it how you want should not be an issue.
robert  Jan 17, 2014
A
I was told it could when I purchased it, but we were unsuccessful in connecting it to ours. Not knowing how we would have to hook up, I can't blame the sales rep. Our existing system requires a right and left channel going out of the soundbar, which it does not have. It only has a single out for a subwoofer. We ended up just going with the sound bar and buying a subwoofer, and that has worked out well.
paule a  Jan 17, 2014
Q
Will the Yamaha YSP-1400 soundbar work with a Polk PSW108 subwoofer?
richard  Dec 09, 2013
1 answer
A
The PSW108 subwoofer from Polk will work great this soundbar. The soundbar does have a subwoofer output that you can use to connect to an external powered subwoofer.
jeff  Dec 10, 2013 (Staff)
Q
what size sub can you use and your recommendation?
jim d  Nov 19, 2013
1 answer
A
Thanks for your question Jim. This sound bar has a built in subwoofer. In addition, it also has a subwoofer output if you want even more powerful bass. If you would like to add an additional subwoofer, then any of the powered subwoofers we carry should work great. The Yamaha YST-FSW150 would be a great match.
