About the Yamaha YSP-2500 Digital Sound Projector

David Brown

Immersive sound, courtesy of your room (and Yamaha)

There's one crucial audio component that we don't sell at Crutchfield: walls. They play an important role in how music or movies sound in any room. Yamaha doesn't sell walls either, but they know how to put them to good use. The YSP-2500 sound bar uses Yamaha's digital sound projector technology to reflect sound off of your walls to create lifelike surround effects. Your couch will be awash in detailed 7.1-channel sound, with the wireless subwoofer providing the deep bass response that gives movies the extra kick they need. HDMI, Bluetooth, and other connections make this system much more than just an upgrade for your TV's speakers.

"Beam" drivers offer cool surround effects

The YSP-2500's sound bar features 16 built-in "beam" drivers — each powered by its own amplifier — to flood your room with sound that's coming at you from more than one direction. The drivers project narrow beams of sound at different angles, using timing algorithms and wall reflections to create a vivid surround sound effect. Because not all rooms are the same size and shape, Yamaha's IntelliBeam™ system allows you to optimize the sound bar for your room with the included setup mic. You can even adjust the beam angles to target a specific seating location — great for late-night use when you don't want lots of sound bouncing around and waking up sleeping spouses or kids.

HDMI connections for true 7.1-channel sound

When you connect your Blu-ray player to the YSP-2500 via HDMI, you can take advantage of this system's full 7.1-channel capability. It offers much more detail than most sound bars by delivering all the soundtrack effects in movies discretely, for a more intense and thrilling experience. The YSP-2500 can decode a wide variety of Dolby® and DTS® soundtracks, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for stunning, high-resolution sound. Thanks to this sound bar's three HDMI inputs, there's also room for a cable/satellite box and a gaming console, too.

The YSP-2500's 16 beam drivers are angled to reflect sound off of walls, for enveloping sound and realistic surround effects.

Bluetooth for music and control

Lots of sound bars have Bluetooth for wireless music listening from smartphones and tablets. The YSP-2500 takes Bluetooth a step further by allowing you control the system with your phone or tablet. Download the Yamaha Home Theater Controller app to your Apple® or Android™ device and use it to adjust the sound beams, select listening modes, and change the subwoofer volume. Of course, Bluetooth is also an easy way to enjoy your digital music collection or streaming music services with this system. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer can even help MP3s sound fuller.

Listening modes and more

What else does this feature-packed sound bar offer? There are listening modes for various situations and content, like watching sports, playing video games, or watching news programs or other shows that consist mostly of voices or dialogue. UniVolume keeps you from scrambling for the remote every time a loud commercial comes on. There's a front-panel display for viewing source selections (yes, you can dim it) as well as an on-screen guide for setup options. There's also a front-panel headphone jack, which delivers virtual surround sound for immersive listening that won't disturb others.

Digital Sound Projector (with 16 Speaker Array): The Yamaha YSP-2500's digital sound projector uses sixteen 1/8" array speakers controlled by Yamaha's YSP technology to deliver excellent sound quality with clearly positioned dialogue and superb surround effects. The 16 array speakers are powered by a 2W x 16ch digital amplifier. A rigid aluminum enclosure dampens unwanted vibrations. The Yamaha YSP-2500's digital sound projector applies a sophisticated Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multichannel (up to 7.1ch) surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system, but without the need for extra speakers.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer (with yAired Technology): The YSP-2500 includes a wireless powered subwoofer that houses dual 4" woofers inside a bass-reflex cabinet, with front-firing port, powered by a built-in 75-watt RMS amplifier (130W Peak). The powered sub enclosure's thick panels and internal bracing ensure a strong cabinet. The powered sub employs proprietary yAired wireless technology from Yamaha that uses lossless (uncompressed) signal transmission to achieve wireless sound quality that is as good as wired quality and the perfect synchronization between sounds and images for movies. The wireless powered sub also takes advantage of Yamaha's proprietary Advanced YST and a Linear Port to produce deep and smooth bass. Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance. The circuit board has an ideal grounding pattern that ensures stable current supply for prodigious bass output. This subwoofer is capable of delivering powerful movie effect sounds and rich, deep bass. You can adjust the soundbar speaker's subwoofer volume independent from the speaker's main volume for added bass response.

HD Audio Format Decoding: The YSP-2500 decodes HD Audio signals to ensure that you hear the best possible sound from Blu-ray Disc players, as well as from all other digital sources. The YSP-2500 supports the following digital audio formats.

    Audio Connector Audio Signal Formats
HDMI 2ch Linear PCM, 8ch Linear PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-ES, DTS-Neo 6, DTS-HD (Master Audio/High Resolution), DTS 96/24
Optical/Coaxial 2ch Linear PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS-ES, DTS-Neo 6, DTS 96/24
Stereo RCA 2ch Stereo, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx

Virtual Surround Modes: The YSP-2500 achieves virtual surround sound by directing sound beams off the walls to reach the listener from various angles. There are a variety of virtual surround modes to choose from:

    • Beam Modes for 5.1 Channels:
      • 5 Beam: typical surround with five full range channels
      • Stereo + 3 Beam: left and right stereo, plus center channel and left and right surround channels, ideal for live concert DVDs to narrow the stage but keep the depth and reflections of the venue
      • 3 Beam: outputs only the left, right, and center channels, widens the ideal listening area; surround right and left channels are mixed into the front right and left channels
    • Beam Modes for 7.1 Channels:
      • 5 BeamPlus2: outputs sound beams from the front right and left, center, and surround back right and left channels; the surround right and left channels are mixed into the front right and left and surround back right and left channels
      • Stereo + 3 BeamPlus 2: left and right stereo, plus center and surround back right and left channels; the surround right and left channels are mixed into the front right and left and surround back right and left channels
      • 3 Beam: outputs only the left, right, and center channels; surround right and left channels and surround back right and left channels are mixed into the front right and left channels
    • Stereo: 2-channel and 5-channel stereo without surround processing.
    • My Surround: for small listening area or when surround sound effects are unsubstantial due to the listening room conditions
    • Target Playback Mode: Target playback mode outputs sound beams from a single channel for optimal listening from a specific position.

10 Cinema DSP Modes: Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater. You can select 11 different programs, including three Movie, three Music, four Entertainment modes, and one headphone mode.

    • Music:
      • Music Video: reproduces a vibrant environment
      • Concert Hall: rich effect of a large round concert hall with a lot of presence, placing you near the center of the stage
      • Jazz Club: recreates "The Bottom Line", a famous jazz club in New York city, places you right in front of the stage
    • Movies:
      • Sci-Fi: clearly reproduces dialog and special effects, mimics a large space
      • Spectacle: reproduces a wide and grand environment
      • Adventure: reproduces the dynamics and excitement of fast moving action movies
    • Entertainment:
      • Sports: converges the commentator's voice on the center and broadens the overall atmosphere of the stadium
      • Talk Show: reproduces the excitement of live talk shows, while keeping the conversations at a comfortable volume.
      • Drama: stabilizes reverberations that match a wide range of movie genres and offers an optimum 3D feeling.
      • Game: suitable for adventure and role-playing games, representing the depth and spatial feeling of the field of play while offering movie-like surround effects
    • Headphones:
      • Virtual Surround: virtual surround sound is reproduced through your connected headphones

Pro Logic II Parameters: You can adjust the following parameters in Pro Logic II Music modes:

    • Panorama: Sends stereo signals to the surround speakers as well as the front speakers for a wraparound effect.`
    • Dimension: Adjusts the soundfield either towards the front or towards the rear of the room.
    • Center Width: Moves the center channel output completely towards the center speaker or towards the front left and right speakers.

Music Enhancer: Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3 or WMA, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible

IntelliBeam Automated System Calibration: This Yamaha exclusive feature ensures optimum multichannel sound reproduction with accurate image location. By monitoring and analyzing the sound with the microphone included with the YSP-2500, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimizing the level and frequency response of each beam. This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect. Make sure there are no obstacles between the IntelliBeam microphone and the walls in your listening room, as these objects obstruct the path of the beams. However, any objects that are in contact with the walls, will be regarded as a protruding part of the wall. The unit performs the following automatic optimizations with the aid of the supplied microphone.

    • Beam+Sound Optimize: Optimizes the beam angle, the beam delay, volume, and quality so that the parameters best match your listening environment.
    • Beam Optimize: Optimizes the beam angle so that the parameter best matches your listening environment.
    • Sound Optimize: Optimizes the beam delay, volume, and quality so that the parameters best match your listening environment.
Note: The YSP-2500 lets you store up to 3 IntelliBeam settings for easy recall. This is useful for saving settings under varying conditions (curtains open, curtains closed, etc).

Beam Settings: Once the Auto Setup is complete, you can fine-tune the Beam Settings.

    • Horizontal Angle: Set the horizontal angle of the listening position relative to the center of the speaker, this adjusts the angle of each beam to best match your listening position.
    • Vertical Angle: Set the vertical angle to best match your listening height, relative to the speaker.
    • Beam Travel Length: Total travel distance from speaker to reflecting surface to ear for each beam.
    • Focal Length: Distance from the speaker to the focal point of each beam (where the speaker would be if you had five separate speakers).
    • Image Location: This feature adjusts the direction from which the front left and right speakers are heard if they sound unnatural.

Tone + Dialog Control: You can adjust the YSP-2500's Bass & Treble to increase or decrease the system's high/low frequency sound. You can also use the system's "Clear Voice" feature to improve the intelligibility of human voices during playback.

Dynamic Range: The Yamaha YSP-2500 provides to Dynamic Range adjustments.

    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) adjusts the dynamic range in relation to the volume, useful at low volume.
    • Dynamic Range: The amount of dynamic range compression applied to bitstream signals is adjustable; Min/Auto is suitable for low volume listening, Standard is typical for home use, and Max doesn't compress the dynamic range at all.

Volume Adjustments: The Yamaha YSP-2500 Digital Sound Projector System offers unique volume control settings.

    • UniVolume: UniVolume is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray movie or to listen to music on CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
    • Volume Trim: The level (+/-12) of each input can be adjusted so the volume remains the same when switching from one input to another.
    • Channel Level: Adjusts the volume (+/-20) of playback for each channel (audio in each direction) so that sounds are evenly distributed in their respective directions.
    • Turn On Volume: The system's volume can be set to come on at a preset level (1-99) when power is turned on.
    HDMI + Bluetooth Connectivity

HDMI 2.0: The Yamaha YSP-2500's digital sound projector provides 3 inputs/1 output HDMI 2.0 connections with support for 4K/60Hz pass-through and 1080p (60/24Hz) resolution. HDMI 2.0 also supports 3D pass-through, ARC, Deep Color, x.v.Color, and Auto Lip-Sync.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: 4K/60Hz pass-through allows the Yamaha YSP-2500 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K compatible TV or display monitor. The YSP-2500's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
    • 1080/24p: The YSP-2500 allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player
    • 3D-Ready: The HDMI connections will accept 3D video from your 3D Blu-ray player and output the video signal in 3D to your 3D-ready HDTV.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color: The Yamaha digital projector also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • Auto Lip-Sync: The YSP-2500 automatically adjusts the delay in output timing between video signals and audio signals so they match when you are watching a movie. You can also manual adjust the audio delay between 0 to 500 ms.
Note: Because with most televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog, we recommend that you connect your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable box, or Gaming console to the Yamaha digital sound projector directly; and then connect the YSP-2500's ARC-enabled HDMI output to your TV's ARC-enabled HDMI input. This setup will give you with the best overall sound performance.

Analog + Digital Audio Inputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the digital sound projector is equipped with one analog input (stereo RCA) and three digital audio inputs (2 optical/1 coaxial). The optical and coaxial digital inputs support up to 5.1ch multichannel audio.

Note: The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).

Bluetooth Audio Streaming w/ aptX: The Yamaha YSP-2500 features built-in Bluetooth for wireless connection to your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, Windows PC, Mac Computer, and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. You'll be able to stream stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, or computer to the Yamaha digital sound projector system. The YSP-2500 even employs AptX audio coding technology for lossless, CD-quality streaming with compatible aptX-compatible phones (like Android 4.0+). You will still control your music and view song/artist information from your Bluetooth-enabled device. Up to 8 devices can be paired, but only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Yamaha YSP-2500

Headphone Jack: The Yamaha YSP-2500 offers a front-panel headphone jack (3.5mm) for connecting a set of headphones for private listening. The system's soundbar speaker and sub will mute while headphones are connected.

Subwoofer Output: The digital sound projector features a mono-RCA sub output if you choose to connect the included powered subwoofer with an optional subwoofer cable (sold separately), instead of wirelessly.

    Convenience Features

Remote App: Download Yamaha's free Home Theater Controller app for Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.3.3+) to easily perform a variety of functions from your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphone/tablet. Basic functions include Input Selection and Volume Up/Down. Advanced functions include selecting Listening Modes, Cinema DSP modes, or adjusting Sound Beams for the best listening experience.

Note: This remote app requires an active Bluetooth wireless connection between the Yamaha soundbar system and your Apple or Android mobile device.

Remote Control + HDMI Control: The YSP-2500 includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the system. You can also use your TV's remote control to operate this system, if your television supports the HDMI control function and is connected to digital sound projector's HDMI output. This unit will automatically select the input according to the input source setting on your TV. You will also be able to turn on/off the system with your television.

Note: Even if the soundbar speaker blocks your TV's remote control signal, the unit's remote repeater function transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.

Front-Panel & On-Screen Display: The digital sound projector is equipped with a front-panel display to indicate source status. The front-panel LCD offers adjustable brightness control. You can even turn the display off. The Yamaha digital sound projector also features a multi-language on-screen display. Choose from English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Dutch, and Swedish.

Eco Function: The YSP-2500 automatically enters standby mode when there is no operation for 3 hours or no input signal for 30 minutes.

    Mounting Options

Table-Top or Wall-Mount Soundbar: The digital sound projector can be placed horizontally on a shelf or a stand above or below your flat-panel TV. The integrated feet can be removed to decrease the height of the soundbar speaker to 2.0", if necessary. Positioning can be parallel to a wall or in a corner. The only major requirement is the room must have side and rear walls for beam reflection to create the surround effect. The optional wall-mount bracket (022SPMK20, sold separately) can be used to mount the digital sound projector speaker to your wall.

Vertical or Horizontal Mount Sub: The wireless powered sub does not have to be connected to the soundbar speaker, so setup and placement is faster and easier. Will the soundbar pass the sound\video through from my cable box to my TV when the soundbar is off? Basically, If the cable box is plugged into an HDMI port on the soundbar will the unit still allow the sound and picture to come through to my TV even when the soundbar is powered off?

If I'm understanding your question correctly. You will still get a picture when the sound bar is off, but know sound will occur unless the unit is on.
    robert  Mar 22, 2016
    A
Technically, no, when the soundbar is powered off no audio or video will pass through it. However, this might not be an issue for you. I've found that since the system is calibrated to my room the sound is focused on the listening area. Also, dialogue is much clearer than TV speakers. So, I can listen at a reasonable volume without disturbing the rest of the house. You may prefer always using the soundbar. If you do want to listen to audio from your TV speakers with the soundbar turned off, I'd suggest you connect the cable box directly to your TV via HDMI, then connect optical audio from the TV output to the soundbar input. Then you'll have the option to use the soundbar or TV speakers.

The digital sound projector features a mono-RCA sub output to connect a subwoofer. The included subwoofer is the only one that can be connected wirelessly, but it would be possible to use a different subwoofer with this output.

Hi, James! On page 29 of the owner's manual it states - " the supplied subwoofer can only be connected. In the troubleshooting section page 70 it states - " This unit supports the supplied subwoofer NS-WSW120 only. I was under an earlier impression that one could use another subwoofer. Based on the manual, this does not seem to support that idea. Hope this helps!

Because it's a wireless sub, it would have to be able to effectively link with the main unit. Probably best chance would be if the alternate sub were also a Yamaha. I've never tried a different sub, so I cannot speak from experience.

if you use a HDMI and pass through the sound bar to the tv, the sound bar turns on and off with tv. Volume works also through tv. So if your dish remote works your tv. You should be good.

I have approximately the same set up as your dimensions. Though I have a fairly wide doorway opening on one side wall. To me it seems to work great, and the sound quality is fantastic. Also the preset listening modes work great, you can really tell the difference between modes. The univolume and remote repeater are very useful features as well.

This system gives good sound, but not much depth. To get really good sound you will probably need to go with an a/v receiver and seperate speakers & subwoofer. That will cost more, but you will be much happier in the long run. Crutchfields excellent return policy allowed me to do just that. They always have receivers and speakers on sale.

Glen, the room my sound bar is in only has two walls and is a large room. The best I can get is 3 band surround. It sounds good and sometimes it seems the sounds are coming from behind. I understood my room had limitations going into the purchase the sound bar seemed the best choice for what I have. If you actually have a room with the correct walls for the sound to reflect off I believe the machine will make the adjustments to reflect correctly. To set it up you put a mic that comes with it on a tri pod and it bounces sound off the walls back to the mic and decides it settings from the data it receives. Hope this helps. Doug

Yes, it does work in my wide room when working. The subwoofer does not work well. The subwoofer shuts off quite a bit. I've hard wired the subwoofer and it has not cured the problem. If I unplug the subwoofer and re-plug it in then it re-sets to normal operation. It's a pain.

A wide vs. narrow room is not the issue; it's more to do with size and if sound can reflect off the walls or not. I recommend reading the owner's manual before purchasing since there is a section on room types and "unrecommended listening environments" that you can compare to your room. I actually had some odd things in my living room: a half-wall, curtains, a large opening (upper half of a wall) to an adjacent room. However, based on the manual and where I positioned it I still had enough reflective surfaces and the calibration worked perfectly.

My room is about 26' wide x 14' deep - the surround sound works but is probably not optimal. The auto-setup feature of the unit will attempt to make the best sound adjustment for the room.

Have not tried those but had a couple year old $600 dollar Sony. Much better for movies/tv. Really like sound leveling for quite dialogue. Would give 4.5 out of 5 (not as good for music but that is not my purpose

I prefer the Definitive W Studio Sound Bar over the Yamaha YSP 2500. My room was odd shape for the sound projector to give me a surround effect. Music played on the device was also disappointing.

Sorry, I haven't tried either of those products. I did compare the YSP-2500 against the Sonos Playbar and Sub, and for the money, I think the Yamaha is better sounding for how I use the system and for what I want out of it - watching movies, mostly, with surround sound. And the fact that the Sonos does not support Bluetooth was a definite con for me.

I went from a 7.1 full surrond setup (Yamaha Receive/Polk speakers and sub ) with speakers and wires all over the place to this to the sound bar and quite honestly I am happy with it. The YSP-2500 does provide a surround sound like environment, is it as good as a full surround system, heck no, but its not bad either. I went and heard all 3 of the bars you mentioned and the Sony as well in various stores. What struck me is they all approach the problem slightly differently. I am a fan of Yamaha products and I do think they provide a good balance. Harry Potter sounded absolutely fabulous in my living room and my worries about an under powered sub woofer were dismissed and the DSP Movie modes were outstanding. The Bluetooth interface for music is good but not exceptional. Pesonally, what I think it boils down to are what your personal tastes are and the acoustics of the rooom you are putting it in. Sadly you will never really get that from listening in a store environment. Please bear in mind sound bars have to make compromises, it is simply a matter of physics.
