Our take on the Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57

The Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57 CD receiver offers an impressive blend of versatile function and high style. Built-in Bluetooth® capability and an included microphone allow a seamless integration of your mobile phone and other Bluetooth enabled devices. But it doesn't stop there — you'll enjoy a built-in USB input with included cable, a handy front-panel auxiliary input, and an optional adapter for connecting and charging your iPod®.

The understated yet classy design exudes style — no flashy light shows, just a thoughtfully laid out face with an elegant, ergonomic feel. Just twist the control knob or push the logically placed buttons to access the function you're looking for. The driver-friendly 3-line face gives you the information you need without being a distraction.

The Hamburg's sturdy internal amp drives your speakers with ease, while front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs give you room to expand your system with external amps and subs if you choose. The 3-band equalizer and bass boost provide ample tools for tweaking the sound.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Features

Graphic Dot Matrix Display: The Hamburg MP57 features a white backlit graphic dot matrix display. In the display menu, you can change the LCD display to suit your viewing angle. There are 13 choices from -6 to +6.

Variable Display Dimming Levels: You can independently set the dimming level for daytime and nighttime displays. Each display can be set between 1 (dim) and 16 (bright). The display switches from day to night levels when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. Note: The orange illumination wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the display switching to take place.

EQ Presets: The unit features preset EQ sound effects for specific types of music. You can select the Rock, Pop, or Classic preset EQ setting.

Enhanced Audio: In addition to traditional bass and treble settings from -7 to +7, you can further adjust the sound by using enhanced bass, middle, and treble settings. You can choose the center frequencies for E-Bass (60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz), E-Middle (500Hz, 1kHz, 1.5kHz, 2.5kHz), and E-Treble (10kHz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, 17.5kHz). You can select a Quality Factor (Q-Factor) for E-Bass (1.0, 1.25, 1.5 or 2) and for E-Middle (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25). The gain for E-Middle is adjustable from -7 to +7.

X-Bass: The X-Bass feature can be used to boost the bass at low volume levels. You can set the X-Bass boost to one of three levels. Enhanced X-Bass lets you select one of three center frequencies (50Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz). The X-Bass feature, when activated, is applied to all sources.

Power-On Volume: You can choose the volume setting at which the receiver plays when it is turned on. In the menu, you can choose "Last Volume" and the unit will be set to the same volume level as when it was last turned off. The maximum "Last Volume" setting is 38. If you turned off the unit with the volume setting higher than 38, the unit will default to a turn-on volume of 38. You can also choose a default volume setting between minimum and maximum (0-66) Note: If the power-on volume is set to a high level, you can possibly damage your hearing or your audio equipment.

Mute/Telephone Level: You can set the mute level to a volume setting between minimum and maximum (0-66). You can also set a default volume level for phone calls

Automatic Sound: The Automatic Sound function automatically adjusts the volume of the sound system to the vehicle's speed. As the vehicle increases in speed, the level of road and wind noise also increase, and the radio's volume will also rise to compensate for the higher noise level. As the car slows down, and the noises decrease, the volume of the radio also decreases. The Automatic Sound level can be adjusted in 6 increments (0-5). Note: In order for the Automatic Sound function to work, the white wire (labeled "Gala") must be connected to the vehicle's speed sensor circuit.

Ignition Off Turn-On: The unit can be turned on manually even if the ignition is turned off. The receiver will stay on in this mode for approximately one hour and will automatically shut itself off to avoid running down the battery.

Off Timer: After opening the control panel, the unit will switch off after a pre-selected time between 0 and 30 seconds.

Travel Store: You can automatically store the strongest 6 AM and 6 FM station using the Travel Store function. These presets are stored in bands FMT and AMT.

Adjustable Scan Tuning: The scan feature briefly plays all the receivable stations. You can set the scanning time between 5 and 30 seconds. Note: When the radio scan time is changed, it also resets the CD intro scan time for the in-dash player and the connected CD changer.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Hamburg MP57 can play MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and USB-based devices. The format of the recordings must be ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet. This unit can support a maximum of 999 files in 99 directories on CDs, or up to 1500 files on a USB device. During MP3/WMA playback, you can display various types of information on the current track, including track/file name, artist name, album name, playing time, and clock. In the browse mode, you can display up to 3 lines at a time, which allows you to scroll through the tracks in a folder or a playlist and select a track to play.

Telephone/Navigation Mute: If the receiver is connected to a mobile telephone with an external mute circuit or a compatible navigation unit, the receiver's volume is muted whenever the mobile telephone is "picked up" or when a navigation announcement is made. The power wiring harness contains a telephone mute wire that must be connected to the phone's mute circuit or the navigation mute wire in order for this feature to function.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 4-channel preamp output harness, a separate mono (single channel) non-fading subwoofer output is provided on the power harness. You can control the subwoofer output level from 0 to 7, and the frequency of the low-pass filter can be set to 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (no filtering).

Auxiliary Inputs: The Hamburg MP57 is equipped with a 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input on the front panel. You can connect an auxiliary input source, such as a portable MiniDisc/DVD/MP3 player. You can plug in an additional auxiliary source by connecting an optional auxiliary input adapter (023AUXIN1R) to the rear panel, instead of a CD changer or iPod adapter.

Remote Control: The Hamburg MP57 comes with a small 8-button remote control. The supplied remote has the following functions: Volume Up, Volume Down, Source Select, Mute, and Select Up/Dn/Left/Right. The unit cannot be turned on or off with the remote. Dimensions: W=1.375", L=2.223", D=0.27".

Clock Display Note: In the menu, you can select the unit for "Clock On" or "Clock Off" operation. When set to "Clock On", the clock will continue to display and the buttons remain illuminated after the unit is turned off as long as the ignition is in the "On" or "Accessory" position. When set to "Clock Off", the display and button illumination is turned off when the unit is turned off.

Clock Mode: You can set the clock display to 12-hour or 24-hour mode.

External Device Controls

USB Input: The Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57 is equipped with a plug-in USB input on a 2' pigtail. It is compatible with Type A USB connectors. You can playback MP3 and WMA files recorded onto USB Flash Drives (or "thumb" drives) or USB-based hard drive devices. For the device to be recognized, it must be specified as a mass storage device, formatted using the FAT16 or FAT32 file system.

iPod Ready: The receiver is compatible with the Blaupunkt iPod Aux Cable (item # 023IPODCBL). When the iPod cable is connected, the audio from the iPod can be played through the receiver. You will still need to control the iPod directly--the receiver cannot control the device. The iPod cable is compatible with all iPods equipped with a standard dock connector, including the new iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod nano (3rd/4th generation), and iPod touch (1st/2nd generation). It is not compatible with the iPhone or iPhone 3G.

Note: This optional cable (023IPODCBL) will not charge the iPod nano (4th generation or iPod touch (2nd generation) without the Scosche passPORT (142IFWA). When the iPod Aux Cable is in use, you cannot connect a CD changer to this unit.

Bluetooth: This unit features an integrated Bluetooth module to allow the hands-free use of a phone via a Bluetooth connection. The Bluetooth capable cell phone can remain in a purse or glove compartment, giving you both hands free for steering. The supplied microphone can be mounted on your visor or dash with the included clip and self-adhesive mounts. Up to 5 phones can be registered to the receiver, however, only one Bluetooth connection can exist at a time. Two Bluetooth buttons (answer call and reject call) can be found on the front panel of the radio. You can store a phone number in each one of the five presets on the front panel.

Bluetooth Phone Compatibility: The Hamburg MP57's Bluetooth feature is compatible with the following phones:

  • Apple: iPhone/iPhone 3G
  • BenQ Siemens: EF81
  • Motorola: L6, RAZR V3i, V3, V360, V361
  • Nokia: 6111, 6280, 6230i, 6670b, N70
  • Panasonic: MX7, SA7, VS6, VS7
  • Samsung: SGH-D600, SGH-D500, SGH-D500E, SGH-D500C, SGH-D508
  • Sony Ericcsson: D750, K750i, P910, W550c, W600, W800i, Z520i

Note: This list is current as of June 2007. As new models are manufactured, the list of compatible phones will continue to grow.

Changer Controls: This head unit can directly control the following Blaupunkt changers: CDC A 03, CDC A 08, and IDC A 09.

Note: The IDC A 09 changer is only compatible with the Hamburg MP57 if it has not been previously connected to a 2002 or older Blaupunkt receiver. A code is set inside the IDC A 09 when it is connected to the older radio, making the changer incompatible with 2003 and newer receivers. The changer would need to be sent back to the manufacturer to reset the code in order to make it compatible again.

Display Options: During CD changer operation, the following items are displayed:

  • Icon for CD changer
  • Track number
  • Playing time
  • Sound preset
  • Time (can be on or off)
  • CD number
  • Indicators for random or repeat play if activated

I found the MP57 to be outstanding. As soon as you figure out the controls, it's pretty simple to navigate through the selections. I'm very impressed in the sound quality and it's well worth the money! Definitely a FIVE STAR!
Pros:
I installed a MP57 into my 2008 Toyota Tacoma and to my surprise I'm impressed with this stereo. Radio stations are much clear and it has better reception than the original stereo did. It also sounds much better on stock speakers. The Bluetooth works well, haven't had any issues yet. Both the AUX and the USB ports are very useful when listening to music either on i-pod, i-phone, or a USB device.
Cons:
The only thing I found to be a little disturbing is the small clock located on the bottom of the screen. It disappears when listening to a CD. However, my Tacoma has a separate clock located just below my stereo deck, so it doesn't bother me.

Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57

Written By Michael, NJ on Tuesday, January 05, 2010

I bought this for the bluetooth and the high powered internal amplifier. When using the
unit without amps, it was descent. The bluetooth functionality was always ok, but the
sound quality never seemed to be good for the other person, but I am in a dodge pickup
that is a bit noisy, so not sure if any other unit would be better.

I had some quirkiness with the clock where it wouldn't change time until you performed
some sort of a function. You never knew if the time was correct ot had temporarily
locked up until you fiddled with it. Not the end of the worlld, but annoying.

Once I amped my system, I was not thrilled with it. The preamp signal is just noisy in
my opinion and the 3v pre outs dont do enough to keep the signal to noise ratio in check.

If you want an affordable head unit with blue tooth and you never plan to install amps,
not a bad unit, but if you are going to expland or already have amps, I would look at other
units.

not impressed

Written By Raymond, leonard,tx on Wednesday, July 22, 2009

i bought this radio because it looked like a decent product. My first car had a blaupunkt in it and it was awsome. I liked this one because of the external aux jack on the face. Maybe i just got a bad radio but this one gives me a head ache the aux output on the face no longer works it will stay on for a few moments then just cuts out and goes to tuner mode. the cd player is horrible it skips on every little bump in the road i believe this to be about a 99 dollar radio not 199.

ALMOST AWESOME

Written By wjd_la-j, fleetwood, PA on Friday, June 26, 2009

Well, the thing is great. Bluetooth is something I don't know how I've lived without. I have a 2001 VW GTI and routed the mic to the overhead sunroof control area.

My issues... the menu navigation is just plain stupid. They could have done a lot better there, but once you are set up, there really isn't much need to go in there too often... and you do get the hang of it.. sorta.

I had a whicked alternator whine. I've tried everything to fix it, direct to chassis ground, direct to battery power.. It's much less noticeable now, but not perfect. I may try to return it and get a new one, but only if I can do so without sending in the mic, etc. ...it may also be that the alternator is on the way out, although it didn't do this with my mp56

Now to the reason I gave 4 stars.. I have a 32g thumb drive with almost all of my music on there.. It works. Great. but I like shuffle. and the shuffle, or "mix" on this head unit is TERRIBLE. It will only shuffle from nearby folders.. Example. Say I have 10 folders for every letter in the alphabet.. If I start the mix while I'm listening to "Nirvana", it will only shuffle from folders that start with M, N, and O.. The chance of hearing "Primus" is slim, the chance of hearing Alice in Chains? Never happen.

Otherwise, awesome headunit. I'm very pleased with my purchase. The first I've made from Crutchfield, but from here on out, I'll never buy anywhere else!

Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57

Written By TurboPepe, Independence, IA, USA on Monday, May 18, 2009

Overall a very good product. We bought this unit to replace the dead factory stereo, very easy to use and setup was simple after you get the hang of which buttons to step through the menus with. Everything worked great especially the bluetooth, with the exception of the USB which worked the 1st time and hasn't worked sense. My hunch says it is the cheap cable that came with it but I may never know because I can't find a replacement and even if I do, I'm not sure if it is worth disassembly of the dash to us(USB input is on back of unit). Install wasn't easy as it was my 1st install ever, but after cramming the wiring back in the dash everything is fine!!

Jay

Written By Jay, Chicago, IL on Wednesday, April 22, 2009

I was looking for a radio that would look good in my truck, an '02 Dodge Ram 1500, and has more than enough power to handle new speakers as well. When I found this radio, it had more power than the other radios I was considering, and did have a sleek, non-busy appearance.

Install was very simple, and very straight-forward. To be honest, I didn't even need the directions, but I've replaced the radio in every car I've owned, (4 cars, and 3 trucks). But the directions would be very helpful to someone who hasn't installed a radio before, it's more pictures than text, which is a big plus in my book. The only time consuming thing was wiring up the harness. And, FYI, the "Gala" wire is for the speed-volume automatic adjuster.

After reading the reviews, I decided to tape the antenna cable into the adapter, and into the radio as well, as it doesn't fit as tight as you would think. I'd recommend everyone do this, it'll save hassles later.

The Bluetooth setup was a breeze, and with one test call, there was no echos that could be heard. The initial volume is kinda low, but it can be adjusted. And, even though it wasn't listed, my Blackberry Curve works flawlessly.

All said and done, the radio sounds great. Even with stock speakers, the highs and lows sound so much better over a stock radio. The bass shakes my mirrors!!

Very happy with this unit

Written By Patrick, Bakersfield on Friday, April 03, 2009

This stereo has so many great features and only a couple of negatives.
The Bluetooth works incredibly well with my Verizon XV6800; clear sound, no static, good noise rejection - I can even talk with the window open! Pairs in about 10 seconds from power-on.
The volume level for the auxiliary input is lower than the USB, CD or tuner, but it is adjustable.
Installation in my 2002 Buick Rendezvous was pretty straightforward and easy. Crutchfield's installation details section sid " Unbolt or cut out the factory stereo's rear support bracket to make room for your new receiver", but I did not have to do this (I had the 6-speaker, non-premium sound system). Make sure you get the chime adapter - you won't need to cut any factory wires!
The only negatives concern the clock: The display is small when the unit is on and you cannot set it to appear larger. Also, the clock doesn't update when using the auxiliary input.
Radio reception is excellent, though I don't listen to it much.
Highly recommended!

Best buy in car audio today

Written By Andrew, Lancaster, ca on Friday, March 27, 2009

Installation in a 2000 Mercedes C-Class was a simple plug-n-play. The unit was installed, & I'm not joking, in less than ten minutes. This does not include installing the microphone & USB cable -- this I'm leaving for the weekend. But that's about a half hour job, no more.

The sound of the unit is much, much better than the factory unit. Controls are all laid out logically. The Menu, in contrast to other reviewers, I found to be quite simple to master, without referring to the manual. No surprises here.

Radio reception is excellent, given that I'm almost 100 mi from LA, and behind a mountain range no less. I was especially surprised at the great AM reception.

There is some alternator whine (barely noticable) on FM, & it seems to become more noticable as the unit warms up -- can't hear the whine when the unit is first turned on. But note that this whine is barely noticable. An in-line filter should cure this.

The simple, spartan (no bling bling) looks of the unit fits well inside the Benz.

For the price of this unit, & the features it offers, I would recomment this unit to everyone, especially Benz and other German car owners.

Mediocre at best

Written By Joe, Brandon, MS on Sunday, March 01, 2009

I bought this unit almost 1 year ago to replace the factory unit in my 1990 Porsche 944 convertible. As mentioned by others, I find the radio reception to be weak, even on local stations. I use the rear auxillary input for my Sirius radio and have alternator whine which does not happen in my other vehicles with the same Sirius receiver. What I really bought this unit for was the bluetooth functionality.

After installing, I tried out the bluetooth and people I called complained of a very annoying echo on their end of the call. I tried two different phones, a Nokia 6102 and a Blackberry Curve, same problem on both. I experimented with multiple locations for the mic with no luck. I recently called Crutchfield and the advisor was not aware of the problem and, therefore; referred me to Blaupunkt. The tech I spoke with at Blaupunkt informed me that "the only fix is to move the mic in different locations. It may not work correctly in a car with a small interior due to speaker feedback." Guess I shouldn't have waited so long and returned it within the 30 days.

As others have mentioned, the menu is not intuitive and requires a lot of button pushes just to make simple adjustments such as treble and bass. The mp3 has worked fine for me with decent sound quality.

Overall, I would not recommend this unit and will be looking for another unit.
