Blaupunkt

Our take on the Blaupunkt Kingston MP47

In simpler times, you bought CDs, put them in your CD receiver, and listened to them. But now you've got your music library on an iPod® or other portable player, or on discs crammed full of MP3 and WMA files. You may even be carrying hundreds of megabytes of music on a USB thumb drive.

The Blaupunkt Kingston MP47 CD receiver lets you tap into this treasure trove of digital entertainment. The USB thumb drive? The Kingston offers a built-in USB input, with a handy cable for connecting your thumb drive or other USB device. An iPod? Add Blaupunkt's iPod adapter to play your music library through the Kingston while your iPod charges. MP3 and WMA discs? No problem — the Kingston spins them with ease, along with regular CDs. A front-panel auxiliary input provides quick connection for a plug-and-play satellite radio or other audio source.

The versatile Kingston cuts a fine figure in your dash, with its understated style and user-friendly design. Pick your own background color for the display — the Variocolor display gives you over 4,000 choices. The strong internal amplifier creates full-bodied sound in your car but, if you want to expand, the front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs help you build the system of your dreams.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility with this receiver may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Features

Vario Color Display: The Kingston MP47 features a Vario Color display. You can manually select one of 16 values of Red, Green, and Blue, giving you a possibility of 4096 colors. You can also select one of 16 values of Red and Green (the Blue value is fixed at 16), giving you 256 color choices. The Color Scan feature cycles through all the possible display colors in approximately a minute, allowing you to choose the one you prefer.

Variable Display Dimming Levels: You can independently set the dimming level for daytime and nighttime displays. Each display can be set between 1 (dim) and 16 (bright). The display switches from day to night levels when the vehicle's headlights are turned on. Note: The orange illumination wire in the power harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for the display switching to take place.

EQ Presets: The unit features preset EQ sound effects for specific types of music. You can select the Rock, Pop, or Classic preset EQ setting.

Enhanced Audio: In addition to traditional bass and treble settings from -7 to +7, you can further adjust the sound by using enhanced bass, middle, and treble settings. You can choose the center frequencies for E-Bass (60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz), E-Middle (500Hz, 1kHz, 1.5kHz, 2kHz), and E-Treble (10kHz, 12.5kHz, 15kHz, 17kHz). You can select a Quality Factor (Q-Factor) for E-Bass (1.0, 1.25, 1.5 or 2) and for E-Middle (0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25). The gain for E-Middle is adjustable from -7 to +7.

X-Bass: The X-Bass feature can be used to boost the bass at low volume levels. You can set the X-Bass boost to one of three levels. Enhanced X-Bass lets you select one of three center frequencies (50Hz, 100Hz, or 200Hz). The X-Bass feature, when activated, is applied to all sources.

Power-On Volume: You can choose the volume setting at which the receiver plays when it is turned on. In the menu, you can choose "Last Volume" and the unit will be set to the same volume level as when it was last turned off. The maximum "Last Volume" setting is 38. If you turned off the unit with the volume setting higher than 38, the unit will default to a turn-on volume of 38. You can also choose a default volume setting between minimum and maximum (0-66) Note: If the power-on volume is set to a high level, you can possibly damage your hearing or your audio equipment.

Mute Level: You can set the mute level to a volume setting between minimum and maximum (0-66).

Automatic Sound: The Automatic Sound function automatically adjusts the volume of the sound system to the vehicle's speed. As the vehicle increases in speed, the level of road and wind noise also increase, and the radio's volume will also rise to compensate for the higher noise level. As the car slows down, and the noises decrease, the volume of the radio also decreases. The Automatic Sound level can be adjusted in 6 increments (0-5). Note: In order for the Automatic Sound function to work, the white wire (labeled "Gala") must be connected to the vehicle's speed sensor circuit.

Ignition Off Turn-On: The unit can be turned on manually even if the ignition is turned off. The receiver will stay on in this mode for approximately one hour and will automatically shut itself off to avoid running down the battery.

Off Timer: After opening the control panel, the unit will switch off after a pre-selected time between 0 and 30 seconds.

Travel Store: You can automatically store the strongest 6 AM and 6 FM station using the Travel Store function. These presets are stored in bands FMT and AMT.

Adjustable Scan Tuning: The scan feature briefly plays all the receivable stations. You can set the scanning time between 5 and 30 seconds. Note: When the radio scan time is changed, it also resets the CD intro scan time for the in-dash player and the connected CD changer.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Kingston MP47 can play MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and USB-based devices. The format of the recordings must be ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet. This unit can support a maximum of 999 files in 99 directories on CDs, or up to 1500 files on a USB device. During MP3/WMA playback, you can display various types of information on the current track, including file name, artist name, album name, playing time, and clock.

Telephone/Navigation Mute: If the receiver is connected to a mobile telephone with an external mute circuit or a compatible navigation unit, the receiver's volume is muted whenever the mobile telephone is "picked up" or when a navigation announcement is made. The power wiring harness contains a telephone mute wire that must be connected to the phone's mute circuit or the navigation mute wire in order for this feature to function.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to the 4-channel preamp output harness, a separate mono (single channel) non-fading subwoofer output is provided on the power harness. You can control the subwoofer output level from 0 to 7, and the frequency of the low-pass filter can be set to 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (no filtering).

Auxiliary Inputs: The Kingston MP47 is equipped with a 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input on the front panel. You can connect an auxiliary input source, such as a portable MiniDisc/DVD/MP3 player. You can plug in an additional auxiliary source by connecting an optional auxiliary input adapter (023AUXIN1R) to the rear panel, instead of a CD changer or iPod adapter.

Remote Control: The Kingston MP47 comes with a small 8-button remote control. The supplied remote has the following functions: Volume Up, Volume Down, Source Select, Mute, and Select Up/Dn/Left/Right. The unit cannot be turned on or off with the remote. Dimensions: W=1.375", L=2.223", D=0.27".

Clock Display Note: In the menu, you can select the unit for "Clock On" or "Clock Off" operation. When set to "Clock On", the clock will continue to display and the buttons remain illuminated after the unit is turned off as long as the ignition is in the "On" or "Accessory" position. When set to "Clock Off", the display and button illumination is turned off when the unit is turned off.

Clock Mode: You can set the clock display to 12-hour or 24-hour mode.

External Device Controls

USB Input: The Blaupunkt Kingston MP47 is equipped with a plug-in USB input on a 2' pigtail. It is compatible with Type A USB connectors. You can playback MP3 and WMA files recorded onto USB Flash Drives (or "thumb" drives) or USB-based hard drive devices. For the device to be recognized, it must be specified as a mass storage device, formatted using the FAT16 or FAT32 file system.

iPod Ready: The receiver is compatible with the Blaupunkt iPod Aux Cable (item # 023IPODCBL). When the iPod cable is connected, the audio from the iPod can be played through the receiver. You will still need to control the iPod directly--the receiver cannot control the device. Note: When the iPod Aux Cable is in use, you cannot connect a CD changer to this unit.

Bluetooth/USB Adapter Ready: With the optional Bluetooth/USB interface (023BLAUBLU), you can place and accept "hands free" cellular phone calls through this head unit. You can also play MP3 files stored on your Bluetooth cell phone. Up to 5 Bluetooth-capable phones can be registered to the adapter. In addition, the adapter has a USB input for plugging in portable digital audio players with USB outputs or USB storage devices.

Compatibility: This head unit can directly control the following Blaupunkt changers: CDC A 03, CDC A 08, and IDC A 09. During CD changer operation, you have 3 display options:

  • Track Number and Play Time
  • Track Number and Clock
  • CD Number and Track Number

Note: The IDC A 09 changer is only compatible with the Kingston MP47 if it has not been previously connected to a 2002 or older Blaupunkt receiver. A code is set inside the IDC A 09 when it is connected to the older radio, making the changer incompatible with 2003 and newer receivers. The changer would need to be sent back to the manufacturer to reset the code in order to make it compatible again.

Excellent entry-level unit with just enough features.

Written By Rob, Arizona on Tuesday, January 20, 2009

For an entry level Blaupunkt, this unit is excellent.

It is not perfect, but hey, it's NOT a high-dolar unit...and it trounces the other comprable units I have used.

It has the features we wanted: USB input, with the ability to read a large jump drive and CDR/W and MP3 cd capability. We were hesitant about the rear-located USB port, but he unit comes with a nice PC-quality USB cable for your drive to dock with. I routed mine to a cubby in the dash, so the USB drive is out of sight and not in the way.

The menu is not the easiest to use, but it is not hard either. It has the needed functions and several I wil likely never use. The face color is changable, but the buttons are red lit.

The remote is teeny. I have large hands and using it is fairly easy, although it is easy to turn it upside down and not notice. Being so small, it is also quite easy to loose...but it has a remote and it works well.

We really like the volume feature where you can set the initial volume when you turn the unit on: this way, if I'm rockin' out when I park, it does not blast you when you turn it back on. The Mute level is also selectable! Now, I can hit mute if one of the kids says something and the music just gets quieter, not totally muted. Great feature.

I love this stereo, in theory.

Written By Bryan, Bloomington, IL on Thursday, August 21, 2008

A great stereo when it is working. I enjoy the ability to play mp3s from CDs or from a thumb drive. I ran the USB cable out of the back into the glove compartment of my Miata, so I can just leave the thumb drive plugged in and locked inside glove box. The display has better quality lettering than most stereos, with a wide choice of bright background colors.

Unfortunately, the connection between the faceplate and the stereo has been flaky. Sometimes the buttons on the face won't work or the display won't update. Applying rubbing alcohol to clean the connection seems to help, but only temporarily.

When playing songs on a thumb drive, they are played in the order in which they are copied to the drive rather than alphabetically. This is very annoying. I actually wrote a script on my computer to copy the files over properly. Also, the names of longer song titles get cut off even though there is a scrolling display.

Overall, I'd really like to be able to recommend this stereo, but the bad connection to the faceplate was a big disappointment. I don't know if others will have that issue or not.

LOOKS GREAT BUT A LOT OF PROBLEMS

Written By , Pembroke Pines, FL on Friday, May 30, 2008

I had a really hard time finding a radio I liked after the one that came in my car went out. I finally found this one and I thought it was perfect. Well, turns out I was wrong. As soon as the unit was installed I noticed that the clock would not change out of 24-hr mode, which is apparently a problem with almost every radio of this model. But I decided to just deal with the clock issue and just kept the radio in my car. Well after about 6 months the screen started to flash a different color when I pressed a preset button. So after this started my husband called cruthfield, which transfered him to Blaupunkt and they gave us the address to a repair facility. We sent to the repair facility, which we had to pay for, and when we got it back everything worked. Then a couple weeks later the screen started to flash again when you hit the preset button and the volume knob didn't work sometimes. We yet again called crutchfield who told us they would give us a new one. Well I got the new one yesturday and guess what, same clock problem.

The people at crutchfield told us we could choose a different radio and just apply the credit but I don't like any of the other ones. So now I either send this one out to be fixed and hope it doesn't break in the next month (my warranty will then be expired) or buy a radio I don't like.

I don't think I would recommend this headunit and if you can't find another one that you like just keep looking

just okay with some annoying quirks

Written By Shelby, Springfield, IL on Monday, February 18, 2008

The player is just okay. Several things that annoy me. First, the USB is at the rear of the player, which I didn't realize until after I purchased the unit. I probably could have fished the adapter out the back and up front to get it to work, but it was too much of a hastle. I should've paid more attention to this before I bought it. Second, the CD player often doesn't recognize the CD. This usually happens when there is a CD in the player, I turn off the vehicle, then turn it back on. It doesn't happen all the time, but periodically. Third, for some reason, the player doesn't show a clock when I use the auxillary front input. I use that all the time with my satellite radio. Fourth, when the front panel is down, if I don't put a CD in quickly or take out a CD quickly, the player doesn't allow me to do either, it's like the power is off to the load/eject function. All-in-all, I wouldn't recommend this or purchase another Blaupunkt based on this experience.

The little things

Written By chris, Richmond, VA on Wednesday, December 12, 2007

I got this radio mid November and was quite pleased to begin with. Then I actually began to set it up and noticed it would not allow me to switch out of 24hr time, also the clock would not update at all while using the usb capability resulting in an increasingly wrong time the longer the song. I called crutchfield about this issue and found out it is an issue with many if not all of the radios of this model. I dont undestand how such a simple yet annoying error was even allowed to leave the factory. Besides this glitch I like the radio and all the features and I cant see puting an asian made radio in my porsche, all the while wondering how germany can get their cars right but not a simple clock.
Usb works great for me using a 4gig stick so I ususally just set it to mix and it runs through my library. The sound is good even though it is a pain navigating the menu to make tweaks.

So I give it a 3/5

Great product!

Written By Bruce, Edmond, OK on Monday, October 15, 2007

I installed this unit in my 2004 Dodge Ram quad cab with no problems. The installation took about 2 hours, but only because I opted to solder and sleeve all the connections. The included wiring harness let me do all the soldering at my workbench, and made the actual installation in the truck a snap. Crutchfield's instructions were accurate and detailed, which made the installation very easy.

The unit performs well, and the controls are easy to work with while driving. The combination of USB, MP3 CD, and front panel aux input give me all the flexibility I could want. My biggest wish is for a way to mount the USB port on the dash, since the USB connection is on the back of the unit. At 18 watts RMS per channel the sound is a little thin, but an upgrade from the factory speakers and an amp addition are coming soon, so it shouldn't be a problem for long.

Very Problematic

Written By JWG, New Iberia, LA on Thursday, October 11, 2007

I purchased and installed this unit along with the BT adapter back in August. I decided on the MP47 because of its USB adapter and felt safe because it was a Blaupunkt. Boy was I wrong! I purchased a 80GB USB HDD so I could take my entire music collection on the road with me. This worked out well for about a week when it suddenly stopped recognizing the drive as a Mass Storage Device and started seeing it as a CD changer.

If you're a ZUNE owner forget about plugging it into the USB port (although this is more of a ZUNE problem, it was another reason I bought it.) In order to play my ZUNE I've got to use the front auxiliary port which produces so much alternator whine that it's not worth using (good ground and very good filters installed). The CD player shows a reading error on virtually every store bought CD I've tried playing, and whenever I'm talking on the phone using the BT adapter, I'm told that I sound like I'm in a hole, which is where my MP 47 will most likely end up.

From reading the other reviews though it seems as if I got the lemon. There is one positive thing I can say about the MP47 and that is that the FM radio works exceptionally well.

Awesome Radio! USB is the best!

Written By Brittany, Colorado on Friday, September 14, 2007

I installed my MP47 about 2 weeks ago, and I love it. It is gorgeous, and the USB connection is my favorite feature. It was pretty easy to install (and I'd never done it before). The Crutchfield tech support was really helpful, because the harness was wired incorrectly, so that the radio stayed on, even when the car was off and the key was removed from ignition (the 12V switched had to be connected to the 12 V constant wire).

You should know that the USB connector is on the back of the radio- I thought it might be on the front of the head unit. But, there is a connector that you can run to some conveniently accessible location in your car. The USB connection is great- it is so nice to have a way to carry lots of music without risking theft of an expensive ipod. One note, the Crutchfield site said that I would have to cut the support bracket in the back of my car (2000 VW Passat) to make room for this radio, but I did not have to do this to make it fit.

I really love the auxillary input, the USB and having a working cd player again! The detachable face is nice too.

Looks great, sounds good, lacks MP3 refinement

Written By Hefty, Dallas, TX on Monday, August 13, 2007

Car: 2003 Nissan 350z - Non Bose w/navigation

The mounting kit that came from Crutchfield didnt work with the Nissan ISO mounting brackets. I couldnt find a mounting position on the Blaupunkt MP47 that allowed the holes on the factory mounting bracket to line up with the Crutchfield install kit. I used the DIN install bracket which looked good though interferes with the detachable faceplate.

The Blaupunkt MP47 does a good job of getting the most out of the terrible factory speakers. The unit plays data CD's with MP3 files no problem however audio CD's tend to skip.

The Blaupunkt MP47 is a perfect match for the 350z in terms of interior color. The 350z has an orange backlit gauges and the Blaupunkt MP47's vibrant display can match the color exactly. The gray, black, and polished chrome of the Blaupunkt MP47 picks up the rest of the interior wonderfully. It looks so good in fact that I am willing to put up with the other shortcomings.

My biggest complaint is the USB interface. I loaded a Traveldrive to find that the Blaupunkt MP47 will go silent after several played songs. Toggling the input source just gets stuck at 'Reading' and hangs. To resolve one has to detach the face plate. Wait for the device to power down and then snap the faceplate back in, power it back on, and reinsert your devices/discs. This a common issue with Blaupunkt head units and needs a firmware upgrade to fix the issue. Crutchfield needs to work with Blaupunkt to resolve this firmware issue with older devices.

I had an Alpine that worked wonderfully with any MP3 format and far superior file/directory browsing then the B

Great Deal

Written By RAGMAN, Elsmere, Ky on Wednesday, August 01, 2007

I waited months for this to hit the U.S. finally......
its been installed now for almost a week and I love it. I chose the MP47 for is looks and clean design. I dont care for alot of buttons.. not only is it simple to use and setup but the read time on the cd's and mp3's off of a jumpdrive are very quick. scanning thru 2GB's of songs to get to one ya want to hear can be a bit tedious. the display is very clean and clear and the colors to choose from are pretty sweet. there are plenty of options as far as adjustments to fine tune the unit so it sounds good with whatever speakers or subs you may have.. I highly recommend getting one.. and do it soon.
