Overview

Our take on the Blaupunkt Blue Magic CX 160

Nothing up the sleeve here! Blaupunkt's Blue Magic CX 160 component speakers offer high-end construction and materials at an affordable price. The woofer's rigid injected polypropylene (IPP) cone works with its rubber surround to deliver extended excursion for stronger mids and lows. You can install each adjustable 1" PEI tweeter up closer to your listening position, so you get the full effect of the vibrant highs in your music. With a little work, these components will give you a big jump in sound quality over your tired factory speakers.

The CX 160's design includes more ventilation to draw heat away from the voice coil on the woofer, so it'll handle handle higher power from an amp while still being efficient enough to work with a car stereo. The in-line crossovers ensure smooth imaging, so you enjoy the full depth of your music. You can flush- or surface-mount the tweeters, so you can create the best possible soundstage and still keep the installation neat.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Slight modification of door opening, creative attachment to factory tweeter brackets was necessary. If you have no tweeters currently the installation would be easier. Great sound!

Slight modification of door opening, creative attachment to factory tweeter brackets was necessary. If you have no tweeters currently the installation would be easier. Great sound!

Pros: Great bass, clear highs. Clean sound.

Cons: Will show up bad head unit noise, amp distortion. Not a con, just an accurate pair of drivers.

Speakers sound worse then the speakers I replaced, wish I had spent more for a better speaker!

Pros:

Cons: Huge pain to install, old speakers were larger so had to fabricate a housing for these smaller speakers.

Not too bad at all

A rather economical component speaker system. Did the installation at home, paired with Blaupunkt New Jersey 220 head unit and EMA 455 amplifier. These come with tweeters with crossovers wired up, all ready to install. I recommend using an amp with these. A head unit alone will not drive them nearly hard enough. The sound that comes out of these is precise, detailed and very, very bright with a flat response. Almost uncomfortable to listen to, like studio monitors. The low-mids don't really come through, though. And the bass is a little bit muddy and indistinct. For the price, these are not that bad. However, it depends on what kind of music you're into. For rock, these are great. For EDM or rap, not so great. They've got no boom. On the other hand, if you paired them up with a nice, responsive subwoofer (like an 8 or 10 inch), you might recover some of those low-mids for a well-rounded sound.

Pros: -Cheap -Detailed Highs -Compact and easy to install

Cons: -Harsh and piercing treble may not be to some people's tastes -Lacking in Lower-Mids/Mid-Bass -Not much Bass -Not very loud overall

Great value for the money

Good speakers for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound for the price and size. The bass is pretty good for the size. I have purchased products from Crutchfield before and the price, accessories, and the tech support can't be beat. Let's face it, those who want deep bass will have to get a 10-12 inch woofer and subwoofer. I had to tear apart the stock tweeter and modify it to mount the Blaupunkt tweeter in it so that it would sit cleanly like the stock one. Worked out great!

Pros: The accessories that Crutchfield supplies made the install quick and easy.

Cons: The speaker bracket for the 6 1/2 needed a little customizing, but works great!

Much better than stock JBL speakers!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These replaced the stock JBL premium speakers in my Sequoia. I am still using the stiock head unit and JBL amp and these 3 ohm speakers sound great! The rear speakers are still stock and there is not a significant volume difference them and the Blue Magic.

Pros: Better sound sound than factory installed speakers.

Cons:

OK speakers for an OK speaker price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a lot budget for stereo equipment in my Miata (since it's a 'vert and who spends a lot of money on an open-top car's stereo?) so I went with these Blaupunkt to match the similarly branded head unit. My car had spots for tweeters at the top of the doors, so I wanted a component system for under $100 and this was it. Installation was pretty easy, no thanks to my car's previous owner and they hack job they did on the car's speaker mounting points. Now that they're in...well, they're there. I'm not even sure the sound quality is all that much improved over stock. Bass is so-so and some of the highs sound piercing to my ears at higher volumes.

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Sound really isn't particularly good when powered directly from a head unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The components sound great in my 99 Tahoe, But I think Blaupunkt could have added a few small brackets for the tweeters I was able to install them in the same mounting locations were the old one's were WITHOUT any Modification's they fit between the 2 tabs just right I used duct tape to hold them from moving and duct tape to hold crossovers to the door panel ..I hate modifying things when I don't have too.

Pros: great sound ,easy to install

Cons:

Features

Size Note: Although the woofer is classified as a 6-1/2, the cutout required to mount it is larger than most other 6-1/2s; please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Woofer Magnet Cover: Each woofer has a rubber cover over the magnet. This cover is removable, useful when installing the speaker in tight mounting applications.

Note: The speaker measurements in "Features and Specs" were taken with the rubber cover removed; including the cover, the woofer's dimensions are:

  • Mounting Depth: 2.293"
  • Magnet Diameter: 3.38"

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeter can be flush mounted, surface mounted, or surface mounted at an angle using the included adapters. The tweeter comes mounted in the flush mount housing, the angled surface mount housing is included, and combining the top of the angled housing and the bottom of the flush housing creates the standard surface mount housing. The angled housing surface mounts the tweeter at approximately 45°. Once the tweeter is mounted in any of the housings, it can be angled to optimize imaging.
