A classic beauty

Blaupunkt'sToronto 420 BT CD receiver really catches the eye with its classic lines and traditional two-knob layout. But its old school looks won't keep you in the dark when you're driving — the bright white 15-digit scrolling display keeps you in the loop on song and system information, while the simple controls allow you to access an extensive list of features. And beneath the striking exterior, you'll find a modern car stereo that's all about performance.

Bluetooth makes drive time better

Once you've got Bluetooth in your car, it's hard to imagine how you managed without it. With the Toronto, you can answer calls with the touch of a button, and speak as if your caller were sitting next to you. The front panel features a built-in microphone, but you can purchase Blaupunkt's optional external microphone for optimal performance in convertibles or other noisy vehicles. Plus, you'll get wireless audio streaming from your Bluetooth devices too — eliminating the need to plug in your devices when you get in the car.

More ways to enjoy your music

The Toronto features both front and rear USB inputs, giving you plenty of options for hooking up an iPhone®, iPod®, or thumb drive. You can control your playlists and song selection from the receiver when your iPhone/iPod is connected, so you won't have to pick up your device to find your favorite tunes. Of course, you can play your favorite CDs, including discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files. The front-panel auxiliary input accommodates most other audio sources, while an SDHC card slot behind the face gives you one more option for bringing your music along.

Strong sound

The Toronto includes a powerful amp that delivers 22 watts per channel to your speakers, complemented by a 3-band equalizer that'll shape the sound to match your car and your style. A full set of preamp outputs with subwoofer level controls make it easier to expand and control your system.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

This is an outstanding 21st century radio/CD/UBS/AUX deck which meets my expectations and needs for as long as I will own this car. The appearance is straightforward and fitting for my Mercedes SL320, the radio reception is at least as good as the factory Alpine(vintage 1995) which it replaces. The instruction book is easy to follow. The double knob format and button functions are very easy to learn and use. The Bluetooth connections are very simple for either older BT-enabled flip-phones or the i-phone generation. What makes this unit great are the sound quality and the front/back features, including 2 UBS connections, AUX connection, SD chip slot behind the removable cover, and easy Bluetooth phone answering and hang-up. With four digital/AUX inputs, there is really no need for the single-CD slot in the front. I should note the adapters for the R-129 series Mercedes: They match-up with the stock Bose amp harness, radio antenna, and the back of the Blaupunkt. If you actually count the wires going into and out of the adapter, you will note that some do not have a corresponding lead to the Bose amp. The ignition wire and several input wires to the amp are examples. The result is that the Blaupunkt will turn on without the ignition ON. This is a change from stock. Also, the adapter only has four wires going out to the amp, in an eight wire system, you lose the fader control to the rear speakers. Both VOL and BAL work fine. All in all, a great radio.

Pros: Appearance, features, inputs, ease of installation, quality, versatility.

Cons: Loss of fader control for R129 chassis Mercedes types.

This stereo was easy to install. It is very easy to use, and sounds great. Blaupunkt does not skimp on quality. I especially like the simple layout of the controls. No tiny mystery buttons, just great sound with all the bells and whistles hidden inside! Very nice.

Pros: Great sound, easy to use, looks great.

Cons: The menu selecting knob is a little too sensitive, and can be tricky to use while driving.

Years ago I put a Blaupunkt St Louis in my M roadster. Love that radio, love the SD card. A few years later I needed a radio for the wife's Z3, and found the Blaupunkts "unavailable", and was steered to a Kenwood somethingorother. I should have known better as I was replacing a fairly new Kenwood installed by the previous owner. The Kenwood review will be posted separately. Last year I bought yet another Z3M and needed a radio. I ended up choosing the Toronto here, and absolutely love it. You can pick nits with anything, but this radio matches my needs. Load an SDHC card with a few thousand MP3s, hit random, done. When the wife's Kenwood died this weekend (it had been dropping channels for a year), I asked what features she would like in the replacement. "One exactly like yours" was the answer. Done.

Pros: SDHC slot!! Good bluetooth German antenna connector with adapter to american (then Crutchfield gives an american-german) German ergonomics

Cons: German ergonomics and menuing layout

I love the looks of this radio. I have an older Jeep and didn't want something that looks like a spaceship in my dash. The radio even resembles the iconic round headlight look of the Jeep wrangler. That unfortunately is where my praises end for this radio. The first one, that I received, had the answer and hang up buttons swapped on the face. I literally had to push the "hang up" button to answer and the "answer" button to hang up. Also the clock lost just under 1 minute per day, which almost made me late for work one morning before I realized it. Terrible quality control on Blaupunkt's part. Crutchfield was absolutely awesome when it came to replacing it with a new one. I love the looks so I tried again with the exact model. The replacement has all the buttons in the correct place, but still loses time at the same rate as the first one. I really need an accurate clock so that one is going back again. I'm going to try it a 3rd time because I love the looks and apparently I'm not that smart. Crutchfield was, by the way, wonderfully accommodating once again.

Some other issues that I noticed was that it is somewhat cumbersome to operate while driving, long delay before it reacts to a button push, integrated mic is horrible, characters are hard to see on the display, not enough radio presets, after using BT streaming it resets to AM so you have to toggle source a bunch of times to get to FM, and autoscan on the right nob is exasperating(turn it to manual and it works fine)

    Pros: Looks awsome

Cons: Horrible quality control.(Shame on you Blaupunkt!) Clock doesn't keep time. Hard to operate. Integrated mic is useless. Display is hard to see. A bevy of strange annoying quirks. Tuner isn't very strong. Remote needs perfect line of sight to work.

If you are all about sound quality and great Bluetooth connectivity without all the adware like XM or Sirius ready and blah blah blah this head unit perfect and the looks are five star to me .

Pros: In my opinion this head unit has the best sound quality over any head unit I've ever owned and I am talking pioneer alpine and Sony put together. The head unit itself does not have any badges such as Dolby BBE because it simply does not need them . The magic starts when you press play ! ( =

Cons: Audio settings should've been the first on the menu but you'll rarely have to use them So its nothing really worth crying about .

Purchased this unit because it had what I wanted, especially knobs instead of rocker controls. The installation was easy, the sound quality is good and it looks "at home" in my 1993 VW bus (EuroVan.)

Pros: Knob controls, good sound, pleany of features.

Cons: Faceplate feels a bit flimsy.

This is just as much a review for Crutchfield as it is for the head unit. The head unit is great. It was for my son's truck. Everything worked as advertised. But the real kudos go to Crutchfield. All the harnesses and adapters worked perfectly. The head unit and speakers went in flawlessly.

Pros: Everything worked as stated . Great functionality for the price. The simple controls make for a clean look but should not be confused with a simple no frills unit.

Cons: had a few extra wires and the Manuel didn't provide any guidance on what to do with those. So I taped them up so nothing shorted out and hoped for the best. All tuned out wellbut it would have been nice to have some guidance.

I went with Blaupunkt mostly because it looks elegant and simple, and matched the interior to my 2004 VW GTI. I was not overly concerned with audio quality, as I was using the stock amp and speakers, so I figured any aftermarket HU would sound about the same. All I wanted was to play CDs, make and receive calls via bluetooth, and utilize Cortana voice commands for my Nokia smart phone. The Blaupunkt looks great, and is easy to use. Unfortunately, the main features I wanted, CD and bluetooth, don't work all that well. The CD player is very sensitive to scratched CDs, and is finicky with burned disks, playing some, and not reading others. Also, it gets confused when you answer a phone call while listing to a CD: after the call ends, the disk sometimes reverts back to track 1, but still displays the track and time-stamp of where you were listening when you answered the phone. Not the worst thing ever, but annoying. The bluetooth quality is good on my end, but the person on the other end always says that I sound far away, even with the external microphone mounted close to my face. Voice commands for the phone work, but not well, probably because the microphone is not picking up clearly.

Pros: Looks fantastic. Not chintzy like most other receivers. Intuitive user interface.

Cons: Bluetooth quality is sub-par. Even with the external microphone mounted high on the A pillar. CD-player is very sensitive to scratched disks.

Very impressed with this product. I bought it for the two knob setup as I don't need a miniature disco on my dashboard. There are way more features than the limited number of buttons would indicate which is a good thing. You can customize it in the driveway and then it's very functional and easy to use driving down the road. They definitely went cheap on the display though. While I appreciate the simplicity of the display and the lack of a billion flashing lights, I do wish they had gone with a little more modern display for ease of use, especially in direct sunlight. I also appreciate that it goes completely dark when off except for a blue halo around the power switch as I like my car interior to not blind me at night.

Pros: Easy to use, good sound, classic look doesn't make my car look like some punk kid wanted to make a disco out of it.

Cons: Just dreaming here, but it would be great if I could set up the menu features from my laptop to save all the sub, sub, sub, sub menus for things like knob sensitivity and so forth.

If you want simple and basic that still has lots of options, then this radio is great. The sound quality is not what I expected from the renowned Blaupunkt brand but it wasn't horrible either. It has basic treble and bass settings or preset EQ curves which makes the sound settings limited in my opinion. I also had a difficult time pairing my phone with the radio so have nothing to say about that. The look is very refined and appealing though and makes anything you want to do very readily available and easy to navigate to. Not a bad buy but there are others out there with fewer options but better sound. What's in your car?

Pros: Simple design making for easy navigation of settings and options

Cons: limited sound options and quality

I'm happy with this unit, find that the blue tooth works great, good clean sound out of the new speakers that I put in with the unit. Had to remove the support bracket from the vehicles original stereo but then it has more than enough room in the dash to fit. Now realize this unit is in a 86 VW Vanagon and has to compete with the all the car's noises at highway speeds and I feel that it does a fine job. bought the remote mic and have not had any complaints on play back. Love the sd card have tons of music loaded so I never have to dig for cd's, in fact would be happy without that feature. I have no issue with the am/fm reception I find is is perfect for my use. And my favorite thing is the look, clean not fussy no flashy disco lights to disturb me when I'm driving, again look at the unit that it is in, my Vanagon is very German and has no fuss at all, very utilitarian.

Pros: clean looking Euro style 2 usb ports sd slot, who needs any other music Blaupunk android app to play the music from my phone or tablet 60 min of play time with an auto shut off bluetooth

Cons: My only complaint is digging through the menus to get to stuff/folders some thing I dislike on every stereo that had in-depth menues

Without a doubt the absolute best looking unit single DIN unit on the market, however I bought it to use as an audio device. I really tried to live with it but difficult functionality forces me to return it.

Pros: 1. Display visible in full daylight 2. Nice knob & button illumination 3. Solid build quality 4. Plays for 1 hour without turning key to ACC

Cons: 1. High pitched whistling sound during playback from devices plugged into USB port but not through AUX port 2. Requires 2 hands to hold open the rubber USB cover and plug in cable 3. Receives 5 FM stations compared to @ 20 from other head units in the same location 4. Knob increments way to sensitive for adjustments while driving

I bought this stereo for 3 reasons: No little buttons, Blue Tooth and Blaupunkt quality. New stereos these days have lots of little buttons. Over time the print wears down as if the print wasn't hard enough to read when new. I like the classic 2 knob design. It makes it easier to scroll thru the options. When changing to the various input options it doesn't change for a few seconds after you've reached the input you want. Blue Tooth is almost a necessity these days for car stereos mainly because of laws requiring "Hands Free" driving but streaming internet radio from a smart phone or playing from an MP3 source is convenient and clear. I have owned several Blaupunkt stereos for the past 30 years. Quality and design are their best features.

Pros: AM/FM, CD, Blue Tooth, Line In and SD Card as input options. Great value for the price. USB and line in ports in front and back. I may add a remote mic later.

Cons: Red LEDs and no options to change color. I would prefer an option for display, very common these days.

I live in and work in Chicago. So I wanted to pick a stereo that was low profile but still packed with goodies. The Blaupunkt seemed like the perfect fit. I chose this model because of the built in bluetooth mic, the usb playback features, the overall look. It seemed like the perfect fit. I was very very excited to get this stereo. I couldn't believe the price either. I like the way it looks, but that is about where it stops. -The built in bluetooth mic is terrible, I constantly cuts out and even when i am stopped people cant hear me. Its about 12" away from my face. So I can't enjoy that feature. -The Bluetooth playback is horrible sound quality. -The screen probably annoys me the most. it's an old fashioned screen, but it is impossible to see. If it gets below 60 the screen clouds up from the cold and wont work. The crappy little stick writing can't be read while your changing inputs either., So, if you want to use an input you have to press the button , wait a few seconds, press it again, Which is incredibly dangerous while driving and heaven forbid you go past the input you wanted you have to round robin through the entire thing again, -The usb playback drive doesn't work at all. 6 different flash drives, multiple different file formats, just doesnt work. I followed all the instructions. No dice. -Plug in your iPod. that wont work either. -It doesn't play burned cd's.

I trusted the Crutchfield team, but they got this one wrong. You get what you pay for.

Pros: Low profile. blends in. Looks cool

Cons: Doesn't do half things it says, when it does it does them poorly.

Love the look of the radio. I'll never understand why more companies don't go for more subtlety. That said, I must have a defective unit. I can't get decent sound on any station. It actually 'waves' in and out. Bluetooth for music sound is terrible. I get an audible hiss. Connecting via USB doesn't even work right. It plays fine for a while, then cuts out and reconnects. Very frustrating. I'll probably get another one though. It's really the only unit I want in my car.

    Pros: The looks.

    Cons: Everything else.

I purchased this unit for it's low profile looks as it's installed in a 96 Miata. It certainly fits that bill and looks stock. I also wanted something simple. I previously purchased a Kenwood head unit, also from Crutchfield that although it sounds great is just too busy and complicated. Maybe I'm just getting too old.

The unit was simiple to install and does everything I need it to. I'm only using it to power the head rest speakers for which it does a great job. I've found it pretty easy to use though I really only listen to the radio and my MP3 player which easily plugs into the AUX jack in the front. I love the way it looks stock and doesn't attract attention.

It is tough to see during the day but just about every unit is when you're driving a convertible. The only other complaint I have is that often when you turn up the volume the level doesn't always go up. Almost like the volume knob has a striped gear. You turn it up but the volume numbers on the display don't go up so you have to keep turning it up until the numbers move. Odd.

All and all a good unit at a good price with simple controls that I would recommend to anyone.

Pros: Stock looking Not flashy Easy to install and operate

    Cons: Volume control knob

    Not recommended.

I wanted a conservative-looking radio that did not look like a carnival ride at night, so I got this Blaupunkt. It is cool looking, hence the 5 star Coolness Factor rating. Seems to be built well. However, I do not recommended this radio for the following reasons--- it is difficult to operate while driving, the menus are confusing, the sound quality is not good for analog music (old school rock like The Who or Rush etc), but does sound OK if you listen to electronic music of all sorts (NIN, electronic instrumental stuff, dance stuff, etc), and you can't use the iPod itself to control the music (you have to use the head unit which is as already stated difficult to use). One of the biggest issues I had was the display-- at its brightest setting it was difficult to see. My eyes are fine. Not good when driving on a sunny day in the country and trying to fumble with the controls. I returned it for an Alpine UTE-52 BT, which BTW has a fantastic 24 bit Digital-Analog converter. Much easier to use and sounds great with all types of music. If the sound quality was as great as the Alpine, I would have kept the radio. I know what music is supposed to sound like in a car, as I have had over 15 cars in my time and put radios in all of them. Im also a classically-trained pianist and a music lover. I like the Blaupunkt brand, but it seems they have left behind their once well-respected reputation of making great-sounding radios from 25 years ago. Get an Alpine and thank me later.

Pros: Nice looking radio with a conservative vibe good for electronic music.

Cons: Sound quality is poor overall and struggles with many genres of music (coloring the music with harsh upper frequencies on older music), display is dim, and the radio is difficult to operate, especially while driving.

Installed as the third radio in a 1983 Porsche 944. The original Blaupunkt Monterey was pulled and replaced with a Pioneer piece of crap. Took my time and installed the Toronto in as tidy a fashion as I think the factory would. The install instructions were great as well as the lead identification. The unit looks like it belongs in the car, may spray the bezel flat black.

Pros: Very good overall build quality, decent sound quality. Bluetooth phone setup and subsequent operation are excellent.

Cons: The knobs are too small and need to be knurled. The audio adjustments are limited and not intuitive.

Great looking head unit. Looks the least aftermarket of them all. Unfortunately I returned it due to the frustrating way it does not allow you to see your folders properly when using a memory stick.

Pros: Blaupunkt design, great build quality, comes with a case.

Cons: Not HD radio, don't expect to search for your music under artist, then album. It lumps them all together and you have to search through every album track until you get what you want. This I consider a major fail and Crutchfield took it back without any bother. I upgraded to a Kenwood and am very pleased.

Wanting hands free calling, as well as newer media selections, I purchased this unit to replace an older Blaupunkt Toronto RDM-126 in my E30 Baur TC. Upon unpacking, it was evident the newer 420BT was not built to the same standards as the earlier German made unit. The controls, particularly the DIS button, and the cover for the front mount USB port-felt cheap. The separate rotary encoders for volume and track selection are nice, but again, lack the quality feel of the directional buttons on the older Toronto. Adding to my negative impression- the bezel surrounding the push buttons clearly shows fingerprints. But, by far- the worst thing I encountered with this receiver was (after waiting over a month on back order) the first one I received was defective- supplying uninterrupted power to the antenna motor as soon as the battery was connected. To their credit, Crutchfield showed outstanding no-hassle customer service and shipped out a new bench tested replacement within a week. The second Toronto works as advertised. I really no longer need a CD, and could care less about AM radio, so I won't comment on them. The other signal sources- SD card, FM, Bluetooth and USB/front/rear inputs work well (other than what I've listed under "CONS"). Tested the unit with a 32 gig SDHC card and it works as advertised.

Pros: Excellent overall sound quality and uncluttered panel layout. FM tuner is outstanding: sensitivity, selectivity, signal/noise and frequency response are first rate (just wish they had included HD-FM). Phone calls made from this unit are clear on both ends, (even with the top down) using the external mic mounted top center of steering column.

Cons: Cumbersome iphone interface. The less expensive JVC media players I have in my other cars can directly access SIRI by pressing and holding the "call" button- allowing song, navigation or caller selection by voice command ("She" can even read my email aloud). The Blau does not support this.Track names are also not displayed via Bluetooth.

Great stereo for the money, good clean sound and the Bluetooth is great. Makes phone calls while driving a breeze and I can always listen to my music on my phone.

Pros: Great sound, resonable price, and it has many features that make it stand out above other stereos.

Cons: When you restart your truck you have to reselect the Bluetooth setting on the head unit. The stereo is very well made, although in my own opinion it feels like the buttons are weak, that may be just me though.

I am struggling to get the sound to be good in a Mustang GT with subwoofer. The X-bass setting is buggy. If you tough this setting, the bass goes crazy and the only way to stop it is to change some other setting, unrelated.

The "next-track" knob is very painful to use. It is like cracking a safe while driving if you want to change a track. It takes a tiny turn to change tracks, but sometimes it clicks but doesn't register. Furthermore, the track changing has a 2-3 second delay so you turn it slightly, wait, does it change, nope, retry....keep your eyes on the road. The other annoying thing is that you can listen to Bluetooth audio from an iPhone and then when you come back to the care after leaving, it doesn't remember this. It puts it to AM radio, then connects, then you have to change the source. Why is the default from BT going back to AM radio? At least go back to FM. I also have not been able to get it to work via USB to my iPhone 4. Bluetooth is all I have. Maybe it doesn't support this, but for some reason I thought it did. The screen is also dim and not easy to see.

Regarding the sound quality, if you get the EQ setup, then go and change the Bass outside the EQ, BAM you lose all the EQ settings. If they are exclusive of each other, then they should be arranged in the UI better so that you pick which mode you want, then set it up that way and only that way.

Pros: It's built nice, and looks nice and even sounds pretty good (not great).

Cons: The sound is probably good, but the UI makes it hard to work it. The UI is not that good and very hard to use. The remote makes up for this, but I wish the "right know" was a bit more usable.

Overall the feature list and product quality are very good to excellent. I would highly recommend this unit to others. It is superior to most any other system on the market today.

Pros: Bluetooth features work very well. The front and rear USB connections are convenient and well placed. Scan and seek functions are handy when traveling.

Cons: There are a lot of features to learn. Not all of the cool features are apparent from the Spartan appearance of the front panel. Some of the wired connections and their functions are not well explained in the manual

I chose the Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT initially because of it's appearance. I wanted a stereo other than the seemingly cheap, run-of-the-mill stereo that everyone else probably has. The Toronto 420 is simple and elegant and fits beautifully flush in my dash. it looks like it came with the car originally, only better. To my surprise, an SD card is inserted behind the face plate leaving me hours of content at the push of a few buttons. No need for CDs or external cords and such. My only complaint with this unit is that i didn't know about it sooner.

Very well built, great sound quality using the Bluetooth streaming. The looks of the stereo are why I decided to buy it. I wanted to find something that didn't stick out and this was the stereo that gave me that. It looks factory installed. For the money I do not think you can find a better system. I have the external microphone and it works well enough people can hear me when I have my convertible top down at 70 mph

    Pros: Looks, features, and price

Cons: The display can be hard to read in the day time but I have a convertible so I expected that to be an issue. Also the amount of AV wires out of the back of the system make it a little hard to get it to fit in my single DIN unit.

My wife took over my car & with her tech challenged abilities managed to put my awesome head unit all out of wack. Couldn't work it at all so the search was on for a much simpler unit and this one did it. An hour with the manual and she had all her stations set up, phone book transferred and knew where the power button was! Sound is above average, small EQ, and basic settings with gain control for the sub. A fine (excuse any offense) chick's unit.

Would highly recommend this unit. Works great in my classic Porsche 911. Doesn't look overling "blingy" - which I find annoying. Go Blaupunkt!"

Pros: Packed with features. Striking design. Simple to use. Like the remote. Like the microphone option. Like the USB extension cable - which does throw enough power to charge my iPhone. Love that you can play for 1 hour AFTER key removed from ignition. Really simple pairing with iPhone.

Cons: Unfortunately - when you shut off the ignition the audio source will NOT stay on bluetooth. Example, if you are streaming music from your mobile phone, then pop into seven eleven for a slushie, when you get back to your car the music source will now default start on a radio band. You will then have to click on source to get back to streaming as source. Not horrible, but not too fun either.

This unit was installed into a 30 year old car for my son, and the car was instantly 20 years newer. We incorporated the head unit, four new speakers, and a remote microphone so that the phone feature is operational. The sound is great, the bluetooth is flawless, and the microphone sounds better than the phone itself. Such a good unit, I am going to by a second one for our RV.

Pros: Works as advertised. Easy installation with Crutchfield's supplied instructions and help line

I have been looking to replace the stereo in my Vanagon Westfalia Camper to improve the sound quality and add bluetooth. I wanted to stick with a German name, given the nature of this vehicle and its almost cult following. I found this ti be an really good unit for the price, loaded with useful features and not too flashy as to draw attention or look too out of place. This VW, now 25 years old is not a quiet vehicle, so I can't comment of the nuance it communicates. I do have a separate amplifier and decent speakers, both Blaupunkt, it does all that I ask for for a very reasonable price. BTW Crutchfield suggests that this unit will not fit my vehicle, but it fits perfectly.

Pros: Good value, good looks, great features, easy install.

Cons: Even with the Blaupunkt external mic, the cellphone bluetooth quality is only fair, but to be honest the VW Vanagon might be most of the problem. I do wish the display screen was a bit bigger, it is hard to read at least in this application.

I gained many of modern day features with thie installation of this unit in my 10 years old English-built SUV. The installation was straight forward with the tools and instructions provided from Crutchfield. I love the simple two-knob design. It goes with the rest of the interior design. The buttons lit up in red. I was expect them to be white based on the pictures. Bright red and neon blue was just a tad too disco for my taste. I was disappointed that It didn't work with the aftermarket steering wheel control adapter. The front USB port was powerful enough to charge a phone or an iPad. It frees up the cigarette lighter for something else.

Pros: Powerful and clear sound, enough to be heard on the highway in a poorly insulated SUV Intuitive interface. Loaded with features (bluetooth for telephone and music, USB input (2), SD card input, iPod control)

Cons: Incompatible with aftermarket SWI adapter. Unable to control CD changer. Flimsy bezel surround.

I was a long time without a working radio in a very much dated car. Now I'm very happy with the new Blaupunkt, and with the installation extras that only Crutchfield had. Cellphones barely existed when I bought the car, but now having the Bluetooth is a great new toy. Now if I can just hold onto my unlimited data plan I can really enjoy this new toy.

Pros: Bluetooth is great for phone calls and for streaming Sirius, pandora, etc

Cons: Radio reception is marginal, but that could be as much the fault of the car as it is of the radio. It creates the old "dead zone" between New York and Philadelphia. This is not an issue if using the cellphone as an audio source.

I bought this unit mainly for the bluetooth which I use with my Nexus 4. The BT works well enough with two minor annoyances: (1) if I'm listening to BT streaming and turn the car off and then return, the receiver changes source input to FM so I have to select the BT streaming again (I think because it takes a few seconds to reconnect to the N4 and it decides BT isn't a valid input in that time) and (2) when I shut off the receiver it takes my phone a few seconds to realize it's off and it keeps playing, so I consistently miss some of my pod. This could be an issue with my N4, but it doesn't do it with my Sony head unit.

    Pros: Clean look.

Cons: The SD Card slot is nice, a good way to have a music collection at the ready.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (2.0+EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile)
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Toronto 420 BT.

Pairing: Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the Blaupunkt CD receiver. You can pair up to 5 Bluetooth-enabled devices, but only one can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ Integrated Mic): The Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT allows for wireless communication between the head unit and your Bluetooth-enabled iPhone, Android smartphone, or other Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. You'll be able to answer incoming calls, as well as dial outgoing calls.

    • Answer/End Incoming Call: When there is an incoming call, the current audio source is muted and a ring tone is played via the loudspeakers of the car sound system. The head unit's display will indicate "INCOMING CALL" and the phone number of the caller. If the phone number is one of your phone book contacts, then the unit will also display the caller's name. "PRIVATE NUMBER" is displayed when there is no caller information transmitted. You can answer the incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls. You'll be able to speak into the head unit's integrated mic on the front-panel (or optional external mic) during your phone conversation, while the other party is heard through your vehicle's speakers.
    • Dialing Outgoing Call: You can manually enter a phone number, up to 20 digits, using the unit's front-panel controls. The head unit also allows you to access your Bluetooth-enabled phone's phone book contacts (up to 960 entries) for easy access. You can even choose to store five phone numbers as presets for speedier dialing. In addition, you can speak a contact's name into the integrated mic for voice dialing. You can also quickly call the last number dialed.

Note: An optional microphone (023TRN420M, sold separately) is available for improved audio quality versus the integrated mic, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT allows you to wirelessly play back stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, or other Bluetooth-enabled devices using a Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP connection. You can control basic playback functions of your music on your Bluetooth-enabled device from the Toronto 420BT's front-panel. Playback functions include Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track.

Note: This unit does not display song/artist information from Bluetooth audio devices, instead it will display "BT STREAM".

    Disc/SD/USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Blaupunkt Toronto 420 BT features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

SD Card Slot: The Toronto 420BT features an SD-card slot located behind its detachable front-panel. The The SD-card slot supports SD and SDHC memory cards with MP3/WMA music files. The unit's face-plate must be detached to insert or eject an SD/SDHC memory card.

Dual USB Ports: The Toronto 420 BT features a front-panel and rear-panel USB (type-A) port; the rear-panel USB port is attached to the chassis by a 6" pigtail.
