Give your music an audiophile makeover

Headphones are becoming more about convenience and versatility. But music aficionados are seldom willing to sacrifice sound quality for portability and features. Denon has developed the Music Maniac line of headphones for discerning audiophiles who aren't afraid of more options than a standard 1/4" plug. The AH-D600 delivers well-balanced, transparent sound to reveal the hidden nuances in your music for a transcendent listening experience at home or away.

Precision-tuned to a flat EQ, the AH-D600 uses Denon's proprietary Free Edge Nano Fiber drivers to replicate the sound of high-end loudspeakers in a headphone. That means presenting your recordings as they were meant to be heard, without uncontrolled boomy bass or overly-bright treble coloring the sound.

Make the connection

Great headphones require high-quality connections to deliver accurate sound. The AH-D600 includes a 10-foot oxygen-free cable designed to plug into your receiver or integrated amplifier for enjoyment in your living room or basement. But understanding the increasing mobility of music, Denon has also included a 55-inch cable with in-line remote and microphone for mobile use with an iPod® or iPhone®.

Although over-the-ear headphones are rarely considered portable, these lightweight cans are comfortable enough to take anywhere. The AH-D600's pentagon-shaped memory foam earpads and adjustable leather-covered band provide comfort for hours of listening, at home, at the office, or anywhere in between. And when listening to your mobile device, take advantage of the free Denon Audio app for Apple® and Android™ devices. This app features built-in graphic EQ, seamless music library integration and access to TuneIn® Radio's thousands of worldwide radio station streams.

From the review Denon AH-D600 Music Maniac headphones: Versatility meets comfort

"The most striking feature of the AH-D600 is their level of comfort. I doubt I've ever worn a more comfortable pair of headphones in any category. The memory foam ear pads are super-soft and the headband is nicely padded across the top. The earcups feel secure on my ears without the headband clamping down too hard."

Great headphones. Very dynamic in their range. Good if you listen to a wide variety of music. A little bass heavy for strictly acoustic listening, but bass is clean, tight and strong. A nice DAC will make these amazing for closed cans. Amp can help as well. Not really noise isolation, just the closed design and padding muffles outside noise a bit. Very comfortable though, one of the most comfortable I've worn.

Pros: Sound, comfort, design features

Cons: Needs matching to upstream components

The AHD 600 deserve serious consideration as general purpose headphones as well as use in specialized applications. These phones require at least 30 hours breakin to begin to sound like themselves. With patience, the sound that develops is rich, smooth and exceedingly clear. The phones are sensitive to their source components and will magnify deviations from neutrality, especially in the bass. I found that the best balance was found with a solid state amp and neautral player. While the phones ar promoted as IPhone compatible and sound better than any other headphone I have heard with that device, they are capable of best class performance with high resolution digital files and high quality amplification. While these Denons have prodigious power handling capacity, they are very efficient and will play very loudly with very little power. If you buy an amp for these, think quality, not quantity.

Using a Byston HPA-1 amp with a Meridion 508-24 CD player (very extended response in the bass and treble), I find the Denon sound to be dynamic and detailed with a sense of ease and vibrancy. The bass is spectacular; tight and tuneful with great texture. The midrange warm and liquid with real vibrancy. The treble is sweet and smooth.

While these phones have a reputation for sounding great with rock and urban music, I like them for classical and jazz, especially older analog to digital transriptions which are improved by their warmth and smoothness. I love 'em.

Pros: Sound, Comfort, Build Quality, Value

Cons: Needs careful matching to upstream components.
