  • Reflective Neck Band: The Bluetooth in-ear headphones include a reflector on the neckband to provide added safety for evening workout activities.

Built-in Bluetooth: The Denon AH-W150 Bluetooth in-ear headphones allow you to take hands-free calls or wirelessly listen to music from your compatible Bluetooth-enabled device without having to plug it in. The Denon AH-W150 is Bluetooth version 3.0 certified with a range up to 25'. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone or other mobile device must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles.  These headphones are compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), and AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

  • Hands-Free Communication: The Denon AH-W150 in-ear headphones support Bluetooth hands-free communication (HFP/HSP) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The integrated controls of the AH-W150 can be used to answer an in-coming call or end a call. A ring-tone will be heard through the headphones during an incoming call. The AH-W150's integrated omni-directional microphone lets you carry on your side of the conversation, while listening to the caller's voice through the earphones. You will still need to make outgoing call from your mobile phone's keypad or touchscreen. Once you have dialed the number from your phone, the call will automatically switch to the Sony Bluetooth headphones.

You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps. When receiving a phone call while listening to music, the music audio pauses and the ring-tone is heard through the headphones.

Note: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or other device must be paired with the AH-W150 headphones before hands-free operation. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Denon AH-W150.

Quick impressions from the Lab

Comment by Ralph Graves Staff Writer - Creative,

Great sound if you have great vision

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 9/18/2012 11:13:00 AM

Overall, I think wireless Bluetooth headphones are the way to go if you need music when you exercise. There are no cords, and I didn't have to worry about a sudden move causing the cord to go taut and earbuds being yanked out of the ears (ouch).

The AH-W150 Exercise Freak headphones address those problems, and does so well. The electronics in the earpieces may take up some room, but they're so lightweight, I hardly knew they were there. The sound from the Labs' iPhone® was nice and tight. Plenty of bass, and plenty of detail. The in-ear buds are set on swivel posts, making them pretty easy to get set into your ear. Take the time to do it properly (and change sleeves if you need to). The better the fit, the better the sound.

My only caution about the W150's is that those electronics stored in the section of the headphones that rest behind the ears take up space. Not a problem — unless, like me, you wear glasses. I found that the headphones didn't sit quite as securely as I wanted them to when they were resting on my glasses' frames. When I removed my glasses and tried the W150's out, they fit comfortably and securely.

Terrible - NOT sweat proof

Written By Garrett, Haverford, PA on Saturday, September 21, 2013

These do not live up to their claims of being for "Exercise Freaks". We've had three pairs fail on us for an unknown reason. I think they are not sweatproof, but customer support at Denon keeps saying they are. They are insisting that we are charging them incorrectly and that charging them in the wall rather than the USB port on my computer is the reason they are shorting out. This seems very unlikely.

The thing that bothers me the most is the attitude of Denon Customer Support reps. It's like they are annoyed that I'm calling and act like it's my fault. (Crutchfield has been the complete opposite. Very helpful and responsive.)

Basically, I'll never buy another Denon product again, unless they make it right. I will continue to shop Crutchfield though.

Basic Advice - Don't buy these.
Pros:
Good idea.... (if they worked)
Cons:
Shorted out and stopped working after one run. We've had to replace these 3 times. Denon is lying about the problem and contradicting themselves. They are telling me I'm charging them wrong, but a representative from a different company said that there is no difference between charging on the computer and charging in the wall.

Look elsewhere

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am no stranger to Denon headphones. I own a pair of D7100, D600, and D400. I have enjoyed every aspect of these headphones. Which begs the questions, WHY! I read more than a few reviews about the bluetooth shorting out after a few weeks of use and was hoping this wouldn't be the case with mine. At first I had issues getting the sizing just right to stay in place once I started my workout (no big deal)., The sound quality was equivalent to $10 pair of sony around the ear headphones when not placed in the right position(again not a big deal). The deal breaker was after 3 weeks of use the bluetooth started going out multiple times per use. This is utterly unacceptable as half the time I am riding my bike and cannot stop to fiddle with it in hopes of resetting the connection. The range on these things were great(40+FT), but that didn't make up for the shorting out. At first I thought maybe my phones BT was crapping out, however I have 4 other BT devices that never randomly disconnect, especially at the frequency that these did. I ended up getting irritated enough that I just tossed them into a trench while riding my bike.
Pros:
Range 40+ feet in open area Compact Pouch Aesthetic functionality...
Cons:
BT Shorting out after 3 weeks...

Good Concept, Poor Execution

Written By KFunk, Atlanta, ga on Saturday, August 24, 2013

I purchased these through Crutchfield in October 2012. At first they were great. However, they soon shorted out and stopped working in Feburary 2013. Denon replaced them with a new pair in May which have also started shorting out and now they will not turn off. All of the negative online reviews are met with a reply from Denon offering to replace them for free. It's time consuming and they request all of your original purchase documents in order to honor the replacement. Clearly there is a serious design flaw in these headphones. For something to be called "exercise freak" they better be waterproof and rugged. Clearly these aren't. They are also so heavy that they frequently fall out of my ears while laying on a bench or ab-board. Crutchfield has always been a trusted source but they don't warranty the product beyond 90 days. Before you buy, read all the reviews on and heed others' warnings to steer clear of these headphones.
Pros:
adjustable ear piece, easy to use controls, quick set-up
Cons:
don't appear to be truly waterproof, frequent shorting of wiring, poor battery life

I like the product and sound quality is great when connected to my phone but when using with my I Pod the sound breaks up and quality is mediocre at best. still haven been able to trouble shoot the issue its disappointing to lose connection every time i sit on a piece of gym equipment. It is after all a product designed for fitness
Pros:
Fit and design are great
Cons:
Reception is imperfect and gets worse in an environment with metal gym equipment.

I love these headphones!! So far I have paired them to my iPod to use during my workout. They fit snug in my ears and no wires to worry about pulling out (verses wired headphones). Music quality is very good as well (they are able to drowned out the awful music played in the gym). Very easy to use too.
Pros:
Easy to use

I have had these earphones for 2 weeks and I am SO impressed. Had no issues connecting them to my iPod. Sound quality is good (I haven't had any issues with the bass quality so far). These headphones are really good for working out. I love to take them on the treadmill; they stay in place very well. The battery life is longer than I was expecting too.
Pros:
Very portable. Easy to use. Great battery life

Useless.

Written By RD1, Denver, CO. on Thursday, April 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Don't waste your money on these. I am in the Sound business and these sound horrible. Even boosting the bass on my phone did not work. Way too much treble and very low bass response. My $10 Sony headphones sound better. You would think for the price they would at least have good sound, but no. I think they spent more on the packaging than they did on the actual headphone technology.
Pros:
None.
Cons:
Everything.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

based on reviews i was a little worried about the bluetooth connection... but i have connected them to my windows laptop and my galaxy andriod phone and can walk around my living room without losing the connection. at about 15 ft i'll notice a little hiccup. i'd have to say any connection problems are with the paired device and not the headset.

the sound is awesome...

the ear tips took some playing around with to find the right ones to use. i'm not sure who is using the biggest tips; but if you can get those in your ears you must have the ears of an elephant. in fact, if you're using the big ones you can probably hear me typing this... i went right the xs size and had trouble getting them to stay in my ears. i was thinking they were too big; but the next bigger size actually worked better.

overall, i'd recommend the product to anyone looking for good quality, great sounding, wireless headphones...

AWESOME Product! Denon AH-W150 Exercise FreakT

Written By AlysonR, New Jersey on Friday, April 12, 2013

I've just recently became an avid gym junkie and after looking at all types of headphones I finally found these that fit perfectly! They don't fall out of my ears, the sound is crystal clear and the best part is that they are wireless! No reason to get tangled up in wires while I get lost running miles on the treadmill or bikes! What's cool is if I need to answer a phone call I can do that too hands free!
Pros:
Great price for a great product. Crystal Clear sound. Perfect for those "exercise freaks" out there!

Disappointed

Written By Adam, Utah on Monday, March 25, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these on Thursday. The bluetooth works flawlessly, love it. The only problem is that they won't seal well or stay in my ear. The ear plugs that fit well slide out of my ear after I start working out and sweating. If I could exercise with my fingers constantly putting pressure on the ear buds, then the sound would be great, but because this is not possible, the sound is very tinny. I will be going back to my standard iPhone earbuds that came with my iPhone.
Pros:
Wireless
Cons:
Slides out of your ears as you sweat

Great Wireless Workout Headphones

Written By SarahM, Boston, MA on Tuesday, February 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Certainly seems like whatever issues people were having with the bluetooth technology were fixed- I left my phone on the treadmill when I went to go grab a towel and the sound continued to be perfect.

I really love these headphones for long runs and at the gym so I don't have to worry about tangling my arms or weights up with the cord from my headphones. The sound quality is clear and the technology works great.

I haven't worn in-ear headphones before, so that took some getting used to, but I do love the way the Exercise Freak headphones sound and look!
Pros:
Bluetooth technology works great, love the wireless feature.

So happy with the Exercise Freaks!

Written By SarahT, Boston, MA on Friday, February 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got my Exercise Freak headphones in the mail this week, and I am really happy with them! I decided to buy them after hearing that Denon fixed the problems they had with the Bluetooth capabilities. I've used the Exercise Freaks for about a week now and the Bluetooth is working perfectly. It connects to my iPhone in a matter of seconds and the sound is 100% clear. The headphones also stay really secure and comfortable during my workout which is a huge benefit. There is nothing more frustrating than having your earbuds yanked out of your ears while on the treadmill! Wireless is certainly a great thing. I'm quite happy with this purchase and would recommend them to any of my friends.
Pros:
Connects to Bluetooth easily & stays secure during exercise

Denon AH-W150 Exercise Freak™

Written By Wilson, Louisiana on Wednesday, February 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read several negative reviews after I made the purchase and I am glad I hadn't read them before as it may have changed my mind about the purchase. I HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEM WITH CONNECTIVITY unless the battery is VERY low. I am please with the battery life that I get out of the product. I use these when I'm working in the yard and have broken several expensive pairs getting the wires caught on something. Functionality of the product is great.
Pros:
Great reception with my iPhone blue tooth. I was more into function than sound quality, but they have a nice range.
Cons:
Could be a littlbe bit easier to put on and fit, but not everyone's ears are made like mine. Sound quality is very good have had better, but it served what I was looking for.

Good Product, Some considerations to be aware of

Written By RuthH, Seattle, WA on Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Good product, it seemlessly connects to your smartphone, very little set up. I did have two issues for buyers to consider. First, they mean what they say when they recommend carrying the phone above the waist to maximize connection. I carried it in my pocket on a run, right at the waist, and it went in and out frequently. I'm not even a tall person or have a long torso. Works fine from an arm holster though. Second, the headband has no way to adjust the length, and apparently my head is smaller than most because there was quite a bit of extra that would annoyingly rub on jacket collars, etc.
Pros:
Waterproof, easy set up, great sound, wonderful not to have to deal with a headphone cord while running!
Cons:
Headband is not adjustable, limited range of reliable bluetooth connection.

Great product for exercise and blue tooth calling. The only issue I had was with the size of the carrying case as both the headset and the charging cord made it a little cumbersome to zip/close. I went to a 6 inch USB cable to make it better. I highly recommend this product.
Pros:
Good sound, stays on your ears, no issues with microphone when making calls.
Cons:
USB cable and headset was a little too tight for the carrying case.

Written By Rgenk, Hoboken, nj on Saturday, January 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headphones are a great fit and very sleek. The bluetooth technology is not good. I am a runner and was excited to try these out. I put my iPad in my pocket and there was a lot of static and breaking up. This was pretty constant throughout my workouts. When I was in the gym and put them on the treadmill or floor the reception was good. Would not recommend for running unless u put ur iPod in an arm band.
Pros:
Good fit and did not loosen during my workouts
Cons:
Bluetooth technology is not good. Your phone or iPad needs to be in the open to get good reception

Great training tool

Written By NancyI, NJ on Saturday, January 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It grew on me and it is now as indispensable as good pair of running shoes. Initially, I felt some doubt about them, as it was hard to pair my Droid, then I had to go to the Droid store to download and setup the Sport app. It felt too complicated for ear-buds But once everything was setup, it worked great! The device has several unexpected features that would have made my training for marathons when younger much easier. I expected to get music, but didn't expect it to also keep track of my pace and work with my phone to show the distance of my runs, elevation changes, and the route I am taking. There are other features that I haven't tried, so I can not comment on them, but I am impressed how my expectations went from a wireless headphone/bluetooth earpiece to a impactful training device.

My advice to others is to thoroughly read the instructions: it will save you the initial hassle of setting it up.
Pros:
It stays snuggled in my ears during the workout and is comfortable and lightweight, so I don't notice it when I hit my stride. The lack of a wire makes a big difference during exercises. The app chiming in and telling me my pace is a very nice touch.
Cons:
I would have liked an Ikea-style setup manual (easy to understand pictures) instead of paper and booklets with tiny print that came with it. The microphone quality is not as clear as I would have liked. The buttons on it are also small, but given the size, I don't think this could be helped.

Work as described, love the wireless!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked as I'd hoped, wirelessly while I biked or did the elliptical at the gym. Never had any disconnects or static, and thought the audio quality was just fine. Definitely experiment with the different ear buds (included in the package) to find the best fit as it makes a difference! Also note that these block sound pretty well, so you may not want to use in places where you need to hear the outside world easily.

Awesome!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are great. I am using an iPhone 4 with IOS version 5.1.1. There are no bluetooth connection problems at all, as others indicated in their reviews. I suspect (as the tech guys suggested) that they are probably related to the phone, and not the headphones. Range is over 40 feet line of sight, and when i cycle or run it does not matter which arm the phone is on, there has never been any drops.

There is not much bass in these, but I did not expect it. Audiophiles may be disappointed, but I am using them for exercise/fitness, so it did not matter to me. Waterproof and wireless. Exactly what i wanted. Would highly recommend!
Pros:
Waterproof, wireless!
Cons:
Little bass

I'm not hard of hearing

Written By Jeff, Washington, dc on Saturday, December 29, 2012

I could not get them loud enough for inspiration. Called the rep and he said that I had done all I could do to make them at full volume. I sent them back. Unless you like soft music, these are not for you.

Poor connectivity and sound issues

Written By Twebcomics, Spartanburg, SC on Thursday, December 27, 2012

The Denon name led me to purchase these hoping for great sound quality during my runs. I was very disappointed in the headset overall. It had some connectivity issues with losing connection with my phone even at close range, but the biggest concern was the poor sound quality. Don't get me wrong, if you can get a perfect fit in your ear and create an airtight fit - they sound great. The problem is that once you move around a bit, the earpiece moves slightly and you lose the 'seal'. Once the airtight seal is gone, so is the sound quality. All the bass and mid-tones disappear once the earpiece shifts even slightly. I tried all of the earplug sizes and none of them got the fit needed. Close, but back to my old bluetooth headset...
Pros:
Fit snugly behind the ears and are comfortable enough to wear and exercise with.
Cons:
Connectivity problems even at close range and fitting issues with the earplugs.

Best Wireless Sport Headphones

Written By Tommy, Chattanooga, TN on Tuesday, December 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones work excellent. That being said, I'll elaborate as to why I think they are amazing. First, they fit me and everyone who tries them easily and are not too big at all which was a concern because I'm 5' 3". The device I use is a rooted Droid 3. These headphones do act a bit weird in that I cannot get them to work for calls and actually had to disable call audio on the phone for the device. Also the call button shorts out or something. Another weird thing about these is the reception. The reception while running is great if it is on my right arm, however when I'm working out in the gym I usually just lay the phone within 10m of my area (anywhere) and have no issues. I suppose my body eats the signal or something because if my phone is tucked close on my body is drops the signal. Finally, the battery life is outstanding, the audio is acceptable (it's freaking wireless), and these little things are most definitely sweat proof. I have had my heart rate 170+ for 20 minutes and been drenched with these still fully functional.
Pros:
Reliability Battery Life Audio quality Range Fit
Cons:
Weird reception Messed up phone call button

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headphones arrived on time and in great shape. They work very well and their acoustic performance is on par with everything Denon makes. Have used them for about a month now and they have worked well. The plugs on the interfaces (yes they are small) can be fragile and need to be handled with care.
Pros:
Light, bright, sound good and are fun
Cons:
Some small and delicate pieces handle with care. Not for studio or heavy hand use

Appauling Bluetooth Reception - DO NOT BUY

Written By hdtv4me, New York on Sunday, October 07, 2012

On my second set and I am just so disappointed - the reception is just terrible. Drop outs make them completely unusable. I am a big Denon fan and really cannot believe this product made it out of their labs. Apparently everyone straps their iPhone's to their head when they run in Japan - the reception is so bad you literally can make it drop out just by moving your arm or turning your head. Ridiculous.
Pros:
Hard to say anything nice if the product design is so inherently flawed that it fails to perform as a headset. Looks cool. Light weight. Easy to pair. I'll trade both for a headset that actually works.
Cons:
Aside from the reception I found the volume buttons to be hard to use while running. When there is reception, the sound quality is pretty good once you get the right size ear buds on them. But again....the reception is so poor you'll hear a lot more drop outs than you will music with these things. I cannot overstate enough that these things are awful - DO NOT BUY.
Crutchfield response on Thursday, October 18, 2012
Bluetooth reception problems can be caused by the transmitting device (your phone). For example, there have been reports of problems with Bluetooth in iOS6. Before giving up on a set of Bluetooth headphones, try troubleshooting your phone. Restoring or updating the phone's software might help. Contact your phone supplier for details on how to do that.

Buy at your own risk

Written By BS, Dallas, TX on Friday, October 05, 2012

What you won't see on the Denon site is the warning page inside the box telling you to put it in your purse or on an armband and ONLY on the right side of your body. I gather the TX/RX is in the right earpiece. Reception is terrible, you can't put it in your pocket or hold it in your left hand, it cuts out. I have not tried putting it into my right pocket yet. I'm right handed like about 90% of the world's population is, I keep my keys in my right and phone in my left pocket. When working out I keep my phone on my left arm so I can access my apps with my dominate hand. I worked out last night for the first time with these and it was terrible, constantly cutting in and out. Movement effects the reception, as I was doing bench press it cut in and out. That's a little over 1 foot from the receiver. I don't want to move it to the right side. The Bluetooth range is no more than a couple of feet at best. Sound quality is pretty good, bass is better than my wired Denon but they could stand a little more treble (don't want to use the EQ, it eats up battery). Fit is about like every other over the ear HF, but the tops are bulkier so they were hitting my ball cap. I have sunglasses that have straight ear pieces so it isn't an issue because I just sit them on top. Regular glasses I could see being a problem. I have trouble with keeping a good seal on the right earpiece but that may just be the way my ear canal is. I am considering returning them simply because of the reception.
Pros:
You can pair them with multiple devices, it seems to work on first come first serve so I just turn off the Bluetooth on my devices I don't want it to pair with when I turn it on. They are pretty comfortable as there is a little bubble cushion on the inside, there are no wires to fiddle with, and they charge quickly.
Cons:
Bluetooth range/reception. I can't suggest that you buy these.

Great headphones for the runners out there!

Written By RW, NEW YORK on Wednesday, October 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really great headphone for the person who loves to run. No more dangling and annoying wires while you run or workout. Truly stays on securely, just slip on the right size earpiece and your good to go. So far using it for a month 4 times a week.
Pros:
Secure fit, sound quality, battery life, and brand name reputation in music.
Cons:
None that i can think of.
