Features

Overview: The Denon Control Dock for iPod ASD-3W Wi-Fi network client device allows your iPod to be connected to your home network system either through an Ethernet port or by wireless connection. MP3 files and non-protected AAC Audio files from an iPod can then be streamed for listening over your home network. Additionally, viewing video pictures with video compatible iPods is also possible. The ASD-3W is DLNAA certified and is PlaysForSure compliant for ease of setup and use. The standard D-dock port is also supplied for current model receiver integration and is compatible with previous receiver models that have the Denon D-dock port for command and control. Your iPod will also stay charged while docked in the ASD-3W keeping it ready to go.  A remote is also supplied with the ASD-3W for use with non-Denon systems.

iPod Compatibility: The ASD-3W is compatible with iPods having a dock connector including the iPod Nano video, iPod Classic, iPod touch and iPhone. Adapters are included for the 20/30 GB and 40/60 GB iPod Photos; and the iPod mini. The adaptors for the 5th generation iPods and nanos are included with those units. The adapters necessary for the 3rd and 4th generation iPods are available directly from Apple.

Note: There is Firmware upgrade required for compatibility with the iPod nano video, classic, touch and iPhone located at the following web address - http://www.usa.denon.com/ASD-3N-3WFirmwareUpdate-Web1207.pdf . This latest firmware corrects video/photo playback in Browse and Remote mode for the nano video and classic, however, Browse Mode still does not function with video/photo material purchased from the iTunes Store. In addition, this latest Firmware corrects video/photo Remote Mode playback for the touch and iPhone, however, Browse Mode does not work due to new Apple specification.

iPod Photo and Video Playback: The ASD-3W is compatible with iPod photo (4th generation), iPod video (5th generation), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod nano (3rd/4th generation), iPod touch (1st/2nd generation), and iPhone/iPhone3G using the included S-video cable.

Denon Component Compatibility: The ASD-3W is compatible with Denon receivers and Denon mini-component systems featuring the dock control jack.

Additional Component Compatibility: The ASD-3W can also be used with components not having the dock control jack but do have audio/video inputs. You are still able to control the iPod from the ASD-3W's remote control or the iPod, itself.

Network Audio Playback: The ASD-3W can be used to play Internet radio stations or music or still picture (JPEG) files stored on your computer through your connected Denon receiver.

  • Network Music/Photo File Playback: The ASD-3W can access Windows Media Player (version 11 or later) and iTunes (non-DRM files only) to get music, photos and playlists from your PC and play them through your connected Denon receiver and television. The ASD-3W supports MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, WAV (LPCM) and FLAC music audio file formats and JPEG still images.
  • Internet Radio: The ASD-3W allows you to access a list of over 7,000 radio stations (MP3/WMA format) via "vTuner" service and enjoy your favorite music channels when connected to your PC's network and your compatible Denon receiver. Stations can be selected by genre and region.

GUI (Graphical User Interface): To allow for easier browsing and playback of your files, the ASD-3W provides an intuitive GUI with album artwork via S-Video connection to your television. Multi-language for both GUI and Meta Data are available including English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese.

Remote Control: The ASD-3W comes supplied with an IR wireless  remote control for operating your docked iPod. The remote control included with your compatible Denon receiver can also be used to control your iPod. If you prefer the controls on your iPod can be used as well.

Note: When the Dock Control terminal is connected, the ASD-3W no longer accepts remote control commands. To use the remote control unit, point it at the remote control sensor on the connected Denon receiver when operating it.

Disappointed

Written By Richard, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, February 26, 2009

Very Disappointed! ... The device installed easily enough and played music directly from my iPod. BUT .... connection to my wireless network was a No Go. If I connected using an ethernet cable it worked, but the device never would connect as wireless (other wireless devices have had no problem). Tried firmware updates, manually configuring IP, even opening up the firewall .... nothing worked. Googled the product and found similar complaints. And everything Denon tech support and Crutchfield support suggested failed as well. So the item was returned. Also of note, the remote for this device is VERY sluggish with the menu interface. The idea is great, but this device needs to go back to the drawing board.

Denon could do better

Written By bwt1951, Winston-Salem, NC on Thursday, February 12, 2009

BEFORE purchasing any Denon iPod dock, go to the Denon website and check the compatibility chart to see if your iPod works as you expect with the docking station.

I have the ADS-3W connected to my iPod 120GB Classic and my Denon 789 receiver. I have the audio cables as well as the S-video cable connected to my receiver so that I can see the album artwork and song info on my monitor screen. The album artwork and song info DOES NOT appear like what you see on the iPod display, something in which I was disappointed.

I find the GUI on this product very primitive and slow to respond to remote commands issued by the Denon receiver remote control. There have been several times when the GUI hangs and I have to wait several seconds before it catches up. I also noticed that when the GUI times out on the monitor screen, the Denon reciever display is no longer updated with the elapsed time and song info. Pressing the 'Enter' key on the Denon remote restores the monitor's display and updates the Denon display. Not a great interface IMHO.

Otherwise the docking station performs as advertised. It's nice to be able to listen to your iPod and internet radio stations through your Denon receiver with the touch of a button. I've been a huge fan and purchaser of Denon products for years and I know they could have produced a much better GUI on this product than they did.

Works great except for one issue

Written By Hallstrom, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 28, 2009

I set the ASD-3W up just after christmas and only encountered one issue. I have a Denon 787 receiver and according to both the directions for the receiver and the docking station I should set an input up as the "Ipod Dock" through the receiver. Doing this the receiver would not recognize the docking station at all - the menu on the TV indicated no docking station. So I would see the menu but have no connection to the docking station. HOWEVER - if i did not tell the receiver that - for instance the Ipod was Video Aux - but just used video aux as is everything worked fine and the system sees the docking station.

Note I contacted Denon and they informed me that the "communication link" to the receiver had been turned off on the 3W (permanently from the factory) due to compatibility issues. No other explanation or ideas on how to make the docking station and receiver communicate. The tech support solution was to replace with the wired docking station but the whole purpose of my selection of the 3W was for the wireless feature.

Other than this quirk I had no issues connecting to my wireless network - linksys b+g - accessing the internet radio - or connection to a Nano gen 1, Nano gen 2 and a Ipod Touch Gen 2 despite the guide not indicating compatibility with Nano Gen 1 or 2. Note that I needed to make sure the Ipods were seated properly.

Denon ASD-3W

Written By Brian, Seattle on Monday, February 04, 2008

I am disappointed with this product. I hooked it up to a Denon AVR 3808, and I purchased it primarily to integrate with my iPod and to get internet radio.

Initially, trying to get the system set up, it did not easily find and hook up with the 802.11b router that I had. I ultimately replaced my router with a new 802.11g router and had more success. The menu system was not very intuitive, and the manual is very hard to follow.

After finally getting dock set up, I was excited to use it with my iPod. However, I was disappointed with the lag trying to use my iPod through the remote. There is a significant delay between inputting a comand on the remote control, and getting the iPod to respond. I would often input 2 or 3 commands before the iPod would finally respond.

Using the dock with my PC also resulted in tremendous lag (which may be a result of my older PC). Photos take a ridiculous amount of time to access (15-60+ seconds), and still only intermitently render them correctly on my monitor. Sometimes the photos don't render at all, and I have to page back and forth to get them to render.

Finally, for internet radio, it works with a Denon website that allows you to select "favorites" that will be subsequently downloaded to your dock and then accessed through the menu. It works fine, but again, there is a pretty significant delay with the commands, and Denon's website to manage your favorites is a bare-boned site without anything beyond the basic features to manage your stations.

Denon ASD-3W

Written By Biffer, Texas on Tuesday, January 29, 2008

I am really impressed with this iPod dock. Yes it is one of if not the most expensive iPod dock out there, but it connects to my wireless 802.11g router. I can't quite get my favorite radio stations in Austin tuned in just right, but they come in crystal clear over the internet. The only down side is the interface could be a lot more intuitive. I was also disappointed that the remote that came with the Denon AVR-2803CI did not control anything with the dock. I don't know Denon . . . make the interface a little less irritating and it would be a 5 for sure.
