Our take on the Denon ASD-51W

by Ralph Graves
Denon

This ASD-51W wireless dock makes it easy for you to enjoy music and videos from your iPod or iPhone® on your audio/video system. It makes a Wi-Fi® connection to your home network for even more entertainment options, allowing access to music and photos stored on your PC's hard drive. You can also tune in Internet radio stations without turning on your computer at all.

The dock's "Party Mode" setting lets you stream audio to up to five networked Denon devices. The source can be your iPod, Internet radio, your Rhapsody or Napster subscription, or the music stored on your PC. Have everybody grooving to the same tune in your living room, your kitchen, and wherever else you have a connected Denon system.

The ASD-51W displays a user-friendly menu screen on your TV, making it easy to browse through your PC's and iPod's songs and playlists to select the music you want. And you can control everything with your Denon receiver's remote. The dock includes its own remote, too, so you can use it with other brands of audio/video gear.

Excellent dock, but had some connection issues

Written By Michael, South Riding, VA on Sunday, January 24, 2010

This is definitely an awesome, feature-filled iPod dock. Solid construction, good looks, and it is the only dock I've seen that has a digital audio output to take advantage of my receiver's superior D/A converters. I've confirmed full compatibility with iPod Classic 160GB, 4th- & 5th-gen Nanos.

I had some trouble hooking it up properly with my new Denon AVR-2310, though. The receiver's iPod input allows you to "assign" the dock on that input, which then shows the iPod menu/playlist/track info on the receiver display; however, it seems when you make that assignment, the receiver forces it to the L-R analog inputs only. The only way to get the digital input to work is to remove the iPod assign, and it seems the only drawback is not seeing the info on the receiver display. But since the OSD on the TV is so cool, I don't need it on the receiver anyway.

I admit that is more of a receiver issue than with this dock, but you would think Denon would have that little issue worked out between their dock and receivers. The Denon Dock link works fine -- my remote controls the iPod as it should. The sound is great, and out of the box it gets a huge number of Internet Radio stations from all over the world. The wireless connectivity was a snap. The only other issue is that it keeps saying there is a firmware update available but when I try to do the update it never works succesfully. Luckily I don't seem to be missing anything by not having it.
