Denon

Our take on the Denon AVR-1910

Treat yourself to a totally engaging home theater experience with the Denon AVR-1910. This powerful receiver delivers 90 high-current watts to as many as seven home theater speakers, enveloping you in realistic, lifelike sound. You get decoding for the latest high-resolution surround sound formats, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio, plus the very latest Dolby technology — Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz. This cool new processing lets you add an optional pair of front "height" speakers as an alternative to using two surround back speakers. You can place these above your main front speakers to enjoy a larger soundstage with an expanded vertical dimension — an excellent sonic enhancement to video games and movies.

Superior picture quality from every video source
The '1910 features 1080p HDMI switching for four high-def video sources. Analog-to-HDMI conversion lets you send all your video sources to an HDMI-capable TV using a single digital cable, simplifying hookup and maximizing picture quality for each source. Plus, when you use the receiver's HDMI output, it can upconvert your non-HD video sources to resolutions as high as 1080p, for a better match with your HDTV's high-res screen.

Precision auto setup tailors sound to your room
Denon includes sophisticated MultEQ® auto-calibration to take the guesswork out of setting up your surround sound system. Using the supplied microphone, MultEQ analyzes sound from up to six different listening positions in your room, then automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each speaker. You'll enjoy spacious, highly accurate sound across a wide listening area. Dynamic Volume mode keeps the sound clear and steady, eliminating those annoying spikes in volume that accompany so many TV commercials.

Flexible entertainment options
Dual-room/dual-source audio capability lets you enjoy home theater in your main room while a housemate enjoys stereo music in a second room. You can integrate your iPod® by adding one of Denon's control docks, and tune in to SIRIUS Satellite radio with the addition of an optional SiriusConnect™ home tuner kit.

Audio Features

7-Channel Equal Power Amplifier: The Denon AVR-1910 features a 7-channel equal power, discrete amplifier. Each channel is rated at 90 watts RMS. The amp can power a 7.1-channel surround system in the main room; or it can power a 5.1-channel system and the surround back channels can be reassigned to power Zone 2 speakers at the same time. To enjoy Dolby Pro Logic IIz, you can reassign the power amp from the two surround back channels to the two front high channels. You can also configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers. In addition, the AVR-1910 features a set of "B" speakers, wired in parallel to the receiver's "A" speakers, for listening to the same audio source in another room.

Robust Power Supply: To produce a clear, stable power circuit that prevents unwanted noise from affecting the sound, the Denon AVR-1910 has a dedicated CPU transformer that is separate from the audio and video circuitry. The AVR-1910 features a powerful rectifier circuit with 12,000 μF block capacitors and a bridge diode of 8A capacity to supply stable current with negligible noise.

Minimum Signal Path Design: The "simple & straight" design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to immaculately clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to an absolute minimum.

Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to thoroughly suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of cast-iron feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Denon AVR-1910 is equipped with a high-resolution 32-bit floating point Digital Signal Processor (DSP). All elements of the Surround Processor are optimized to the highest standards by the use of selected high performance and discrete components, particularly the A/D and D/A converters and the sophisticated DSP surround decoder.

Audyssey: This receiver is equipped with an Auto Setup and MultiEQ equalization function, to achieve the most ideal sound field for your room. The AVR-1910's Audyssey MultiEQ function is designed to optimize the sound quality at each listening position in the room. The included DM-A409 microphone is used to measure test tones at each listening position. This measured data is then analyzed using a program to improve acoustic characteristics in the listening area. For best results at least 6 positions should be measured, including a main position. The main position is given more weight in the calculations. The Audyssey EQ offers the following settings.

  • MultiEQ: The MultiEQ function offers the following adjustments:
    • Audyssey: optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics
    • Audyssey Byp. L/R: optimizes all speakers except front left and right
    • Audyssey Flat: optimize frequency response of all speakers to flat
    • Manual: adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 khz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz
    • Off: turns equalizer off
  • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
  • Dynamic Volume: Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are clearly heard. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), or Midnight (high).

Note: You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver. You can adjust speaker configuration (large/small/none), bass setting (LFE/LFE+Main), low-pass crossover (80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz), speaker distance (0-60'), channel level (-12 to +12dB), and high-pass crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz).

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The unit can be set to store the most recently selected surround mode for each input, so it is automatically activated each the particular input is chosen. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital is a 5.1 multi-channel digital surround format.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, MultEQ, Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Dual Zone/Dual Source Operation: Denon's Dual-Zone/Dual-Source function lets you select a different source for listening in a different location of your home. The Zone 2 audio output has independent source selection and can be output as a line-level or speaker-level signal, depending on the amplifier assign setting.

  • Line Out: By using the line-level outputs on the AVR-1910, you can connect an external receiver or integrated amplifier in a second room, allowing you to listen to 7.1 surround in the main room and play a different audio source in another room of your home. The volume of Zone 2 is controlled by your optional integrated amp.

AVR-1910

Written By J.G., PA on Tuesday, November 30, 2010

I replaced my Technique AV-DTS receiver that I've had since 2003 with the Denon AVR-
1910 back in July. Overall the receiver is okay. I'm using Klipsch speakers as my
mains. The Denon has no adjustments regarding bass, treble, etc, as my Technique
had. New release DVD's sound okay, but if you are watching a concert DVD as I like to
do, the bass is nowhere to be found. With my Technique receiver I could always go to
straight to stereo mode if bass was absent. The only choice with the Denon is to go to
arena mode, which makes the singers sound like they're in a tin can. After talking to
Crutchfield it looks like I have to purchase a subwoofer to get the bass that I desire
regarding concert DVD's. Other than the horrible remote that is not user friendly, the
Denon is pretty good. I'm annoyed that even with my Klipsch speakers as mains, which
thundered with my Technique, I still need a subwoofer. I guess that older technology
can still hold it's own in some respects.

Loaded with options, almost to many..

Written By Paul, Moose Lake, Minnesota on Monday, August 02, 2010

I received the Denon AVR-1910 last week, and have had about a week to use the receiver. It is loaded with options and settings. It is a solid amp that does what it says, and has more power than my speakers can handle. It is a very responsive amp which handles range, and bass extremely well. You can't go wrong for the price of this amp, it will handle multi-zones as well. I did have some "white snow" when playing back Blu-Rays which are sent via the amp, I spoke to Denon about today and they are unable to problem solve. They blammed it on a bad disk from Netflix... really? Otherwise, it this has been a no issue amp.

I bought this unit to upgrade from an older Denon 1804 which still worked fine but since I was upgrading to my first flat panel LCD and bluray player I needed a receiver that could decode the lastest sound formats. I loved my old Denon, but I love this one even more. Matched with the right speakers the sound is amazing. Clear, crisp clean highs, mid tones are perfect and lows are low and thats just from blurays, music is just as clear, I have my Ipod connented and it's never sounded better. For now I have Polk RM7's in a 7.1 config (which I will be reviewing also) and I couldn't be happier, set up wasn't to bad if your at all familar with Denon, the self calibration worked awesomely though I did do some minor tweeking afterwards to suit my owe tastes. Only draw back, the remote totally blows, but the unit itself rocks.

Not for the light hearted

Written By Kevin, Garfield, WA on Friday, July 23, 2010

Denon AVR-1910 is an amazing product. This product is not for the light hearted, with the right speakers you will feel the music, and create a rush that only higher end receivers can create. This product is also not for the light hearted when it comes to the set up. I found screaming at the manuel helped lower my blood pressure because of the missing information. We already know what cables are the best, don't waste the space!! If you don't, please find a friend to help you, because the manuel will not help. I will probably need another week to tweak it out to my satisfaction.

The remote and the manuel are the most useless things. PLEASE buy a Harmony remote from Crutchfield at the same time you are buying this wonderful product. Also do an internet search to find the laymans manuel which helped me through this set up. With those two things you will be fine even if you have somewhat limited experience. I am no pro, this is only my second receiver and my old one was an old Yamaha with no HDMI. I just love this receiver and buying it from Crutchfield gave me a great price and support.

Denon - Great Receiver

Written By Bambigirlfriend, Michigan on Monday, July 19, 2010

What a bargain - This receiver produces great sound and the added features are a plus! The price is affordable but the machine looks and sounds much more expensive. I have an ear for detecting great sound systems. I hooked 2-pr. of Bose 501 speakers (front A and surround inputs) and now this receiver rocks like a Home Theater System!

Denon delivers once more

Written By Levike, California on Friday, July 02, 2010

Here I go again with my review of another Denon product. I got the Denon AVR 1910 AV Receiver for my bedroom setup. It has replaced my Onkyo 606 which I dont own anymore :o I could not be happier with this Denon for my bedroom. I am using it for PS3 and Wii gaming and also. All I can say that this receiver is perfect for a bedroom or medium sized livingroom. I am using Definitive Technology Mythos Seven and Procenter 1000. Everything sounds so much better with the Denon 1910. If you want an awesome performing AV receiver and want Denon then this is it. Amazing value and the price crutchfield has it for is unheard of. So go buy one until stock lasts which is not going to be for very long. I would buy another one if I needed it.

Best price and amazing performance in every aspect. Go buy one now!!!!

awesome sound

Written By mary mahalo, Kauai, HI on Friday, June 18, 2010

The manual isn't great but you can puzzle it out. The remote with it's buttons on the back is different but it is better than the remotes that have multiple uses for each button. The great part is setting up the speakers with the microphone, it is a bit time consuming but well worth it. Once you set the speakers up no matter where you are sitting the sound is great. You won't have to constantly adjust the volume to up the speaking voices and reduce the sound effects. Everything is at the right volume for what it is. As my husband said last night, "wow, you can hear them walking" This is a great receiver at a great price and I would recommend it to anyone..

Wow - Truly Awesome

Written By Steven, San Marcos, CA on Monday, June 14, 2010

I setup this receiver a few days ago and am very impressed with what a difference it made to my surround sound system. This is replacing a 7 or 8 year old 6.1 Sony receiver. The difference in sound quality is like night and day.

I did not find the user manual or remote control to be all that bad like some other reviews. Batpig's manual (do a search) is still a must for initial setup, but the Denon manual does offer a lot of details on options that batpig doesn't. And the remote, while a little clunky, is just fine IMHO. Once you know what each of the buttons does it is fine.

Initial setup took about 90 minutes and I immediately noticed a sound difference. But I had not run the Audessy program yet. I did that the next day and WOW, that thing is amazing. Watched the Celtics/Lakers game in HD with surround sound - was awesome. Audessy took about 30 minutes to run from setup to end.

I also really like the 7 speaker stereo sound option when listening to music. Also, at first the whole ZONE2 thing seemed like a pain because you need an amplifier for zone2. But I happened to have the sony still and used that. It is pretty cool to be able to send sound from a different source to a different room, but a little clunky to be controlling the volume from the second amp.

Summary - I've barely tapped the options on this thing and I'm already impressed. Highly recommend.

Great Receiver - Incredible Value!!

Written By average consumer, Boston, MA on Sunday, June 06, 2010

This Receiver is HANDS-DOWN the best receiver for the money. I was replacing an older receiver that had the traditional A/B speaker set-up. The drawback to the old receiver is that if I turned on the "B" speakers (which happened to be in my kitchen) I had to turn the "A" speakers to the same audio source. This Denon receiver allows you to use TWO DIFFERENT audio sources for the two distinct listening zones in your house. When you do this, you can only run a 5.1 system in the main listening zone, which is not a big deal for me since I don't have enough speakers to support 7.1 to begin with. One thing to note - as you are setting up your different audio sources, be sure to connect them via both inputs - digital (Coax, Optical, etc.) as well as the analog inputs (standard RCA) on the back of the receiver. Zone 2 can only recognize the RCA inputs. It took me the better part of the week to figure that one out so I just saved you a TON of time troubleshooting. In addition to the true 2-Zone functionality, this receiver provides unbelievable picture quality through the HDMI output and unparalleled sound calibration using the Audysey EQ set-up. Once you have this receiver dialed in, you are going to be BLOWN AWAY by it's power and clarity. All things considered, there is not another home theater receiver even remotely comparable to this one at this price point - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!

Denon AVR-1910

Written By Tim, New Orleans, LA on Thursday, June 03, 2010

Overall a good, solid unit. I've owned a few pieces of Denon in the past and have been overall happy. Unit offers a lot of flexibility and features.

PROS:
This unit offers good to better sound quality.
The HDMI upconverting works as it says it does and is adequate. It is automatic...no setup involved.
Input/Output assignment is excellent.
Zone 2 assign is a great feature and works well.

CONS:
Manual is useless. Very wordy and does not clearly explain steps for each process clearly. Doesn't explain some features at all. Found info on online forums.
Cannot use HDMI inputs to distribute audio to Zone2. You have to use analog inputs for any HDMI input to distribute to Zone2. Defeats the purpose of HDMI/ one cable connection.
Remote is too complicated. Should offer a second remote with basic functions.
On screen graphics suck. Basically, white block lettering on black background (looks like MS-DOS). Will overlay volume over video, but that's it. Denon could do much better here.

I would recommend unit, but not for a novice. Setup is not intuitive. Once unit is setup, it becomes a great home receiver with many usable features and options. Get a Harmony remote. You won't regret it.
