Our take on the Denon AVR-1911

by Marshall Chase
Denon

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

3D TV Learn more

Denon's AVR-1911 is arguably a bit of an overachiever. It provides gripping, engaging surround sound with all your movies and video games; boasts high-quality connections for high-def video; and offers lots of options for music lovers. But it doesn't stop there. Unlike other receivers, it can pass high-definition 3D video signals from a 3D Blu-ray player to your 3D TV — no mean feat, since that's nearly twice the bandwidth of a 1080p HD signal. It's a smart choice for anyone interested in 3D at home, whether you're planning to put together a 3D TV system now, or a few years down the road.

Plug your iPod® straight into the front panel — your favorite tunes will sound clearer
Quite a few receivers have a USB input, but the AVR-1911's front-panel USB is special. It has dedicated iPod support — you simply connect your iPod or iPhone using its supplied USB cable, and press Play on the receiver's remote. More goodness: Instead of the sound quality being limited by the iPod's made-for-earbuds audio circuitry, digital signals are sent straight to the Denon's high-quality DACs, so all your favorite tunes will sound better. Or plug in a USB flash memory drive, or hard disk drive loaded with your music. Switch on Denon's Compressed Audio Restorer mode to flesh out the sound of your MP3 collection. Adding an optional Denon iPod dock lets you enjoy photos and videos too.

Super sharp video and a cleaner setup
The '1911 can take each and every video signal you give it — including standard-definition signals from sources like your Wii™ or DVD player — and send everything to your TV over a single HDMI cable. This minimizes cable clutter, and also makes your system easier to use since you won't have to switch inputs on your TV. Better yet, the '1911 can upconvert all your sources to 1080p to better match your TV's high-def screen.

    Audio Features

7-Channel Amplifier: The Denon AVR-1911 features a 7-channel, equal power, discrete amplifier. Each channel is rated at 90 watts RMS. The seven amplifier channels built into the receiver are typically used for 7.1 channel surround in the main room, but there are various amplifier configurations to accommodate your home theater setup:

    • Normal: The AVR-1911 is designed to be used as a 7.1ch surround sound receiver with front left/right, center-channel, surround left/right, and surround back left/right channels along with a preamp subwoofer output.
    • Zone2: The surround back channel amplifier can also be assigned to power stereo speakers in Zone2.
    • Bi-Amp: You can configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers (if compatible).
    • Front B: A second set of front speakers can be powered by the surround back amplifier.
    • Front Height: To enjoy Dolby Pro Logic IIz you can reassign the power amp from the two surround back channels to the two front height channels for better front effects.

Minimum Signal Path Design: The simple & straight design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to a minimum.

Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of cast-iron feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.

Audyssey: This receiver is equipped with an Auto Setup and Room Equalization function to achieve the most ideal sound field for your room. The AVR-1911's Audyssey MultEQ function is designed to optimize the sound quality at each listening position in the room. The included DM-A409 microphone is used to measure test tones at each listening position (up to six positions including the main position). This measured data is then analyzed using a program to improve acoustic characteristics in the listening area; the main position is given more weight in the calculations. Audyssey EQ offers the following options:

    • MultEQ: The MultEQ function has the following adjustments:
      • Audyssey: optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics
      • Audyssey Byp. L/R: optimizes all speakers except front left and right
      • Audyssey Flat: optimize frequency response of all speakers to flat
      • Manual: adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz
      • Off: turns equalizer off
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Dynamic Volume: Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Note: You can also setup your speaker system manually using the receiver. You can adjust speaker configuration (large/small/none), bass setting (LFE/LFE+Main), low-pass crossover (80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz), speaker distance (0-60'), channel level (-12 to +12dB), and high-pass crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz)

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The unit can be set to store the most recently selected surround mode for each input, so it is automatically activated each time the particular input is chosen. The surround modes include:

    • Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital is a 5.1 multi-channel digital surround format.
    • Dolby Digital EX: Dolby Digital EX is a 6.1 multi-channel digital surround format.

    • Direct: In this mode the audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.
    • Pure Direct: Like in Direct Mode, the audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. The display and analog video circuitry are also turned off to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the signal.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby TrueHD.
    • D.Comp: Like DRC, but used with Dolby Digital and DTS sources.
    • LFE: This setting adjusts the low-frequency effects level (LFE); adjust from -10 to 0 dB.
    • Center Width: This function assigns the center channel signal to the front left and right channels for wider sound; select from 0 to 7. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
    • Center Image: This function assigns a center channel signal to the front left and right channels for wider sound; adjust from 0.0 to 1.0. This function only works in the DTS Neo:6 Music mode.
    • Panorama: This feature assigns front left and right signals to surround channels for wider sound, you can turn this feature On or Off. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
    • Dimension: This settings shifts the sound image to the front or rear to adjust playback balance; select from 0 to 6. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
    • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-300ms) to control the sound stage size. In this menu the delay time is only adjusted for the Matrix mode.
    • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
    • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
    • AFDM: Detects the source's surround back channel signal and sets the optimum surround mode automatically.
    • SB CH Out: This setting selects the playback mode for the surround back channels; there are separate settings for multi-channel and 2-channel sources.
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume of the Front Height channels to Low, Mid, or High.
    • Subwoofer: Turn the sub on/off.

Multi-Zone/Multi-Source: Denon's Multi-Zone/Multi-Source function lets you select a different audio source for listening in a second location of your home. The AVR-1911 features a Main Zone (audio and video) and Zone2 (audio only). The Main Zone offers 7.1-channel playback of your audio/video gear in your main entertainment room. Zone2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via left/right RCA audio or speaker level outputs. Only analog input sources can be played in Zone2.

Note: Zone2 features either a preamp-output or speaker terminal output so you can use this amp or a separate amp to power speakers in another room. When using the AVR-1911 to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channels. When using the receiver's preamp output terminals for the second room you need an additional amplifier to power those speakers and the main zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel.

Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB. You can also fade the sound from front to rear or vice-versa.

Restorer: This function restores compressed audio signals to pre-compression form, correcting the sense of bass and treble volume to obtain a richer sounding playback; select 64, 96, or HQ based on the compression setting of the source material.

Auto Lip Sync (Audio Delay): This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the receiver. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Volume Setting: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output. You can also specify a turn-on volume, from -80 to +18dB or Last (whatever the volume setting when the receiver was turned off).

Muting Level Adjustment: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-1911 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner and USB/Ipod.

Source Delete: If an input isn't being used, you can delete it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: All of the receiver's speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are positioned too far apart to be used with dual banana plugs.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, MultEQ, Dynamic EQ, Dynamic Volume, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.

    Video Features

HDMI ver. 1.4a: This unit has four HDMI version 1.4a inputs and one HDMI version 1.4a output. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, ARC (Audio Return Channel), Deep Color, xvYCC technology, Auto Lipsync, and HDMI control.

Audio Return Channel (ARC): If the connected TV has HDMI version 1.4 and supports ARC, the audio signal can be transferred from the TV (when its internal tuner is used) to the AVR-1911 through the HDMI cable, so a second cable isn't needed.

3D: The AVR-1911 will pass the 3D signal when connected to a 3D source (3D Blu-ray player, 3D cable box, etc) and a 3D TV.

Video Converter and Scaler: The AVR-1911 is equipped with a flexible video switching system that converts incoming analog video signals so only one video connection is required from the receiver to the TV. The 480i/480p (SD-quality) video signals of DVD programs and other materials input through receiver are scaled to 1080p signals, and output through the unit's HDMI monitor port to your HDTV. The scaler can be turned off if you prefer. The scaler can also be applied to just analog input signals, or analog and HDMI.

Component Video Input: The component video input (single) is assignable to any of the sources (other than Tuner, USB/iPod, and CD).

On-Screen Display (OSD): An OSD menu can be displayed on your television for easy system setup. The OSD is sent through the receiver's HDMI and composite video monitor outputs.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings; Bright, Dim, Dark and Off.

    Tuner Functions

HD Radio Tuner: The AVR-1911 features a built-in HD AM/FM tuner. HD radio stations offer higher sound quality than conventional FM/AM broadcasts. HD FM stations offer approximately CD quality sound while HD AM sounds like analog FM stereo. It is also possible to receive data services and select broadcasts from among up to eight multicast programs. In addition, the AVR-1911 receives standard analog AM/FM broadcasts. You can store up to 56 radio stations presets (8 stations each in 7 separate banks). You can name each preset with an 8 character ID.

    USB/iPod Functions

USB Terminal: A USB memory device can be connected to the USB type-A terminal located on the front panel, allowing you to play music files through the receiver. Compatible formats include MP3 (32-320kbps), WMA (48-192kbps), and AAC (16-320kbps).

iPod Compatibility: Using a USB to iPod Dock cable plugged into the front panel USB port, music can be played directly from an iPod, bypassing the iPod's D/A converter. The iPod is controlled by the receiver's remote; text and elapsed time appear on the AVR-1911's display and on the connected video monitor. Video and still photos (as well as music) can be played from an iPod using an optional ASD-11RK iPod dock. Using the dock cable to connect directly, iPod compatibility is as follows (as of July 2010):

    Wow !! Great sound

Watched the video review on cnet.com and pretty much agree with their review. The on screen setup reminds me of a TV from the 70's or one of the first computer games. Very basic block lettering and limited. There are not all the bells and whistles that some of the other models have, but the sound is overwhelming!!. I replaced an older panasonic unit and my Bose speakers just pop with the Denon. I can't say its all the Denon as i replace the TV and blue ray player with top of the line Panasonics, but the home theater experience is absolutely incredible now!!

Great sound and easy set up. The problem I have is with how zone 2 works. You have to control zone 2 completely separate from the main zone. You have to turn it on/off separately. If you have zone 2 on and forget to turn it off when you turn off zone 1 zone 2 will stay on. You cannot set the three easy buttons to turn zone 2 on also. Just too much hassel to try to control zone 2.

May want to order with banana plugs

Written By Matt, New Mexico on Thursday, July 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

you may want to get some banana plugs to make it easy to plug in speaker wire on back side of receiver. it is kind of a pain but not a huge deal. So far the unit works well. It sure beats the sound coming out of my plasma tv speakers. Seems to be enough power for my room. It took some tinkering to figure out how to make sure the receiver was playing the correct sound configuration from each individual DVD being played. many DVDs play DOLBY, but some are recorded/or mixed in DTS (says on DVD cover). so i was finally able to get avatar to play the way it was intended. So far i am happy with the unit. Thanks Crutchfield.

Great upgrade from my 10 year old Yamaha receiver. Speaker set up was very easy using included mic.

System sounds amazing even with the same speakers.

Upconvert Feature seems to improve SD pictures, but Brighthouse Cable is so bad its tough to tell.

Great receiver at a great price. Highly recommended.

I replaced my old Denon AVR2802 with this new 1911. Very pleased with this unit! I love the fact that with the HDMI inputs, I came away with less cables to deal with. Customer support at Crutchfield was invaluable as I had to call a couple of time to figure out some simple remedies with setting up the receiver. Thanks Crutchfield!

I have had the AVR1911 for a few weeks now and am very happy with it. I did a lot a research on different receivers and for the money you can not beat the 1911! It has all the features I need! The other higher dollar models only added features like networking and such. I already had that via other devices so why buy it twice? The auto setup for the speakers works very good. Don't judge the sound until you do this step!

    Denon AVR-1911

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i liked a lot of the features that were advertised. i like the 2 zone option. but, i learned that with a 6.1 system (or a 7.1), you could not use the second zone unless you had a separate stereo amp. if you want 2 zones, then you can only have a 5.1 for the main zone and then you can hook up 2 speakers for the 2nd zone. there is not a separate speaker terminal for zone 2, you end up stealing it from the surround back terminals. here is the main issue: when i set up this receiver, the menu from the receiver would not show on my TV. it had to be sent back for a replacement. the replacement did not have the menu issue, but when i used the composite on the front, only the video would show. no sound. i tried multiple inputs for this composite, ie- camcorder, dvd player, same problem! i was advised that it had to be sent back again! seems like a lot if issues with this denon model. because it gave me so many problems so early on, i opted to return it and not replace it with another denon avr 1911. the only good thing i can say is that the 6.1 system i had did sound pretty good.

Best bang for your home theater buck

Written By mcaaron, Lawrence, KS on Tuesday, June 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first stand-alone receiver purchase. I was shopping for a mid-range receiver that boasted excellent sound quality. According to CNET this unit took the prize. Hard to beat the sale price Crutchfield is running without buying a used or gray market item.

Running this receiver through a set of Klipsch Quintet SL speakers and I am blown away. It took longer than expected to run the setup program with the included mic but it was a piece of cake.

For me the 4 HDMI inputs are more than enough. I have my PS3 for blu-ray and gaming, and my cable box for television. My only complaint is that there isn't an HDMI input on the front panel for hooking up my laptop, but that is easy to overcome by keeping a wire plugged in to the back and just concealing it in the entertainment center until I need it.

If you are on the fence, just climb down and buy this receiver. You will not be disappointed.

Also this was my first purchase from Crutchfield. Their service is amazing. Fast shipping, great price, cable labels ROCK.

    Denon AVR-1911

Written By Bmart409, Laurel, MD on Monday, June 13, 2011

If you have a Samsung HD TV this is not the receiver for you. I have an existing pioneer receiver that is 7+yr old and works great but it doesn't have ability to play a different audio source on zone 2. That's what drew me to this Denon. That feature works great and the sound is very good. However, I normally will listen to a different audio source than what I'm watching on TV and that feature does not work well with a Samsung TV. The TV will not recognize the video feed and when it does it isn't a clear 1080p picture that I experienced prior to running all video signals through the receiver. If it had more optical digital inputs I could have worked around it but it doesn't. Again the sound was very good but not much better than my VSX 811 so it wasn't worth keeping.

Pros: Good clean sound, On Screen set up was surprisingly easy, Multi-zone are great

Cons: Didn't work with TV, On screen Display is nothing special, needs more optical digital inputs, picture could have been clearer

One word... awesome! Does everything it says. Much easier to set-up and use than you'd think by it's 80+ page instruction guide. Great sound. Multiroom use is near intuitive. Running 5.1 in family room and 3 rooms of stereo off the rear surround speaker output through my Niles Speaker Control box. Been looking on and off for a receiver for a year and don't believe I could have made a better choice.

    Complicated...

Written By CGS, PR on Thursday, June 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'd say it is a solid 4 star device for this price, if I'd paid the original cost though... I'd be giving it 3 or less stars and probably would have returned it.

The number of RCA/Video inputs leave a little to be desired, however in my case there were enough of them to connect all my non-HDMI devices.

"Pass-through" is a nice feature, I've read a comment or two saying theirs didn't work but I haven't had that problem, maybe it has to do with the receiver being set to the correct device even though it is turned off.

The "Power-On by HDMI" is a good idea for a feature... but for me it failed in application, simply turning itself on would be great, but it automatically tunes to the last device that is turned on, potentially switching itself to the wrong device, requiring you to grab the remote to correct, defeating the purpose of the feature.

The Users Manual is an issue, the best description I could of it would be "complicated", I mean everything is in there, but it isn't intuitive, you will find yourself flipping back and forth a lot.

Being controlled by another remote... I set mine up to be controlled by my Cable/Satelite remote, something in the signal sent to the receiver from the Cable remote caused all audio output from the receiver to cease for whatever device it is tuned to.

Best receiver I have owned to date

Written By DavidL, Perryville, KY on Monday, June 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The main two things that influenced my buying the AVR-1911 where the Denon name and the ability to send tunes to a second zone. After a bit of confusion about whether or not this receiver can handle two zones without adding another amp, I am happy to anounce it works just fine. As long as you only need 5.1 surround in your main listening area, the unit takes the remaining two channels to zone two (for me it is outside on the deck). It is a liitle bit of a pain that only analog sources can be used in zone two (no apple tv on the deck for me), but I have found that we use it most of the time with the built in FM tuner or by plugging an ipod right into the front of the unit. The graphical interface is rather sad, but I bought it to listen to and not to look at the menus. Sound quality is amazing which is what I expected from the Denon name and there are plenty of options and tweeks for those who like to play. I would definately buy this item again and I must say that buying from Crutchfield has always given me confidence that I am buying quality products from people who know how to use them.

This Denon receiver was simple to setup and the options available fit all of today's needs with HDMI components. The only thing I could not figure out was how to run stereo sound to a separate zone speaker, but I called back and Rudy helped me and told me that I needed a separate set of RCA audio cables from my cable box to the receiver to complete the job. I'm totally satisfied with this receiver in that you can listen to sound in one area of the house or two areas simultaneously. Works great when on a late evening my wife wants to nap on the couch and I can sit in another room and still watch and listen to the TV without the family speakers turned up.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was skeptical at first, but very pleased with the overall purchase. Honestly, still trying to figure out all of the features. I'm an old school NAD user and was pleased with this unit. Ordered it, received it in 3 days, well packaged, included line labels (very helpful when your switching out old gear) and simply impressed with the customer service. Your not going to get that from the other big box locations. Even received a Thank You card from the individual who worked with me on the purchase. Very unexpected and appreciated. Sure, there are other receivers with more feature, but for an old school audio guy, this unit works great and for the price point, it is well worth the purchase. Only drawback...the on-screen text during your setup/changes you get broadcasted on your tv will look like something from an old Atari game, but honestly, who cares...your after the audio experience and this will deliver and Crutchfield delivers customer service. Service after the sale...that is really what you want and need.

Same video encoder as the high end Denon models, just not as feature and
input's rich as the more expensive top end models. The polk RTi speakers 5.1
setup I have - sounds great.

I work from home so the HD-radio is a very nice plus for this price range. I have
my computer hooked up to the aux input so not having the Network port on this
model was not a negative for me.

Solid Value from a brand name....

I was running an older Sony Dolby Digital amp with my Blu-ray player, and I
THOUGHT I was hearing it all. I WAS SOOOOO WRONG!!! This Denon rocks
the joint like I never knew was possible. Each channel is so clean, it literally
had me looking around the room tracking each sound. I was considering
buying a new center channel, but that is no longer needed. I can actually HEAR
the dialog now. This amp kicks butt!!!! If you are running with something that is

Sound quality significantly im proved from my ten -year old Sony.

Has taken quite a while to become familiar with all the options for hook up and use.
    Only unresolved issues include:

Not able to use the remote to control other system units (Cisco DVR, Panasonic
Blue Ray,, Sony DVD/CD) except ON/OFF... not big issue since I use Logitech
programmable remote. All seem to accept the code but no other control.

Crutchfield shipping was as advertised two day delivery even though weather
conditions in the South slowed other deliveries.

Very pleased with Dealer and Product

Set up appeared to be pretty easy. I see what folks say about the small letters on the display. It took a while to figure out how to get the menu on my TV screen. It didn't seem to work at first. But now it does. It is just a matter of listening to lots of audio and making sure all the settings are the best they can be. I had a Yamaha. Several years old. I am not blown away by this device for the price. But then, I didn't pay $1,000 for it either. So I would recommend it for the price. What are you going to do when new audio formats keep coming out. Sooner or later you have to upgrade.

    Amazing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned a few nice a/v receivers over the past 18 years and when my Sony
ES gave out, I was looking for a new one. Unfortunately, I didn't have the usual
$1000 to drop on a new receiver like I had in the past. I was really worried that I
was going to have to compromise on sound and features. I couldn't
have been more wrong. This is an AMAZING receiver! The sound is absolutely
phenomenal. The features are incredible. I love the mic feature
that "measures" (via audessy) your room for optimum sound. Once you go thru
the setup, the room seems absolutely FULL of sound wherever you sit. The
onscreen (via your tv) menu is easy to use. Although the telephone book sized
instruction manual can seem a bit daunting, it is really easy to follow and set
this unit up. There are no words that can possibly describe how good the
sound is. You have to experience it. You will hear things that you have never
heard in your favorite movies. The same goes with cd's. Absolutely amazing.
It makes my 12 year old Polks sound like brand new speakers, wanting to
show me sounds i've been missing out on. I have already recommended it to
several friends and family. I feel like I hit the lottery with this unit. It is that good.

    Worth the wait

I bought this Amp after seeing the reviews. After a few hours of learning how to program the units built in EQ I can honestly say that this is the best sounding 7.1 unit I have ever heard. I would recomend that you not use the Auto Setup on this unit due to the fact that it had set the EQ to be too flat. After setting up the "Manual EQ" and being able to fine tune the crossover the sound was amazing. The remote was smart enough to be able to control the Directv box without needing to put a code in. It does a great job as a "Universal" remote. Bottom line: For this price, you will not find a better 7.1 Amp.

    Denon AVR-1911 by Boyd

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am extremely happy with the Denon AVR-1911. This receiver replaced a Sony DA
2400-ES receiver, which cost exactly twice as much as the Denon. My wife, who is
not a techie, commented several times that the TV picture was much sharper and
brighter with the Denon receiver. Therefore, I have no doubt that the Denon
does a much better job of upconverting the satellite receiver HD signal than the
    Sony did.

    Confusing Technology

Written By Bob N, Morris, Ill on Monday, April 25, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Haven't bought a receiver in ten years. Since I recently purchased a new TV &
Blu Ray, I quickly realized that the old Yamaha, which I was very happy with,
was not compatible with the new electronics. Long story short, you can take all
this HDMI stuff & make it go away. Never read more about incompatabilities, hand
shakes etc. Sounds like the whole industry has issues, in particular the cable &
sat. boxes you are given. They don't seem to work with this receiver. I guess
it's that handshake thing between the two products.
Bottom line: Thank God for the tech support from Crutchfield. Must have called 5
times for help & they were all good, especially Brent.
The receiver is confusing, too much nonsense on it, but I guess it's OK.
You can't run everything through the receiver if you just want your TV speakers
on at times when your just watching news or something. Have to run a separate
hook up directly from the TV to the cable box. I'll take that back. You can if
your cable box is compatible with this receiver. Mine was not. And don't forget
about this little setting you have to change to make it work. You would never
    find it without assistance.
Sounds fine. I'm sure all new AV receivers sound good.

    Excellant Sound!!!

Written By Jeff B, Humble TX on Thursday, April 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the Denon 1911 3 months ago and wanted some time before giving a review,
so here it goes! If you're looking for exceptional sound this is the unit!
I've owned Onkyo, and Yamaha over the years and the Denon is clearly the better
for pure sound reproduction. Its obvious Denon is more concerned about the
quality of sound which is most important and not so concerned with how many
connection points to old equipment is on the back panel. I'm replacing an Onkyo
tx-sr 606 which I loved and my second Onkyo overall but when I plugged in the
Denon with the same speakers, I couldn't believe the difference was so
noticeable! I even hooked the Onkyo back up to be sure of what I was hearing.
The Onkyo is also rated at 100W but the Denon at 90 seems more powerful across
all channels and drives my speakers perfectly. The Audyssey EQ on the Denon
seems to be better as well, can't say how are why but it is. This is not
intended to be a knock on Onkyo at all, they make a great product that has
served me well for 15 years, just being honest with the evaluation.
Crutchfield crew was very helpful pre sale and so too was the folks at Denon
after the sale with questions on Bi amping the speakers. BTW Bi amping the
speakers made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in sound! Don't waste your time or money
on speaker wires! Thought I would mention that since that seems to be a highly
    debated subject.

    HOLY SH-NIKES BATMAN

Written By E Iron, Rochester, NY on Thursday, April 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I FINALLY HAVE THE SURROUND SOUND THAT I USED TO CLAIM I HAD IN THE PAST.
I didn't spend $10,000 on my speakers or projector - irregardless this receiver
works much better, and in harmony, with my existing components compared to my
old Sony STR receiver. My setup consists of: Some decent Boston Acoustics for
Fronts, Center, and the Subwoofer. Two "Craigslist special" Sony's for the rear
speakers. A newer Sony Blu-Ray player. An Optoma HD-20 Projector. An Elite
screen 4:3 ratio (even though I typically broadcast in 16:9)

Have you ever watched a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and you were STRAINING to hear the
    dialogue so you
turned up the volume to 9 or 10? Then, an explosion happens in the movie, and
you have to run upstairs to calm your kid down because they just freaked out so
bad they messed their diaper? If so, this is the receiver for you. My old Sony
didn't support DTS or Dolby True HD, OR HDMI inputs for that matter. This thing
supports everything I've thrown at it with ease. Most importantly however, it
softens the explosions if you ask it to, and increases the quiet dialogue scenes
so they are reasonably audible. One feature that isn't entirely clear is the
iPod Touch hookup. You don't need a special docking station. Your regular USB
cable that came with the iPod works just fine. When I connect it, I see the
title or name of the song on my projector's screen and I can even browse and
control the upcoming songs/albums with the receiver's remote control.

First off Crutchfield kills the competition when it comes to pricing!! This Denon
AVR-1911 is priced from $499.99 up to $699.99 at some other retailers. I
bought this receiver for $399.99 w/ 200.00 instant rebate from Crutchfield!!

I paired my reciever with some Klipsch stand alone speakers as well as a
center speaker and inceling speakers. The sound is simply off the chain!! I
couldn't have asked for anything better!

I have always enjoyed the quality of Denon over the years. This was no
exception and with the special price and free shipping is a bargain. Having
just purchase a new flat screen I needed to upgrade my receiver to one that
offered HDMI hookups. I was looking at more expensive receivers but in talking
with the consultant at Crutchfield by phone, she recommended the Denon as a
better unit and better value. She was right. Great sound, easy controls and
easy to hook up. I would highly recommend this unit.

    Another good Deenon experience

Written By Gary, St. Leonard, Md on Sunday, April 10, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the AVR-1911 when I was shopping for a new AV receiver. I had an older
Denon receiver and had never had any trouble with it, but all of my later
equipment was set up for HDMI, and the old receiver was not equipped for that.
The shipping (one day) was free, and I had the new receiver up and running in
about 15 minutes. The 1911 has many more features than the old one, so the
settings are more complex but the unit was simpler to hook up. With some
patience, fine tuning the setup had everything working in an hour. I am still
tweaking the finer audio settings, and it just keeps getting better. Put a $200
savings on top of that and it does not get much better!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched receivers for over two years before purchasing this one and am
glad I did. It is everything I need and much more. The sound is wonderful and
the Auddyssey features are great. Set up was pretty staight forward while the
owners manual leaves a little to be desired but not terrible by any means and
some letters on the remote are hard to see. This reciever has soo many
options it takes a little while to learn everything but it allows you to taylor it to
your own needs. I also had a terrible experience with another vender while
attempting to purchase reciever. They also would not honor the factory
warranty. Crutchfield provided a personal advisor who was very thorough
making sure to inform me of everything up front so there would be no surprizes
and recieve what I expected with a full warranty.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second Denon receiver I have owned and the sound quality of their
receivers always impresses. It looks great, sounds better, and for the price is
hard to beat. I use it in a bedroom so the power is more than adequate even
though it is running a B&W system which are not that efficient. The menu could
be easier to use but overall not that bad. If you've owned a Denon receiver in
the past set up should be no problem. My only complaint would be using the
mic to set up your system. After performing the setup I would have never used
it once I saw how it set my speakers. I just went back and did it manually. I
would recommend to anybody set it up yourself, don't use it unless you just
have no idea how. It is a small complaint, this receiver has exceeded all
    expectations.

If first impressions are lasting then this unit is going to impress for a long time.
Having owned a Denon for 10 years I decided to upgrade to an HDMI A/V
Receiver and I'm simply blown away. I looked at Yamaha and Onkyo but the
sound quality from this Receiver is leaps above the rest. Setup was a
breeze..10 mins tops. Some complain about the text based menu...not even
an issue in my opinion, in fact I find it far more straight forward and easier then
a GUI interface. However if you are looking for a receiver that is going to blow
you away with the sound quality, this is it!! I'm impressed! Well done Denon!!

Great sound!! Like night and day between the AVR 1911 and my old Pioneer receiver. The automatic sound calibration using the Audyssey mic was a breeze. My only dislikes are that the HDMI pass through only works with the receiver on and the on screen display. Very cheap and 1980's looking. Overall it is a great receiver at a great price. I have just switched over to Denon.

    Great Entry Level Receiver

Written By JimD, Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, March 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I shopped for a long time and I considered a lot of brands when I recently
purchased a new AV receiver. I had an older Sony AV receiver that I never really
like and that was on its way out, so it was time to upgrade.

I am really happy with the Denon AVR 1911, especially for the price. The Audessy
setup seemed to work very well for me. I listened to all of my sources both before
and after running it and it definitely made a nice improvement in sound quality. The
sound is excellent when listening to CDs or my iPod and I think the basic iPod
interface is fine. It is not as easy as navigating the iPod itself, but then almost no
other interface is, including the high end navigation units in my car and truck.

What is really impressive is the improvement in sound quality when watching a
DVD or my DVR. I didn't change anything but the receiver and the sound is much,
much better. I now have better surround effects and the clearest voice that I have
ever had with my current system. We watched one show in a series with the Sony
and then the next with the Denon. I couldn't understand about 30% of the dialog
using the Sony and 100% was clear with the Denon.

I highly recommend this receiver, and I don't even have any serious issues to
    report at this point.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's the end of the season and the new stuff will be out soon, so buy this AVR now!!
At the current price point you can't beat what you get for the money!
Great for the small set-up where exceptional sound is a requirement. And I don't
mean "small" as in room, this Denon has plenty of power for mid to moderately
    large rooms.
I'll echo what others have said about the included documentation and realize it
could be daunting to those just learning their way around audio equipment. But
if you take it slow, and exploit all available resources, like the excellent
support staff at Crutchfield, or the aforementioned "Batpig's Denon On-Line
Guide", you'll definitely be rewarded with some of the best sound $400, or even
    three times that, can buy.

A myriad of features to numerous to list add to the value of this unit. From the
excellent Audyssey Auto Calibration for superb audio to the Anchor Bay
Technologies 1030 chip with HD up-scaling. Any source you connect can be
up-scaled all the way to 1080p.
I really like having the ability to have multiple EQ settings for each source.
Considering the multiple-use components we all have in our systems now it comes
in handy. I can use the Audyssey calibrated settings when I watch a Bluray
through the PS3, but my own settings when I'm plying a game or listening to music.
I could gush all night, but my first line really summed it up as far as I'm
    concerned.
My Thanks to Denon and Crutchfield! Cheers!

    Denon AVR-1911

Written By Matthew, Kansas City, MO on Saturday, March 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic upgrade over my old receiver, but there are a few weak points - mostly
due to the on-screen display, which isn't very good, but is fairly necessary to set
    this unit up.
Basically, no user-interface design was put into the on-screen display and it just
comes up with poorly formatted (and ugly) text. It took a while for me to figure out
that programming to remote had NOTHING to do with the receiver's menu option
for it - essentially, it was just a listing of codes to program into the remote and
very poorly written instructions - all of which could have simply been in the user's
    manual.
Removing unused input options from the on-screen display does not reorder the
remaining ones well and the iPod integration is kind of a joke.

However, if you ignore those issues, the receiver itself does perform admirably
for audio output and the switching and up-converting of video inputs.

Sound is Great...Owners Manual is NOT!

Written By John B, Long Island, NY on Monday, March 21, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver arrived to me 10 years after I purchased my first AVR, which finally died on me after a blackout hit my home. My brother's recommendation as well as the reviews in Crutchfield lead me to this product as my next AVR. After receiving the item, I was able to set it up with little or no trouble and began enjoying the sound(s) Denon audio products provide. After the first evening however, I noticed all of the surround channell settings for my TV, BluRay and Wii were going back to ZERO's every time I would switch them using the Quick Select Functions on the remote. Only after an hour plus on the phone with TWO Cruthfield support specialist's was I able to identify how these settings are to be saved. The owners manual was either unclear or disregarded this step completely. Since then I have enjoyed hours of unending sounds coming from all my different sources. My BluRay sounds amazing and the movies in my family room can compete with any movie theatre around. Thank you Crutchfield for your support specialists, without them this AVR may have ended up back on your shelves!

    The 1911 Rocks !!!

Written By Dick, Renton, Washington on Friday, March 18, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I have to say the unit is incredible....from the initial automatic EQ of the speakers to the actual performance playing movies or music. I stream much of our entertainment from Netflix or Pandora through some older Boze 501 and 301 speakers, a Polk subwoofer and a Polk center speaker. All are crystal clear !! I especially like the Multi Stereo channel mode with some of the jazz stations from Pandora. The 1911 does a great job of frequency separation and total surround sound during streamed movies. I recommed the unit for anyone who wants to upgrade an older system or wants to start out without stress on the pocketbook !!!

Jury is still out; sound is great, get no off-air radio reception (may need an
outside antenna); won't handle my dvd player or vcr (works great with HDMI
connections, not well with RGB+20-channel audio)

    Great Sound and features

Written By 3rd Receiver in 30 years, Davenport, IA on Saturday, March 12, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Since this is only my third receiver in 30 years, I do not consider myself an audiophile expert by any means. I have purchased from Crutchfield before, so I knew I wouldn't have any regrets there. I decided on this model based on user and expert reviews on the internet as well as price and features. The sound is very clean which is the main reason for buying a new receiver.

If you are looking for a new receiver, I highly recommend getting one with the Audyssey microphone setup like this. I also like the HD radio, USB connectivity for Ipod or Iphone, and on screen display.

On the minus side and the reasons for only four stars instead of five. My bare speaker wires were a somewhat challenging for me to connect and I don't think much of the remote control. Why would you have or want a separate power button for on and another button for off? The remote is not a learning remote, so it may not program all devices. My intent is to buy a Logitech Harmony remote which will hopefully resolve this issue and my use of multiple remotes.

I noticed that at least one of the other reviews posted on this receiver complained about the reception of the radio stations. It doesn't say it in the AVR 1911 manual, but you are suppose to place the FM antenna horizontally not vertically. This will make a big difference in your radio station reception.

    Denon AVR-1911

Written By Tom and Karen, Mayville, NY on Friday, March 11, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with this Denon AVR-1911. Prior to purchase, my husband did alot of research and wanted a nice mid rate unit - We had previously owned another Denon AVR which was outdated and probably 15 years old - It worked perfectly with our new Samsung 46" tv, sony blue ray dvd and now we have one logitec remote to operate everything! It's super great for me, because I'm a klutz at anything electronic. My husband had it set up and connected to our old speakers very quickly. The shipping was on time and the packaging was
adequate. Best part of the whole thing was the price - we would have spent $200 more locally if they had it in stock when we were there. So with the savings, thus the universal remote! Thank you Crutchfield - when the need arises, you will certainly be the first place we go. Very happy people.

    Schweeeeeet AVR!!

Pulled the trigger on the Denon AVR-1911. My new video system includes DirecTV
DVR, Sony BluRay, and an AppleTV. Everything I have has HDMI connections and I
have not experienced any problems with any equipment. The lipsync did not
automatically correct for both bluray and the DirecTV, but I have made manual
adjustments for the corrective timing with no further problems. The number of
cables heading up to my 55" is now only 1! With the 1911 low intensity tv is an
option with the Denon operating on standby power the video signal passes from
sat set-top box to the 55".

The set up out of the box was pretty straight forward. The manual is about as
close to Chinese as Denon could make it. I did not like the manual, but don't
confuse that with a dislike for the equipment.

The audyssey MultiEQ was very helpful and did the heavy lifting for the set up.
I am using the Polk tsi300's for fronts, cs10 center, psw111 sub in a 3.1
configuration. The 300's are set up as bi-amps. The 1911 puts out plenty of
power and I'll get the plug pulled by my spouse if I try to crank it too much.

Denon makes a great product. I was deciding between the AVR-791 and the
AVR-1911, after extensive research I went with the AVR-1911 and couldn't have
been happier. Great reciever. Cheers. Jamaica Mon!!

Disappointed with the auto setup with mike. But overall sounds great when manually setup.
Radio reception could be better too.

    No better at this price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did some research before choosing Denon, had a Sony previously so I was
leaning that way. One thing that swayed me was an excellent internet post, see
'Denon FADQ'. The amp delvrs all great stuff descr. there including the SOTA
Audyssey processing. One feature I wanted was advanced dynamic range control to
help tame the earsplitting content newer cinema soundtrack, as well as a good
"night mode". The Audyssey Dyn. Vol. does a great job with no pumping effect
like the old analog technology, e.g. DBX, and is totally adjustable with 4
    operating. modes.

I was concerned with being restricted in control as some of these new processing
tech. seem to be limited that regard. I read customer complaints about not
being able to adjust the sound and the answer often comes back: that's how it's
supposed to sound, you're just not used it. Not all source material is ideal
and heck I'm paying for the thing so I should be able to adjust it as I want.
The Denon has NO such prob. There is a trim for every input and an adjustable
ref. level on the Aud. Dyn. EQ which will back off the amount of proc. it does,
    as described in the FADQ.

Another feature for me was -20 db mute, having gotten used to that with the
Sony. Denon seems to be one of the few others to offer it, not sure all new
Sonys even have it. A flaw with my old Sony was a hyper-sensitive volume ctrl,
hard to adjust at low vol. The Denon has no such problem.

Delivers on functions and sound, but...

Written By Jeff P, Honolulu on Monday, November 22, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver has delivered on almost all of the features I was looking for (HDMI/3D input
and pass through, iPod connection, and low complexity.) The power is sufficient for my
room (16'X22') and the set-up with the provided Audessey microphone is simple.
The quick select feature is great, which allows you to push just one button to get the
receiver settings to where they need to be to watch TV or BluRay.
I have had the receiver for four months. Twice I have had to "reset" the receiver's
microprocessor because of a spurious glitch: the audio would not function with the input
from the TV cable box. After a master reset, all previous settings are lost, and you must
then run through the whole Audessey set up again (a ½ hr process). Very frustrating!
The "on-screen" display does not overlay the menu on the TV picture, rather, it just
shows the menu options of the receiver on a black TV screen.
The HDMI pass-through does not function as advertised-if your TV has Anynet+
capability (Samsung TV). If your TV is turned off, then back on, the pass through no
    longer works. Very frustrating!
Finally, when an iPod is connected, the menu to control it is rudimentary, not user
friendly. It takes a lot of button pushing to get to the playlist or artist you seek.
All in all, the sound quality is exceptional and outweighs the user interface concerns
mentioned above. But when you pay $599 for a receiver, you expect everything to work
    smoothly and seamlessly.
