hire someone
Written By tony, epping, nh on Tuesday, February 03, 2009

the receiver came highly recommended by experts who also knew my needs and advised no need for a step up... but even with experts to install it took hours in part due to lack of good documentation... we echo the comment of others on finding volume adjustment on center channel as one example... on the other hand it did readily catch that the connections were out of phase on one of the side speakers (due to wiring mixup in walls that would not have been otherwise found) ... more functional manual would get us to perfect for me

Great receiver
Written By Tom, NW, Arkansas on Saturday, January 17, 2009

I am very pleased with the AVR-2309CI. I am running Polk RTi A7 fronts, CSi A6 center, RTi A1 bookshelf surrounds, and a Polk 1200 watt sub. My
inputs are all HDMI and include a PS3, a HDDVD, A HD cable box, and I have one HDMI port open for expansion. My front speakers are rated for up to 300 watts with a 89dB sensitivity and this 100 watt per channel X7 receiver does a fine job of pushing them. My past receivers have included one Yamaha and two Sonys. Denon seems to definately be a step up the scale. I am not a tech professional and I did not find the set up to be complex at all. I just read the directions. This receiver definately brought performance improvement to my home theater system. If you need a 100 watt per channel X 7 receiver with 4 HDMI inputs and cool new features like 3 mode night listening and blended multi position auto calibration, this is a great way to go and a great performance value.

A dinosaur from the 80s....
Written By Emin, Austin TX on Friday, December 19, 2008

I am a tech professional but nothing could have prepared me for the lameness of this device. The on screen menus make zero or no sense and the graphics on them look like they just came out of a first generation Sinclair gaming console from the 80s.

The manual was clearly not written by a native English speaking person and it shows. It is disorganized and makes little to no sense....

I understand that this is a complex piece of equipment that can do a lot of things but that's why we have technical writers writing these manuals and not whomever wrote this manual.

I found the device to be running hot, and it smelled like burnt plastic -- this is before I put it into the cabinet.

I am sure this is a wonderful device that does things to your speakers nothing can but if two tech professionals can not figure out what it does, how it does it and how to configure it in 3 hours I am not sure what use all this functionality will be good for....

Maybe Denon ought to take a cue from the Sony products and manuals.

If you're an audiophile let me not stop you, if you're a person that needs a simple plug and play receiver, STAY AWAY...

Good sound/image, many features, complex setup
Written By Jakob, Fremont, CA on Saturday, October 25, 2008

I am very satisfied with this product and would gladly buy another when the time comes and I need whatever is the next thing they add. Once it's set up, it is pretty simple to operate and produces great sound and clean video.

Why then 4 stars instead of 5: overly complex user experience for the set-up. The on-screen display looks like an Apple II design from 1980, and is about as hard to navigate.

The manual is not much help. Poorly written and mainly structured in the old-fashioned style of documenting each menu option (and not even explaining it that well, at that), without helping users find their way around the system. If you already know how it works, then the manual might be fine, but then you wouldn't need it, would you?

I spent literally more than an hour with the manual trying to track down how to increase the sound level from the center channel. (And I needed the manual, because there's no way anybody would discover the solution from browsing the menus.)

Several other tweaks I needed were also overly complex to achieve.

The box did have the features, it was "just" a matter of tracking them down :-(

Denon AVR-2309CI
Written By Brian, Massachusetts on Sunday, October 12, 2008

Great sound and lots of audio and video connections. Easy audio set up with auto set-up feature. User manual and on screen navigation are not intuitive, but once the system is set up, it performs great. This is my 3rd Denon receiver and I wouldn't buy anything else.
