Audio Features

5-Channel Amplifier: The Denon AVR-391 features a 5-channel, equal power, discrete amplifier; each channel is rated at 75 watts RMS. Stereo preamp outputs for the surround back channels allow you to add an amplifier to take advantage of 6.1 and 7.1 channel formats.

Minimum Signal Path Design: The simple & straight design concept has been thoroughly implemented in the signal paths to contribute to clean audio and video playback. Signal paths are as short as possible to keep signal degradation in the audio and video circuitry to a minimum.

Direct Mechanical Ground Construction: Vibration-resistant construction has been used to suppress the adverse influences of vibration on sound quality. The power transformers, a source of vibration, have been securely mounted on the high rigid bottom chassis. Direct mounting of the feet to the radiator in near proximity to each other serves to suppress mutual vibration with the power transformers and other sources of vibration.

Surround Modes: This receiver incorporates a wide variety of surround modes to bring you maximum enjoyment from your audio and video software. The unit can be set to store the most recently selected surround mode for each input, so it is automatically activated each time the particular input is chosen. The surround modes include:

  • Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital is a 5.1 multi-channel digital surround format.
  • Dolby Digital EX: Dolby Digital EX is a 6.1 multi-channel digital surround format.
  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension of Dolby Digital; the coding technology supports 7.1 discrete channels and has a higher bit rate.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS Digital Surround: DTS Digital Surround is a 5.1 multi-channel digital surround sound format used for both commercial/theatrical and consumer grade applications.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is an improved version of the conventional DTS, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 signal formats that is compatible with sampling frequencies of 48 or 96 kHz and up to 7.1-channels of discrete digital sound. High data bit rate performance provides high quality sound.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless audio format compatible with up to 96 kHz and up to 7.1-channels. The lossless audio coding technology faithfully reproduces the sound of the studio master.
  • DTS-ES Extended Surround: DTS-ES features two 6.1 multi-channel formats:
    • DTS-ES Discrete 6.1: DTS-ES Discrete 6.1-channel is a 6.1-channel discrete digital audio format adding a surround back channel to the DTS digital surround sound.
    • DTS-ES Matrix 6.1: DTS-ES Matrix 6.1-channel is a discrete 5.1 channel digital audio format inserting a surround back channel to the DTS surround sound through matrix encoding.
  • DTS Express: DTS Express is an audio format supporting low bit rates (maximum 5.1-channels, 24 to 256 kbps)
  • DTS 96/24: DTS 96/24 is a digital audio format enabling high sound quality playback in 5.1-channels with a sampling frequency of 96 kHz and 24 bit quantization of DVD-video.
  • DTS Neo:6 Surround: DTS Neo:6 is a matrix decoding technology for achieving 6.1-channel surround playback with 2-channel sources. You can choose from two DTS Neo: 6 Surround formats - Neo: 6 Cinema and Neo: 6 Music.
  • Dolby Pro Logic: Center and mono surround information is matrixed into two stereo channels. When reproduced, audio is decoded and output in 4 channel surround sound.
  • Dolby Pro Logic II: Dolby Pro Logic II technology processes any high quality stereo (two-channel) movie and music audio into five playback channels of full-bandwidth surround sound. A matrix surround decoding technology, Dolby Pro Logic II detects the directional cues that occur naturally in stereo content and uses these elements to create a five-channel surround sound playback experience. You can choose from Cinema, Music, or Game formats. You can also choose Dolby Pro Logic (the earlier 4-channel mode).
  • Dolby Pro Logic IIx: Pro Logic IIx expands any existing stereo- or 5.1-channel audio for a 6.1- or 7.1- channel playback, creating a seamless, natural surround soundfield that immerses you in the entertainment experience. You can choose from the following Dolby Pro Logic IIx formats - Cinema, Music, or Game.
  • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.
  • Multi Channel Stereo: Stereo sound is played from all speakers.
  • Stereo: This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
  • Direct: In this mode the audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

  • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby TrueHD.
  • D.Comp: Like DRC, but used with Dolby Digital and DTS sources.
  • LFE: This setting adjusts the low-frequency effects level (LFE); adjust from -10 to 0 dB.
  • Center Width: This function assigns the center channel signal to the front left and right channels for wider sound; select from 0 to 7. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
  • Center Image: This function assigns a center channel signal to the front left and right channels for wider sound; adjust from 0.0 to 1.0. This function only works in the DTS Neo:6 Music mode.
  • Panorama: This feature assigns front left and right signals to surround channels for wider sound, you can turn this feature On or Off. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
  • Dimension: This settings shifts the sound image to the front or rear to adjust playback balance; select from 0 to 6. This function only works in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music and PL IIx Music modes.
  • AFDM: Detects the source's surround back channel signal and sets the optimum surround mode automatically.
  • SB CH Out: This setting selects the playback mode for the surround back (preamp) channels; there are separate settings for multi-channel and 2-channel sources.
  • Subwoofer: Turn the sub on/off.

Speaker Setup: When setting up the speaker system make the following adjustments:

  • Speaker Configuration: large or small for the front speakers; large, small, or none for the center and surround speakers and the surround back preamp outputs; yes or no for the subwoofer
  • Subwoofer Mode: LFE channel only or LFE+Main bass information is reproduced by the subwoofer
  • Low-pass Crossover: 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, or 250 Hz
  • Distance: set the distance from the listening position to each speaker individually; 0-60' in 0.1' increments
  • Channel Level: set the output volume of each channel individually; -12 to +12dB
  • High-pass Crossover: set the crossover points for each set of speakers configured as small; 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 150, 200, or 250 Hz

Quick Select: The front panel and main remote both have three Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, volume, surround mode, and video select settings for easy recall.

Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.

Restorer: This function restores compressed audio signals to pre-compression form, correcting the sense of bass and treble volume to obtain a richer sounding playback.

Audio Delay: This feature compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video signals; adjust from 0-200ms.

Volume Setting: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's maximum volume output. You can also specify a turn-on volume, from -80 to +18dB or Last (whatever the volume setting when the receiver was turned off).

Muting Level Adjustment: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-391 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the input sources except Tuner.

Speaker Terminals: The receiver's front speaker terminals are binding posts. They are not 5-way binding posts because a plastic collar prevents their use with spade lugs and they are positioned too far apart to be used with dual banana plugs. The center and surround channels have spring terminals and will accept pin connectors or bare wire up to 14 gauge.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Video Features

HDMI ver. 1.4a: This unit has four HDMI version 1.4a inputs and one HDMI version 1.4a output. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, Deep Color, and xvYCC technology.

3D: The AVR-391 will pass the 3D signal when connected to a 3D source (3D Blu-ray player, 3D cable box, etc) and a 3D TV.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings; Bright, Dim, Dark and Off.

iPod

iPod Compatibility: Using an optional iPod dock (ASD-11R, ASD-3N, ASD-51N, or ASD-51W), you can integrate most iPods having a dock connector with the AVR-391. Song titles and elapsed time appear on the receiver's display panel; song titles, artist name, album title, album art, and elapsed time appear on a TV monitor connected to the AVR-391 via the component video output (ASD-3N, ASD-51N, and ASD-51W only; no data is transferred to the TV monitor through the HDMI output or when using the ASD-11R). The iPod can be controlled using the receiver's remote or the controls on the iPod. Video and still photos stored on the iPod can also be displayed on the TV monitor.

Simply the best

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never regretted getting this receiver, especially at such low price.
Installation and configuration was straight forward - no hustles. My choice of
this receiver was mainly for the fact that it supported HDMI 1.4 for 3D. This
is my second denon receiver and I really appreciate it's clean crisp sound as
well as the deep bass it provides.

Better than expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed my new Denon AVR-391 yesterday after getting a great deal from Crutchfield. First off the sound quality is so much better than the 4 year old Yamaha RX-V459 that I was using. I needed a inexpensive replacement for my master bedroom that had enough HDMI connections for 3 devices as well as a receiver that could decode Dolby-HD, DTS-HD, DTS-Master, etc. I have been using Denon's in my family room for years (I just bought a new Denon AVR-1611 recently to replace an older Denon) and found the sound quality was hard to beat and sounded much better than most in it's class.

Set-up was a breeze and all works as should. The remote is simple yet has all of the controls that you need for everyday control.

For the price I paid, the Denon AVR-391 is an exceptional value.

.....did I mention the sound quality? Even my wife said to me how much better the sound was over the last receiver.

You cannot beat the sound quality of this Receiver for this price. The music is
great and the surround sound is fantastic. It was easy to hook up and use.
Crutchfield was fast and very good to work with. We use it with a PS3 system for
movies and games. Replaced older Mitsubishi Receiver and this is better. You
won't believe the sound for this price!

This is a great looking receiver. Sound quality is very good, but like some others my unit was freezing up. You would have to unplug it to reset it. It froze up 3 times in the first 2 days. It returned it and got an Onkyo instead, good trade.

Excellent receiver for the money

Written By Serg, San Luis Obispo, CA on Sunday, February 27, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for the most basic functionality without being behind the current
technology, there really is no better option for the money. I am a DIY guy by heart and I
was a bit skeptical moving from individual amps (stereo) to a stand alone receiver. I do
not regret my decision whatsoever. My basic requirements were as follows:

-Multiple HDMI inputs
-Decent power supply
-Realistic output ratings (goes with the above)
-Flexible crossover section
-Budget friendly ($250 or less)

This budget receiver has enough inputs to satisfy most. All of the settings are adjusted
on the unit's screen which was a BIG selling point considering I listen to mostly music.
The power supply on this unit is beefy enough for most users with efficient speakers,
unlike other budget receivers that crumble when trying to drive more than one speaker.
Its still not completely adequate for the power ratings, but its sufficient for an honest 50
watts per channel with all channels driven full tilt.

All the basic functions are there: crossover for all speakers and subwoofer, time
alignment, independent level adjustment. What surprised me was the little details. For
example, setting the turn on volume so I don't have to turn the unit down when powering
off. 0.5db adjustments in the volume control. These are the tiny features that you don't
expect from a budget unit. If you don't need MultiEQ or fancy connectivity features, you
really can't do better for the money.

Lets look at this receiver for what your paying. For this price dont expect to hear perfect sound. Had it for 40 days you really need to know how to set the speakers for good sound. Delay, distance, all that mumbo jumbo. But it did work and if you have the money go up a notch to the AVR-591 it has audessy sound calibration so you wont have to worry about playing with all that mumbo jumbo. By the way i stepped up to AVR-2311CI BIG BIG DIFFERNCE. So im broke, I got great sound.

Dead On with Denon

Written By JT, Hazlet, NJ on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A Denon at this price sounds too good to be true I admit, but no, this is a wonderful product. Virtually distortion free home theatre sound. Tested it with Toy Story 3 Blu Ray and then played the Beatles Mono Collection. I'm still smiling. Exceeded expectations. Played it through 4 PSB Alpha Speakers and one center PSB CLR. Setup was tedious. The Denon setup guide is not great, so I suggest enlisting Crutchfield's help (or Batpig on line). Missing an on screen display and a couple of other nuances but having said that I would have been satisfied with this product at a much higher price. Congrats to Denon and thanks to Crutchfield for making a high end receiver at an entry level price point.

Non tech person. Replaced old Denon unit. Hooked to 82in 3d tv and ps3 game console.
Easy to hookup. Some problems with the 3d but a problem with the TV 3d. I had to upgrade
the operating system of the Mitsubishi.
I still haven't turned all the way up it is just to uncomfortable in a good way.
I was surprised you have to program the reciever for your application. I have had only old
school plug and play.

Don't bother

Written By Drew L, Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, January 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I went shopping for an affordable HDMI-capable receiver, I was surprised to see
Denon even offered one. Although the clean design suggests smooth operations, don't be
fooled. This model doesn't do even the simplest of things, like convert two-channel digital
audio into simulated surround sound. And the unit I received hardly worked. It constantly
froze up and I had to unplug it to reset it. I returned it and got a different brand instead.

Not for Music

Written By TJ, Heart of Illinois on Monday, January 17, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a low-cost receiver primarily to play stereo music from CD's
and to also decode video soundtracks for an occasional movie. I thought this
unit would be just the ticket. I was wrong. It performs admirably with
video-sound, but I find it lacking when listening to straight music. I have
fiddled with all manner of menus and submenus to try and improve the brightness
and imaging from my music collection and from FM stations, but I continue to be
disappointed. The output doesn't come close to the old A/V Receiver it replaced (same speaker set-up).

All that being said - I do believe it is a quality product and if you're looking
for an entry-level receiver primarily for TV, movies and gaming ..... this unit
is a very good option.

Bought this Denon receiver because my other Denon died, and I wanted to match
the speaker and sub-woofer brand that I have. Didn't know what to expect, since
the price point is so low. I was very pleasantly surprised!! The remote is very
intuitive and after playing with the system for a while, I was able to hook
everything up and enjoy. Crutchfield delivery was prompt and the ordering
process was smooth.

Excellent Receiver for the money

Written By KP, Kansas on Monday, December 20, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this Denon AVR-391 base on several factors. Those factors include quality,
price, hdmi inputs, and 5 channels. The box on this receiver states 110watts x 5, so take
that for what you want. I have this receiver powering Polk Monitor 40 bookshelf speakers
for the time being. Going to add a subwoofer at a later date. HDMI switching works great.
Sound quality is fantastic at this price point. This receiver is not chentsy like some of the
other brands at this price point. The amplifier has some weight to it and it feels solid.
Overall this is a great buy and will power most speakers with no problem.

Superb Sound - Great Price

Written By LDBetaGuy, Ohio on Monday, November 01, 2010

I've had the 391 for a couple of days now and am very impressed. While I did
consider the 591 and other models in the current Denon line, I've been on a
simplicty kick here recently and have been seeking out high quality components
that give me the features I really want without the added cost and complications
of the features that I do not want.

My main pre-purchase concern was that a receiver at this price point, even from
Denon, would sound underpowered and thin. This is definitely not the case. Its
powering 3 Polk speakers (TSi200 fronts, CS10 center along with a HSU sub) with
no problem. The sound is strong and clear with room to spare. Having configured
other Denon receivers in the past, manual setup was a breeze. The 391 has more
than enough HDMI and other inputs to meet my current and future needs. The FM
tuner seems to be especially strong.

Five years ago, I couldn't have imagined a receiver with these features and of
this quality for this price. Denon has an entry level winner here; strongly
recommended for those seeking excellent sound at this price point.

Very impressive for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This low end Denon may be much cheaper in price to bigger siblings, but it
delivers the same amazing sound that all Denon receivers are known for. I
purchased this receiver as part of a cheap 2.0 setup using JBL towers. I have
had this receiver for a month now, and it has performed amazingly so far, even
better than expected. The clarity of the sound is great, it has sturdy
inputs(both audio and video), and operates smoothly. It is very transparent and
does not color the sound at all. It also has a very neutral feel to it where it
does not make one part of its frequency range more intense than the rest.
Movies and music sound very natural through it. I cannot comment on the video
processor of this unit because I run all of my video connections straight to my
TV, so I have never used it. This unit is able to down-mix movies into 2.0
stereo sound very accurately and the stereo effect is perfect. The receiver was
relatively easy to setup and fine tune and the remote control is easy to use and
has all the right buttons exactly where you want them. Really, the only reason
to purchase the higher end Denons in my opinion is if you want the Audessey
feature. If you are building a home theater or home music system and don't feel
like investing $1,500 or more into a mid to high end setup, then this is the
receiver for you. It is just the best budget-priced receiver out there.
