    Audio Features

Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-E300 is equipped with a 5 channel power amplifier rated at 75-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-E300's five channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with 24-bit/192-kHz DACs for all channels to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR-E300 is equipped with an Analog Devices 32-bit DSP for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-E300 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
Note: This unit automatically generates a list of all the playable sound modes based on the input audio format and the current speaker setup configuration and displays the list on the screen. Therefore, you can select a correct surround playback mode even if you are not familiar with sound mode selection.

Direct Listening Mode: The Denon AVR-E300 offers a Direct Listening Mode which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing.

Audyssey Technology: The AVR-E300 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz (-20dB to +6dB).
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
      • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
      • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-300ms) to control the sound stage size.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-E300 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB.

Volume Settings: The AVR-E300 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Level Adjustments:  The AVR-E300 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-E300 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
    • Speaker Terminals w/ Color Labels: The receiver has spring-post terminals for all speaker connections. The spring-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-E300's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With five HDMI v1.4 inputs (4 rear/1 front), the AVRE-300 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, such as your Blu-ray player and cable/satellite receiver, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-E300 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-E300, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The AVR-E300 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Composite Video Inputs/Output: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. You must connect the receiver to your TV via composite video to view incoming video from the receiver's composite inputs. There are no component video inputs/outputs.

Video Select Function: While listening to Network/Tuner/USB content, you can switch the receiver's video input so you can display video while listening to an audio source.

    iPod/USB Integration

AirPlay Compatible: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad, or from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac to the Denon AVR-E300, over your home network connection. By downloading Apple's free "Remote" application onto your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles and artist info via the Denon receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI).

Note: To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.1 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The Denon AV receiver is fitted with a front-panel USB (type-A) port and HDMI port for playback of audio and video files from select iPod, iPhone, or iPad devices.

    • Audio Playback: The AVR-E300 supports digital music playback from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad using its front-panel USB (type-A) port. Simply plug your compatible Apple device into the receiver's front-panel USB port, using the cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Stored music and music apps from your connected Apple device can be played through the AV receiver, bypassing the iPod/iPhone D/A converter for better sound quality. The iPod/iPhone/iPad can be controlled by the receiver's remote, or you can continue to use the Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen. You can search for stored music on your iPod/iPhone/iPad by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook. Song/artist information and Album Art from stored music and music apps on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected TV via HDMI (song/artist text will also display on receiver's front-panel display).
    • Video Playback: You can also view video from stored movies and movie apps from select iPods, iPhone, and iPads by connecting your Apple device to the AV receiver's front-panel USB and HDMI input. Use the Apple Lightning-to-Digital AV Adapter (472LT2HDMI sold separately), the Apple Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod touch (5th gen), iPhone 5, iPad 4, or iPad mini to the AV receiver. Use the Apple Dock-to-Digital AV Adapter (47230PHDMI, sold separately), the Apple Dock-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod touch (4th gen), iPhone 4/4S, or iPad (1/2/3). Using the HDMI input, video from your iPod/iPhone/iPad can only be navigated from your Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen. Using the optional iPod/iPhone video dock (ASD-11R, sold separately), you can output video from your older Apple devices such as iPod video (5th gen), iPod classic (80/120/160GB), iPod touch (1st/2nd/3rd gen), and iPhone 2G/3G/3GS). This add-on dock only features an S-video output, so your TV must be equipped with an S-video input (the receiver has no S-video input).

Note: Your Apple iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (max. 1A). This unit will not charge the iPad.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): The AV receiver's on-screen display (GUI) provides information about your system's settings (with video overlay). The on-screen graphical display combines large, clear text and icons, so you can easily make all necessary adjustments and settings during setup, to quickly and easily optimize the AVR-E300 for your particular speaker setup and source equipment. The exclusive Denon Setup Assistant easily walks you through the whole process. When you control the sound volume, the volume level is displayed on-screen, and when you switch the input source, the name of the input source is also displayed on-screen. The on-screen menu can only be output to your TV via HDMI. If you connect the receiver to your television via only composite video, you will need to use the A/V receiver's front-panel display for menu and source adjustments.

Front-Panel Display Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings for the front-panel LCD window; Bright, Dim, Dark, and Off.

Quick Select: The receiver's front-panel has four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

Source Rename/Hide: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Text Search: You can search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.
    • Auto Standby: The unit enters standby mode automatically when no commands are sent to the unit for the set time (30 or 60 minutes). Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The AVR-E300 comes with an IR wireless remote control that can operate this receiver only. The remote control features Glow keys so it can easily be used in the dark.

HDMI Control: The Denon AVR-E300 can control select external audio/video components connected via HDMI which support HDMI control. When you make an HDMI connection with a TV or player compatible with the AVR-E300's HDMI control function, you can perform the operations from the AVR-E300's remote control; Power off, Switching of audio output devices, Switching of audio input devices, Volume adjustment, and Playback functions.

Denon Remote App: The Denon Remote App lets you control the Denon Network A/V receiver using your Apple iOS or Android device. Simply download the free Denon Remote App from the iTunes App Store for the iPod touch/iPhone/iPad (iOS 4.3+), or download the free Denon Remote App from Google Play for your compatible Android device (1.5+). The AV receiver will need to be connected to the same network as your Apple iOS or Android device. This free Remote App lets you control the Denon A/V receiver's basic functions (power, volume, input, surround modes) from your Apple iOS or Android device. You can even navigate the A/V receiver's network and Internet content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. For added convenience, there are eight customizable home screen short cut buttons that allow you to tailor the look and function of the Denon Remote App to suit your needs.

Nice Receiver At A Great Price

Written By StevenS, Lexington, Va. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014

The receiver was easy to hook up using HDMI cables. Perfect for small to middle sized rooms. Plenty of power for these smaller room. This receiver has a HDMI pass through for your TV which I found really nice. When I want to use the regular TV speakers without the receiver and surround system I just turn the receiver off and the signal passes through so you can use your TV like you normally would. This receiver comes with a microphone and easy setup guide that allowed balancing of the speakers. The receiver produces tones and adjust the volume of each speaker to balance out your room. Good value for the money.
    Pros:
Easy setup, microphone and easy speaker balancing.
    Cons:
    None

    Great Entry Level Network Receiver!

Written By JayAyeBee, Lookout Mtn, GA on Saturday, March 29, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon AVR-E300 is an excellent upper-entry level audio/video receiver. It has many useful features. The network connectivity comes in very handy for a number of uses including, remote control via smartphone over wi-fi and streaming thousands of internet radio stations as well as music services like Pandora and Sirius XM. Also you can stream music from a NAS device which is pretty cool. Airplay is decent, but the sound quality could be better (it isn't my source material coming from my MacBook Pro, because it is 320 Kbps and Apple lossless). I haven't tried the direct iPod connection, the sound quality is probably better. The video processing is exceptional; far better than the more expensive 3 year old Yamaha that it replaced. The sound setup was quite easy with the included Audyssey mic and only required minor tweaking after setup. The power is a little weak, but on par for this price range, so I can't really complain too much about it. It sounds a little strained at higher volumes, but at low to moderate dB levels it sounds quite good. On screen GUI is quite useful and intuitive; very easy to use.

Overall I am very happy with this A/V receiver!
    Pros:
Network connectivity and everything that goes along with that. The ability to reprogram input names. Free Denon App for smartphones is handy. Airplay and iPod direct connect. 4K and 3D capable. Ability to update firmware via Ethernet connection. Very user friendly on screen GUI for setup and making changes. Excellent video processing. Very decent audio processing.
    Cons:
Only 5 HDMI inputs (that may be enough for most people, but not me). I tried 2 different HDMI switches and neither one was compatible with the Denon AVR-E300. It is a little weak on the audio wattage, but not horribly. Airplay sound quality could be better.

    Great Budget Receiver

Written By Mark, Clovis, CA on Thursday, February 06, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great secondary receiver. I'm using it in my master bedroom with a set of 4 Polk On wall speakers (OWM3), an Infinity Sub and Center ch. The airplay works great from my iPhone. The Denon App works perfect as well. Plenty of power for a small - med sized room. This is my 4th Denon receiver (2802, 2307,4311CI) and I am pleased with all.
    Pros:
    Price, Ease of set-up, Features
    Cons:
Only 5.1 and no up-converting if you need it.

Love the Denon. I also have a high end Onkyo and this is so much easier to work with. Have direct either net and XM comes on quite fast. Air play works great. I think this is a great low end receiver.
    Pros:
    Easy
    Cons:
You have to use on screen tv to set up to much. Would be nicer if it could be done with just the Denon unit

    AVR-E300

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pound for Pound the Denon AVR-E300 can hold it's own against much pricer units. Ease of setup and use make this unit a fantastic entry into the world of hi-fidelity. Getting this unit on sale made the move up to the E300 from the E200 a no brainer. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a great entry level reciever/sound system base.
    Pros:
Ease of use and low cost, decent power and good amount of input choices.
    Cons:
    No A/B speaker capability.

Decent unit over all but AirPlay not 100%

Written By MikeB, Albany,NY on Thursday, January 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Over all a pretty good unit for the money. I have an Onkyo NR609 upstairs and this one downstairs. The app for the Denon is way better then the Onkyo. That is a plus. The sound is good and clean. I am only running into a set of Energy 5.1 home surround system. Not overwhelming but serves my purpose. Nothing like my 15 year old Pioneer pushing Cerwin Vegas but that is apples and oranges. The biggest problem is AirPlay not syncing all the time. I have to turn off receiver and then sometimes it shows up on iPhone or iPad. Then if I am playing music it will time out and drop the connectivity. So I have to start this all over again.
    Pros:
    Price App Sound
    Cons:
AirPlay Audessy is not very good sounding

    Easy set up

Written By justsayin, Ramsey, NJ on Thursday, January 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was time to upgrade my 10 yr old Marantz receiver and I chose the Denon AVR 300. The set up was very easy and quick - hooked up my speakers/sub + the on-screen set-up was a breeze and had it up and running in 15 mins. The part that took the longest was disconnecting the maze of cables from my old receiver. The Denon unit has plenty of clearly marked HDMI connections and it is a breeze to switch between inputs (BluRay/FIOS, etc...). Sound and video quality is great. I used the included Audyssey calibration device/software to fine tune the speaker set up - I did this after the wife went to bed because she has no patience for that stuff. Hooked it up to the home network and we are loving the pandora/sirius internet radio choices. I had no problems with the software updates (2 so far). Best of all was the speed of delivery from Crutchfield - ordered it on cyber Monday (at a great price!) and had it on my doorstep that Weds!
    Pros:
Easy and quick set-up. Price to value. Crutchfield service.
    Cons:
Had some lip sync issues, but turns out it was caused by a cheap HDMI cable I had laying around the house. Swapped it out for a better one and all works fine.

Very good and flexible for the price. The E300 may have a little less dynamic range than the ten year old denon I replaced, but with the vast majority of source material it is a subtle difference I can live with. Very clean sound and easy to use menus
    Pros:
Easy set up, low noise level, direct iPod input,
    Cons:
It has "forgotten" my volume and speaker settings and returned to default spontaneously twice so far

Excellent product. Have it hooked up to two tower speakers and a powered sub and it's amazing. Have the house shaking.
    Pros:
Powerful, ease of set up and use,
    Cons:
Only con, which isn't much of one, but there's no wireless receiver. It has to be hard wired from the router.

    Denon AVR-E300

Written By John B, Diamond Bar, CA on Friday, December 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was an easy out of the box set up and the included mic and speaker set up software ran perfectly making equalization of the 5.1 speakers a no brainer. But buyer be ware - what I didn't realize is that this receiver has no A/B speaker switch. Unless you buy the much more expensive 7.1 system (AVR-E400), which allows a second separate pair of speakers to be operated you are out of luck. Now I'm going to have to purchase a speaker switch and mess around with it in order connect our out door speakers. I have two older Denon receivers and both have an A/B speaker switch. I'm very disappointed in Denon and this purchase.
    Pros:
easy surround speaker set up with included software and mic
    Cons:
there are only connections for the 5 speakers and sub out - no A/B speaker switch

    Good Little Entry Level Receiver

Written By Flashhog, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, December 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good for an entry level unit. Very easy setup, great menu, easy to navigate. I would recommend this unit be paired with speakers having a high sensitivity. Mine being 6 ohms and 86 db made everything sound strained like the receiver was really being pushed to its limits; when the volume went up the sound became very shrill.

Audyssey does a great job with calibrating the receiver to the room it is placed in but the "Dynamic Volume" and "Dynamic EQ" are quite horrific to listen to. The combination of these two take away all dynamics from movies and music, they basically flat-line the response to boresville, muting, muffling and suppressing anything the might be exciting. I strongly recommend turning them off.

As I said before, great entry level receiver for those new to the hobby. However, I returned the AVR-E300 in favor of my 10 year old Denon with clunky controls and terrible setup menus but having far superior sound. I love the Denon line and will continue to purchase their products.
    Pros:
Good for an entry level unit, easy setup, great menu, easy to navigate.
    Cons:
Relatively low power, Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ very artificial sounding

For the money you can't beat it. I replaced and old Yamaha receiver which didn't have HDMI. I had been looking for a replacement for quite awhile, but never could pull the trigger. I discussed what I was looking for and what my existing hardware was with a Crutchfield adviser and he recommended this Denon AVR-E300 unit. My adviser steered me right, this is a great unit for the money.

    Pros:
Easy setup, easy upgrade and great sound

You will not be disappointed with the Denon AVR-E300 receiver. I debated between a Yamaha and Denon and finally decided on the Denon. I don't regret the decision for a moment. The setup is extremely easy and everything sounds great. The receiver also has volume fade in when changing channels which is just one of extra features.
    Pros:
Easy setup, volume fade-in, sounds great

    Denon AVR-E300

Written By J C, Spearfish, SD on Tuesday, December 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver arrived on schedule & was well packed, no problems on delivery. Set-up was straight forward & a breeze. I ended up needing another HDMI cable for one of my components & hooked-up all my components to the receiver with HDMI cables. The receiver has one output to the TV - easy! Denon has a neat way to tune the speakers with the included microphone. It showed that my two front speakers (which had been installed by a certified electrician in the wall of our new home) were out of phase. I switched the wires as explained by the receiver's "installation wizard" & the resulting sound is impressive. Operating the receiver is also straight forward & intuitive. I need to get two more receivers for two other rooms & plan to buy the same Denon receiver. It's a great product.

    Fantastic Value

Written By AndyG, Naples, FL on Monday, December 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you're looking for a good mid tier home theater receiver with all the functionality you'd need from one of the top name brands in the business, this is a great choice. I've been waiting for a Denon receiver at this price point that offered enough power and options to last me for awhile. Up to now, I either had to sacrifice power or input options in order to get under $500. While there are a couple options that would have been nice, to get a receiver with them all would have been twice what I paid. You can't go wrong with this one.
    Pros:
Denon, need I say more. Plenty of power for large rooms. All the basic input options and a very easy setup interface. Online firmware updates are a breeze.
    Cons:
My only suggestion would have been an optical audio out. Many gamers use wireless headsets and there is no way to handle that through this system. I had to pick it up off my tv which requires a cumbersome switch through the menu system. A small price to pay for the powerful punch you get with this system.

    Very good receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My only complaint is the temperamental setup process that often freezes requiring frequent reboots. Even worse is the prompt to update the firmware. Don't do it! You'll have to hard reboot the system when the firmware download doesn't complete. So I hard rebooted, did not download any updates, and all works fine.
    Pros:
Excellent sound, Great integration of peripheral devices.
    Cons:
Very temperamental setup program, and free upgrades on the firmware is not worth the trouble.

I replaced a defunct Onkyo with this receiver. This is my first Denon and I am very impressed. It provides clean adequate power at a FANTASTIC price. I have it powering Polk in wall speakers and a Polk sub in our living room. The sound is great. The remote and user interface are very easy to use. I am very happy with this receiver

Ease of Speaker Testing and System Set-Up

Written By BCTrott, San Antonio, The Republic of Texas on Wednesday, August 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are loads of good things I can say about this A/V Receiver. But my favorite feature is the automatic speaker balance and volume customizability. First you connect the included microphone and position it in one spot. You have to be silent during the test. Next, go to the automatic onscreen setting and press "Start'. Piercing tone bursts are generated through each speaker. After this process is repeated three times in different locations, go ahead and watch a disk. It sounds great.
    Pros:
Ease of Operation and ability to listen to subscription satellite music channels,
    Cons:
It costs money, uses electricity and is big and black,

I replaced my older KENWOOD receiver with this DENON unit after weeks of research and comparison. I knew it was a great purchase when I woke up and turned on the receiver in my living room from my bedroom! The Airplay feature works flawlessly! Everything can be controlled through the DENON app. I've got surround sound I've never had before. It makes the Blu-ray experience even more enjoyable. All I need now is a concession stand!
    Pros:
-Easy setup. -Lots of power. -AirPlay is simple and fun to use. -Instantly recognized all my different media formats(iPhone, PC, USB, tv, dvd, blu-ray).

    denon e-300

Written By denny, akron, ohio on Friday, May 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to pair with an OPPO 103 Blue Ray Player. The DENON AVR - 300 matches perfectly. The BRP handles the video and the AVR takes care of the audio side of my home theater system. I run my SIRIUS online service through my AVR. I also have Definitive Technology speakers. The sound is far superior to the old system I replaced. The E-300 improved the music side greatly. Plenty of power and it sounds great when I play DVD's and CD's.
    Pros:
Improved sound quality, looks very nice

Is there a speaker A/B switch? For example A is the 5.1 output for watching video while the B is my outdoor speakers for listening to music outside on the deck. This is a normal feature of even the most basic receiver back in the day. [ darin  Jan 29, 2014 ]

    • I am not completly sure, as i had not the chance to verify all features. If it does, it is to be done into the diferent menus. It does not have an easilly available switch for this. [ JOSE   Jan 31, 2014 ]
    • Darin- sorry, there is no A/B switch. [ MERRICK   Jan 30, 2014 ]
    • No it does not. I thought it did but does have that capacity [ JACK P   Jan 29, 2014 ]
im an avid sports watcher with broadcast sound down and playing a music source. will this unit allow me to use my tuner while watching my tv- from what i am reading here, it looks like using a pass thru receiver like this Denon complicates a simple pleasure? [ frankj  Jan 19, 2014 ]

    • I used to do the same thing. I can no longer play music while watching games. I haven't tried to find a solution to this because I guess I don't care as much as I once did. [ DENNIS J   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • Yes, you can watch TV with another sound source playing. I send music from my iPad or Mac wirelessly to the Denon, and sometimes choose another video source other than the Denon setup screen. You need to hit the Option button on your remote and choose what source you want for video. Just tried it with the Tuner and same applies. Hope this helps... [ ROBERT   Jan 20, 2014 ]
    • yes it will [ JOHN N   Jan 20, 2014 ]
I am thinking of buying this receiver ( AVR-E300 ) but I am worried about passing my Blue ray 3D signal and my PS4 through the receiver with one single connection to the TV and losing picture quality Can a 3D blue ray movie look as good on my tv which has 240 refresh rate when the HDMI cable has to go through a receiver first ? [ gwenael  Dec 29, 2013 ]
    4 answers
    • I am only guessing, but this doesn't sound like it should be any problem. The Receiver has a ""blue ray" HDMI input. [ Martin   Jan 12, 2014 ]
    • As long as it is a high speed hdmi cable you should be fine. I do not have any issues with mine [ MICHAEL S   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • I have the X2000 hooked up to my Samsung 8000 series TV and Samsung Blu-Ray player. The picture quality is just as good using the pass-through, even 3D. But I would make sure you get decent HDMI cables that support the latest standard. [ JAMES   Dec 31, 2013 ]
    • Gwenael, I'm using a blueray connected thru the receiver but I only have standard dvds.I have noticed no difference in picture quality.I've been very pleased with the sound quality.Pandora sounds amazing coming straight thru the receiver and bypassing my Roku.Streaming itunes from my laptop and ipod usb connections are both working and sounding great also.As far as your blueray picture quality goes, if your tv has more than one hdmi input you could option to run the blueray video straight to the tv and audio through the receiver.Hope this helps, good luck, Jim [ JAMES   Dec 30, 2013 ]
I connected a Sony Blu-ray player to my E-300 via the port in the back and it won't recognize it,. It'll play through the AUX connection on the front, though. Any suggestions? [ Scott  Dec 28, 2013 ]
    5 answers
    • You could have the blue ray input off or re-assigned to another input (either audio or video). This is in your set up menu. It's in the input assign section, under the video settings menu. [ BRIAN   Dec 29, 2013 ]
    • Scott, You should be able to connect your sony blu-ray via Hdmi on the back of the receiver labeled for blu-ray Hdmi . As you go through the set up menu it should recognize the blu ray. It may take a minute to connect to the screen but it will show up on the tv. When you play the blu- ray make sure you have the input on the TV set to blu-ray and the remote set on blu-ray for the sound. [ JONATHAN B   Dec 29, 2013 ]
    • I have a Sony Blu-Ray and I have had no issues using the hdmi ports on the rear of the unit. [ NORMAN   Dec 29, 2013 ]
    • Hi Scott, I'll be doing the same thing very soon. If the AVR-E300 is anything like my older Denon receiver, the audio inputs have to be assigned to an input source - like Blu-ray/DVD, DC, TV, or AUX. This is done in a series of configuration screens that have to be responded to in the setup process. The screen might be your TV or it might be on the front panel of the receiver. Time to break out the pdf manual and follow the instructions... Best of luck, Ed [ EDWARD F   Dec 29, 2013 ]

Does this receiver allow multiple inputs to run simultaneously? For example: If I wanted the video from my laptop (via HDMI) but the audio from my iPhone (via 3.5mm) could I pick which ones were playing? [ Josh  Dec 14, 2013 ]
    5 answers
    • I don't believe you could do this since the hdmi is audio as well as video. The question is really if the headphone jack audio will override the hdmi audio output and I doubt it. Not much help I know, sorry. [ MICHAEL S   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Sorry, but this receiver only handles one input at a time. So you can only see and hear one selection at a time. Receiver is really good, does what I need it to do and you can't beat the price. Hope this helps. [ MICHAEL   Dec 19, 2013 ]
    • No, I don't think it allows separate video & audio outputs. [ JEFFREY   Dec 17, 2013 ]
    • Yes... [ JOHN F   Dec 16, 2013 ]
    • Yes, it is possible to run both simultaneously. There is not a 3.5 mm input, but you could connect your iphone to the USB port on the front. The receiver also supports airplay which means you could wirelessly play audio from your iphone. Pretty much you start the audio, from your iphone (either from the usb port or airplay), and then you select a different video source. [ STEVEN J   Dec 14, 2013 ]

Does the Airplay allow video as well as audio, like an AppleTV? [ Rich  Dec 01, 2013 ]
    6 answers
    • The AirPlay on the Denon will not do video like an Apple TV. It will not allow "mirroring" either. I use it a lot and it will only display the album artwork and some operational information (play, stop, time remaining, etc.). Also getting my iPhone and this receiver to sync is tough. I seem to have to restart my receiver and iPhone until the stars align just right for them to recognize each other. It is frustrating. Does anyone else have this issue? Btw it sees my Apple TV upstairs all the time! [ MICHAEL S   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Hi Rich, to the best of my knowledge, Airplay is only for audio. It will show the album art work on the TV screen but its Denon's presentation that is displayed (just like if you were streaming music through the web).
