Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-E400 is equipped with a 7 channel power amplifier rated at 90-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-E400's seven channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-E400's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for Dolby Pro Logic IIz 7.1ch playback.
    • Zone2: In addition, the AVR-E400's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with 24-bit/192-kHz DACs for all channels to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR-E400 is equipped with an Analog Devices 32-bit DSP for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-E400 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
Note: This unit automatically generates a list of all the playable sound modes based on the input audio format and the current speaker setup configuration and displays the list on the screen. Therefore, you can select a correct surround playback mode even if you are not familiar with sound mode selection.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-E400 offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Technology: The AVR-E400 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz (-20dB to +6dB).
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
      • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
      • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-400 ms) to control the sound stage size.
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-E400 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB.

Volume Settings: The AVR-E400 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Level Adjustments:  The AVR-E400 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-E400 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
    • Speaker Terminals w/ Color Labels: The receiver has spring-post terminals for all speaker connections. The spring-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-E400's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With six HDMI v1.4 inputs (5 rear/1 front), the AVRE-400 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, such as your Blu-ray player and cable/satellite receiver, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz and 4K video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-E400 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-E400, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The AVR-E400 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

4K Pass-Through + Video Upconversion: The Denon AV receiver's video processor supports pass-through of 1080p/24Hz and 4K Ultra HD video. This sophisticated video processor also provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-E400 and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.

Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one component video input. These analog video inputs are output to your television via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. The receiver does not offer composite video or component video outputs.

Picture Mode: The receiver provides Picture Mode to adjust the picture quality for your viewing content and environment. You can select from Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Hue, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness).

Web Control: You can control this A/V receiver from a web control screen on your Windows PC's web browser. The AVR-E400 and your PC must be connected to the same home network.

Software Updates: Using the receiver's network/internet connection, you can check for and update the latest firmware from the online Denon server. Visit Denon's Support Site for more details. The tested Denon AVR-E400 contained firmware version 7400 -4654-1343 (as of 3/19/2013).

    iPod/USB Integration

AirPlay Compatible: AirPlay lets you stream your favorite songs directly from your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad, or from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac to the Denon AVR-E400, over your home network connection. By downloading Apple's free "Remote" application onto your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad you don't even need to be in the same room as the components or your computer to play, pause, skip, and stop the songs in your iTunes music library. You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles and artist info via the Denon receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI).

Note: To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.1 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.

iPod/iPhone Direct: The Denon AV receiver is fitted with a front-panel USB (type-A) port and HDMI port for playback of audio and video files from select iPod, iPhone, or iPad devices.

    • Audio Playback: The AVR-E400 supports digital music playback from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad using its front-panel USB (type-A) port. Simply plug your compatible Apple device into the receiver's front-panel USB port, using the cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Stored music and music apps from your connected Apple device can be played through the AV receiver, bypassing the iPod/iPhone D/A converter for better sound quality. The iPod/iPhone/iPad can be controlled by the receiver's remote, or you can continue to use the Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen. You can search for stored music on your iPod/iPhone/iPad by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, Composer, or Audiobook. Song/artist information and Album Art from stored music and music apps on your iPod/iPhone will display on your connected TV via HDMI (song/artist text will also display on receiver's front-panel display).
    • Video Playback: You can also view video from stored movies and movie apps from select iPods, iPhone, and iPads by connecting your Apple device to the AV receiver's front-panel USB and HDMI input. Use the Apple Lightning-to-Digital AV Adapter (472LT2HDMI sold separately), the Apple Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your Apple device with Lightning-connector to the AV receiver. Use the Apple Dock-to-Digital AV Adapter (47230PHDMI, sold separately), the Apple Dock-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod touch (4th gen), iPhone 4/4S, or iPad (1/2/3). Using the HDMI input, video from your iPod/iPhone/iPad can only be navigated from your Apple device's clickwheel or touchscreen.

Note: Your Apple iPod/iPhone's battery will be charged while connected to the receiver (max. 1A). This unit will not charge the iPad.

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): The AV receiver's on-screen display (GUI) provides information about your system's settings (with video overlay). The on-screen graphical display combines large, clear text and icons, so you can easily make all necessary adjustments and settings during setup, to quickly and easily optimize the AVR-E400 for your particular speaker setup and source equipment. The exclusive Denon Setup Assistant easily walks you through the whole process. When you control the sound volume, the volume level is displayed on-screen, and when you switch the input source, the name of the input source is also displayed on-screen. The on-screen menu can only be output to your TV via HDMI.

Front-Panel Display Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings for the front-panel LCD window; Bright, Dim, Dark, and Off.

Quick Select: The receiver's front-panel has four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Denon AVR-E400 offers Zone 2 and All Zone Stereo functionality for playback of audio in two separate rooms of your home.

    • Zone 2: Denon's Zone 2 function lets you select a different audio source for listening in a second location of your home (powered output only, there is no line-level Zone2 output). The AVR-E400 features a Main Zone (audio/video) and Zone2 (audio only). The Main Zone offers 7.1-channel playback of your audio/video gear in your main entertainment room. Zone 2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via speaker level outputs. When using the AVR-E400 to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channels.
      • Compatible Zone Sources: Only tuner, analog, USB/iPod, and Network/AirPlay sources can be played in Zone 2. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or different Network content for different zones.
      • Incompatible Zone Sources: It is not possible to play the digital audio signals from the HDMI, Coaxial, or Optical terminals in Zone 2. Video cannot be sent to Zone 2.
    • All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types; analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

Source Rename/Hide: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Text Search: You can search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.
    • Auto Standby: The unit enters standby mode automatically when no commands are sent to the unit for the set time (30 or 60 minutes). Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The AVR-E400 comes with an IR wireless remote control that can operate this receiver only. The remote provides direct access source buttons and direct access to three of  your favorite Tuner, Internet Radio, or On-line music stations. The remote control features Glow keys so it can easily be used in the dark.

HDMI Control: The Denon AVR-E400 can control select external audio/video components connected via HDMI which support HDMI control. When you make an HDMI connection with a TV or player compatible with the AVR-E400's HDMI control function, you can perform the operations from the AVR-E400's remote control; Power off, Switching of audio output devices, Switching of audio input devices, Volume adjustment, and Playback functions.

Denon Remote App: The Denon Remote App lets you control the Denon Network A/V receiver using your Apple iOS or Android device. Simply download the free Denon Remote App from the iTunes App Store for the iPod touch/iPhone/iPad (iOS 4.3+), or download the free Denon Remote App from Google Play for your compatible Android device (1.5+). The AV receiver will need to be connected to the same network as your Apple iOS or Android device. This free Remote App lets you control the Denon A/V receiver's basic functions (power, volume, input, surround modes) from your Apple iOS or Android device. You can even navigate the A/V receiver's network and Internet content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. Denon AVR-E400

Written By DonP, Pennsylvania on Saturday, December 20, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Receiver is great with great sound and depth. Instructions required a lot of work. I have never seen a manual that takes you to so many different parts of the book to perform one simple function. I would like to see the manual writers try to follow their own instructions. This is a very big problem in that it hampers you from utilizing various functions of the receiver until you figure things out or call Crutchfield for help. I'm still struggling with Zone 2 speaker actuation.

    Pros: Product quality and sound

    Cons: Terrible manual/instructions

    Excellent product, and quick shipment.

Pros: Easy set-up, and a quality product!

Cons: Size is a little large, but workable.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The package came when promised with no damage to the product. Set up was quick, efficient, and easy to follow. The sound produced and the visual quality is very nice. I like how I can still use my Wii through the AV Video cables. I also like that it is ready for 4K so I don't have to upgrade again for at least 5 years.

Pros: See above and I really like the current price.

Cons: Product is large and I had to cut out the back panel in my entertainment center, but shouldn't be a problem with larger entertainment centers.

Great buy, great sound et al. A bit complicated to set up at first, but your support team is amazing. I'm sorry I don't have the young man's name who helped me, but he stuck with me until we solved the problem and THEN he made it even better and more convenient to operate. Great service.

Pros: Great sound et al. Not as complicated as the receiver this replaced. Much better performance!

Cons: New technology is a bit complicated I must admit.

    So Far a Great Improvement

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can offer a qualified endorsement of this receiver. My experience is limited; my old system was an all-in-one; my new system, of which this receiver is part, is built of dedicated components. For a new-tech newbie like I've been you'll probably hit Crutchfield support 2-4x; configuring the system to actually do what an ARC (audio return channel) HDMI connection ought to, in my opinion, do by default (port TV/streaming audio to the surround system) actually requires an obscure receiver setting. That's probably par for the technological course. This unit has lots of ports, does AM/FM/internet radio, plus accepts USB devices plus Apple AirPlay, if your tastes lean that way. At this price point there's no wifi but if your room or home can handle the wire, the direct ethernet connection is great. The moment I connected the cable the receiver came back with a firmware update alert offer (it took 50 minutes, the bulk of which was for the GUI).

If you're new to standalone receivers in a home theater (HT) system, that ecosystem requires that you understand that sort of by default, smart TVs think that they're the center of the HT universe. Actually, the receiver is, all the more so the more source machines you've plugged into it. Even so, its role is more passive (select input) unless the input is the receiver's own (the radios and the USB input).

My sense is that this unit may well be a sweet spot on the functionality-cost continuum.

Pros: Many inputs, internet radio (requires ethernet connection, which also enables direct firmware updating), USB input, decent power for modest configurations. 5+1 and 7+1 surround support.

Cons: ARC HDMI connectivity requires obscure setting to enable even after cable's connected to TV and receiver.

I finally retired my 15 year old receiver and after extensive research of features, prices and reviews I came upon the Denon AVR-400. I have only had this for two weeks and I am very pleased with the sound, features and flexibility this unit offers.

    Pros: Easy online setup.

    Cons: Nothing so far.

    Denon AVR-E400 Amplifier

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The system was pretty easy to set up. I probably cut my number of wires by 30% by using the HDMI connections (and internal control). It was also pretty easy to balance the speakers, and thanks to the speaker test management, I found a bad connection to one of my speakers. The system sounds really good now.

Pros: It's a good AV/Amplifier system for a very fair price.

Cons: Don't have any at this point

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has been a long time without a receiver and so it has been fun getting this set up. It has many more capabilities than I will use anytime soon but it does everything I need and then some.

Pros: Very easy to set up. Remote is simple and uncluttered Good sound. I like that you can program a limit to the volume and a volume level for when it turns on.

Cons: I wish you could define your own shortcut buttons on the front panel. I will never have a game system so this button is wasted. I would prefer a knob rather than buttons to tune the tuner. The tuner memories is not as fluid as I would like.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As soon as I open the box to the Denon it was one of the easiest set up I have ever had for a receiver. Some simple on screen questions allowed me to set up the Dennon in about 10 minutes. It sounds great it is easy to use. I had to buy a new reciever to replace the Sony I had purchased that went bad in less than two years. This is my second Dennon I also have the 2807, which is also a great unit

    Pros: Use of use

    Cons: None

    Denon Audio -Video Reciever

Written By DaveM, Earysville, VA on Monday, October 13, 2014

Overall this receiver is very good with many powerful features. The sound output just using a center channel and two side channel speakers is impressive. I use it mainly for TV, DVDs and Blue Ray Discs but do plan to try connecting FM radio and MPEG players as well.

Pros: Great sound plus Plenty of power and many features. The built-in sound optimization software was helpful, it detected that my speakers were wired out of phase ("Polarity was reversed"). The Crutchfield Tech Support was quite good and helped me with several set up problems.

Cons: I found it somewhat difficult to set up. There is no input for TV through antenna. To get the sound to play when watching TV required changing some obscure settings. I could not have done this without Tech Support. The built-in sound optimization software reported an out-of-phase error after I corrected all the wiring (I did have one at first) and the note said that you may get errors reported even if everything is correct.

Great receiver, sound is right on, not a lot of fluff. does everything I need it to do and the app makes it very easy to use without having to open the cabinet on my entertainment center. Replaced a Yamaha RX-673 with this and it crushes the Yamaha. The Yamaha was very disappointing, but this unit blows the doors off it. Never had Denon before, but now a big fan.

Pros: Looks great. Sounds great. Easy set up.

Cons: Runs a little warmer than I would like. I've only had it a couple of weeks. Hopefully that won't be an issue down the road. I do have it well ventilated.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The receiver was super easy to set up. The provided microphone gave an complete custom sound for my large space on a 5.1 system. The sound quality was light years above the 4 year old Yamaha it replaced, By far the best receiver I have owned and at a great price for what you get.

Pros: Price, Easy set up, Options, sound quality it produces.

Cons: The only negative is the manual is on a Disk. if your computer is no where near your receiver that can be a little annoying.

    SiriusXM App is awful

Written By Bob, Burke, VA on Wednesday, September 17, 2014

I bought this stereo with the thought I could get rid of my standalone Sirius XM receiver and use the integrated application. However, unless you want to be subjected to random channel changes, and server disconnects, don't buy this for that purpose. I've been frustrated so much that I'm not even using it anymore. Denon customer service has been non-existent with this issue and false promises. All of the other internet based apps work just fine though. And I'm using a wired port, not wireless, so no radio interference going on. Have swapped out network switch just to be sure and no change. Have read others reporting same problem and same frustrations.

Pros: Easy setup, picture and sound quality are great

    Cons: SiriusXM app doesn't work.

    Great for the price

Written By Jared, Houston, TX on Tuesday, September 09, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to hook up to some existing in-ceiling speakers in my new house, as well as to power the 2nd zone outdoor speakers the previous owners left behind. So far this system has worked great for what I've needed of it. The fact that it has a powered 2nd zone is a huge plus, especially given the price point.

I knew going into it that it wouldn't have Bluetoth, but I wish Denon made a low-profile Bluetooth dongle (like Onkyo & Sony do), as opposed to havintg to go with a larger (and ugly) 3rd party device.

Pros: Great output Powered 2nd zone hook ups

Cons: No bluetooth Denon does not (yet) have a low profile bluetooth dongle for purchase.

Great item, great price. Was surprised tho, that a receiver at this level would not offer a wifi connection to my network. A LAN cable is required for connection. Since I didn't have an outlet near the stereo, I had to call my cable provider to come out and install one. added time, energy and money I wasn't planning on.

Pros: Easy to setup, multi channel works great

    Cons: no wifi capability

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good product with loads of features, many of which I will probably never use. Bought this receiver for its many features and value.

    Pros: Great sound quality.

Cons: Not as straight forward to set-up as I would have hoped. While I did use the CD for detailed set-up instructions, a paper manual would have been better. Setting up a 5.1 speaker system is a little confusing when it comes to the rear surround speakers. Instructions and on-screen prompts are not clear. Also, I do not currently have a TV with an HDMI connection, and I am still trying to figure out how to get my older flat screen Sony TV's sound to play through the receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver in 2013, knowing that I wanted to upgrade sooner or later. When I decided to cut the cable addiction and save money, i purchased a Amazon Fire TV, a HD antenna, and a Tivo Roamio plus (we have Amazon prime for viewing). I knew it was time to get this out of the closet and install it because I needed more inputs. Set up instructions were easy to follow; except Denon forgot to mention that if you are running a 5.1 set-up (rear surround only), you need to hook up the rear surround speaker wire to the surround terminals on the Denon, and not to the rear surround terminals on the Denon. If you don't do this, You won't be able to calibrate the sound properly with the room microphone. Also I had to call Crutchfield tech support to get help in hooking up the analog WII unit, and the very old VCR player/recorder, which I still use. The Tech guy was very patient with me and we solved the problems in about 10 minutes,

Pros: Much simpler to operate that my previous Denon. I like the new Push in Terminal connections on the Denon very much. Makes it easier to get those speaker wires hooked up

Cons: not quite enough analog inputs for older components like a VCR and a cassette recorder/player, but I hardly use that anymore

    Great sound and value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit was very easy to setup, was able to get rid of several cables as a result of HDMI but had enough legacy connections to support my older components. Speaker setup and calibration with Audyssey system was very easy and speakers seem to be balanced. Center channel seems to project dialogue better. Every component worked well after connection, very simple. I have not delved in to more advanced features yet but plan to soon. Overall I'm very happy with unit.

Pros: Extremely easy to setup speakers and components. Walk through setup works well. Remote well labeled and easy to switch between components. FM radio works very well as does iPhone connection on the front.

Cons: Can't think of any at this point.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Second to last Receiver was a Dolby Digital all analog connections purchased in 1998 from Crutchfield. With it I bought Budget 5.1 speakers from Polk R1, etc.....Still using them. Next era was in 2007 Sony Budget, we now had to have optical connections, to get 5.1; using my Pioneer Universal DVD player used 6 channel analog input. Now it is HDMI, and I needed a well rounded Receiver that could do 1 TV output w/o ARC. It works flawlessly. Then there is this internet radio. it is mostly free. There is so much music, I don't know if I will ever have to buy any real soon. The hookup took 15 minutes; spring loaded speaker terminals sooooo convenient. There is a bevy of settings that I haven't mastered yet. But so much is intuitive. Music, such clarity. Movies and Television pop. In 2007 I paid $199, for a Budget Sony 5.1. Today I feel that the quality of Denon over Sony at the price point I paid, currently $349, is an incredible value. I am very pleased with my purchase. Sad that they have discontinued 5.1/6.1 analog inputs with exception of $900, and above units.

I received my Denon receiver promptly as promised. The salesman was very helpful in my choosing this receiver for what I needed in my home theater.

Pros: This is a tremendous upgrade from my 1990 Yamaha. The installation process takes some time but if you follow the instructions carefully it is worth the effort.

Cons: None yet but I have only had it running about 2 weeks

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I must say that Crutchfield is the best site to shop for electronics. The reviews , the data , pictures, prices , support is excelent. They deliver so quickly and they pack it right. Thank you again . I have my denon teamed up with bose 301 s . a 5.1 system. The hdmi connectors are all you need. It is so simple to connect. The price is right. But .... but ... the sound of my old harman kardon ... is it me being nostalgic ? I play drums. I enjoy and listen to ( and learn) hihats and cymbals of my beloved prog rock bands and my Hk was a little better than this denon. But this denon sends sound to rear speakers watching tv or movies amazingly. If movies and tv is your priority , this is it. If you are a music lover and want to figure out what mike potrnoy is doing ... then spend some more.

    Pros: simple . complete .

    Cons: none

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first Denon receiver after having a number of other brands over the years (Onkyo, Sony, Marantz, Pioneer Elite and an older Harman Kardon that is still running great in the living room). I am using this in a HT/gaming environment with a PS3, PS4 and gaming PC as sources. It pairs nicely in my 7.1 configuration with Polk RTi A3's and a HSU VTF-3 sub. After having 2 Onkyo HDMI boards go out, I decided to try a different brand and after a few weeks of use I am very pleased with this Denon. Plenty of features with a very crisp and clean sound. PS3/PS4 games and Blu-ray movies sound terrific and SACD's through my PS3 sound fantastic.

Terrific price/value, and as always Crutchfield was a pleasure to deal with.

Pros: - Easy setup (speaker terminal connections, Audyssey MultEQ etc.) On screen setup was informative and easy to follow - Sound quality - Internet features (music streaming services, pc media connectivity) - Value (great bang for buck at time of review) - HDMI 1.4a for when/if I go 4k.

Cons: - Official Denon mobile app is lacking; I won't deduct a star for it though since I have no real need for it but I tried it on my Droid phone (Galaxy S4) and tablet (Tab 3 8") and had some issues with stability and some functions not working

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently replaced an AVR 3806 which had given me 15 years of superb sound. I replaced it to increase the capability to add devices and so far it is exceeding my expectations. Setup was a breeze and it was obvious that I needed to have run Audessey (the microphone speaker setup) some time ago because the balance was vastly improved. I'm still playing with the relationship between my devices' remotes but overall I am very pleased and totally satisfied. NOTE: purists with undamaged hearing may find areas to quibble about but for my tired ears with years of exposure to loud bangs and helicopter rotor blade noises it works just fine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I decided to give Denon a try after reading it's feature set. I finally went all HDMI for my home theater connections and my older Sony ES series receiver just couldn't do the HDMI switching I needed for my new TV. Well this receiver seems to have all the technology I need. It's a network device. Does streaming music great. It does AirPlay very well. It's 7.1 but I'm running it in 5.1 right now. So far it seems yo play quietly and loudly very well. I set it to use the LFE for the subwoofer and all bass below 150hz. There is no front channel distortion even at the -7.0db volume level. There are settings galore.

I'm thinking about running the 2 unused channels in the zone 2 mode in outdoor speakers out on my deck. I could use it to replace my powerhouse Onkyo amp I use to power big speakers in my garage too. Either of those options might be very handy to some.

Pros: Easy setup, works great on the home network, back panel connections are easy to see and use. It is easy for my wife and kids to figure out how to operate. It works with my Dish Hopper remote, the Denon remote and the Denon app from the iTunes Store.

Cons: It is a bit warm running but it's not too terrible hot. I wish it had rear panel ports to plug in connected devices 110AC power connections.
