Denon

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Putting the fun in functionality

Denon's AVR-E series receivers deliver home theater and music enjoyment without getting too complicated. You get lots of entertainment possibilities quickly. Denon's built-in assistant makes it easy to get everything set up right the first time. The receiver's seven channels of high-quality amplification deliver crisp, clean surround sound. You can even use two of those channels to listen to music on a pair of speakers in the kitchen or out on the deck. Plus, this Internet-ready receiver puts a virtually limitless supply of digital music on tap.

The world is your playlist

Connect the 'E400 to your broadband network and choose from a wide variety of online streaming services including SiriusXM Internet radio, Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify®, and more. Add to all this the built-in V-tuner for thousands more stations, and you've got plenty of listening options to keep your ears happy for a long, long time.

Apple AirPlay® for iTunes® music

The AVR-E400 includes Apple's AirPlay, technology, which lets you stream music from your iTunes music library directly to the receiver, either from a networked computer or right from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®. Not only do you get a fast and convenient way to listen to your favorites, but anyone else in your home with an Apple device can share their latest musical finds. AirPlay requires a wireless home network and a wired connection between the receiver and network.

Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-E400 is equipped with a 7 channel power amplifier rated at 90-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-E400's seven channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-E400's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for Dolby Pro Logic IIz 7.1ch playback.
    • Zone2: In addition, the AVR-E400's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: This receiver is equipped with 24-bit/192-kHz DACs for all channels to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and  clearer sound.

32-Bit Processing DSP: The Denon AVR-E400 is equipped with an Analog Devices 32-bit DSP for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-E400 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
Note: This unit automatically generates a list of all the playable sound modes based on the input audio format and the current speaker setup configuration and displays the list on the screen. Therefore, you can select a correct surround playback mode even if you are not familiar with sound mode selection.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-E400 offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Technology: The AVR-E400 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz (-20dB to +6dB).
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
      • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
      • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-400 ms) to control the sound stage size.
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-E400 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB.

Volume Settings: The AVR-E400 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Level Adjustments:  The AVR-E400 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-E400 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
    • Speaker Terminals w/ Color Labels: The receiver has spring-post terminals for all speaker connections. The spring-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-E400's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4): With six HDMI v1.4 inputs (5 rear/1 front), the AVRE-400 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, such as your Blu-ray player and cable/satellite receiver, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz and 4K video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-E400 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-E400, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The AVR-E400 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

4K Pass-Through + Video Upconversion: The Denon AV receiver's video processor supports pass-through of 1080p/24Hz and 4K Ultra HD video. This sophisticated video processor also provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-E400 and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one component video input. These analog video inputs are output to your television via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. The receiver does not offer composite video or component video outputs.

Picture Mode: The receiver provides Picture Mode to adjust the picture quality for your viewing content and environment. You can select from Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Hue, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness).

Video Select Function: While listening to Network/Tuner/USB content, you can switch the receiver's video input so you can display video while listening to an audio source.

    Network + Tuner Functions

Network Connection: The Denon AVR-E400 is equipped with an Ethernet (RJ-45) port that lets you connect the receiver to your home network (LAN) and your broadband internet provider. When connected to your home network, the AVR-E400 lets you listen to Internet radio and a host of other online music sources from your broadband internet provider, as well as play audio files & display still images from your computer via its network connection (DLNA 1.5 certified). You will even see the iTunes music information, including your track titles and artist info via the Denon receiver's on-screen menu (via HDMI).

Note: To use the AirPlay feature you need a Mac or Windows-based PC running iTunes (10.1 or later) connected to your wireless home network. Your iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad must have iOS 4.3 or later installed and connected to the same wireless home network.

Simply plug your compatible Apple device into the receiver's front-panel USB port, using the cable that came with your iPod/iPhone/iPad. Stored music and music apps from your connected Apple device can be played through the AV receiver, bypassing the iPod/iPhone D/A converter for better sound quality. Use the Apple Lightning-to-Digital AV Adapter (472LT2HDMI sold separately), the Apple Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod touch (5th gen), iPhone 5, iPad 4, or iPad mini to the AV receiver. Use the Apple Dock-to-Digital AV Adapter (47230PHDMI, sold separately), the Apple Dock-to-USB cable that came with your device, and a HDMI cable (sold separately) to connect your iPod touch (4th gen), iPhone 4/4S, or iPad (1/2/3). This add-on dock only features an S-video output, so your TV must be equipped with an S-video input (the receiver has no S-video input).

    Convenience Features

On-Screen GUI w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): The AV receiver's on-screen display (GUI) provides information about your system's settings (with video overlay). The on-screen graphical display combines large, clear text and icons, so you can easily make all necessary adjustments and settings during setup, to quickly and easily optimize the AVR-E400 for your particular speaker setup and source equipment. The exclusive Denon Setup Assistant easily walks you through the whole process. When you control the sound volume, the volume level is displayed on-screen, and when you switch the input source, the name of the input source is also displayed on-screen. The on-screen menu can only be output to your TV via HDMI.

Front-Panel Display Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings for the front-panel LCD window; Bright, Dim, Dark, and Off.

Quick Select: The receiver's front-panel has four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

Multi-Source/Multi-Zone: The Denon AVR-E400 offers Zone 2 and All Zone Stereo functionality for playback of audio in two separate rooms of your home.

    • Zone 2: Denon's Zone 2 function lets you select a different audio source for listening in a second location of your home (powered output only, there is no line-level Zone2 output). The AVR-E400 features a Main Zone (audio/video) and Zone2 (audio only). The Main Zone offers 7.1-channel playback of your audio/video gear in your main entertainment room. Zone 2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via speaker level outputs. When using the AVR-E400 to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channels.
      • Compatible Zone Sources: Only tuner, analog, USB/iPod, and Network/AirPlay sources can be played in Zone 2. You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or different Network content for different zones.
      • Incompatible Zone Sources: It is not possible to play the digital audio signals from the HDMI, Coaxial, or Optical terminals in Zone 2. Video cannot be sent to Zone 2.
    • All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types; analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

Source Rename/Hide: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Text Search: You can search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.
    • Auto Standby: The unit enters standby mode automatically when no commands are sent to the unit for the set time (30 or 60 minutes). Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The AVR-E400 comes with an IR wireless remote control that can operate this receiver only. The remote provides direct access source buttons and direct access to three of  your favorite Tuner, Internet Radio, or On-line music stations. The remote control features Glow keys so it can easily be used in the dark.

HDMI Control: The Denon AVR-E400 can control select external audio/video components connected via HDMI which support HDMI control. When you make an HDMI connection with a TV or player compatible with the AVR-E400's HDMI control function, you can perform the operations from the AVR-E400's remote control; Power off, Switching of audio output devices, Switching of audio input devices, Volume adjustment, and Playback functions.

Denon Remote App: The Denon Remote App lets you control the Denon Network A/V receiver using your Apple iOS or Android device. Jury still out

Written By Matt, Bridgewater VA on Wednesday, March 19, 2014

I bought this to replace a 2011 Onkyo that developed their famous HDMI problem. I wasn't too happy when I turned this one on one time and the video would not work. The audio worked but just the Denon logo was onscreen. It would pass the video along when turned off. Turned it on and off a few times and it started working. A required firmware update last week has not solved the problem. I'm not too impressed with the quality at this price. I think it's going back.
    Pros:
    Easy setup. Great sound.
    Cons:
    Poor quality. Few sound modes.

Great Out of the Box Performance ... But NO Hard Copy Manual

Written By RonE, Columba, TN on Wednesday, March 05, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second time Crutchfield has asked for a rating. So if this sounds familiar, it may be.
    Pros:
Very good sound and pic processing. Also like the HDML throughput to the TV when the receiver is off. Very good phone support from Crutchfield. A great reason to buy from these guys.
    Cons:
The disc manual was confusing to navigate. Asked and received a printed copy in short time from Crutchfield TS.

    Great receiver for the price

Written By J.R., Dallas on Monday, January 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Set up was easy and functionality via remote or app interface are easy enough for my wife to understand. The dual zone output is just what I was looking for to push the living room stereo and patio speakers.

During set up I had problems with the remote app finding the receiver. I called both Crutchfield and Denon tech support for advice, and the Denon desk ultimately had the answer. This seems to be a common problem and they were able to guide me to a solution immediately. The populated name is "Denon AVR-E400," and this is an easy change in the initial setup interface.
    Pros:
Easy set up, and interface. I like the speaker connectors, easy and good connection. But, I am still not sure that I did the right thing by cutting the connecters off of expensive cables.
    Cons:
    No optical output.

    Very good two room system

Written By MikeK, Weldon, CA on Sunday, January 05, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good 5.1 system with allowance for a second room which is what I wanted. So, you can do 7.1 or 5.1 and a scond room. Easy to set up via the automated system. Insure you understand this won't connect your old VCR or your turntable; it is very good for all the current audio/video devices.
    Pros:
Easy to set up following the on-screen set-up, even if you need to start over or add something later. The internet radio has lots of options and is easy to use.
    Cons:
The internet connection to my PC is not so easy and it does not want to play/show many items my Oppo Blu Ray player can handle. Not sure why and since I have a work-around, I have not pursued it.

    Denon AVR-E400

Written By Ron Pipeliner, Spring, TX on Sunday, January 05, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellence out of the box performance. Then, the Audessey setup uses the included microphone and checks speakers for polarity, distance and output and computes best equalization for your room and sitting positions. If polarity is wrong on a speaker, it tells you to fix it before proceeding. I use it in 5.1 theater with 2 channels reserved for the back porch speakers. Over the holidays, a neighbor was over and he's now ready to replace his Bose System with Denon.
    Pros:
    Great sound, easy set up.
    Cons:
Not much in the way of a paper manual, but a CD is included with the details.

    Very Nice!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the first Denon product that I have purchased having used Pioneer receivers in the past. I did not plan on having to buy this until my 3D TV arrived and I found out that if you want 3D you have to upgrade your receiver also. Having said that I can say that this receiver was very easy to install, you can do it without having to read the 100 plus pages of techno babble. The Audyssey tuning process was quick and simple all you need to do is follow the on screen instructions. This receiver added new life to my older speakers and the audio along with the 3D experience is very exciting. There are plenty enough HDMI inputs and they are all marked to match the input device so you can just make a simple selection from the remote. I purchased this as an open box item and I sure can't tell any thing had been disturbed inside of it. I am giving this a 4 Star rating for one reason and that is because if this had been a wireless connect to my home network it would have provided me with everything that I would have wanted. But it is an excellent product with future capabilities already built in. Be sure to plug yours into your LAN to get the new firmware which will take about 45 minutes to complete. If this is in your price range go ahead and get it you won't be disappointed.
    Cons:
    Not wireless LAN

No complaints about this unit at all. Airplay works well. It will even turn the receiver on when you activate on your portable device. Pass thru works great with up conversion of my composite signals. Standby pass thru works well, but you need to have the input selected that you want to standby to before you power down. Not an issue. Love the network capability and the mobile app usage. I would buy this unit again!
    Pros:
Network, pass thru, standby pass thru, up conversion. VERY easy set up!
    Cons:
    None at this time

Initially bought the Onkyo 717 receiver. Couldn't get the ARC to work correctly with my TV. Replaced it with this Denon. After upgrading the firmware, this receiver worked flawlessly. Just set it up and am getting the feel for it, but my first impressions are very positive. Very easy to set up and use.The internet control function seems to work well.
    Pros:
    Ease of use and setup.
    Cons:
Only has Ethernet connection. A wireless function would be nice.

    Great Upgrade for older system

My old receiver/tuner was slowly failing. The Denon has been a great replacement for the price. I am not an audiophile, but the sound produced with the Denon made me realize how bad my older receiver had become over time. The step by step set guide was easy to follow. Would recommed as a great mid-priced receiver. I am just stratching the surface on what I can do with it.
    Pros:
Easy set up, great sound w my current speakers, clean look
    Cons:
none so far, but still learning everything it can and can't do

Not as crisp or As powerful as my past Denon product, in stereo mode rear surrounds are not full stereo. Unit seems to heat up very fast even at lower power levels. No audio pre outs and sound settings are very basic. Directions and audio set up not very clear.

    Unsatisfied

Written By Wendy, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, May 01, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this because the new E400 was supposed to be better than the old and I was told (from Denon) it was the only receiver with "input assign". Which is actually incorrect - some other models have it including the 2313. Unfortunately - it has NO AUDIO OUTPUTS so I couldn't even hook up my old wireless speakers to it. I am returning it and getting the 2313. LOTS more flexibility and power. I recommend that over the E400 hands-down.

    Denon AVR-E400

Written By Jay W, Bennington Vt on Monday, April 29, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Owned a Denon prviously with years of great service. Saw this new unit and spoke to Lee the Crutchfield Rep then purchsed it with his blessing. It is very easy to hook up DVD, Speakers, etc... Set up and directions are a little more difficult. Perhaps my inexperience but struggled a bit. Once I finally was able to get through it and am now getting used to it, I like the unit and am enjoying it.
    Pros:
Hook up, sound, features, second zone listening
    Cons:

I bought this system and am very pleased so far. The question that I have is related to the Multi-room Audio. I've only been able to play the tuner on Zone 2, which are my patio speakers. When i swich the source to CBL/SAT, Blu Ray, etc., no sound from Zone 2. Am i doing something wrong or does the below description that I pasted from the product overview state that? dual-room/dual-source output powered stereo audio output for 2nd room (using powered 2nd-room output allows 5.1 home theater in main room) no line-level output for 2nd room only analog audio sources can be played in the 2nd room [ Riley  Apr 08, 2014 ]

Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. Why doesn't this (any many other units) make the small effort to engineer in phono plugs? How much of a big deal is it to keep them aboard rather than cut them out? There are a lot of us still stuck on vinyl out here!!! [ BCash  Mar 31, 2014 ]

    • I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Many of our home theater receivers do have phono inputs but remember they?re not just inputs; they have preamps behind them so they can pick up the very weak signal from an acoustic turntable and amplify it to a point where the main amp can pick it up. Here?s a complete listing of all our home theater receivers that include that phono input: http://www.crutchfield.com/g_10420/Home-Theater-Receivers.html#?nvpair=AG_Inputs_and_Outputs%7CYCPhono_Input&avf=N I hope this helps. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Staff  Apr 02, 2014 ]
What is the major advantage of the 7.1 over the 5.1 models? [ Spencer  Feb 21, 2014 ]
    4 answers
    • Well Spencer, I use mine to to add extra dimension to the sound in my home theater. I added two more speakers in the front high on the wall. You can also use them on the sides between the front and rear speakers. Another use for the extra outputs would be to feed them to another room with a seperate input for background music. This is an inexpensive way to add music to another room without having to buy additional equipment. The Denon AVR-E400 is so easy to program for any of the above configerations. The sound quality is fantastic. I hope this will help you. Ron M. [ REYNOLD   Feb 24, 2014 ]
    • Hello Spencer, I have yet to use the 7.1 feature but plan to in the future. I decided on this model over the E300 due to the higher power rating. Theoretically the E400 will not have to work as hard as the E300 at the same volume. I have this unit in a slightly enclosed area and all units of this type (regardless of brand) tend to run a little warm. So 'theoretically' the E400 will give me a bit of safety factor over the E300. Also expandability; I have some older equipment that are pre HDMI and the E400 will allow me to connect and use the HDMI feature is I decide to go that way. My family enjoys this Denon unit but to be honest I doubt they'd notice the difference between the two. I have not owned the E300 so I cannot comment on that but the E400 is a nice unit for the market it is in and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. I hope this helps, Jerry [ GERALD   Feb 24, 2014 ]
    • You can have your tv playing surroun sound in your main listening space and have different music playing in another space, say a patio or porch. [ ALEXANDER   Feb 23, 2014 ]
    • I believe the main difference is a couple of extra channels for surround sound. 5.1 surround (5 speaker channels) vs 7.1 surround (7 speaker channels). There maybe a few other extras like more wattage but I'm not sure. I have the 5.1 and it has way more power than I will ever use. [ GERALD   Feb 23, 2014 ]
Does the AirPlay feature work on both zones? Can you choose which zone the AirPlay audio will play on? For instance if the primary output is my cable tv, and the Zone B is outdoor patio speakers, can I Airplay just to the Zone B outside without affecting the primary output? [ JasonP  Jan 25, 2014 ]
    5 answers
    • Sorry for the slow reply, I hope that this is not too late to help your decision. I was able to utilize Airplay in zone 2 independent of the main zone, but it was not as straight forward as using other Network inputs in zone 2. You are not able to use HDMI inputs in zone 2 unless the same input is being utilized by zone 1. Now, turning on zone 2 inputs is very straight forward using the app including iPod/usb. To turn on airplay in zone 2, I had to first start it in zone 1 & 2, and then change the zone 1 input to TV. When I did I was able to continue the airplay function in zone 2. The airplay signal pauses and interrupts between my phone and router, so I need to add an outdoor range extender for my network. The many other network inputs work flawlessly on the patio zone 2. [ JASON A   Feb 05, 2014 ]
    • Fist off your system should be set up So everything play out of your receiver. Zone A should be your home theater system. Zone B will be your outside speakers. I am not sure if you can run them both at the same time. But yes airplay should work on either zone. [ BOBBY   Jan 26, 2014 ]
    • No clue, I don't even know what airplay is. [ ROBERT S   Jan 26, 2014 ]
    • I haven't tried it yet [ HEATHER   Jan 26, 2014 ]
    • Let's start my answer by saying I am no expert on Apple products and find their interfaces to be non-standard and non-intuitive. That said, I can play from iTunes to the AVR-E400 (that is what I see in iTunes) to whatever zones (1, 2, 2 without 1 or 1 without 2) that are set for Media Player when I click AVR-E400 on top of the iTunes screens. As a test, I then turned Zone 1 to Blu Ray and put on a DVD and it started playing in Zone 1 only. However, I could not easily get zone 1 to join back to what iTunes was streaming until I went back to the iTunes screen and hit AVR-E400 again. Not sure if that bit of clumsiness is Apple's or Denon's. And, I often watch a DVD while there is music playing in Zone 2 and that is not a problem with this system. I hope this answer helps. Does this receiver support Using the surround back channels to Bi-Amp the front speakers? [ Chris  Dec 30, 2013 ]
    5 answers
    • Can you elaborate what you mean by, "bi-amp"? [ TIMOTHY   Jan 04, 2014 ]
    • I'm not sure what you mean by Bi-amp, but we did set up my 7.1 Surround last night and it works properly. You have to go in and manually set it up. The default is 5.1. The only problem I'm experiencing is an overload into the Sub causing a popping sound when higher noises happen in a movie with gunshots or waves crashing. We did some adjusting and may have fixed it. I might have to call them on that issue if it continues [ KENNY   Jan 01, 2014 ]
    • I'm afraid that I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your question. Sorry, Steven [ STEVEN   Dec 31, 2013 ]
    • i did not get that far - had to return 2 units - audio output problems - sorry [ salvatore   Dec 31, 2013 ]
    • All I can tell you is that Denon receiver is hooked up to my Bose Acoustimass 16 and sounds awesome. I have 3 speakers in the front and 3 speakers in the rear. Also have subwoofer for a grand total of 7 speakers. I recommend this on a high scale. Hope this helps. [ JOE   Dec 31, 2013 ]
Which speaker input would i connect speakers i would like to use for a second (dual) source? I have outdoor patio speakers that I would like to use as a separate source on most occasions and some times using the same source. [ Mike  Dec 26, 2013 ]

    • The binding posts on the rear panel should be labeled "Zone B" [ EDWARD F   Dec 29, 2013 ]
    • For a powered zone 2, you would use the Surround Back channels as the 2nd zone. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Is there any way I can connect this to my home network other than hard wireing? My router is just too far to run cat 5. And one floor up, I have good wireless signal all over. [ Herb  Nov 30, 2013 ]

    • buy a cheap access point and forget cables, you can also connect more systems in that ap including an a pc o an ios device for airplay [ alejas   Apr 14, 2014 ]
    • This receiver is not compatible with a wireless connection. However, a quick call or chat with an Advisor should help determine your options. If you have not purchased this receiver, there may be another that is better suited for your needs. If you do already own this receiver, then a solution like internet over powerline may be viable.
