A strong audio and video performer

If you're a music lover, sound quality may well be your top priority in a receiver. But that doesn't mean you're willing to sacrifice picture quality when it comes to movies and TV. Fortunately, the Denon AVR-X2100W IN-Command receiver requires no such sacrifice. This is a video-lover's receiver, with features to help you get the most out of all your video sources. Advanced video processing can upconvert standard-definition analog signals to HDMI in 1080p or 4K for use with HD and Ultra HD TVs. There are component video connections to bring older gear into the fold. There's also a second HDMI output for large home theaters with multiple displays such as a projector and TV. Of course, the 'X2100W also sounds wonderful, feeding your speakers plenty of power and decoding all the latest high-resolution audio formats to please critical listeners and impress anyone with a set of ears.

Wireless versatility for all your digital tunes

With all the various devices we use to play music, the hardest part can be playing them all through our home theater speakers. The AVR-X2100W takes all the mystery out of this process. Have a networked computer or music server?  Built-in Wi-Fi along with DLNA compatibility will place your entire collection at your fingertips. Have a tablet and smartphone? If it's an Apple® device, AirPlay has you covered. If it's Android™ or another platform, built-in Bluetooth will do the trick. Are you a subscriber to Spotify's premium service? Access their entire library through the Spotify app and play it all back with this receiver. Plus, there's Pandora, SiriusXM, and free Internet radio streams all accessible using this receiver on its own.

Multi-room playback

Denon Remote App

The free Denon Remote App turns your Apple or Android smartphone into a powerful Wi-Fi remote.

Wish you could have music playing in two rooms? The 'X2100W can help you do it. Its multi-zone feature means it can power speakers in two rooms simultaneously — playing different songs in each or the same song in both rooms. Use the surround back speaker outputs to power stereo speakers in another room. Connect them in a kitchen, bedroom, or out on a porch to listen to tunes while the rest of the family enjoys a movie in 5.2-channel surround sound in the home theater.

Sound that's tailored to your room

To get sound that's perfectly optimized for your room and speaker setup, you'll need to calibrate your speakers. Luckily, that's as easy as plugging the included microphone into the AVR-X2100W's front panel and pressing "Start." The mic will take speaker measurements as test tones are played. Then, the receiver's Audyssey processing will adjust settings to guarantee well-balanced surround sound in your room. Audyssey's Dynamic EQ and Volume features help your system perform better at lower volume levels and minimize large volume fluctuations while watching TV or movies.

Control it with your smartphone or tablet

Denon's free Remote App can turn your smartphone or tablet into a powerful Wi-Fi remote control. Download it on your Apple or Android device and use it to change sources, adjust the volume, control music in multiple zones, and listen to Internet and network music sources.

Home automation capabilities

Like all of Denon's IN-Command receivers, the AVR-X2100W offers useful home automation features. It can be set up and operated by a computer over a wired or wireless home network via IP control. There's an infrared input on the rear-panel, for use with external remotes and control systems. And the AVR-X2100W is certified for use with Control4 home automation equipment.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received my new Denon AVR-x2100w - setup took about 30 minutes following the instructions. Connectors on the back are clearly marked making the connections intuitive and simple - got them right the first time. On screen menus are easy to follow and settings are easy to change. Sound is awesome! I haven't setup the network so can't report on Internet based features.

Pros: easy setup. uncluttered remote. great sound.

    Cons: none.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Set it up with HDMI from Bluray and SAT input sources as well as a CD player and activated the WiFi music features. Then set up the sound room with the mic provided. That was easy enough. The sound on the wifi inputs and the CD were excellent! However: The video from the SAT box would go black for about 2-3 seconds every couple of minutes and there was a very audible "cracking" of the audio every minute or so as well. Not bad when you're watching the news, but imagine that when your team's QB uncorks a 50 yard ball down the sideline and all you can do is hear it?!

The resolution and color were poor until I rewired HDMI directly to the TV and ran an optical audio cable from the BluRay to the Denon just to get bye. Even the display while listening to Pandora (Artist, Title, etc) would blink of for a couple seconds a few times every minute. Called Crutchfield and got with tech and they were a great help. They spent about an hour with me trying to figure out what was up. In the end, they swapped it for a new unit. Two days later, it arrived and I sent the first one back. Long story short, same issues with unit #2. I even went out and bought 3 brand new HDMI cables and re-stripped and tipped all of my speaker wires after talking with tech again the next day. We surmised that we should use a different brand, so I went with an Onkyo TX-NR727.

Hooked it up and life is good. No issues. I'll review it after a week or 3.

Pros: Crutchfield support. This is seriously why I buy all my stuff through them. Try calling a big box chain store to get some help! Kudos to tech support for not only having the ability to try to troubleshoot with a customer, but also to Crutchfield for empowering their people to send out a replacement machine, etc to help us get going! Great Audio away from the HDMI sources, seriously great! Seeing my friendly UPS dude 3 times in 10 days showing up with a box from Crutchfield!

Cons: Obvious connectivity issues through the HDMI (in or out?), though I'd expect it's the out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and foremost, the setup was easy. The app is great. Setting up 2 zones could not have been smoother. It's a joy.

Pros: Easy setup-a 5.2 speaker system, plus a second zone. The app is actually better than the remote. Plus it's a nice looking receiver

    Cons: None so far

Great sale on a great product!

Very easy to set up, love the sound. My direct tv remote even works on it. The wifi gets a much better signal than my tv, so my pandora works flawlessly.

    Great Receiver and Great Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this receiver to power bookshelf speakers in my living room and outdoor speakers on my patio. The dual zones work great and provide plenty of power for what I need. The Denon App for iPhone is very easy to use and makes operating the receiver a breeze.

Pros: Ease of use, dual zones, easy setup.

    Good Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I think the AVR-X2100W is a good value. The staff at Crutchfield recommended it as a replacement for a Onkyo NR 708 that was constantly on the fritz. The Denon drives the B&W speaker pretty well. Setup was easy. My only complaint is the bass & treble are not adjustable in real time. This is a problem for the center channel.

Pros: Works well out of the box. Good power for the price

Cons: Bass & Treble not adjustable in real time. Manual comes on a CD or is online. I have a desktop computer in another room and no IPAD, so I had to run back and forth.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always wanted a Denon receiver to power my Klipsch 5.1 setup, so when I saw the price for this unit I jumped on it. I replaced a near 14 year old Sony that admittedly did a fine job, but I wanted something with HDMI ports (as my old Sony had none), and some wireless functionality. The sound quality is indeed a step up from the Sony, and the Audessy setup was a breeze. I must say it does deliver in ways the Sony did not. The back channels are now way more active than before, and it has a nice host of features fine tuning settings that I wasn't expecting. Very pleased with the audio output.

Like some have mentioned, I have found the Bluetooth to be somewhat problematic. It will at times drop the connection, and you cannot get it back until you pull the plug on the unit. This is slightly a pain as my wife likes to use Bluetooth and I get to deal with it when it doesn't work. I was also slightly bummed that it couldn't accept steamed video over DLNA. For these tow reasons I knock it down a star.

However, I have not had any issues streaming audio via DLAN over my wi-fi network. Works like a charm for me. Everything else is great on it though. Very satisfied.

Pros: Great sound. Easy setup. Tons of HDMI ports. Loads of features, and DLNA audio streaming.

Cons: Bluetooth can be a flaky. Have had to re-start the unit a handful times already. Tons of HDMI ports but skimpy on legacy connections. This was not an issue at all for me, but possibly one for you?

I received unit 2 days ago and I got to hand it to Denon. This Receiver does everything I could ask for and has enough power to boot. Took less than a half hour to set up with on screen help. Granted I had a tripod handy for surround calibration.

Pros: Ease of setup. Fantastic sound.

    Cons: None so far

    Should Never Have Been Marketed!

Written By Trip, Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 16, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds pretty good when all set up, but receiver locks up FOR SURE on certain features noted in cons. Contacted Crutchfield and Denon repeatedly with no resolution (only to reset unit, which not only didn't fix the freeze-up problem, but also blows away all the settings that took hours to configure; Denon did show me a way to back up most settings, though). Tried firmware update, didn't make a difference. Completely unacceptable, if the advertised features aren't going to work then the product never should have been marketed! Don't care for most of the digital inputs (turns off TV speakers except for pass through; can't output to Zone 2). Audyssey does a pretty decent job, but I'd like to tweak it a bit (tone down the bass, bring the vocals out more, turn down the really high treble notes just a bit), can't do any of it. Audyssey knows best, I guess. Tried the very inadequate 8-band equalizer, but can't bring in the 'full' Audyssey Eq and make manual adjustments form there. Just couldn't get a great, CUSTOMIZED sound! Returning item. May try the Sony STR DA-1800ES. Running sound to a pair of Focal Chorus 726's. Intrested primarily in the stereo music reproduction.

Pros: Sounds pretty good, when it works! Can actually reach someone at Denon Tech Support (but couldn't resolve problems).

Cons: Locks up routinely and FOR SURE on IPod on-screen play, Internet Radio and Airplay transmission (no solutions found) Headphone jack insert automatically shuts off speakers (not useful for Sennheiser RS180 wireless headphones). Audyssey Eq settings can't be copied or substantially adjusted; their way or the highway (sort of like Apple's philosophy toward consumer) No digital audio out to Zone 2 (though documented by Crutchfield, and seems to be a common thread with receivers), why the heck not

    One big bundle of intertainment.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had many brands and price levels over the years but my new Denon (replacing an older model) is best by far. Easy to install and with self-calibrating software can't be beat for the price. This Receiver provides equal pleasure whether it be music or TV - Blu-Ray or DVD.

    Pros: Ease of installation.

Cons: Haven't had any bad experiences as yet. A bit heavy but who's complaining having all that capability.

While I have not had a lot of time to enjoy all the features, I have nothing but praise regarding the experience so far! The set up was a breez and the surround sound experience / audio quality is fantastic!

Pros: Easy setup and easy network connection via wifi.

Cons: Onscreen user interface last graphically pleasing than my Onkyo....but so what. It's about the sound.

Easy to set up & calibrate. Sound is amazing. Passthrough does not work. Bluetooth does not work. Wifi does not work. Crutchfield service was great. Sent out a replacement right away. Same issues. Too bad because it sound so amazing. Oh well. Gotta go with a non Denon. Hope third time is a charm.

Pros: Best sound. Easy set up with very intuitive on screen guide that walks you through every step with ease.

Cons: Pass through feature, Online radio, bluetooth and wifi do not work. Not worth the sale price.

    New sounds are great.

replacement for my onkyo thx that had a bad HDMI processor. Not much better quality although the WiFi is a great feature. Very dissatisfied that Spotify was advertised as a built-in feature but the unit is not preloaded with Spotify as an option. The remote app is of poor quality does not always work. Could not get spotify to work.

Pros: Ease of setup, clear directions

Cons: Misleading because Spotify is advertised all over but does not work.

Crutchfield response on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 Thanks for your review. Spotify plays through the receiver via the Spotify Connect feature. You control Spotify with your smartphone or tablet. It requires the Spotify app for Android or Apple and a premium subscription. Both your device and the receiver must also be on the same network.

Sounds quality is fantastic, easy to set up and for a not so technical savvy guy like me it's pretty user friendly. The WiFi works great and I am able to stream Pandora as well as internet radio stations. And to buy this quality receiver at $300 off makes this a pretty sweet deal. I had originally purchased the another brand which required a USB WiFi adapter and we couldn't get it to work at all. Crutchfield customer service was amazing in assisting me with returning the item and I couldn't be happier with the Denon AVR-X2100W IN-Command. 5 star rating!

Pros: Sound quality, abundant features, WiFi that works, on screen programming

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this receiver when Crutchfield ran a great sale on it thinking it would be a good replacement for my older Yamaha. The unit has a ton of features and connectivity, but lacks clarity and deep bass. I have Klipsch RF-82ii fronts, RC-62ii center, and RW-10 Subwoofer. I was replacing a Yamaha RX-V2600 which has more power, bass, and clarity in the mids than this receiver but lacks all of the modern connectivity features. I ended up returning the Denon receiver because I could not settle for the downgrade in sound quality. I will be ordering a new Yamaha RX-A2040 instead.

Pros: Has all of the modern connectivity features you would expect in 2015 - Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Pandora, etc.

Cons: Lacks mid-range clarity and does not have deep bass.

    Great For HDMI Switching

Written By cdtierce, Alabama on Monday, May 04, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is great for upgrading from an older non-HDMI switching capable receiver. This receiver should have plenty of HDMI connections for you.

I consider myself tech savvy therefore setup was relative easy. The auto speaker calibration is decent, but not exactly my listening preference as I preferred the manual speaker and EQ setting. This receiver does have a decent amount of power and covers my listening area well. At this time, I do not have the multi-room feature enable as I do not need this feature.

The WIFI does a good job although I did have a minor issue with getting connected to the internet due the proxy setting being enabled when it should not have been.

I am disappointed the receiver does not have preamp outputs. Would have been nice, but the next model up, the x3100, adds this feature among other.

On sale, this is the best deal I have seen and much less than the x3100 that I really wanted.

Pros: plenty of HDMI inputs, WIFI enabled

Cons: No preamp outputs, thus the 4 star rating.

I was looking to improve sound of most computer based sound systems and yet have the ability to stream from iTunes, Pandora and Google Music. I am able to control this receiver from my android and ios based devices. I have found the Apple ios app has the best user experience. I have this setup with 2 Klipsch bookshelf speakers. I get great sound and have many HDMI inputs all controlled from apps on tablets or phones. I just purchased 2 Klipsch outdoor speakers to setup on zone2 for outdoor entertainment.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup was very easy and, within 1/2 an hour, everyone in the family could get the music they wanted playing in each of the two zones. That includes Pandora, Spotify, FM radio, etc. We used the web page control, the iOS App, and the included remote. It does not have the power of the Rotel that it replaced, but it drives my two B&W 804's hard enough that you don't want to be in the same room with them which is all I need. The enhanced connectivity and relatively high usability make it well worth the trade although I do wish Denon would package all this functionality just as a pre-amp.

Pros: Excellent connectivity with streaming music services. Good usability from web and mobile apps.

Cons: The mobile app has some annoying glitches like changing a song in zone 2 will sometimes make zone 1 stop whatever it's doing. It can also be slow/unresponsive.

Got on sale, has good power. Use it to drive 2 old OhmE speakers in yard, unit in shed. Really good sound for outside.

Pros: Bass was better than I thought it would be, especially being outside. Very easy setup, barely needed to hookup to TV.

Cons: Wired connection a little balky, seems to lose it if powered off for any length of time, which mine is being used outside. Connects back easily though, otherwise would have given it a 5.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The The Denon AVR-X2100W IN-Command receiver is simply outstanding! I've owned receivers for years, and this is by far the BEST! I have Klipsch Reference Series (RF-52) 5.1 system and wanted a mid-range system to push my speakers. The sound quality is very clear, I run everything through this receiver, Verizon FIOS, Blu-Ray, etc. FIOS HD channels with Movies, TV Shows or Music in HD sound excellent! DVD movies upconvert through the receiver and provide a much better picture and sound than my previous receiver. Blu Ray movies are simply amazing, the sound quality is very impressive! I love the on-screen setup, which is actually projected on the TV Screen! It was very easy to setup, my living room is fairly small with some windows, so I went through the on-screen Audissey EQ system, The on-screen menus were very easy to follow and automatically equalize and calibrate my home theater system to overcome room acoustics...I love the networking feature, the loaded apps work very well. I found a remote control app that I use for my Galaxy S5 phone and Galaxy Tab S tablet, works very well. Denon has an app, but is not as user friendly. The app allows you to select source, volume control, power on-off, and much more...MOVIES I used to test the surround sound features and upconversion during my setup were The Matrix (Blu Ray), Wanted (DVD) Lord of the Rings(DVD), Book of Eli (Blu Ray) and Star Trek (Blu Ray).

Pros: Feature rich receiver, with networking connection (wired) or wi-fi, loads of HDMI ports, setup, sound, power and clarity is impressive! Outstanding upconvert features to include 4K, remote control apps for your phone and tablet make it very easy to control,

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The purchase, arrival, and setup of our Denon AVR-X2100 could not have been any easier. We could not be any happier with the product or the experience. First, the price was terrific. After doing extensive research based in large part on the technical specifications provided by Crutchfield's web site, I was able to pinpoint the precise product that suited my needs. What I did not know when I purchased this receiver is that Denon had put so much effort into the setup process. The setup process is unbelievably easy. It literally gave me visual instructions on setting up the equipment right through my television. Most of the ins and outs are easily performed by people possessing even a modest background in home theaters and stereo systems, such as myself. However, I was pleased to have confirmation on the choices I had made as I progressed through the setup. What took me by surprise was not just the on-screen setup, but how nearly all of the features could be easily configured. It is easily imaginable to buy a product and get the features you expect - but what Denon has done in this receiver is to make all of the features accessible within moments of installing the product. The picture and sound with this unit are top-notch, and my B&W speakers are now reaching their fullest potential. I am one satisfied customer!

Pros: -Ease of setup -Time from setup to use -More than adequate space for inputs/outputs -Not just functional - intuitively functional

Cons: -The unit height is a bit tall

I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but this was pretty easy to install. I reviewed several receivers and with some guidance from the tech line I pulled the trigger on the Denon. I Had some difficulty with Bluetooth initially but I think that is more the network in my house, seems to be working well now though. The sound is great, and selecting sources is straightforward as is the zone selection for each source. I really like the ability to have a multi zone/ multi source system. I would definitely recommend this receiver, and for the money, I couldn't be happier.

    Denon X2100W - Great price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Finally decided to upgrade when I found that the price of the Denon X2100W had dropped!!!! WOW! I was running Denon's AVR 1803, a 12-year old receiver! Needless to say, I felt the need to upgrade. I have had my eye on this receiver for quite some time. I researched and researched and researched. Frankly, I grew tired of researching! Then, after the price dropped, I decided to purchase. I really want to give this receiver 5 stars, I really do. There is only 1 issue standing in the way. Questionable HDMI performance... Let me explain. After calibrating and running Audessey XT for 8 positions, I was blown away by the audio! Let me tell you, the set-up for this receiver is exceptional! Tommy Boy became a New movie. I heard things in this soundtrack I had never heard before! How easy Denon has made the sep up! Then, unfortunately, I discovered a flaw. To me, no big deal. To the wife and my 6-year old, a major "inconvenience." If you power up your sources first, then your Denon X2100W, you will notice that the receiver won't pick up the source signal. Then, you will get horrible horrizontal lines on video and speakers clippin on audio. Not a pleasant experience! So, after some troubleshooting, I figured out that in order for the system to work properly, you must power up the X2100W first! Let it boot up before anything else. Then, power up your other devices. After which, you will enjoy all that this receiver has to offer... good performance at a good price point!

Pros: -Ease of set up -Excellent audio!

    Cons: -HDMI pass through

    Excellent Value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 3rd A/V receiver I have tried in the past couple of months and I think I finally have a winner. The only reason I didn't consider this one sooner was the price point. But once this thing dropped in price, I gave it a closer look and I am glad I did. For the money, it is the lowest-priced receiver at Crutchfield that still converts component / composite video to HDMI output. Further, it has built-in Wi-Fi and Apple Airplay as well as Zone 2 Pre-Outs (which I am using quite a bit to send Pandora and Apple Airplay to another receiver in my house) and a 2nd HDMI output. Further, there are 2 component and 2 composite video inputs in addition to 8 HDMI inputs. The set-up is quite simple and it's very easy to make adjustments with the on-screen menu, although there are fewer adjustment options than higher-priced units, but that can be a benefit. I would have liked a little bit more ability to adjust HDMI output 2 individually (e.g., send audio thru the TV on output 2 but thru receiver on output 1). The remote seems much more streamlined and easier to use than a lot of others I have tried. Oh, and it sounds great and I haven't even done a custom audio set-up yet.

Pros: Great value; Component video conversion; Zone 2 Pre-outs; 2 HDMI outputs. Great sound quality. Very simple to set up and adjust. Great remote!

Cons: Not HDCP 2.2 compliant (but what is at this price point)? Not much custom control over HDMI output 2 (same settings as HDMI output 1).

I purchased two of these units. One for our living room and a few months later another one for our game room. One unit is set up using wireless, the other wired. I found set up to be simple and straight forward. The audio configuration utility called Audyssey works great, producing outstanding results. My only regret is not waiting until the units were on sale.

Pros: Straight forward set up, easy to configure, automated tools work as expected.

    Cons: None.

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had owned two Yamaha and two Onkyo receivers in the past and had always wanted to try a Denon. I chose the Denon because it is supposed to be a more "warm sounding" receiver compared to Yamaha. This was a concern for my due to the brighter sound found on Klipsch speakers. This first unit I ordered had some scratches on the top (open box) so I called Crutchfield and was offered a replacement or a credit. I took the replacement. The second unit came in and had a strange glitch. If I plugged in my Sony Blu-Ray player into the Blu-Ray HDMI input I would loose signal. If I plugged my Directv into that same input I would get perfect connection. I then tried a different cable with the Blu-Ray player and still loose signal. After a call to tech support they decided to sent me a replacement. Kind of a weird issue but I was not deterred. My replacement came in and all is well. Set up was easy and takes about 20 minutes. The sound is detailed and crisp. At first this was connected to a set of Klipsch RF-42II but I soon realized I needed more speaker for my room. I ended up with a set of Klipsch RF-62II's and this receiver drives them with authority! The remote is not cluttered and is easy to operate as are the setting / menus. So far this units is working as it should. Overall I am very pleased even with my minor issues I had upon getting started. I have been a Crutchfield customer for 20 years and their service has been fantastic!

Pros: 3 year warranty Easy to navigate menus Warm sounding compared to previous Yamaha's I have owned = great match for Klipsch speakers Drives my Klipsch RF-62's with authority

Cons: I would like to see a metal front panel on this unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the unit for about 1 month. It has all the features that I desire. Purchased it on sale. Good price. The unit has performed well except for the the wireless SiriusXM connection. This connection will intermittently drop off. All the other wireless stuff works fine. I've contacted Crutchfield, Dennon, Sirius, Verizon FIOS and they have offered different "solutions". Unfortunately none of the "solutions" has permanently solved this issue. So I don't know where the source of the problem is. I'm still considering returning the unit for a refund, exchange for the same unit or different brand. Fortunately I'm still under the 60 day Crutchfield return/exchange policy. Crutchfield has been very responsive. Great service.

Pros: Good price. Easy set up. Nice Features.

    Cons: Wireless connectivity to SiriusXM.

    Fun and Frustration!

Written By Frank, United States on Tuesday, February 10, 2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this AVR twice with high hopes that led to hours of frustration, two returns and a purchase of a competitor brand! After moving into a new home, I wanted to compliment my new 60 TV and fill my large family room with a theater experience. I had requirements of BlueTooth, Mobile App, Dual Zone to feed my deck outside, min 6 HDMI inputs, 4K passthrough, etc. However the key for me was receiver dimensions. The TV console I purchased was very shallow. I wanted room to comfortably connect all cables and allow the AVR to breath. The 13-3/8" depth was perfect!

I'll admit that I purchased the first unit through an online retailer as an open box item. Immediately I had network issues (wired/wireless) that were accompanied by what I describe as audio dropouts. I talked to the great team at Crutchfield and was convinced I gotten an open box lemon. I returned the online retailer's purchase and purchased a replacement through Team Crutchfield. I had the exact same problem with the 2nd unit. Calls to tech support led to the expected answer "we have never heard of that before" response. I broke down everything device by device and wire by wire. Being a network professional, I knew this was a device issue and returned the AVR. I end up with a Sony unit that worked perfectly out of the box and has yet to have ANY network issues. There is a control processor issue with Denon or buggy firmware. When connected to either wired/wireless I would loose pings and experience audio dropouts.

Pros: Sounded great, app interface looked cool, very short depth which worked great for the space I had

Cons: Wired Network did not work. Wireless would not stay connected. Bluetooth was intermittent with very short range. While connected to either wired/wireless I would drop pings and experience high latency from a device on the same network switch with no other devices connected to it. At the same time I would drop pings, the audio would drop out when playing back any content (Tuner, BluRay, etc).

I've had Pioneer my whole life. Well now I will never own anything besides Denon. A child could go through this set up process easily. Speaker calibration is more advanced & precise compared to anything pioneer has done & it's 10 times easier and less stressful than the Pioneer set up. The sound quality with this particular model is absolutely blow away! My home theater sounds like your on the set! Music sounds like your on the stage! At higher volumes you usually hear a lot of noise, none on this model. I'm in awe of what Denon has done! Take it a step further with the mobile app. It has bad App Store reviews but I can't fathom why?? Maybe it was when it first came out because I have no problems with it. I use my two back speakers as "Zone 2" and control my iPod music from my roof deck while the Patriots are playing downstairs on "Main Zone 1". Buy this model and trust me. Ignore that first bad review!

    Defective Unit

Written By TB, Belmont, CA on Wednesday, August 06, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this unit after careful consideration between Denon/Onkyo with similar features. pervious receiver was HarmonKardon from 14 years ago. Desired features included wireless/bluetooth, multiroom capabiliity, enough power for a good 5.1 theatre experience, good quality full sound for music. I stream alot of online music e.g. Pandora. I chose this Denon receiver, and have had the following problems: 1. inconsistent connection to wifi in the house 2. inconsistent internet access, even when wired through cat6 3. slow user interface (can take 1 minute for menu to show up on TV screen) 4. twice, the unit has switched itself to 100% volume, blowing out my eardrums, potentially damaging my nice new polk speakers which I just installed. Summary: This unit is clearly defective. I have no idea how a non-defective unit would work. However, this is my first and probably last experience with the Denon brand as I am very bummed to have wasted a bunch of time on a defective unit. Next up: Onkyo TXNR727.

Pros: Setup seemed relatively easy. I liked the automated speaker setup with the microphone on a tripod.

Cons: those listed above. In addition, I felt the user interface was well below average. sort of a clumsy system, with a non-intuitive menu system.

Discrete Amplification: The Denon AVR-X2100W AV receiver features a powerful Class AB power amplifier section equipped with discrete high current power transistors. This discrete amplifier design delivers optimum realism and stunning dynamic range. By using high current, high power discrete power devices, the amplifier is able to easily drive high quality speakers. The AV receiver's 7-channel Class AB amplifier is rated at 95-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels).

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-X2100W's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Surround Back Left/Right for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback.
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front Left/Right, Front Height Left/Right, Center, and Surround Left/Right for Dolby Pro Logic IIz 7.1ch playback.
    • Bi-Amp: You can configure the amplifier for front bi-amp operation to achieve a higher-quality 2-channel sound by connecting the receiver's front and surround back channels to your main front speakers (if compatible). Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.
    • Front B: A second set of front speakers can be powered by the surround back amplifier. Receiver will be limited to 5.1ch surround.
    • Zone2: In addition, the AVR-X2100W's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Left/Right, Center, Surround Left/Right, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-X2100W AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
Note: This unit automatically generates a list of all the playable sound modes based on the input audio format and the current speaker setup configuration and displays the list on the screen. Therefore, you can select a correct surround playback mode even if you are not familiar with sound mode selection.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-X2100W offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Silver: AVR-X2100W features the Audyssey Silver suite of powerful DSP features; including MultEQ XT, Dynamic Volume, and Dynamic EQ.

    • MultEQ XT: Via the supplied measuring microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT measures all the speakers in your home theater during setup, including the subwoofer, and then generates multiple high precision DSP room acoustic correction filters, which together provide smoothest and most natural tonal balance, regardless of the brand or model of the various speakers. Up to eight listening positions can be measured, configured, and recorded. MultEQ XT compensates for both time and frequency characteristics of the listening area based on "Audyssey Setup" measurement results. Selection is done from three types of compensation curves - Reference (default and recommended, L/R Bypass, Flat, and Off).
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume features advanced psycho-acoustic processing to deliver clear dialog and wide range sound at reduced volume levels so that you can enjoy theater-level clarity at whatever listening level you choose.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ also features advanced DSP processing to deliver full range wide-band response, even at reduced volume levels. Dynamic EQ Reference Level Offset provides three offsets from the film level reference (5 dB, 10 dB, and 15 dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Room Size (sets the size of your desired acoustic environment; Small/Medium/Large), Effect Level (adjusts the effect signal level from 1-15), and Delay Time (adjusts the delay time from 0-400ms to control the sound stage size).
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-X2100W receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Night Mode: The Night Mode optimizes sound for late night listening. This function can be set to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Level Adjustments: The AVR-X2100W provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The AVR-X2100W offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital & Analog Inputs: The AVR-X2100W features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and a coaxial (RCA) digital input; the digital input are assignable. There are also four stereo analog (RCA) inputs.
    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-X2100W's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the AVR-X2100W features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.

    Video Features

HDMI Inputs/Outputs: This AV receiver is equipped with eight HDMI inputs (7 rear/1 front) and two HDMI outputs, enabling connection to various HDMI compatible devices such as Blu-ray Disc players, satellite/cable boxes, game consoles, and HD video camcorders. The two HDMI outputs are parallel, so the same audio/video signal is output through both and can be used simultaneously. The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K video signals to a HDTV.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass-Through: The receiver's HDMI inputs and HDMI outputs support 4K/60Hz Ultra-HD, 4:4:4 Pure Color, and 21:9 video pass-through, a feature of the latest HDMI 2.0 specification for Ultra-HD content. They also support 1080p (24 or 60Hz) for playback of high-definition content from Blu-ray, satellite/cable, and gaming devices.
    • 3D Ready: Every HDMI input and output of the AVR-X2100W is able to pass through 3D video signals from your Blu-ray player or satellite/cable box to your 3D ready TV via HDMI.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-200ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 200ms to synchronize it with the video image.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

4K Video Upconversion: The Denon AV receiver's sophisticated video processor  provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-X2100W and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-5) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs, two component video inputs, and one component video output. The composite video inputs are output to your television via the receiver's HDMI monitor output (there is not composite video output). The component video inputs can be output to your TV via the receiver's component monitor output or HDMI monitor outputs.

Video Select Function: This receiver can display video from a different source on your connected TV during audio playback from Tuner, USB, Network Music, or Bluetooth.

Picture Mode: The receiver provides Picture Mode to adjust the picture quality for your viewing content and environment. You can select from Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Hue, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness). Picture adjustments cannot be made for 4K content.

    Convenience Features

OSD w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): With Denon's on-screen menu and setup assistant you can connect, configure, and use your home theater system with ease. The OSD and setup assistant features clear on-screen graphics and text that optimizes critical system settings for your particular home theater setup. The on-screen menu and setup assistant can be output to your TV via HDMI only. If you connect the receiver to your television via only composite video, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display for menu and source adjustments.

Quick Select: On the AVR-X2100W's front-panel, you'll find four Quick Select buttons that let you quickly choose from the most popular input sources; the ergonomically designed remote also includes Quick Select function buttons. With Quick Select, the AVR-X2100W remembers not only your preferred inputs but also your preferred audio settings, so you can enjoy precisely tailored sound with each one.

Multi-Zone: The Denon AVR-X2100W offers Zone 2, All Zone, and HDMI Monitor 2 functionality for playback of audio (HDMI Monitor 2 also supports video) in two separate rooms of your home.

    • Zone 2: Denon's Zone 2 function lets you select a different audio source for listening in a second location of your home. The AVR-X2100W features a Main Zone (audio/video) and Zone 2 (audio only). The Main Zone offers 7.1-channel playback of your audio/video gear in your main entertainment room. Zone 2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via left/right RCA audio or speaker level outputs. When using the AVR-X2100W to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channels. When using the receiver's line output terminals for the second room you need an additional amplifier to power those speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Denon receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.
      • Compatible Sources: Compatible Zone 2 sources include - Analog Audio Inputs, AM/FM Tuner (cannot select different stations for each zone), USB (including iPod/iPhone), AirPlay (only available in Zone 2 when AirPlay is also playing in Main Zone), Bluetooth, Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time), DLNA/Media Server contents.
      • Incompatible Sources: It is not possible to play the digital audio signals from the HDMI, Coaxial, or Optical terminals in Zone 2. Video signals and DSD audio cannot be sent to Zone 2. Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 2 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 2 (this scenario also includes Bluetooth).
    • All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types; analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.
    • HDMI Monitor 2: The receiver's second HDMI monitor output lets you send the same HDMI audio/video input signal that is being played in the main zone to a second zone (video is output at the resolution supported by both TVs).

Gapless Playback: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV and FLAC music files via USB or DLNA.

Source Rename & Text Search: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources. You can also search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Timers: The Denon AV receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.
    • Auto Standby: The unit enters standby mode automatically when no commands are sent to the unit for the set time (15/30/60 minutes). Before it enters the standby mode, "Auto Standby" is displayed on the front-panel display of this unit and the on-screen menu.

ECO Mode: This receiver is equipped with an ECO Mode function that allows you to enjoy music and movies while reducing the power consumption during use, Eco mode adjusts the maximum power available according to the volume level selected to reduce power consumption.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

    Bluetooth + Remote Control

Built-in Bluetooth: The Denon AVR-X2100W features built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.4. You'll be able to wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple device, Android smartphone/tablet, portable audio player, laptop, or PC to the Denon receiver. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control. Advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. Song/Artist information is displayed on your HDMI-connected TV. Up to eight Bluetooth devices can be remembered by the AVR-X2100W, so family members as well as friends can enjoy their favorite tracks.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Denon AV receiver.
