Wide-ranging multi-zone, multichannel flexibility

Denon AVR-X4000 7.2-channel home theater receiver with Apple AirPlay

The AVR-X4000 offers lots of connection options, including 11 pairs of speaker outputs.

With an impressive 11 pairs of speaker outputs, the AVR-X4000 offers maximum setup flexibility, so you can customize your home theater to your own space and needs. You can connect and control audio and video components in up to three rooms. Connecting a 5.1 surround system in one room leaves outputs for a stereo system in a second room or third room — no additional amp required. Plus, the additional HDMI outputs means you can connect an HDTV and a projector in one room as well as another TV in a second room. Not interested in a multi-zone system? Then use those extra channels in Zone 1 for "front high", "front wide," or "surround back" speakers to give movie soundtracks even more depth and realism. Or try bi-amping your compatible front speakers to squeeze even more detail out of your two-channel music. By adding an additional stereo power amplifier, you can expand your options even further.

Customized setup with Audyssey

Denon's home theater receivers continue to get easier to set up and control. One of the ‘X4000's best setup features is the built-in Audyssey speaker calibration software. Not only does it optimize your system to fit your room, but it can also tone down loud commercials, improve dialogue and surround effects during low-level listening, and even reduce the amount of bass you can hear in the next room. The ‘X4000's full-color on-screen display uses lots of graphics makes these and other settings a breeze to navigate. Once you're set up, be sure to download the free Denon Remote app for your Apple or Android™ smartphone. It's the simplest and most intuitive way to control your receiver via your home Wi-Fi network.

High-res audio

Enhanced audio performance

If you're serious about your music, check out some of the audio features Denon included in the AVR-X4000. Hybrid PLL circuitry reduces timing errors — known as "jitter" — that occur with digitally connected components like Blu-ray players and hinder clear, accurate playback. You can even go a step further with Denon Link HD, a separate connection between the 'X4000 and a compatible Denon Blu-ray player. This connection separates the disc's timing data entirely from the HDMI audio stream, allowing the receiver to accurately re-clock the data for even more sonic accuracy. If you have a USB thumb drive with high-resolution files, pop it in the front-panel USB port and let the 'X4000's high-performance 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters translate them into rich, detailed music. Even MP3s and other compressed digital music formats can sound great thanks to Denon's Compressed Audio Restorer.

Denon AVR-X4000 7.2-channel home theater receiver with Apple AirPlay

The free Denon Remote app for Apple and Android lets you easily control the 'X4000 from your smartphone.

Audio, video, analog, digital...bring 'em on

With its abundance of inputs, the 'X4000 can handle just about any component you can throw at it. Seven HDMI inputs offers plenty of room for Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, cable boxes, and more. Analog-to-HDMI upscaling means you'll only need a single cable to connect this receiver to your HDTV. Add a second subwoofer for room-shaking movie effects. Connect your turntable and enjoy the warmth of vinyl. Or embrace the digital age with the front-panel USB connection for your iPod® or other Apple device. It creates a direct digital connection, so you can get even better sound from it using the 'X4000's circuitry. Throw in lots of digital and analog audio inputs and this receiver is prepared to take on almost any home theater setup, no matter how extensive.

Equal Power Amp Design w Discrete Circuitry: The Denon AVR-X4000 is equipped with a 7 channel power amplifier rated at 125-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.08% THD, driving 2 channels) that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. To faithfully reproduce the original surround sound, each of the Denon AVR-X4000's seven channels are equipped with its own high-current power amp of equal power. Since these power amps also use discrete circuits configured with parts strictly selected for their contribution to high sound quality, rather than with low-cost integrated circuits (ICs), the surround sound playback is of impeccably high quality.

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-X4000's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • 7.1Ch (SB/FH/FW): Assigns all power amplifiers within the receiver for the Main Zone. In this configuration, up to 11 speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Height L/R, Front Wide L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The receiver will automatically switch between the Surround Back (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD), Front Height (Dolby Pro Logic IIx), and Front Wide (Audyssey DSX) speakers based on the type of 7.1ch content. You must use separate amplifiers for Zone 2 and Zone 3 speakers.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 2: The AVR-X4000's amplifier channels can be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 3 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 3: The receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 3 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the third zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 2 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 2/3-Mono: The AVR-X4000's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 2/3 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and mono playback in the 2nd and 3rd zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available.
    • 5.1Ch Bi-Amp: Assigns all amplifiers of the receiver to the Main Zone with the front speakers bi-amped. Up to five speakers (Front L/R, Center, & Surround L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Surround Back amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 2  and Zone 3 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 7.1Ch/2Ch Front: Assigns all amplifiers within the receiver to the Main Zone for 7.1ch playback (w/ Surround Back speakers). You can also connect a second pair of front speakers that are different from the ones being used during multi-channel playback for playback of 2ch audio. The receiver will automatically switch the internal power amplifier between your multi-channel front speakers and your stereo front speakers when listening to surround sound or 2ch stereo. Front Height/Wide speakers are not available. A separate amp must be used for Zone 2 and Zone 3.
    • 5.1Ch + Front B: Assigns five amplifier channels of the receiver to the Main Zone for up to 5.1ch playback and two amplifier channels to power another pair of speakers, often called "Speaker B".  Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. A separate amplifier must be used to power Zone 2 and Zone 3.
    • 9.1Ch (SB/FH/FW): Assigns all seven internal amplifiers to the receiver's main zone and also requires a 2ch external amplifier for 9.1ch playback. The Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Front Height, and Front Wide L/R speakers are powered by the internal amps. The receiver will automatically switch between the Front Height (Pro Logic IIz) and Front Wide (Audyssey DSX) speakers based on soundfield setting. The Surround Back L/R speakers will need to be powered by an external 2ch amplifier. Zone 2 and Zone 3 also require separate amps.

24-bit/192kHz DACs + AL24 Processing Plus Technology:  This receiver is equipped with dual 24-bit/192-kHz DACs on all channels to decode and playback high-resolution recordings with less jitter and clearer sound. The AVR-X4000also offers AL24 Processing Plus for all channels (including Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Sub). Denon's proprietary AL24 Processing, an analog waveform reproduction technology, expands the original 16-bit audio data to 24-bits; and can support up to 192kHz sampling frequency. AL24 Processing Plus thoroughly suppresses quantization noise (the difference between the actual analog signal and the quantized digital signal) associated with D/A conversion of LPCM signals to reproduce the low level signals with optimum clarity that will bring out all the delicate nuances of your movie & music soundtracks.

Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit (D.D.S.C.-HD): The AVR-X4000 is equipped Denon's Proprietary Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit-HD, featuring a dual high-speed 32-bit floating point DSP processors for high-quality surround audio performance. All elements of the Surround Processor are optimized to the highest standards by the use of selected high performance and discrete components, particularly the A/D and D/A converters and the sophisticated DSP surround decoder.

Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer: The AVR-X4000 is equipped with a "Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer" that is capable of reducing jitter and phase noise that negatively affect sound quality. The "Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer" provided with this unit improves the sound localization, reproducing a natural sound field that is closer to the original soundtrack.

Denon Link HD Jitter Free Audio: The AVR-X4000 also incorporates Denon Link HD, Denon's proprietary jitter-free audio transmission technology, which is designed to work with Denon's DBT-3313CI Universal Blu-ray Player (033DBT3313, sold separately). This feature separates out the timing data from the HDMI stream, allowing the receiver to re-clock the data with maximum precision, eliminating distortion-causing jitter for pristine sound quality. This technology transmits digital sound by transmitting the Denon A/V receiver's master clock signal to your DBT-3313UDCI and operating the ICs (integrated circuits) on both sides based on a shared, uniform clock signal. In digital signal transmissions over conventional HDMI connections, the ICs are operated with separate clock signals, resulting in considerable jitter and loss of resolution in the sound. Denon Link HD works not only with Blu-ray disc, but with all HDMI digital output signals; including DVD, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD, music CD, and music streamed from a network.

Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Denon AVR-X4000 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.
Note: This unit automatically generates a list of all the playable sound modes based on the input audio format and the current speaker setup configuration and displays the list on the screen. Therefore, you can select a correct surround playback mode even if you are not familiar with sound mode selection.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-X4000 offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audyssey Technology: The AVR-X4000 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 automatically sets speakers and subs to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics. The AVR-X4--- also features two Audyssey technologies (Sub EQ HT & LFC) designed to optimize bass performance. The AV receiver even offers Audyssey DSX which adds front speaker effects.

    • Audyssey MultEQ XT32: Audyssey MultEQ XT32 technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 8 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ XT to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings (63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz); from -20 to +6 dB .
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Audyssey Sub EQ HT: Audyssey Sub EQ HT provides individual tailoring for each subwoofer in a dual subwoofer setup, delivering the optimum combination of highest deep bass output and lowest distortion.
    • Audyssey LFC: Audyssey LFC processing analyses and processes bass content on a continuous basis and custom tailors the sound via advanced psychoacoustic algorithms to deliver dynamic bass response within the listening room without annoying family members or neighbors in adjacent rooms.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX): Audyssey DSX adds front effect speakers to improve spatial sound reproduction. Starting with a 5.1 channel system, DSX adds front Wide and/or front Height channels for better sound staging (although both wide and height speakers can be added, only one pair is used at a time). DSX also applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and surround channels.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Room Size: This feature allows you to set the size of your desired acoustic environment when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes; select Small, Medium small, Medium, Medium large, or Large.
      • Effect Level: This function adjusts the effect signal level from 1 to 15 when using specific Denon Original Surround Modes.
      • Delay Time: This feature adjusts the delay time (0-300ms) to control the sound stage size.
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.
    • Audyssey DSX Settings: While listening in the Audyssey DSX audio format, there are two further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Stage Height: adjust sound stage height (+/-10) when using front height speakers
      • Stage Width: adjust sound stage width (+/-10) when using front wide speakers
    • Center Gain: During DTS NEO:X, this function distributes the dialog output from the center channel to the front left and right channels and widens the sound image in t he front.

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-X4000 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic (including PL II, PL IIx, PL IIz), and DTS Neo:6 modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Tone Settings: You can independently adjust the system's overall Bass and Treble settings from -6 to +6 dB.

Volume Settings: The AVR-X4000 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Level Adjustments:  The AVR-X4000 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The AVR-X4000 features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial digital inputs. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources, except Tuner.
    • Speaker Terminals w/ Color Labels: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 6 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-X4000's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • 11.2Ch Pre-Outs: The AV receiver features 11.2ch pre-amp outputs (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Height L/R, Front Wide L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers.
    • Phono Input: The Denon AVR-X4000 is fitted with a Phono input (MM), so you can connect your turntable and listen to your vinyl records with high-quality sound.
    • Headphones: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
    Video Features

7 HDMI Inputs/3 HDMI Outputs: With seven HDMI v1.4 inputs (6 rear/1 front), the AVR-X4000 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices, such as your Blu-ray player and cable/satellite receiver, to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to up to three TVs with a HDMI cable (via its three HDMI outputs; two parallel and one discrete), reducing cable clutter. The two parallel HDMI outputs distribute the same video signal simultaneously to two separate displays. The discrete HDMI output allows you to play a different audio/video source in another zone. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. The receiver's HDMI v.1.4 jacks are compatible with 1080p/24Hz & 4K video, 3D video signals, Deep Color & x.v.Color technology; as well as LipSync, ARC, and HDMI control.

    • 3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The AVR-X4000 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AVR-X4000, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The AVR-X4000 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

4K Pass-Through + Video Upconversion: The Denon AV receiver's Analog Device 12-bit video processor (ADV8003) supports pass-through of 1080p/24Hz and 4K Ultra HD video. This sophisticated video processor also provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-X4000 and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.

Note: The receiver's HDMI Zone 2 output does not support analog-to-HDMI conversion, nor does it support HDMI-to-HDMI scaling.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-4) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.

Zone 3 features either a preamp-output or speaker terminal output so you can use this amp or a separate amp to power speakers in another room. When using the AVR-X4000  to power speakers in a second and third room of your home, the second and third zones are restricted to mono operation and the main zone is limited to 5.1 channels. When using the receiver's preamp output terminals for the 3rd Zone, you need an additional amplifier in that room to power those speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel. The volume of Zone 3 can be controlled by the Denon receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.
Note: *Compatible Sources - Tuner, analog, optical/coaxial digital (2ch PCM), USB, and Network sources can be played in both Zone 2 & Zone 3. Zone 2 also supports output of HDMI 1-6 audio/video signals. To hear AirPlay in Zone 2/3, you must first start playing Airplay in the Main Zone. Once you have selected AirPlay in Zone 2/3, you can then switch the source of the Main Zone. *Incompatible Sources - You cannot select different AM/FM radio stations or different Network content for different zones. Zone 3 does not support HDMI audio. Zone 3 does not output any video sources (HDMI, composite, or component).

All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 & Zone 3, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

Front-Panel Display Dimmer: The receiver features 4 display settings for the front-panel LCD window; Bright, Dim, Dark, and Off.

Quick Select: The receiver's front-panel has four Quick Select buttons. Each button can be programmed with a specific input source, surround mode, and volume setting for easy recall.

Source Rename/Hide: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Text Search: You can search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Personal Memory Plus: For each input, the receiver automatically memorizes the settings for input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, audio delay, etc. When the input source is switched, the settings last used for that source are automatically recalled. The surround parameters, tone control settings, and playback levels for the different output channels are memorized for each surround mode.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.

Anybody use bi-amp with this? I have Polk Rti-8, just curious if doing bi-amp is as good as it's hyped to be. I currently have 9.1 setup and am leery of loosing the surround backs. Are the High and Wide possibly assignable to be the backs?

I am bi-amping a pair of Klipsch RF-82 ii's and am very happy with the sound. I've never done a direct comparison without bi-amping, so I can't objectively tell you what I'm gaining. I only have 2 surround speakers running (and for room reasons cannot add more)...so losing the 2 surround channels is not a difficult decision for me. So I'm happy with the bi-amping. You'll have to decide if you are willing to lose the surround back.

bi amp effectiveness is dependent on the quality of the crossovers in your speakers, my polk monitor 70s really improved with bi amping enough so that i gave up on 7.1 and went with 5.1.

I have 9 speakers now. I discovered that the DVR-W4000X, even though it has 11 speaker hookups, only can drive 9 speakers. :( So if I bi-amp, then I'll actually be turning off 2 speakers. The article doesn't address what is gained by bi-amping. I'd like to find a comparison of that. To Bi-amp or not to Bi-Amp.

I am planning to use this or the x4100w model to power my 7.1 main zone and 8 other speakers in 2 other zones. (4each). Planning on using a powered 12ch amplifier to accomplish this. My question is if the preout on zone 2 & 3 are volume controlled through the reciever or is it just on constant signal to amp? Controlling volume thru amp will be difficult.

reciever controls vol on zone 2 & 3, I run 5 rooms with 2 speakers each. I only have 5 channel main, don't think you can do 7.1 and second zone at the same time.

Channels 2 & 3 are volume controlled through the AVR-X4000. You have to switch to those zones, but once there the volume can be used to control the level.

Does this receiver have Bluetooth, or just Airplay? It's hard to believe that they would only use the proprietary Apple system, giving up all the potential sales to people who don't own Apple products.

Sadly, there is no Bluetooth nor wifi. The Ethernet port is 100mbit, which is sufficient, but underwhelming for a product of this nature. The entire web interface is functional, but slow and looks 'old'... Otherwise, the receiver has been excellent.

Hi can i use all 11speakers in zone one? I do have an external amp for the other 4 connections which would be front high and front wide. I'm not interested in using the other zones this will be a one room dedicated pre/pro unit.

I'm not running that way, mine is set up in 5.1 for the main zone, however both the manual and the unit's setup menu shows the max output as 9.1. Seven would be powered directly, with the remaining two from the preamp which can be set to Surround Back, Front Height, Front Wide, or Front. It doesn't appear it will drive all 11 at the same time, even though it has physical connections for 11 speakers.

3 zone question. If I am running 5.1 in the main room, 2 speakers out on the patio (zone 2), and driving a tv in zone 3 with hdmi, does the tv in zone 3 (no external speakers) get the audio signal through the hdmi or is the hdmi video only? or does it require a using a channel from the receiver?

Now that I've lived with the av receiver and have it fully installed, I can confirm that you can play two different video sources in the main and 2nd zone with separate audio in zone 3. The hdmi does carry the video/audio to zone 2 to play on the tv speakers. My tv has digital audio out that I could run to a separate receiver. Thanks.
    scott  Dec 25, 2014

I don't think I can fully answer your question since I don't use Zone 3. However, I'm fairly certain Zone 3 will not work independent of the main zone without separating some channels. In other words, I don't think you can watch tv on zone 1 with 5.1 and watch tv on zone 3 independently. You may have to assign a channel to zone 3 to get audio to your HDMI. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

HDMI is Video and Audio. In fact it's 2 way. HDMI cable has a reverse channel and tells the amp what resolution your TV will support.

I have not tried any 4 ohm speakers: however according to the owners manual you should use speakers with an impedance of 6 to 16 ohms

After checking my manual which lists specifications for 8 ohm and 6 ohm speakers, I contacted Denon Tech support to get the answer which is "NO" the AVR-X4000 receiver is not rated to support 4 ohm speakers. Sorry for the bad news. Michelle

This receiver is not recommended for use with 4-ohm speakers. The minimum impedance (as recommended by Denon) is 6-ohms.

Steve, Although I don't currently run 4 ohm speakers, I want to say this receiver does support. I can confirm this later today. The receiver is nice however it requires heat disapation as at high volume levels she heats up. Also....if your use to a lot of manual sound tweaking, you might be disappointed. The sound is really good, however you are fairly restricted into category sets with very little manual override ability. Hope this helps, and I will attempt to confirm the 8 ohm requirements

Hey Greg, I don't have mine set up that way, but it should be able to handle that requirement, if not, by adding an amplifier to zone 2 would give you the power to drive the system. I am very happy with the receiver.

Yep/ and it can be two different digital sources, not just an analog along with the 5.1. So you can watch a blu ray in one room and have apple airplay in the other at the same time. This truly is a fantastic reciever.

My setup: - Room 1 - HDTV + 5.1 - Room 2 - quantity 2 in-ceiling speakers - Room 3 - HDTV and quantity two in-ceiling speakers Question 1: Can I play the same audio/video source in all 3 rooms simultaneously? For example, can I watch and listen to the same football game in all 3 rooms? Question 2: Can I play different sources in all three rooms without an additional amp? thanks!

This receiver has only one set of powered terminals for the main soundstage! There is no "B"channel. You would need a slave amp to power another room. This receiver does not have multi-room/multi-sorce! So you cannot watch or play two different sources in two different rooms!

I know the DSD-500 is airplay as well. Can I use this receiver to play directly to the airplay in another room to pipe sound from tv into my kitchen? Using receiver zone 1 as the source for the audio (same audio as whats playing in zone 1)

As far as I know the AVR-X4000 can only be used as the airplay "slave" device, meaning it can receive/play a stream from a "master" device such as your PC with itunes. I don't believe the AVR-X4000 can send a stream to another airplay "slave" device such as an airplay speaker in your kitchen.

All in all, I was looking at this unit but may end up getting the Marantz 7008 instead, not so much for the extra amplifiers but for the higher quality components and longer warranty. The free unit that comes with the 7008 looks nicer as well.
    joseph  Dec 10, 2013

Yes, you must activate airplay in the main zone first, then switch on zone 2
