Take your home theater above and beyond with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X™

Denon AVR-X4200W In Command

A technology that just made its debut in home theater receivers last year, Dolby Atmos creates the most lifelike, captivating surround sound of any audio format we've heard to date. If you're watching a plane take off onscreen, your ears will follow it down the runway along with your eyes, and as it roars directly overhead you might swear your hair is blowing back. If you're ready to explore this new dimension in home theater sound, you'll just need to add a pair of in-ceiling speakers to your five- or seven-channel system, or pick up a pair of Atmos enabled upward-firing speakers to project sound off your ceiling and create the height effects that make an Atmos system so riveting.

Here's a breakdown of all the Dolby Atmos speaker configurations this receiver supports:

  • 5.1.2 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers
  • 7.1.2 - seven conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and two overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)
  • 5.1.4 - five conventional surround speakers, one powered subwoofer, and four overhead or height speakers (requires an external stereo power amp)

You can use one or two subwoofers with any of these configurations.

With a firmware update, this receiver also supports DTS:X surround sound, a new format which uses object-based processing similar to Dolby Atmos and overhead speakers for immersive home theater.

Add more music with easy wireless listening options

The AVR-X4200W gives you plenty of ways to enjoy different tunes through your home speakers. You can quickly access all your old favorites from your own digital music library via your home network, while Bluetooth lets you stream anything you listen to on your phone or tablet. Anytime you feel like expanding your horizons, you'll be able to tune in to countless Internet radio stations from around the globe. And there's also support for Pandora®, Spotify® Connect and SiriusXM Internet radio for easy playback of your favorite music services.

Get music and video in multiple rooms

With all of the listening choices you get with the AVR-X4200W, it only makes sense to spread your music beyond the boundaries of your living room. You can play music from three different sources in up to three rooms. The receiver's powerful processing gives you stereo playback of digital or analog sources across three different zones. A Zone 2 HDMI output lets you watch video from two separate sources in your living room and a second room. A third HDMI output lets you send the same video content from your main zone to a TV in a different room or a projector in the same room.

Stress-free setup

Denon has made sure you won't spend hours buried in a manual trying to figure out how to set up the AVR-X4200W. With the Setup Assistant, connecting your equipment and optimizing system settings is a matter of following easy on-screen instructions that take you step-by-step through the entire process with clear illustrations. The Audyssey calibration system uses a microphone to analyze your room's acoustics, so your speakers' settings will be configured for the best possible sound in their environment.

Useful home automation features

Denon's IN-Command series of receivers offers heightened control capabilities and compatibility with custom integration options. The AVR-X4200W's rear-panel IR remote control input makes it compatible with external remotes and control systems. It can also be set up and controlled by a networked computer, and is certified for use with Crestron and Control4 home automation equipment.

Discrete Amplification: The Denon AVR-X4200W AV receiver features a powerful Class AB power amplifier section equipped with discrete high current power transistors. This discrete amplifier design delivers optimum realism and stunning dynamic range. By using high current, high power discrete power devices, the amplifier is able to easily drive high quality speakers. The AV receiver's 7-channel Class AB amplifier is rated at 125-watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20kHz, with 0.05% THD, driving 2 channels).

Amplifier Assignment: The AVR-X4200W's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • 9.1Ch: Assigns all seven internal amplifiers to the receiver's main zone and also requires a 2ch external amplifier for 9.1ch playback. The Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Front Height, and Front Wide L/R speakers are powered by the internal amps. The receiver will automatically switch between the Front Height and Front Wide speakers (Dolby Atmos/DTS:X)based on soundfield setting. The Surround Back L/R speakers will need to be powered by an external 2ch amplifier. Zone 2 and Zone 3 also require separate amps.
    • 7.1Ch: Assigns all power amplifiers within the receiver for the Main Zone. In this configuration, up to 11 speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Height L/R, Front Wide L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The receiver will automatically switch between the Surround Back (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD), Front Height (Dolby Atmos/DTS:X), and Front Wide speakers based on the type of 7.1ch content. You must use separate amplifiers for Zone 2 and Zone 3 speakers.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 2: The AVR-X4200W's amplifier channels can be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 3 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 3: The receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 3 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the third zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 2 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 5.1Ch + Zone 2/3-Mono: The AVR-X4200W's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, and Zone 2/3 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and mono playback in the 2nd and 3rd zone. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available.
    • 5.1Ch Bi-Amp: Assigns all amplifiers of the receiver to the Main Zone with the front speakers bi-amped. Up to five speakers (Front L/R, Center, & Surround L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Surround Back amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. Zone 2  and Zone 3 speakers must be powered by a separate amp.
    • 7.1Ch/2Ch Front: Assigns all amplifiers within the receiver to the Main Zone for 7.1ch playback (w/ Surround Back speakers). You can also connect a second pair of front speakers that are different from the ones being used during multi-channel playback for playback of 2ch audio. The receiver will automatically switch the internal power amplifier between your multi-channel front speakers and your stereo front speakers when listening to surround sound or 2ch stereo. Front Height/Wide speakers are not available. A separate amp must be used for Zone 2 and Zone 3.
    • 5.1Ch + Front B: Assigns five amplifier channels of the receiver to the Main Zone for up to 5.1ch playback and two amplifier channels to power another pair of speakers, often called "Speaker B".  Surround Back, Front Height, and Front Wide speakers are not available. A separate amplifier must be used to power Zone 2 and Zone 3.
Note: The receiver's Front Height and Front Wide speakers can be configured as Top Front, Top Middle, Top Rear, Front Dolby, or Surround Dolby for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, DTS:X Neural:X, and AURO-3D.

Quad-Core 32-Bit DSP: Featuring an advanced quad-core 32-bit, 4th Gen SHARC DSP processor, the AVR-X4200W easily handles a wide variety of Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro logic audio formats.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Immersive Surround Sound: The Denon AVR-X4200W AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats - like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Surround, DTS:X, Neural:X, and AURO-3D.

    • Dolby Atmos: With Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill your home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail, and depth. The AVR-X4200W has the processing power to run a more enveloping 7ch or 9ch Dolby Atmos layout using 5.1.2, 5.1.4*, or 7.1.2* configurations utilizing ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by two or four overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. A 7.1.2 is based on a 7.1 speaker layout with either two overhead or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers. *The 5.1.4 and 7.1.2 configuration will require an external amplifier.
    • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch or multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
    • DTS:X: DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space. DTS:X firmware update now available; click here.
    • DTS Neural:X: Further, DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format. DTS Neural:X firmware update now available; click here.
    • AURO-3D Upgrade ($199): Auro-3D is the next generation three-dimensional audio standard. It provides a realistic sound experience unlike anything before. By fully immersing the listener in a cocoon of life-like sound, Auro-3D creates the sensation of actually "being there". Thanks to a unique "Height" channel configuration, recorded acoustic reflections are reproduced by these speakers and are heard naturally due to the fact that sounds originate from around as well as above the listener. Once upgraded with the AURO-Codec Decoder ($199.00 cost), the AVR-X4200W is capable of decoding the original Auro-3D mix and playing back an Auro 9.1 channel configuration.

Proprietary Denon Technologies: The AVR-X4200W receiver utilizes proprietary Denon technologies to deliver exceptional audio performance.

    • AL24 Processing Plus: Denon's exclusive AL24 Processing Plus provides ultra high resolution digital audio filtering and precision tailoring of the main (L/R) audio channels, to deliver shimmering detail in the highs, along with smooth natural midrange and a broad soundstage with improved imaging.
    • Denon Link HD: When connected to a compatible Denon Blu-ray player, the AVR-X4200W's exclusive Denon Link HD system provides a dedicated pathway for the critical timing data to eliminate distortion caused by jitter errors in the main data stream.

Audyssey Platinum: AVR-X4200W features the Audyssey Platinum suite of powerful DSP features; including MultEQ XT32, Sub EQ HT, Low Frequency Containment, Dynamic Volume, Dynamic EQ, & Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX).

    • MultEQ XT32: With the supplied measurement microphone, MultEQ XT32 analyzes each speaker's output (including the subwoofers) at up to 8 measurement locations and generates precision digital filters that optimize each channel for the correct frequency and time domain response. The AVR-X4200W is also Audyssey Pro Installer ready.
    • Audyssey Sub EQ HT: Audyssey Sub EQ HT provides individual DSP tailoring of each subwoofer in a dual subwoofer setup, for deeper bass with improved definition, compared to a single subwoofer configuration. Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion dramatically broadens the surround soundstage for the ultimate surround sound experience with the option of connecting front height and/or front wide speakers.
    • LFC (Low Frequency Containment): Audyssey Low Frequency Containment uses advanced psychoacoustic algorithms to deliver a full range tonal balance, including deep bass, but without disturbing close-by neighbors or family members in other rooms, and features a multi-step adjustment that lets you dial in the amount of containment to your preference.
    • Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume smoothes out annoying jumps in volume (such as TV commercials), letting you listen at lower levels and still enjoy clear dialog, music and sound effects.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ provides precision tonal tailoring for full-range clarity at any listening level.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Surround Expansion (DSX): Audyssey DSX adds front effect speakers to improve spatial sound reproduction. Starting with a 5.1 channel system, DSX adds front Wide and/or front Height channels for better sound staging (although both wide and height speakers can be added, only one pair is used at a time). DSX also applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and surround channels.

Denon Original Listening Modes: Denon's Original Listening Modes, combined with Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Pro Logic processing, produce more realistic, powerful sound effects for your movie and music sound tracks based on the type of content and your home theater setup. You can choose from the following:

    • Rock Arena: For rock and popular music sources, this mode surrounds you with reflected sound of the kind you would hear at a live concert.
    • Jazz Club: This mode recreates the atmosphere of a live house where the ceiling is low and you are enveloped with rich doses of reflected sound.
    • Matrix: With this mode, you can add rich reflected sound to 2-channel stereo music sources where reflected sound is normally not audible.
    • Video Game: This mode is suited for achieving surround sound with video games..
    • Mono Movie: This mode is used when you listen to recorded monaural sound sources such as AM radio broadcasts or news programs from the center speaker.
    • Virtual: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or set of headphones.
    • Multichannel Stereo: Left and right stereo channels are distributed to all the speakers so that stereo sound can be heard from all directions at any listening position.

Direct Listening Modes: The Denon AVR-X4200W offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 5 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Center Spread: In the Dolby Surround mode, Center Spread expands the center channel signal to left and right front speakers to create a wider frontal audio image for the listener. It is optimized and designed primary for playback of stereo music content.
    • Denon Original Surround Mode Settings: While listening in one of the Denon Original Surround Modes, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Room Size (sets the size of your desired acoustic environment; Small/Medium/Large), Effect Level (adjusts the effect signal level from 1-15), and Delay Time (adjusts the delay time from 0-400ms to control the sound stage size).
    • Audyssey DSX Settings: While listening in the Audyssey DSX audio format, there are two further enhancements you can adjust; Stage Height (adjust sound stage height +/-10 when using front height speakers) and Stage Width (adjust sound stage width when using front wide speakers)

Audio Enhancements: The Denon AVR-X4200W receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • CINEMA EQ (Cinema Equalizer): The Cinema EQ function gently decreases the level of the extreme high frequencies, compensating for overly-bright sounding motion picture soundtracks. Select this function if the sound from the front speakers is too bright. This function only works in the Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic modes.
    • Restorer: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The Restorer function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Level Adjustments: The AVR-X4200W provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The AVR-X4200W offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0, -10, or -20 dB to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Power On Level: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Denon AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital & Analog Inputs (including Phono): The AVR-X4200W features two optical digital (Toslink) inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital inputs; the digital inputs are assignable. There are also seven (six rear/1 front) stereo analog (RCA) inputs, including a Phono MM input.
    • Color-Coded Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single/dual). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm. The AV receiver comes with color-coded labels to easily identify which channel a speaker cable should be connected to. Since the speaker cables have labels in the same colors as the connectors on the AVR-X4200W's rear panel, there's no longer any confusion about which terminals they should be connected to.
    • 13.2Ch Pre-Outs: The AV receiver features 13.2ch preouts (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, Front Height 1 L/R, Front Height 2 L/R, Front Wide L/R, and Dual Subs) for connection to external power amplifiers. The pre-outs are variable. For compatibility with dual subwoofer home theater systems, the AVR-X4200W features two non-discrete subwoofer outputs. With dual subwoofers, which can be placed in different parts of the room, you'll benefit from response averaging, which helps provide smoother and more detailed deep bass, compared to a conventional single subwoofer speaker system. The same signal is output from each sub output.
    • Headphone Jack: When headphones are plugged into the full-size 1/4" jack on the front panel, all the speakers are automatically muted.
    Video Features

HDMI 2.0a: The Denon AVR-X4200W is equipped with eight HDMI 2.0a inputs (7 rear/1 front) and three HDMI 2.0a outputs, enabling connection to various HDMI compatible devices such as Blu-ray Disc players, satellite/cable boxes, game consoles, and HD video camcorders. The two parallel HDMI outputs distribute the same video signal simultaneously to two separate displays, while the discrete HDMI output allows you to play a different audio/video source in another zone. The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K video signals to a TV.

    • 4K/60Hz + HDCP 2.2: The AVR-X4200W features support for 4K Ultra-HD full frame rate 60 Hz pass-through on all of its HDMI inputs and HDMI outputs, along with 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling pass-through, and 21:9 video aspect ratio. All HDMI inputs and monitor outputs are also equipped with HDCP 2.2 signal handling, a requirement for 4K Ultra-HD copy-protected content.
    • 3D Ready: Every HDMI input and output of the AVR-X4200W is able to pass through 3D video signals from your Blu-ray player or satellite/cable box to your 3D ready TV via HDMI.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The receiver also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature of the receiver's main HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-200ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 200ms to synchronize it with the video image.

4K Video Upconversion: The Denon AV receiver's sophisticated video processor  provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-X4200W and then connect to your TV with just a single HDMI cable. Only the receiver's main HDMI output supports video upconversion.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): In addition to handling 4K Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 resolution, the AVR-X4200W also features HDR (High Dynamic Range) and Wide Color Gamut compatibility via its HDMI 2.0a jacks for full support of Ultra-HD Blu-ray. HDR provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Component & Composite Video: The receiver features four composite video inputs (3 rear/1 front) and two component video inputs. There is also one composite video monitor output and one component video output. The monitor outputs can also be assigned to Zone 2.

Advanced ISFccc Video Calibration: The AVR-X4200W is certified by the Imaging Science Foundation to deliver top video quality, and the unit also features advanced ISFccc video calibration controls that allow for precision fine-tuning of the connected HDTV, even if it's not an ISF certified set. You can choose from a variety of Picture Modes - Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, ISF Day, ISF Night, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness).

Video Select Function: This receiver can display video from a different source on your connected TV during audio playback from Tuner, USB, Network Music, or Bluetooth.

    Multiroom Playback

HDMI Zone 2: The AVR-X4200W incorporates multi-zone HDMI audio/video distribution for Zone 2 with the inclusion of its HDMI matrix switching functionality. The receiver can send two different HDMI video feeds to two displays at the same time directly from the receiver (HDMI Zone 2 does not support upscaling). HDMI Zone 2 also supports 2ch PCM audio from the HDMI input source selected. The HDMI Zone 2 function is only compatible with the HDMI 1-7 input connectors. It is not compatible with the HDMI 8 input connector. The volume of HDMI Zone 2 will be controlled by your TV or additional receiver in Zone 2.

    • Compatible Sources: Compatible HDMI Zone 2 sources include the receiver's HDMI 1-7 inputs.
    • Incompatible Sources: The receiver's HDMI 8 input cannot be output to Zone 2. Analog audio/video signals cannot be sent to HDMI Zone 2. USB, Bluetooth, iPod/iPhone, AirPlay, Internet Radio, and DLNA sources cannot be output to HDMI Zone 2.

Audio/Video Zone 2: Zone 2 allows stereo audio/video playback of another A/V source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via stereo pre-out or speaker terminal output connections, as well as composite or component video. To enjoy a video source in Zone 2, you must connect the same video connection to your second display monitor as connected to your receiver for that particular source (there is no video-conversion for Zone 2). Zone 2 features either a pre-outs or speaker outputs, so you can use this receiver or a separate amp to power speakers in another room. When using the AVR-X4200W to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.1-channel. When using the receiver's pre-outs for the second room you need an additional amplifier in that room to power those speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Denon receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Sources: Compatible Zone 2 sources include Analog audio/video inputs, HDMI audio (2ch PCM), Optical/Coaxial digital inputs (2ch PCM), AM/FM Tuner (cannot select different stations for each zone), USB (including iPod/iPhone), AirPlay, Bluetooth, Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time), DLNA/Media Server contents.
    • Incompatible Sources: DSD audio cannot be sent to Zone 2. Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 2 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 2 (this scenario also includes Bluetooth).

Audio Only Zone 3: Zone 3 allows you to play a different stereo audio source connected to the receiver in a third room of your house. Zone 3 features either a pre-outs or speaker outputs so you can use this amp or a separate amp to power speakers in another room. When using the AVR-X4200W  to power speakers in a second and third room of your home, the second and third zones are restricted to mono operation and the main zone is limited to 5.1 channels. When using the receiver's pre-outs for the 3rd Zone, you need an additional amplifier in that room to power those speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.1-channel. The volume of Zone 3 can be controlled by the Denon receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.

    • Compatible Sources: Analog audio inputs, Optical/Coaxial digital inputs (2ch PCM), AM/FM Tuner (cannot select different stations for each zone), USB (including iPod/iPhone), AirPlay, Bluetooth, Internet Radio (different network sources cannot be played back in multiple zones at the same time), DLNA/Media Server contents.
    • Incompatible Sources: Analog video, HDMI audio/video, and DSD audio cannot be sent to Zone 3. Unfortunately, you cannot select USB and Network sources exclusively for each Zone. For example, if you select a network source for Zone 3 when a USB source is selected for the Main Zone, the input source in the Main Zone also switches to the same network source as Zone 3 (this scenario also includes Bluetooth).

All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 & Zone 3, simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types - analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

HEOS Multiroom Compatible: Thanks to the AV receiver's network and IP control capability, it can be integrated into Denon's HEOS whole home audio system via the HEOS Link (sold separately) and the HEOS app for Apple iOS (5.0+) & Android OS (2.3+). The HEOS Link connects to the AV receiver's Zone 2 preouts and a set of stereo RCA inputs or optical digital input on the receiver. Now, you can send the receiver's Zone 2 audio to other HEOS speakers in different rooms of your home, as well as play back audio from other HEOS devices through the AV receiver. From the app on your mobile device, you'll be able to control the Denon receiver along with other Denon HEOS gear and listen to music throughout your home. The HEOS wireless multi-room sound system by Denon can support up to 32 HEOS products (sold separately) on a single wireless network.
    • Music: You can select which source you want to listen to from the app. Choose from the receiver's Zone 2 audio, the Link's built-in online music services (like TuneIn, Pandora, Spotify Connect, iHeart Radio, SiriusXM, Rhapsody, or TIDAL, ), the music library on your mobile device), and more.
    • Rooms: From the app on your Apple iOS or Android device, you can select which rooms you want playing. You can play the same music in multiple rooms by grouping rooms together, or you can listen to a different source in each room.
    • Groups: You can join or group up to eight individual HEOS devices into a group that function as if they were a single speaker. The HEOS App is also flexible enough where you can create up to 16 Groups (2 HEOS products per Group).
    • Party Mode: You can easily group eight rooms together into Party Mode by using a "pinch" gesture.
Note: The Denon AV receiver only allows one IP connection for control. If the receiver is already being controlled by a 3rd party control system via IP, then the HEOS Link will not be able to control it.
    Convenience Features

OSD w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): With Denon's on-screen menu and setup assistant you can connect, configure, and use your home theater system with ease. The OSD and setup assistant features clear on-screen graphics and text that optimizes critical system settings for your particular home theater setup. The on-screen menu and setup assistant can be output to your TV via HDMI only. If you connect the receiver to your television via composite or component video, you will need to use the AV receiver's front-panel display for menu and source adjustments.

Note: Initial setup requires that the receiver be connected to your TV via HDMI for display of the on-screen menu. Many of the receiver's setup functions can only be found via the on-screen menu and not the front-panel display.

Quick Select: On the AVR-X4200W's front-panel, you'll find four Quick Select buttons that let you quickly choose from the most popular input sources; the ergonomically designed remote also includes Quick Select function buttons. With Quick Select, the AVR-X4200W remembers not only your preferred inputs but also your preferred audio settings, so you can enjoy precisely tailored sound with each one.

Gapless Playback & Text Search: Many live and classical albums have no gaps in the music. Gapless playback ensures that there are no pauses between audio files. This provides playback with no interruptions, the way it was meant to be heard. Compatible with WAV and FLAC music files via USB or DLNA. You can also search Internet Radio, USB, and DLNA content using keyword searches from the AV receiver's on-screen menu and remote control.

Input Name & Delete: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can delete it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Slide Shows/Picture View: You can play back still image (JPEG) files stored on a USB memory device or media server and pictures on Flickr website as a slide show. The display time can also be set. You can also play back music and a favorite picture at the same time via USB, Internet Radio, or Media Server.

Are the height channels amped? Do I have to have an external amp for my heights if i do 5.2.2? I want to run true 7.2.2 without an extra amp.

The 4200W can only power 7 channels. You have to have an additional amp to power the extra 2 channels. I used a 20 year old A/V receiver I had laying around.

The Denon AVR-X4200W has discrete circuit technology (not integrated circuitry), so the power amplifier provides identical quality for all 7 channels (165 Watts x 7-channels). If you were to add 2 height speakers (either front or rear) to a 5.2 channel system (making it 5.2.2), then all channels would be driven by a discrete power amplifier. I have found that this particular surround receiver has quite a few options for different channel set-ups. When you run your Setup (with or without Audyssey) the receiver asks specifically how many Height speakers you are using, or if you are using Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers or In-Ceiling speakers or Surround Back speakers.

7.2.2 requires 9 amplifiers & 2 self powered subs, so AVR-X4200 would also need a stereo amplifier for the 8th & 9th height speakers.

No extra amp required for a 5.2.2 setup. That the configuration I currently run and enjoy. To run 7.2.2 you'll need and external 2 channel amp.

Can you play music from any external source like DLNA, usb, etc with the screen on but no on screen display? i.e. stream music from your PC while watching TV or gaming without having an annoying OSD show on the screen after every song?

Michael R., I just tried to listen to streaming music from my phone and watch a tv show. Unfortunately I could not. However I have my Onkyo TX-RZ800 set up primarily for my surround sound system (Bose 5.1 currently). It may be possible if I used a zone 2 output to tv, I must say however, that this Onk that replaced a Yamaha 5.1 receiver absolutely blows away what the Yamaha was capable of in terms of EVERYTHING!!! Set up of this Onk was ridiculously easy, and I downloaded the app on my phone so customizing is even easier. I couldn't be more pleased with this Onkyo receiver and as always Crutchfield is awesome. Ordered on a Thursday night and it arrived at my door on Friday, but I'm only a couple hours from Charlottesville VA.I used to shop Best Buy for deals, but I'll never buy from anyone but Crutchfield from now on!!

Does the USB port change music file songs quickly? I tried a Pioneer Sc-95 and it took between 3-14 seconds to load a new song when fast forward was used from my flash drive. I have an old Onkyo that does it very quickly but the video does not work anymore.

Ello, I'm sorry, but I have not tried to fast forward through songs on the USB drive. I'm more used to playing music through my phone or computer, and I use playlists rather extensively

how do you connect a amp to the Denon x4200w to achieve 7.1.4?

If you wanted to have a 7.1.4 system with either 4 Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers or 4 Height speakers, the manual states that an external power amplifier is necessary. The first set of speakers is connected with speaker cable into the "Height 1" terminal outputs. The second set uses the Pre Out marked "Height 2" with an RCA cable to your external amplifier. It should be noted that this Denon receiver has specific combination patterns established (using its "Amp Assign" function) when you want to add Height speakers, Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers, In-Ceiling speakers, and/or Surround Back speakers. For instance, in a scenario using a 7.1.4 system with 4 Dolby Atmos speakers, the "Height 1" speaker terminal can only be used for Front Dolby Atmos speakers and the "Height 2" Pre Out terminal can only be used for Surround Atmos speakers (not Surround Back). I know that some speaker manufacturers suggest that when adding a second set of Dolby Atmos speakers (the Front Dolby being the first set), they should be on or near your Surround Back speakers instead of the Surround speakers. The only time this Denon receiver allows you to put Atmos speakers on or near your Surround Back speakers (called "Back Dolby") is if you have only 2 Atmos speakers added to a 7.1 system (or 7.1.2 Atmos). I think you need to upgrade to the AVR-X6200W to choose between either "Front Dolby & Surround Dolby" and "Front Dolby & Back Dolby" when setting up 7.1.4 Atmos in the Amp Assign menu.

To the best of my knowledge, the best you can do is 5.1.4, and that requires hooking up a stereo amplifier (see -X4200W manual starting at page 56). By 5.1.4 I mean a total of 5 main, center and surround channels, 1 sub and 4 Atmos height channels. That will use the 7 amplifiers in the receiver, a receiver subwoofer preamp output and a pair of receiver preamp outputs to a separate stereo amplifier that powers a pair of speakers for 2 of the 4 Atmos channels.

there are a couple of preamp outs that you assign. they connect to the preout inputs of an amp. I had a complication however with irritating noise picked up by the external amp. I ended up getting a power filter and have the external amp set to automatically turn off if no signal is present. Because I bought an amp and power conditioner did not save much $ over buying a receiver with the internal amps. If I had it to do over again would have gone that route.

No, I run 5.1 in the main listening area (Zone 1) that is also connected to the main TV. I connected a stereo amplifier (Onkyo TX-8050) to the Zone 2 ( second TV) to provide 2.1 amplification to a set of outdoor speakers and subwoofer.

It states this receiver is 5.1.4 ready for Atmos. My question is since it has all the preamp outputs for height channels can I use my own amp and configure this receiver to run 7.1.4 Atmos?

Yes, the receiver can process either a 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos system with the use of an external amplifier and you can select either option using the amp assign mode.

I am currently running it with my old Sony ES3500 in a 7.2.2 configuration, you can use Amp assign mode in 9.1 configuration and adjust which pre-outs you want to use.

Will this upscale analog video (component, composite) to 1080P/4K?
    michael  Oct 21, 2015

    A
The Denon AV receiver's sophisticated video processor provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the AVR-X4200W and then connect to your TV with just a single HDMI cable.
